Résumé :

Genomic structural variations are significant causes of genome diversity and complex diseases. With advances in sequencing technologies, many algorithms have been designed to identify structural differences using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Due to repetitions in the human genome and the short reads produced by NGS, the discovery of structural variants (SVs) by state-of-the-art SV callers is not always accurate. To improve performance, multiple SV callers are often used to detect variants. However, most SV callers suffer from high false-positive rates, which diminishes the overall performance, especially in low-coverage genomes. In this article, we propose a post-processing classification–based algorithm that can be used to filter structural variation predictions produced by SV callers. Novel features are defined from putative SV predictions using reads at the local regions around the breakpoints. Several classifiers are employed to classify the candidate predictions and remove false positives. We test our classifier models on simulated and real genomes and show that the proposed approach improves the performance of state-of-the-art algorithms.

Résumé :

The earthquake on September 30, 2009 occurred in West Sumatra had caused great loses and damages in several cities, including the central market known as Pasar Raya in Padang City. This condition had led to various malfunctions and local communities were unable to meet post-disaster needs. The government as the authority was not fully in line with local needs that caused the occurrence of several conflicts of interest between the Government and the traders of Pasar Raya. This research is applying the qualitative approach with descriptive types. The informants are selected through purposive sampling technique consisting of traders and the government of Padang City. The data collection techniques are in-depth interviews, document studies, and focus group discussions (FGD). The study results show that the conflicts were no longer took place openly due to the compromise among parties involved with points as follows: a) the involvement of third parties to resolve the conflict, b) personal approach to the traders, c) resolving conflicts through non-litigation by the government.

Résumé :

Until a decade ago, a comprehensive contestation of the so-called ?transitional? paradigm was largely missing in the post-socialist era. This reality changed in the last ten years, especially in the region of former Yugoslavia. Some social movements in this region have started questioning the very essence of the economic and social misconceptions of the post-socialist condition. This paper first provides an elaboration of the very conceptual edifice of the ruling paradigm (hence the object of the critique of the three social movements in question), as well as a theoretical and methodological framework. It goes on to map out the epistemic discursive content of the respective social movements in Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo, thereby assessing the conceptual content of their critique of the post-socialist transitional paradigm. Finally, given the similarities between Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the paper seeks to explain variations in the critique by how the structural and contextual features impact the perspective from which it is constructed.

This study aims to explore the concepts of ‘place' and ‘place-experience' within the context of Post-phenomenology. During 70's, humanistic geographers have introduced ‘phenomenology of place' as a revolutionary approach toward place, which has been largely condemned by Marxist, Feminist and Post-Structural critiques through the last three decades. Accordingly, this study attempts to merge these place-related critiques in order to clarify a new framework titled ‘Post-phenomenology of place'. ‘Post-phenomenology', as a novel philosophical trend, is a merged school of thought, trying to re-read phenomenology based on Post-structuralism, Pragmatism and Materialism. In this study after a theoretical review on the formation of Post-phenomenology, the various aspects of place are discussed in order to clarify distinctions and paradoxes between phenomenological and Post-phenomenological understandings of place.

Résumé :

This paper aims to establish the theoretical and empirical link between structural change and financial fragility based on the theories of Thirllwall's Law and Minsky's financial instability. In order to do so, a descriptive and econometric panel analysis is carried out for 1846 Colombian companies during the period 1996-2015. A new indicator of financial fragility is created, and from this a relationship is established between the company's balance sheets, structural change, economic growth, the size of the firm, and the Minsky effect that measures the endogeneity of the debt cycle.

During earthquakes, buildings are subjected to loads well beyond their usual demands, resulting in high stresses in the structural components and additional inertial forces coming from the non-structural elements. When post-installed anchors are used to form the connection between non-structural or structural members and the primary reinforced concrete structure, these anchors are also subjected to high seismic demands. To determine whether a post-installed anchor is suitable for such applications, it is assessed for its performance under seismic demands. In this review paper, the current European approach for testing and qualification of post-installed anchors under seismic actions is reviewed and discussed in the context of structural applications where anchors are used to form the connection between structural members that participate in the load-transfer mechanism against seismic loads. The first part of this paper provides a description of the testing procedures and the criteria against which the anchor performance is assessed. The procedures and assessment criteria are discussed regarding the suitability in the case of the above-described structural applications. In the second part, the qualification of anchors under seismic actions is discussed in the light of an upcoming performance-based design approach for anchors. In such an approach, information on the displacement and hysteretic behavior of an anchor in a broader range of the load–displacement curve is of vital importance. Therefore, additional testing approaches might be required in order to supplement the information on anchor performance provided in the current testing procedures. One such testing approach for pulsating tension load is reported.

