Résumé :
The main goal of the research was to evaluate suitability of 11 tetrameric STRs (Short Tandem Repeats) marker panel for the Prestice Black-Pied pig (PC) breed as the only genetic resource in the Czech Republic. The analysis was carried out in 522 breeding and slaughter PC individuals. We observed 94 alleles overall across whole 11 STR panel. The observed heterozygosityHOwas 0.677, the polymorphism information content (PIC) was in average 0.664 per locus. The probability of identity of two independent samples (PI) using all 11 STR loci was 4.037·10−11and the probability of identity related individuals (PISibs) was 8.315·10−5. The power of exclusion for loci combinations when both parents are known (P1), when only one of the parent is known (P2) and for two putative parents (P3) were 0.9996, 0.9899 and 0.9999. The efficiency of the 11 tetrameric STRs (Animaltype Pig kit) is higher in PC in comparison to commercial breeds and slaughter crossbred pigs. In genetic resource PC, the 11 STRs panel is usable for forensic purpose such parentity testing and traceability.

Résumé :
Abstract Objectives Background: Randomized controlled trials are considered the ‘gold standard’ to assess the efficacy and effectiveness of health care and dietary interventions, however, challenges with recruitment and retention of participants can be detrimental to the validity and generalizability of the study. Children and adolescents play a role in the decision to participate, although parents are the primary decision-makers. Exploring children and parent's knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards research can help to understand factors that influence participation and retention. Objective: To identify predictors of recruitment and retention in RCTs involving both parents and children to assist in the implementation of recruitment and retention strategies. Methods A systematic review of RCTs was conducted to explore the available evidence to compose a qualitative meta-summary. Studies were identified from 3 databases and restricted only to English language publications. Data reporting participant's predictors and barriers of recruitment and retention in RCTs involving children and adolescents aged 0 to 21 were identified. Year of publication ranged from 2006 to 2019. Studies not including children and studies not involving participant feedback were excluded. Results 53 records were identified; 32 were excluded due to exclusion of child and/or parent feedback, therefore 21 studies were included. Several themes were identified between parents and children that mentioned predictors: personal health benefit, altruism, trust in the research, contact with staff, benefit for parents themselves, benefit for the community, minimal risk to the child, monetary benefits, felt as the only option, influence by family and friends, recommendation from physician, and increase in knowledge. Barriers mentioned were: felt as the “guinea pig,” burden for child, decision too stressful, fear of randomization, no direct benefit, and time and financial constraints. The most common themes identified in several of the studies were personal health benefits, the risk to the child, altruism, time constraint, and no direct benefit. Conclusions Important predictors of recruitment and retention in RCTs are children's personal health benefits and risks, altruism, time constraint, and no direct benefit. Funding Sources NIH

Résumé :
ABSTRACT DNA shuffling facilitated the evolution of a human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) variant with enhanced replication in pig-tailed macaque peripheral blood mononuclear cells (pt mPBMC). This variant consists exclusively of HIV-1-derived sequences with the exception of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) nef. Sequences spanning the gag-protease-reverse transcriptase (gag-pro-RT) region from several HIV-1 isolates were shuffled and cloned into a parental HIV-1 backbone containing SIV nef. Neither this full-length parent nor any of the unshuffled HIV-1 isolates replicated appreciably or sustainably in pt mPBMC. Upon selection of the shuffled viral libraries by serial passaging in pt mPBMC, a species emerged which replicated at substantially higher levels (50 to 100 ng/ml p24) than any of the HIV-1 parents and most importantly, could be continuously passaged in pt mPBMC. The parental HIV-1 isolates, when selected similarly, became extinct. Analyses of full-length improved proviral clones indicate that multiple recombination events in the shuffled region and adaptive changes in the rest of the genome contributed synergistically to the improved phenotype. This improved variant may prove useful in establishing a pig-tailed macaque model of HIV-1 infection.

