The intine, the inner layer of the pollen wall, is essential for the normal development and germination of pollen. However, the composition and developmental regulation of the intine in rice (Oryza sativa) remain largely unknown. Here, we identify a microRNA, OsmiR528, which regulates the formation of the pollen intine and thus male fertility in rice. Themir528knockout mutant aborted pollen development at the late binucleate pollen stage, significantly decreasing the seed-setting rate. We further demonstrated that OsmiR528 affects pollen development by directly targeting the uclacyanin geneOsU

Cotton breeders have long recognised the importance of alien germplasm from the Malvaceae family, especially the cultivated species, as sources of genes for cotton improvement. An understanding of the biological nature of the incompatibility systems that prevent hybridisation and/or seed development is necessary for the successful hybridisation and introgression between cotton and cultivated Malvaceae species (Hibiscus cannabinus and Abelmoschus esculentus). The objectives of the present study were to determine the reasons for reproductive isolation between Malvaceae species. The current study

Pollen grains are either 3-porate, 6-7 porate or polypantoporate with oblate spheroidal shape and reticulate or semitectate reticulate exine. An allergy to honey is a rare symptom. It usually occurs when people are allergic to food components, pollen and bee venom. Most often an allergy to honey is manifested by disturbances of skin and digestive system. Anaphylaxis is seldom, pollen proteins are more often the cause of an allergy to honey than honeybee ones. In particular cases an allergy can be caused by moulds, yeasts and secretion of sapsucking insects. An allergy to honey is often caused by pollen of floral plants from Compositae family (e.g.: sunflower, mugwort, marguerite, dandelion, golden rod, ragweed). It is caused more ra

AbstractPollen tube tip growth requires intricate Ca2+ signaling. Recent studies have also identified rapid alkalization factor (RALF)-family peptides and their receptors as critical components for pollen tube tip growth and integrity. The functional relationship of RALF and calcium signaling modules remains largely unclear. Here we report that disruption of RALF signaling pathway abolished the cytosolic Ca2+ gradient in the pollen tube, indicating that Ca2+ signaling is downstream of the RALF signaling pathway. Pollen morphology of nine species representing four genera: Cephalaria Schrad, Dipsacus L., Pterocephalus Vaill. and Scabiosa L. of the family Dipsacaceae in Iran has been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that pollen grains were triporate and tricolpate. The pollen type of Scabiosa rotata Bieb. (tri- and tetraporate) is the first report in the world. The sizes of pollen grains fall into the classification group magna (pollen grain diameter 50–100 μm). Pollen shapes vary from preoblate to prolate and their polar views were triangulate and lobate. Identifying synapomorphic morphological characters is needed to select and then accurately place fossils as calibrations on a phylogeny in molecular-dating analyses. The plant family Myrtaceae, with 130 genera and 5500 species, has nine different pollen types, whereas the fossil pollen record of Myrtaceae, represented by the genus Myrtaceidites, putatively extends back to the Cretaceous and also contains at least nine distinct morphospecies. They also contain several proteins, lipids and vitamins which are essential for the growth and developments of developing bee larvae. Quantification of these chemical constituents is important for the dietary purposes of honey bees.
