Post-foundationalism departs from the assumption that there is no ground, necessity, or objective rationale for human political existence or action. The edited volume puts contemporary debates arising from the »spatial turn« in cultural and social sciences in a dialogue with post-foundational theories of space and place to devise post-foundationalism as radical approach to urban studies. This approach enables us to think about space not only as socially produced, but also as crucially marked by conflict, radical negativity, and absence. The contributors undertake a (re-)reading of key spatial and/or post-foundational theorists to introduce their respective understandings of politics and space, and offer examples of post-foundational empirical analyses of urban protests, spatial occupation, and everyday life.

Résumé :
Horror’s longstanding reputation as a popular but culturally denigrated genre has been challenged by a new wave of films mixing arthouse minimalism with established genre conventions. Variously dubbed “elevated horror” and “post-horror” in popular film criticism, texts such as The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch, It Comes at Night, Get Out, The Invitation, Hereditary, Midsommar, A Ghost Story, and mother! represent an emerging nexus of taste, politics, and style that has often earned outsized acclaim from high-minded critics and populist rejection by wider audiences. Post-Horror is the first full-length study of one of the most important and divisive movements in twenty-first-century horror cinema. It argues that the affect produced by these films’ minimalist aesthetic has fueled taste-based disagreements between professional film critics, genre fans, and more casual viewers about whether the horror genre can or should be upheld as more than a populist entertainment form, especially as the genre turned away from the post-9/11 debates about graphic violence that consumed the first decade of the twenty-first century. The book thus explores the aesthetic qualities, historical precursors, affective resonances, and thematic concerns of this emerging cycle by situating these texts within revived debates between over the genre’s larger artistic, cultural, and entertainment value. Chapters include thematic analyses of trauma, gaslighting, landscape, existential dread, and political identity across a range of films straddling the line between art-horror and multiplex fare since approximately 2013.

Résumé :
Post-Millennial Palestine: Literature, Memory, Resistance confronts how Palestinians have recently felt obliged to re-think memory and resistance in response to dynamic political and regional changes in the twenty-first century; prolonged spatial and temporal dispossession; and the continued deterioration of the peace process. Insofar as the articulation of memory in (post)colonial contexts can be viewed as an integral component of a continuing anti-colonial struggle for self-determination, in tracing the dynamics of conveying the memory of ongoing, chronic trauma, this collection negotiates the urgency for Palestinians to reclaim and retain their heritage in a continually unstable and fretful present. The collection offers a distinctive contribution to the field of existing scholarship on Palestine, charting new ways of thinking about the critical paradigms of memory and resistance as they are produced and represented in literary works published within the post-millennial period. Reflecting on the potential for the Palestinian narrative to recreate reality in ways that both document it and resist its brutality, the critical essays in this collection show how Palestinian writers in the twenty-first century critically and creatively consider the possible future(s) of their nation.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the enduring legacy of the Colliers on scholarship of labor in developing and post-communist countries, arguing that it has influenced both historically rooted configurational analyses and temporally rooted historical institutionalist analyses. Historical institutionalist research has advanced the study of contemporary labor politics by highlighting the processes through which institutional legacies persist and change within specific sociopolitical and temporal contexts and thereby have profound impacts on later events. We therefore have a better understanding of varying union responses to neoliberal reform, the conditions under which some unions confront these reforms more effectively than others, and the effects of authoritarian legacies on unions in new democracies. Going forward, historical institutionalist scholars must think more systematically about why some institutions are stickier than others and how institutions interact with contextual variables to produce distinct pathways of institutional evolution and transformation.

Résumé :
This chapter outlines a realm of discourse and political communication that might plausibly be identified as ‘a post reformation public sphere’. It does so through an account of several modes of political and religious controversy, dispute and polemic, involving the press, circulating manuscript, and various sorts of performance. It argues that in the conduct of such disputes contemporaries often turned to history, both English and foreign, relatively recent and classical, as a way to understand and interpret contemporary events. It contends that the history play was both a product of and a contribution not merely to the emergent style of public politics being described here, but also to an increasingly self conscious analysis of how that politics might best be practised.

Résumé :
In the aftermath of the Liberian civil war, groups of ex-combatants took control of natural resource enclaves. With some of them threatening a return to war, these groups were widely viewed as the most significant threats to Liberia’s hard-won peace. Building on fieldwork and socio-historical analysis, this study shows how extralegal groups emerge as a product of livelihood strategies and the political economy of war. It analyzes the trajectory of extralegal groups in three sectors of the Liberian economy: rubber, diamonds, and timber. The findings offer a counterpoint to the prevailing narrative, arguing that extralegal groups have a dual nature and should be viewed as accidental statebuilders driven to provide basic governance goods in order to create a stable commercial environment. These groups do not seek to rule; they provide governance because they need to trade—not as an end in itself. This leads to the book’s broader argument: it is trade, rather than war, that drives contemporary statebuilding. In areas where the state is weak and political authority is contested, where the rule of law is corrupt and government distrust runs deep, extralegal groups can provide order and dispute resolution, forming the basic kernel of the state. Extralegal groups also perform a series of hidden governance functions that establish public norms of compliance and cooperation with local populations. This sheds new light on how we understand violent nonstate actors, allowing us to view them as part of an evolutionary process of state-making, rather than simply as national security threats.