Résumé :
PISA test data from 2000 to today have shown Germany’s education system is one of the most inequitable within the OECD, with high correlations between student background and achievement outcomes. Scholars have identified the highly differentiated school structure, which tracks students as young as 10 years old, as a central cause. This scholarship has not evaluated why German tracking has proved difficult to reform over the last 20 years, despite evidence of negative outcomes. Using a case study of parents’ actions in Hamburg, this paper employs a discourse analysis of debates surrounding a tracking reform to argue that opportunity hoarding—that is, parents with more social capital maintaining certain advantages through ingrained systems that are theoretically open to all—may contribute to why Germany’s early tracking system persists despite evidence showing that it increases educational inequality. The findings presented have implications for an international discussion of tracking reform and opportunity hoarding.

Résumé :
The theory and use of best linear unbiased prediction in genetic evaluation are well developed. However, there has been little empirical checking of its efficacy in practice. The objective here was to use a large body of Canadian pig performance records to check on the predicted benefits of BLUP in genetic evaluation. Phenotype records were available on fat depth and on days to 100 kg on some 65 000 progeny born in 1994 and 1995 from parents evaluated before 1994. Rank correlations between parent and progeny in data were calculated within herd-year-season to avoid effects due to differences in these factors. Computer simulation studies were also run to check on the predicted results. The simulation results confirmed the expectations on the higher correlation of mid-parental EBV than of mid-parental phenotype with progeny genotype and a regression (of progeny phenotype on mid-parental EBV) of unity when all relevant pedigree and performance data were used. In the data analysis, the (rank) correlations with progeny phenotype were consistently higher (36 and 27%) for mid-parental BLUP genetic evaluation than for mid-parental phenotypes, confirming the superiority of the BLUP evaluations over phenotypes. However, the regression of progeny phenotype on mid-parent BLUP EBV was usually less than the predicted value of unity. Simulation results suggest that either the base population heritability was lower than that used in the evaluation or that the information used was incomplete. Key words: Best linear unbiased prediction, EBV, pigs, performance, selection

Résumé :
Background: The improvement in pig zootechnical performances is a common practice in Benin. This improvement of the performances is made by the choice of the best reproducers in farms and the crossbreeding between the different breeds. Aim: This study aims to characterize practices related to consanguinity management in pigs reared in Ouémé and Plateau. Materials and Methods: Crossbreeding and consanguinity data were collected from 60 farms in these two departments. Frequencies and averages were calculated and compared between departments, genetic types, and origin of progenitors. Results: The majority of the investigated pig farmers in both departments were married men of primary or secondary education level. Most of them cross animals without a specific crossbreeding scheme. These crossings were performed to a greater extent (p<0.05) in Ouémé (94.28%) than in Plateau (52%). In general, farmers cross improved animals of high breeding values with the crossbred ones. These crossings were mainly performed to improve zootechnical performances. Renewing animals were commonly chosen from the farm or were provided from nearby farms. The majority of pig breeders in Ouémé (100%) and Plateau (86.67%) obtained reproductive animals from nearby farms. Males and females were sometimes bought from the same farm or from farms that pig breeders have sold reproductive animals in the previous years. In the case of selection within their own farm, male and female progenitors are separated at puberty by the majority of the breeders of Plateau (42.11%) and Ouémé (50%). Inbred mating was reported by breeders. More than half of breeders mate animals having a parental link in both departments. The mating was performed between animals of the same mother in 37.93% of farms in Ouémé and in 45.46% in Plateau. The main consanguinity consequences mentioned by the breeders were the high mortality at birth and weaning, piglets' weakness at the birth, the slow growth, and the decrease in litter size. Sows with at least one parent from external farm had a litter size at birth and weaning and a live-born piglets' number significantly higher than sows with both parents from the same farm. Conclusion: Rigorous monitoring of crossing and the filial links are necessary for pig farms for ensuring the improvement of zootechnical performances.

