La thèse analyse les écrits d’Helmuth Plessner avant son exil d’Allemagne (1933) pour éclairer sa contribution au débat sur la forme dans l’architecture allemande du début du XXe siècle. Elle commence par reconstituer le contexte intellectuel et historique dans lequel s’inscrit sa réflexion, notamment à travers l’analyse plessnérienne de l’impact de l’industrialisation sur le nouvel État allemand et sur l’époque de Weimar. Critiquant les positions radicales de nombreux contemporains, Plessner attribue une part centrale à l’incapacité de saisir l’«essence» de la technique comme facteur clé de la crise culturelle, politique et sociale de l’époque. Il préconise ainsi la recherche d’un nouvel équilibre avec les conditions matérielles de l’existence, par la création de nouvelles valeurs culturelles et formes esthétiques. Dans un article méconnu consacré à la philosophie de l’histoire de l’art, Plessner s’inscrit dans le débat sur le concept de style, critiquant les Kunstwissenschaften ainsi que le rejet de la forme prôné par la peinture expressionniste et abstraite. Il fonde sa critique sur une exploration de la multiplicité qualitative de la nature, qui permet, selon lui, de dépasser les dichotomies entre corps et esprit, entre nature et culture, tout en s’opposant à l’hégémonie technoscientifique sur les modes de connaissance. Dans ce cadre, l’architecture apparaît comme un domaine articulant l’exigence d’une réponse fonctionnelle aux usages techniques et une liberté esthétique et formelle. Le corps joue un rôle central, car le mouvement humain permet une perception dynamique de l’espace tridimensionnel, à la fois comme surface orientée vers l’observateur et comme espace enveloppant. La philosophie de l’architecture plessnérienne s’appuie également sur l’anthropologie philosophique qu’il élabora en 1928. La notion de forme vivante y est fondatrice : elle incarne une tension entre Gestalt (la stabilité d’une forme) et Gestaltung (le dépassement constant), traduisant chez l’humain une dialectique entre la clôture dans un environnement culturel et l’ouverture au monde en tant qu’irréductibilité du réel à ses multiples formes. L’architecture moderne, notamment celle de Mies van der Rohe, s’est révélée réceptive à ces influences issues des biologies philosophiques de l’époque. La quête d’une nouvelle forme, conciliant art et technique grâce aux moyens industriels, s’est nourrie des formes organiques récemment redéfinies. La conférence de Plessner sur la renaissance de la forme à l’époque de la technique industrielle, qui constitue le pivot de cette thèse, s’inscrit donc dans ce contexte en proposant la solution formelle de la « forme ouverte ». Cette notion résonne à la fois avec la conception plessnérienne de l’organisation des plantes – pensée conjointement avec Hans Driesch – et avec l’herméneutique historique inspirée par Wilhelm Dilthey
The thesis analyzes Helmuth Plessner's writings prior to his exile from Germany in 1933 to shed light on his contribution to the debate on form in early 20th-century German architecture. It begins by reconstructing the intellectual and historical context in which his reflections are situated, particularly through Plessner’s analysis of the impact of industrialization on the newly unified German state and the Weimar era. Criticizing the radical stances of many of his contemporaries, Plessner identifies the inability to grasp the “essence” of technology as a central factor in the cultural, political, and social crises of the time. He thus advocates for the pursuit of a new balance with the material conditions of existence through the creation of new cultural values and aesthetic forms. In a lesser-known article on the philosophy of art history, Plessner engages in the debate on the concept of style, critiquing the Kunstwissenschaften as well as the rejection of form championed by Expressionist and abstract painting. He grounds his critique in an exploration of the qualitative multiplicity of nature, which, in his view, enables a transcendence of the dichotomies between body and mind, nature and culture, while opposing the technoscientific monopoly over modes of knowledge. In this framework, architecture emerges as a field that harmonizes the need to address functional and technical demands with aesthetic and formal freedom. The human body plays a central role, as movement allows for a dynamic perception of three-dimensional space, both as a surface oriented toward the observer and as an enveloping environment. Plessner’s philosophy of architecture also draws upon the philosophical anthropology he developed in 1928. The concept of the living form is foundational here: it embodies a tension between Gestalt (the stability of a form) and Gestaltung (the ongoing act of transformation), reflecting, in humans, a dialectic between enclosure within a cultural environment and openness to the world as the irreducibility of reality to its various forms. Modern architecture, particularly that of Mies van der Rohe, proved highly receptive to these influences from the philosophical biology of the era. The quest for a new form that reconciles art and technology through industrial means drew inspiration from the newly conceived organic forms. Plessner's lecture on the rebirth of form in the age of industrial technology, which constitutes the central focus of this thesis, fits into this context by proposing the formal solution of the “open form”. This concept resonates both with Plessner’s and Hans Driesch’s understanding of plant organization and with the historical hermeneutics inspired by Wilhelm Dilthey

Cette recherche a pour objet l'articulation entre les dimensions anthropologiques et sociologiques de l'anthropologie philosophique de Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985). Elles procèdent selon trois axes. Je m'efforce (1) d'offrir une synthèse de l'anthropologie philosophique plessnerienne afin (2) de reconstituer les conditions de possibilité du social au stade humain de l'organique. Le troisième axe (3) correspond, enfin, à l'analyse des limites structurelles du social à partir de ses deux dimensions constitutives : l'individuel (limites ontogénétiques, comportementales et inter-personnelles) et le collectif (limites culturelles, intra- et inter-culturelles)
This research focuses on the relationship between anthropological and sociological dimensions of philosophical anthropology of Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985). It proceeds along three axes. This research try to (1) provide a synthesis of plessnerian philosophical anthropology (2) in order to reconstruct the social conditions of possibility of the human stage of the organic (“die menschliche Stufe des Organischen”). Finally, the third axis (3) is dedicated to the analysis of the structural limits ("Grenzen") of the social from two of its constituent dimensions: the individual limits (as ontogenetic, behavioral and interpersonal limitations) and the collective limits (as cultural, intra- and inter-cultural boundaries)