Résumé :

In this paper I use a (post)phenomenological approach to clarify the objective cultural expansion of our technology. Thus, I establish a conceptual analogy between two different philosophical analyses of human–machine relations – one historical and one phenomenological. I develop the analogy between them and their corresponding concepts in several steps. (1) First, I present the Homo sapiens technicus tendency and then the phenomenological differentiation between body schema and body image. All of these elucidate our involvement with machines. (2) Then, I conceptualize the term ‘context’, coupling its structural stability with the idea of distextaulity in order to achieve a better empirical understanding of our technological contradictions. (3) I continue to develop and enrich the analogy by illuminating the functional similarities – fluid boundary, automation, complexity – between contextual structures on the one hand and body schemata on the other. (4) Finally, I explore a deeper causal and narrative connection between those strands, shedding light on an interesting twofold circularity: a circular causation and a double narrative within Homo sapiens technicus.

Résumé :

This paper analyses spatio‐temporal variation of land prices in two single localities by means of structural time series modelling formalism that combines the flexibility of a time series model with that of the interpretation of a regression analysis. The extension of conventional hedonic models by introducing unobserved components for trend and cycle resulted to significant improvements in their post‐sample predictive accuracy. In predictive testing, for most model formulations the unobserved component approach generated only a marginal average prediction error when compared to the orthodox hedonic models, which, in contrast, yielded to a considerable amount of systematic prediction error. It therefore seems that the structural time‐series modelling paradigm offers a more viable alternative to the hedonic analysis of land prices than the conventional approach based on least squares estimates. The effect of slope component in the trend specification was found to be statistically insignificant, which implies that the elementary local level model would be the most adequate description of the long‐term land price movements.

Résumé :

The purpose of this research is to measure the effectiveness of constructivist learning approach in structural study specifically for architecture students. Theoretically, improving student’s performance in mathematics is challenging for today education. In architectural education, structural study is part of the non- design courses in the syllabus under the area of technology and environment and it involve in mathematical calculations. In the context of typical classrooms that adopt conventional teaching method, students are usually taught using structured rules based on the given academic syllabus. However, teaching architecture students need a different approach. This is because architecture students learn by understanding the application into practice rather than by only solving the principleproblem. Purposive sampling which is the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) was selected as the method of the study and teaching experiment was conducted. In the experimental structural design, 26 groups of architecture students were tested based on two situations; pre-test (original) and post-test (change), and tests are conducted according to the stages and times set for each topic. The experiment was designed based on the Constructivist learning approach as foundation of the experiment to study the mathematical creativity of the students. The findings show that there are positive impacts on creativity in the subject of structural study which beneficially affects their understanding and application abilities. Further research needs to done to ensure this beneficial outcome can be greatly support students’ long-term retention of knowledge and skills. An approach guardrail transition for use with concrete safety shape barriers was developed and crash-tested. The transition was constructed with two nested thrie-beam rails, measuring 2.66 mm thick, and supported by nine W150 x 13.5 steel posts. Post spacings consisted of one at 292 mm, five at 476 mm, and three at 952 mm. Structural tube spacer blockouts were used in the transition system. The system successfully met the Test Level 3 requirements specified in NCHRP Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features.

Résumé :

This paper presents an approach to evaluate residual capacity of fire-damaged concrete structures. The approach involves capturing response in three stages; namely, structural response at ambient conditions (prior to fire exposure), thermo-mechanical response during fire exposure, and post-fire residual response after cooling down of the structural member. The proposed approach is implemented in a comprehensive numerical model developed in the finite element computer program ABAQUS for specifically evaluating residual capacity of an RC beam after exposure to different fire scenarios. Predictions from the numerical model are utilized to highlight importance of each stage of analysis in evaluating realistic residual capacity of fire damaged concrete members.

Résumé :

The aim of the work is to identify semantically meaningful structures of musical texts that vividly represent the original compositional style not from the standpoint of their uniqueness, but as a complex multilayered semantic space. Methodology. This allows reaching a different analytical discourse which is the basis of a cultural approach that operates broader analytical means and is used to comprehend the composer's worldview, identify the significance of his stylistic foundations of creativity and understand the complex semantic processes of the composer's concept sphere as a whole. Scientific novelty consists in revealing semantically significant structural elements of musical texts at the pre-text, textual and post-text levels of meaning formation. Results. By analyzing the works of the Kharkiv composer V. Ptushkin, the content levels of musical texts are revealed, and the structural elements of musical speech are analyzed. The practical significance. The information contained in this paper may be used for further research and developing methodological material for the new courses of lectures and seminars in history and theory of Ukrainian culture.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the influence of tendon layout, pre-stressing force, bond condition and concrete spalling on the structural behaviour of two-way post-tensioned flat slabs at elevated temperatures. Design/methodology/approach Fire tests of four scale specimens of two-way post-tensioned concrete flat slabs were performed and analysed. Three of them were provided with bonded tendons, while the other was unbonded for comparison. The fabrication of specimens, phenomena observed during testing, temperature distributions, deflections and occurrence of concrete spalling were examined. Findings Different degrees of concrete spalling observed at the soffit had significant effects on the temperature distribution and stress redistribution. This was the major reason for the progressive concrete spalling observed, resulting in loss of structural integrity and stiffness. Originality/value The structural behaviour of two-way post-tensioned concrete flat slabs at elevated temperatures is less understood compared to their one-way counterparts. Therefore, the present study has focused on the structural behaviour of two-way post-tensioned concrete flat slabs with bonded tendons in fire, a field in which relatively little information on experimental work can be found.