Résumé :
The Republic of Belarus has a well-developed pig breeding industry. The main goal in pig breeding in Belarus is to obtain, in a short time, competitive breeds, types and hybrids of pigs adapted to the conditions of industrial pork production and not inferior to analogues of the world breeding. Currently, in the pig industry, effective variants of interbreeding hybridization are widely introduced, and mating of specialized maternal breeds (BLW × BM) and (Y × L) with boars of specialized paternal breeds (D, P). Piglets obtained during interbreeding hybridization have a heterosis effect in feeding and meat traits 9-11 % higher compared with purebred parents. In connection with the need to increase the efficiency of domestic pig breeding, scientists at the Research and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Livestock Breeding have developed a new effective system for raising and breeding pigs, based on obtaining competitive parental forms of sows (F1) and paternal forms of boars for hybridization. It is shown that structural transformations in the pedigree and industrial pig breeding of the Republic of Belarus in 2020-2025 and for the period until 2030 will be aimed at further improvement and increase of performance and breeding traits of pigs based on the latest methods of genetics and selection, as well as at construction and commissioning of nuclei farms for maternal and paternal breeds with a total capacity of 3400 breeding sows, as well as 5-6 sow breeding farms with total capacity of 22100 sows. Commissioning of new high-tech capacities will allow to increase the production of high-quality pork within 5 years to 500 thousand tons, or 15.0-18.0 % higher compared to the current level.

Résumé :
AbstractIn order to reveal the molecular basis of heterosis, Large White (LW), an introduced European pig breed, and Meishan (MS), a Chinese indigenous pig breed, were selected to hybridize directly and reciprocally in the present experiment. mRNA differential display (DD) technique was performed to identify genes that were differentially expressed in the backfat tissues of hybrids (LW×MS, MS×LW) and purebred (LW×LW, MS×MS) pigs. The ten anchor primers in combination with ten arbitrary primers (100 sets in total) were used and nearly 1500 reproducible bands were observed in polyacrylamide gels. The 40 differentially displayed bands were selected for cloning and sequencing. Thirty-six out of 40 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) proved to be novel and the sequences were submitted to GenBank (accession No. CV507051-CV507087); the other four showed similarity to known genes published in GenBank. Three among 36 novel ESTs were chosen for further identification with semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The result showed that two ESTs were differentially expressed, and the third showed no obvious difference between hybrids and purebreds. In order to reduce the percentage of false-positive DD, RNA pools of four types of pigs were constructed, by mixing samples from six pigs of the same genotype, and subjected to DD. Stringent annealing temperature was applied and only bands that could be repeated in duplicate PCR were used for further study. The results showed that the expression pattern of these 36 ESTs differed among the four genotypes of pigs, suggesting that the genes corresponding to these differentially expressed ESTs might be related to the heterosis occurring in fat tissue.

Abstract: The diagnosis of cancer interferes in the well-being of the family due to frequent hospitalizations and painful procedures that the child undergoes and can unleash symptoms of stress and anxiety in parents. The investigation of psychosocial factors associated to the experience of childhood cancer has been rendered relevant in front of high cure and survival rates of the child and the use of instruments to evaluate the impact of the child's disease on the life of the parents. Considering the inexistence of instruments with this application in our culture, the present study had as objective the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP) for the Brazilian population, as well as evaluation of reliability, validity and usability. PIP is composed of 42 items distributed in four domains of communication, medical care, emotional function and role function. The items are evaluated as to the event frequency in the last week and the difficulty presented during these events. A 5-point Likert-type summative measurement scale was used, where 1 = none and 5 = very high. Larger scores indicate an elevated level of stress. For the procedures of translation and cross-cultural adaptation, the stages of translation, synthesis, backtranslation, evaluation by expert committee and pretest with 30 parents of children with cancer were followed. For evaluation of internal consistency, Cronbach's alfa coefficient was applied. For evaluation of convergent validity, correlation between the adapted instrument and the state portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) was made. Usability was verified considering the time needed for filling out the instrument, understanding of the instrument and the form of marking the answers. The final version was named "Pediatric Inventory for Parents - Brazilian version" (PIP-BV) and applied to a sample of 101 parents of children with cancer. The subscales and domains of PIP-BV obtained Cronbach's alfa coefficients equal or superior to 0.70. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient varied from +0.28 to +0.83, indicating positive correlation between PIP-BV and STAI-S. The mean time for filling out the instrument was 27.46 minutes and was considered simple and easy to be filled out. The procedure of cross-cultural adaptation was carried out with success and the psychometric properties of validity, reliability and usability of PIP-BV were satisfactory. Further psychometric evaluations in other populations are recommended.