Résumé :
This chapter examines how New Orleanians in the post-Katrina era have drawn upon African American–rooted parade traditions, especially the practice of second lining, to respond to what some have called the biopolitical order in New Orleans, particularly those aspects of it related to state and criminal violence. Some parades have been organized by long-established social aid and pleasure clubs and other traditional African American networks; some are the product of emergent cultural and political formations. Such acts may be viewed as improvised responses to a biopolitical order that is itself both scripted and improvisational. Although the cultural politics of such acts are often contradictory, this essay contends that they often open up important political space for collaboration and reflection on key social justice issues that are defining New Orleans in the post-Katrina era.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Youth, Work and the Post-Fordist Self represents a paradigm shift in contemporary understandings of youth and work: from the study of youth transitions to the formation of young people as workers. With this focus, the book addresses transformations in the status of young people as economic actors. Despite high levels of youth unemployment, young people are increasingly encouraged to view work as a realm of meaning and self-actualisation, and are required to invest more and more in their identities as workers. In this, young people are evocative of broader shifts in labour force formation processes, which now go beyond the possession of skills or educational capital to encompass aspects of the working self that were previously considered ‘unproductive’, such as a worker’s relational style and mode of self-expression. The book draws on a large qualitative data-set in which young people articulate the meaning of work in their own words, describe their experiences of employment, and articulate their plans and aspirations for the role that work will play in their own lives. More than a set of employment conditions to move through, this book explores work as a realm in which young people’s selves and identities are produced in line with post-Fordist social and economic changes, which make work into an increasingly all-encompassing arena for the production of youth itself. In this sense, the book represents a new research agenda in studies of youth and work, situating youth as critical to the dynamics of labour and value in contemporary capitalism.

Résumé :
This is a comprehensive study of the far-reaching changes that led to a reshaping of the philosophical discourse in Islam during the sixth/twelfth century. Whereas earlier Western scholars thought that Islam’s engagement with the tradition of Greek philosophy ended during that century, more recent analyses suggest its integration into the genre of rationalist Muslim theology (kalam). This book proposes a third view about the fate of philosophy in Islam. It argues that in addition to this integration, Muslim theologians picked up the discourse of philosophy in Islam (falsafa) and began to produce books on philosophy. Written by the same authors, books in these two genres, kalam and philosophy (hikma), argue for opposing teachings on the nature of God, the world’s creation, and the afterlife. This study explains the emergence of a new genre of philosophical books called hikma that stand opposed to Islamic theology and at the same time wish to complement it. Offering a detailed history of philosophy in Iraq, Iran, and Central Asia during the sixth/twelfth century together with an analysis of the circumstances of practicing philosophy during this time, this study can show how reports of falsafa, written by major Muslim theologians such as al-Ghazali (d. 505/1111), developed step-by-step into critical assessments of philosophy that try to improve philosophical teachings and eventually become fully fledged philosophical summas in the work of Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 606/1210). The book ends in a discussion of the different methods of kalam and hikma and the coherence and ambiguity of a Muslim post-classical philosopher’s œuvre.

Résumé :
In The Midnight Verdict (1993), Seamus Heaney combines extracts from two texts taking the poet into the underworld: Ovid’s description in Metamorphoses of Orpheus’ pursuit of Eurydice and subsequent death, and Brian Merriman’s Cúirt an Mheán-Oídhche (The Midnight Court). As a poet of conflict, Heaney was forced to produce his art amid hostile crossfire. Heaney’s fellow Northern Irish poet Derek Mahon draws heavily on ironized self-sacrifice as a response to conflict in his ‘Rage for Order’ (1979). When Thomas Kinsella attempts to tackle the Northern Irish Troubles by apportioning blame to guilty parties, in Butcher’s Dozen (1972), his response to Bloody Sunday, the results are uneven. In a series of readings centred on themes of gender and the self-representation of the poet, this chapter identifies what redress Heaney, Mahon, and Kinsella find for the ‘the atrocities against his sacred poet’ of which Bacchus complains in The Midnight Verdict.

Résumé :
This chapter begins with a discussion of digital feminisms in relation to the most recent pop-feminist guides published in North America, which reflect upon the union between pop-culture and feminism and question whether feminism really has succeeded in permeating pop-culture, and, if so, at what cost. The author then discusses a corpus of autofictions written by queer and feminist writers engaging with the same issues of self-hood and agency in neoliberal postfeminism examined by pop-feminists. She returns to the question raised in Chapter 2 about the relationship between the economics of production and the critical cultural product, between the transgressive riot-grrrl gesture and its appropriation by commercial forces, between the desire to reach new audiences and the normatizing forces of the mainstream, and between the normalization of queer and feminist protest culture and the hedonistic embrace of transgressive behaviours, products, and practices in heteronormative North American pop-culture.

Résumé :
This chapter examines how experimental music in the 1960s in Cuba reached wider audiences as a product of the cultural policies of the Cuban Revolution and of the aesthetic goals of a particular set of individuals who took advantage of the new cultural institutions to promote experimental music under the banner of vanguardia. As music advisor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, Juan Blanco programed new music by international and Cuban composers. As music director of the Instituto Cubano de Artes e Industrias Cinematográficas, Leo Brouwer recruited composers who shared his interest in experimental music. The chapter’s case studies prove that experimental music in Cuba was not aimed at an elite group of initiated avant-gardists but reflected the new political and social climate, in which all types of music were meant to reach as wide a segment of the population as possible.

Résumé :
This book details the new forms of workers' protest and opposition that have developed as Japan's economy has transformed over the past three decades and highlights their impact upon the country's policymaking process. Drawing on a new dataset charting protest events from the 1980s to the present, the book produces the first systematic study of Japan's new precarious labor movement. It details the movement's rise during Japan's post-bubble economic transformation and highlights the different and innovative forms of dissent that mark the end of the country's famously non-confrontational industrial relations. In doing so, moreover, the book shows how this new pattern of industrial and social tension is reflected within the country's macroeconomic policymaking, resulting in a new policy dissensus that has consistently failed to offer policy reforms that would produce a return to economic growth. As a result, the book argues that the Japanese model of capitalism has therefore become increasingly disorganized.
