Résumé :
International collaborations usually involve individuals from one country traveling to another country (Kuehn & Henne, 2003). However, for various reasons, students and faculty from the United States do not always have the option to travel to another country. This was the case when the Department of Communication Disorders Speech-Language Hearing Clinic at Texas State University was contacted by personnel from a clinic in Monterrey, México. Together, we developed an international collaboration that would be mutually beneficial to all parties involved. We developed goals for the clinical co

Use of tablet computers has become ubiquitous in speech-language pathology assessment and intervention. With hundreds of applications of variable quality available, clinical training programs have the added responsibility of teaching students systematic, critical-thought-driven approaches to technology selection and evaluation. The purpose of this article is two-pronged: (1) we describe a systematic approach to tablet/app implementation piloted within the Norma S. and Ray R. Understanding the community in which one practices is equally important to the clinical skills and applications of knowledge acquired by a graduate student in speech-language pathology in clinical settings. Shifting political and economic landscapes that are the backdrop for service delivery necessitate that university supervisors help students recognize the influence of local and state community issues. In this article, the authors explain how a service-learning model was used to create a regional outreach activity to benefit stakeholders of a university speech and hearing clinic and members

AbstractStudents who have graduated from a Doctor of Audiology program are qualified to practice as audiologists as determined by university standards, national examination, and state licensure; however, being qualified to practice audiology does not necessarily mean a person is ready to open a private practice. Students may have had a few business or clinic management courses and may have had the opportunity to rotate through private practices; however, these few experiences would not sufficiently prepare them for the realities of owning and operating a business. Purpose Low-performing middle schools are often urban, culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Classroom-based speech-language service delivery is a best practice in these schools. This article provides strategies that have enhanced service delivery in a diverse and low-income urban middle school located in the San Francisco Bay Area, through a partnership between the San Francisco State University, Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, Nicholas J. Cochlear implants are now the treatment of choice for patients with severe to profound hearing loss. Inclusion criteria for cochlear implantation have expanded, and a whole array of implantable hearing devices have been introduced over the years. To date, more than 250 cochlear implantations have now been performed in the Philippines (Figure 1). In 2006, the first auditory brainstem implantation, and first vibroplasty or middle ear implantation in the country were done at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). Résumé :
Now more than ever, speech clinicians are being required to justify the effectiveness of their work by showing results. There are different ways to measure outcomes. For example, outcomes may be measured by testing to determine if change has occurred regarding clinical goals, or by comparing the cost of the treatment to the benefit of the treatment to determine if the treatment was economically sound. Another type of measure is subjective outcomes, such as client satisfaction. Subjective outcomes are difficult to define and measure and few studies of this type have been reported in the literat