Résumé :
The thesis presented here describes original research in the field of Natural Language Generation (NLG). NLG is the subfield of artificial intelligence that is concerned with the automatic production of documents from underlying data. This thesis in particular focuses on developing new and novel methods for generating text that takes into consideration the recipient’s level of stress as a factor to adapt the resultant textural output. This consideration of taking the recipient level of stress was particularly salient due to the domain that this research was conducted under; providing information for parents of pre-term infants during neonatal intensive care (NICU). A highly technical and stressful environment for parents where emotional sensitivity must be shown for the nature of information presented. We have investigated the emotional and informational needs of these parents through an extensive past literature review and two separate research studies with former and current NICU parents. The NLG system built for this research was called BabyTalk Family (BT-Family). A system that can produce a textual summary of medical events that has occurred for a baby in NICU in last twenty-four hours for parents. The novelty of this system is that is capable of estimating the level of stress of the recipient and by using several affective NLG strategies it is able to tailor it’s output for a stressed audience. Unlike traditional NLG systems where the output would remain unchanged regardless of emotional state of the recipient. The key innovation in this system was the integration of several affective strategies in the Document Planner for tailoring textual output for stress recipients. BT-Family’s output was evaluated with thirteen parents that previously had baby in neonatal care. We developed a methodology for an evaluation that involved a direct comparison between stressed and unstressed text for the same given medical scenario for variables such as preference, understandability, helpfulness, and emotional appropriateness. The results, obtained showed the parents overwhelming preferred the stressed text for all of the variables measured.

To enhance the maintenance practices, Oil and Gas Pipelines are inspected from the inside by automated systems called PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge). The inspection and mapping of defects, as dents and holes, in the internal wall of these pipelines are increasingly put into service toward an overall Structural Integrity Policy. The residual life of these structures must be determined such that minimize its probability of failure. For this reason, the investigation on the detection limits of some basic topological features constituted by peaks or valleys disposed along a smooth surface is of great value for determining the sensitivity of the measurements of defects from some combinations of circumferential, axial and radial extent. In this investigation, it was analyzed an inductive profilometric sensor to scan three races, radius r1, r2, r3, in a circular surface of low carbon steel, equipped with eight consecutive defects simulated by bulges and holes by orbit, equally spaced at p/4 rad. A test rig and a methodology for testing in laboratory were developed to evaluate the sensor response and identify their dead zones and jumps due to fluctuations as a function of topological features and scanning velocity, four speeds different. The results are presented, analyzed and suggestions are made toward a new conception of sensor topologies, more sensible to detect these type of damage morphologies

The modern technology of materials and structural integrity of pipelines requests the use of inspection tools named inspection pigs to detect, localize and measure the length, width and depth dimensions of the thickness losses of walls of buried and underwater pipelines in service. These tools run them internally, performing and recording measurements, with performance that varies according to the pig s technology. It has been developed recently an instrumented pig technology, called feller pig. This work aims to indicate factors that influence the feller pig technology performance in the detection and in the accuracy of measurement of the length, width and depth dimensions of the thickness losses on the internal surface of an oil pipeline wall under normal conditions of oil pipe inspection with pig. In this work, is made a collection of factors and an analyses of the technology based on the available literature, as well as an experiment to observe the technology and the factors operating. In the experiment, a feeler pig is used in a pipeline built in carbon steel and in operation that flows petroleum, in witch are observed areas with internal thickness losses occurred naturally. Some of these areas and their dimensions taken by automated ultra-sound scanner are compared with the ones indicated by the feller pig. Based on the data collection, on the analysis and on the experiment, the influence of factors object of this research is discussed. It is concluded that, among these, there are factors related to pipe fabrication tolerances, to wear of pig components, to internal adhesive wear of pipeline, to other pipeline damages and to technology characteristics. Finally, actions are suggested to know better, improve and define the applicability of this technology

