Biodegradable polymers are an exceptional class of polymers that can be decomposed by bacteria. They have received significant interest from researchers in several fields. Besides this, biodegradable polymers can also be incorporated with fillers to fabricate biodegradable polymer composites. Recently, a variety of ionic liquids have also been applied in the fabrication of the polymer composites. In this brief review, two types of fillers that are utilized for the fabrication of biodegradable polymer composites, specifically organic fillers and inorganic fillers, are described. Three types of

The damping and basic dynamic properties of a novel type of multifunctional hybrid material known as Metal Foam-Polymer Composite are investigated. This material is obtained by injection molding a thermoplastic polymer through an open cell Aluminum Foam, in essence creating two contiguous morphologies; an Aluminum Foam interconnected “skeleton” with the open pores filled with a similarly interconnected polymer substructure. This coexistence of both materials allows each to contribute its salient properties (e.g. the plastics contributing surface toughness and the metal foams contributing therm

Résumé :
Given the reported extent of microplastics in the aquatic environment, environmentally relevant exposure information for sediments dredged by the US Army Corps of Engineers will lend context to the risks posed by this contaminant during dredging. We measured the occurrence, abundance, and polymer composition of microplastics in sediments collected from nine dredged waterways and two non-dredged reference areas. The number of particles in sediment samples ranged from 162 to 6110 particles/kg dry wt., with a mean of 1636 particles/kg dry wt. Fragments were the most prevalent shape observed among

Engineers and ecologists continue to explore new methods and adapt existing techniques to improve highway mitigation measures that increase motorist safety and conserve wildlife species. Crossing structures, overpasses and underpasses, combined with fences, are some of the most highly effective mitigation measures employed around the world to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) with large animals, increase motorist safety, and maintain habitat connectivity across transportation networks for many other types and sizes of wildlife. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic response of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite sandwich panels subjected to typical barge impact masses and velocities to develop force time histories that can be used in controlled experimental testing. Dynamic analyses were performed on FRP composite sandwich panels using the finite element method software Abaqus/Explicit. The “traction-separation” law in the Abaqus software is used to define the cohesive surface interaction properties to evaluate the damage between FRP composite laminate layers as well as the core separation within

Natural polymer blend films composed of chitosan and silk fibroin were prepared by solution casting technique with various ratios of chitosan to silk fibroin, using glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent. The effects of the ratio of chitosan to silk fibroin and crosslinking agent on mechanical properties, swelling behavior and drug releasing property of the blend films were studied. For the swelling behavior, the blend films exhibited a dramatic change in the degree of swelling when immersed in acidic solutions. The blend film with 80% chitosan content had the maximum degree of swelling. It appe

Cellulose nitrate (CN) is a semi-synthetic polymer rendering outstanding film properties such as good transparency, and water resistance, thus finds its major utilization in coating industry. Raw CN has water and isopropyl alcohol by-product at maximum content of approximately 3 and 30 wt%, respectively. The tolerance water level in the CN powder for a potential application as nail polish is investigated in order to produce good film-forming properties. The effect of adding layered silicate clay particles as thixotropic agent in the nail enamel is also examined. The water content was varied at