The current study reports the development of an intelligent baby cradle that can detect the baby movement, bed-wet condition and body surface temperature. There is a need to develop such kind of devices, especially for Indian scenario. The developed device monitors the movement of the body using a pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor. Once the movement is detected, it activates the motor which swings the cradle for five minutes. In addition to the movement detection of the baby, the cradle is able to monitor the bed-wet condition and body surface temperature. In case of either bed wet condition, hyperthermia or both, a global system for mobile communications (GSM) communication portal is activated to send a status report to the parent's mobile. It is expected that the above device will help not only the parents at home but also the nurses in the hospital condition.

Résumé :
In this paper we describe, with illustrative vignettes, an observationally and psychoanalytically informed parent-toddler intervention for young children at risk of ASD. The intervention was offered to children between 18 and 24 months who fell in the High Risk category of the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT), which carries an 83% chance of a diagnosis at the age of 3 ½. In the absence of pathways for children under 2, this preliminary case series comprised 8 children from a heterogeneous clinical population. A significantly lower proportion of treated children were later diagnosed than the CHAT would predict (p = 0.03, Fisher’s Exact Test), suggesting that this intervention merits further investigation with larger numbers of children and additional instruments. Scores on two routine outcome monitoring measures (the Goal Based Measure and the PIR-GAS) improved both in children who were later diagnosed and in those who were not. We consider these findings in relation to recent non-psychoanalytic research papers (including an RCT on a parent-mediated intervention) that demonstrate the prime importance of parent-toddler interactions, and we suggest that supporting parental confidence is essential to improvement. We discuss emerging convergences between psychoanalytic and organicist approaches, and the possible place of this intervention in conjunction with others.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the narratives of upward mobility through beauty that are interwoven throughout diverse forms of Brazilian media—from journalistic accounts of recently discovered models to the carefully crafted storylines of soap operas and televised beauty pageants. It compares these accounts with ethnographic research among working-class parents who send their daughters to talent agencies or modeling schools. These girls' parents and teachers pin their hopes on performances of beauty because they understand the female body itself as a form of capital that promises a better future. This affective promise of a better future, however, becomes a moral injunction as well, sexualizing and racializing, in very particular ways, the poor women who are said to deserve upward mobility, emphasizing virtuous sexual behavior, European features, and straighter hair as essential components for success.

Résumé :
We have known for some time, from family studies done in Europe in the first half of the 1900s, that schizophrenia runs in families. These studies found the risks for the parents, brothers, and sisters of people with schizophrenia to be between 4% and 14%— on average about ten times as high as that for the general population. For children of those with schizophrenia, the risk was 12%, nearly 15 times the general population risk. When both parents had schizophrenia, the risk increased to about 40%. The risk to uncles and aunts, nephews and nieces, grandchildren, and half- brothers or -sisters was roughly three times the risk in the general population. This risk was much lower than the risk to the relatives in the immediate family circle. On the whole, these pioneering studies showed thatthe closer the blood relationship of a person to an individual with schizophrenia, the higher the risk for the disorder.Modern studies using morestrict research methods and reliable definitions of schizophrenia also found the disorder to run in families. However, they find risk estimates that are a bit lower than those found in earlier studies. For example, in a large family study from Iowa, Tsuang and his team reported the risk of schizophrenia to brothers and sisters of individuals with schizophreniato be about 3%. This level of risk was five times greater than the risk to relatives of persons without schizophrenia. Other modern studies found similar results. Diagnostic practises seem to play a strong role in these different estimates. The early European studies usually used a fairly broad definition of the illness while the modern studies used a strict criterion- based diagnosis developed for use in research. Indeed, modern researchers have noted that their family risk figures for schizophrenia are similar to the figures obtained by the earlier European studies when atypical cases are included in the definition of schizophrenia. In other words, the level of risk that we can pin on a family history of schizophrenia depends on how broadly we define the disorder and whether or not we include atypical cases and spectrum disorders.

Résumé :
The most striking feature of Alaska’s boreal soils, compared to those from most other biomes, is the lack of significant soil development even though much of interior Alaska has not been glaciated for millions of years. Soils in the boreal region support forest ecosystems that account for nearly half of the land area of Alaska. Worldwide, boreal forests store nearly a third of the terrestrial carbon (Apps et al. 1993). Hence, changes in boreal soils could greatly impact the global carbon balance (Chapter 19). Another striking feature of boreal soils is their great local variation due to slope and aspect. Compared to the well-developed, colorful soils of the temperate and tropical regions, boreal soils generally have ochric (yellowish brown) colors in uplands and dark-colors in lowlands due to organic matter accumulations. These lowlands account for 85% of the wetland inventory in the United States (Bridgham et al. 2001). Soil is a mixture of geological parent material and organic matter altered by weathering and the action of living organisms and conditioned by topography over time. Jenny (1941) defined the major factors that influence soil formation as parent material, organisms, topography, climate, and time. When only one of these factors varies, soil characteristics can be treated as a function of that factor (Chapter 1). Soils are also responsive to anthropogenic changes, such as agriculture and forestry, that alter interactive controls at the local scale (Moore and Ping 1989). Interior Alaska consists of several broad, nearly level lowlands with elevations mostly below 500 m and rounded mountains with elevations up to about 2000 m (Wahrhaftig 1965). The Interior Highlands Ecoregion (Chapter 2) includes the Kuskokwim Highlands and the Interior Highlands. The Interior Bottomlands Ecoregion includes the Koyukuk-Innoko Lowland, the Kanuti Flats, and the Tanana- Kuskokwim Lowlands (Rieger et al. 1979). The Copper River Basin south of the Alaska Range has a climate and vegetation similar to that of interior Alaska. The Copper River Basin has fine-textured subsoils of lacustrine origin. Soils from the Alaska Range, the Kuskokwim, and the Interior Highlands generally form in glacial deposits and residual materials and have abundant rock fragments.

Résumé :
This chapter examines alpine soils from a traditional soil science and ecological perspective, with a bias toward the latter. Soil physical and chemical properties are presented, but the soils as a resource for the biota as well as the feedbacks between abiotic and biotic processes are emphasized. Over half a century ago, Hans Jenny (1941) developed a conceptual model of the factors responsible for soil development. Jenny recognized that parent material, climate, topography, and geological and ecological disturbance factors could be viewed as independent phenomena that interact to produce soils. Jenny (1980) subsequently expanded this model to one that was also useful to describe entire ecosystems. To date, I've found no better framework with which to explain soils as true ecosystem characteristics—an entity generated by the interaction of biota with the abiotic environment. Accordingly, the roles that parent materials, topography, climate, biota, and disturbance frequencies have in controlling the structural and functional aspects of alpine soils are discussed. Because each of these five factors of soil formation has the potential to interact with various combinations of the other four factors, the number of possible combinations—and soil types—is surprisingly large, especially when one or more of the five factors exhibits tremendous within-site variability. Certainly the alpine must rank “most heterogeneous” among terrestrial ecosystem types in terms of topography, making this variable particularly important in any discussion of soil characteristics. As will be demonstrated, however, the other four factors also exhibit significant variation that contributes to the complexity of the alpine soil landscape. Soil characteristics emphasized here include those variables that affect and are affected by biotic processes over time scales ranging from a single growing season to decades to centuries. Hence, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil acidity (pH), soil water content, nutrient content and flux, and carbon storage and flux, are of primary concern. Detailed information about the soils of this region comes primarily from two sources, Scott Burns’s 1980 dissertation on soil distribution and development in the Niwot Ridge-Green Lakes region, and an extensive series of publications by M. I. Litaor. Burns provided classical soil descriptions based on the analysis of 97 extensive soil pit excavations.

Résumé :
The ability of various arrays of micro pin-fins to reduce maximum temperature of an integrated circuit with a 4 × 3 mm footprint and a 0.5 × 0.5 mm hot spot was investigated numerically. Micro pin-fins having circular, symmetric airfoil and symmetric convex lens cross sections were optimized to handle a background uniform heat flux of 500 W cm−2 and a hot spot uniform heat flux of 2000 W cm−2. A fully three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer analysis was performed and a multi-objective, constrained optimization was carried out to find a design for each pin-fin shape capable of cooling such high heat fluxes. The two simultaneous objectives were to minimize maximum temperature and minimize pumping power, while keeping the maximum temperature below 85 °C. The design variables were the inlet average velocity and shape, size and height of the pin-fins. A response surface was generated for each of the objectives and coupled with a genetic algorithm to arrive at a Pareto frontier of the best trade-off solutions. Stress–deformation analysis incorporating hydrodynamic and thermal loads was performed on the three Pareto optimized configurations. Von-Mises stress for each configuration was found to be significantly below the yield strength of silicon.

Résumé :
The multi-objective optimization of pin-fin heatsinks using a Kriging approximation model is presented based on systematic experimental results. Thermal resistance and pressure drop are the objective functions in this study. Pareto solutions to the objective functions are illustrated. We derived the design rules for the diameter, height, and pitches for the uniform staggered arrays of pin-fin heatsinks by correlating the objective functions with design variables. We also analyzed the contribution of all design variables to the thermal resistance as well as the pressure drop. We found that both the thermal resistance and the pressure drop are the most sensitive to the ratio of transverse pitch to pin-fin diameter.

Résumé :
Recently, we have proposed the simple cell mapping method (SCM) for global solutionsof multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). We have applied the SCM method to the multi-objective optimal time domain design of PID control gains for linear systems to simultaneously minimize the overshoot, peak time and integrated absolute tracking error of the closed-loop step response. The SCM method can efficiently obtain the Pareto set and Pareto front globally, which represent the optimal control gains and performance measures, respectively. The Pareto set and Pareto front contain a complete set of control designs with various compromises in the tracking performance, and give the system designer a much wider range of choices and flexibility. Furthermore, we have discovered a fine structure of the Pareto front of the MOP solution, which was notseen before in the literature. In this paper, we further examine the implication of the fine structure with regard to the vibration control design and expected performance of the controller, and compare our findings with the dominant method in MOP studies, i.e. the genetic algorithm.

Résumé :
Abstract Sliding mode controllers (SMCs) are well-known nonlinear control techniques. The design of a SMC involves the selection of a sliding mode surface and reaching law. The constant, exponential, and power rate reaching laws are the most widely used. Selecting a reaching law is often based on the desired reaching time; that is how fast the state trajectory approaches the switching manifold. However, the selection of a reaching law does not only affect the reaching time (tr) but also other design specifications such as the settling time (ts), overshoot (Mp), and tracking error (JIAE). Indeed, the design of a closed-loop system usually involves multiple and often conflicting objectives. Therefore, a multi-objective optimal design approach that takes into consideration all the design requirements should be adopted. Furthermore, a systematic study is needed to evaluate and compare the performance of a SMC controller under these reaching laws in multi-objective settings. To this end, the problems of designing a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) sliding mode controller applied to linear and nonlinear dynamic systems using the three reaching laws are formulated as multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). The objective space includes tr, Mp, ts, and JIAE and the parameter space consists of the design gains of the reaching laws and the sliding mode surface. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA – II) is used to solve the optimization problem. The solution of the MOP is a Pareto front of optimal design points. Therefore, comparing three Pareto fronts is not a straightforward task. As a result, sections of the Pareto fronts that satisfy some legitimate constraints on the objective space are extracted. Then, a comparison among these sections is conducted graphically. The results show that the exponential rate reaching law outperforms the other two laws in most of the objectives under investigation.