Résumé :

ZnO Nanostructures have been successfully deposited on of Porous silicon (PSi) via wet colloid chemical approach. PSi was prepared by electrochemical etching method. ZnO/PSi thin films were annealed in different temperature in the range of 300 °C to 700 °C. Surface morphology studies were conducted using field emission scanning microscopy (FESEM). Flower-like structures of ZnO were clearly seen at annealing temperature of 500 °C. The X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD) have been used to investigate the structural properties. There are three dominant peaks referred to plane (100), (002) and (101) indicates that ZnO has a polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structures. Plane (002) shows the highest intensities at annealing temperature of 500 °C. Based on plane (002) analysis, the sizes were in range of 30.78 nm to 55.18. In addition, it was found that the texture coefficient of plane (002) is stable compared to plane (100) and (101).

Résumé :

This study is aimed to investigate presupposition in The Jakarta Post daily newspaper�s articles in political column. It covers two problems: types of presupposition and triggers of presupposition. Those problems were identified by applying presupposition theory. The data were interpreted by using descriptive qualitative method since it intended to describe a large number of sentences, clauses and phrases rather than numbers. The result of the study showed that the most frequent was existential presupposition with 202 occurences (78.59%), followed by factive presupposition with 2 occurences (0.79%), lexical presupposition with 36 occurences (14%), structural presupposition with 11 occurences (4.28%), non-factive presupposition with 2 occurences (0.79%) and counterfactual presupposition with 4 occurrences (1.56%). Besides, the study also showed the existence of 691 presupposition triggers which consisted of 631 definite descriptions (90.92%), 2 factive items (0.28%) which was similar to the existence of change of state verbs, 6 implicative verbs (0.86%), 6 itteratives (0.86%), 21 temporal (3.02%), 13 comparisons and contrast (1.87%), 8 questions (1.15%) and 3 counterfactual conditionals (0.43%). Finally, the findings showed that both types and triggers of presuppositions were related each other.Keywords: presupposition, types of presupposition, triggers of presupposition, political column, The Jakarta Post.

The transition was constructed with 3.43-mm-thick (10-gauge) thrie-beam rail and was supported by nine W6 × 9 steel posts. Post spacings consisted of one at 292 mm (11.5 in.), five at 476 mm (1 ft 6.75 in.), and three at 952 mm (3 ft 1.5 in.). A structural tube spacer block (TS 7 × 4 × 3/16) was also developed for use with the thrie-beam rail. Two full-scale vehicle crash tests were performed, and the system was shown to meet the Test Level 3 requirements specified in NCHRP Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features.

Problem and goal. The article describes how to organize electronic training materials for post-training support. The relevance of the article is determined, on the one hand, by the external needs to expand the sphere of education, the tasks of further development of informatization of education, and on the other hand, by the internal needs of the development of the information culture of students [1; 13; 6-8]. The problem is determined by the presence of a contradiction between the existing high didactic potential of distance post-training support, the importance of such training for effective training of students and the absence of such training, implemented using a structural approach to the design and use of electronic training materials. The purpose of the article is to describe approaches to the development and testing of a system of electronic training materials implemented on the basis of the structural approach for organizing post-training support using distance learning technologies. Methodology. The methodological basis was the ideas for the implementation of distance learning presented in the works of A.A. Andreeva, E.S. Polat, V.I. Soldatkina et al.; the main provisions of the theory of technologization of the learning process, which were studied by V.P. Bespalko, P.I. Pidkasisty, G.K. Selevko, A.M. Sohor et al.; issues of structuring training materials that were considered by I.V. Akimova, A.I. Arkhipova, Yu.I. Askerko, I.V. Burov, S.A. Butakov, L.P. Voronina, D.V. Danilov, A.M. Sokhor, O.E. Filippov, L.S. Chernyshov and others. Scientific articles devoted to issues of corporate training and personnel development are presented by such authors as: A. Bychkov, O. Dugina, Zh. Zavyalova, I. Kolodkina, A. Korolkov, A. Matveev, A. Miroshnichenko, O. Naydenov, M.V. Klarin, A. Novikova, N. Titova, N. Khryashchev, O. Emikh, A. Satvalov. Results. The feasibility of using distance learning technologies in the implementation of post-training support for students, as well as the application of a structural approach to the design and use of a training materials system for distance post-training support for students is substantiated. The principles and conditions of using the structural approach as the basis for the design and use of specially selected training materials, systematized in the form of a set of competencies and presented using distance learning forms, have been identified. Information and telecommunication technologies and Internet resources have been selected to organize remote post-training support, taking into account the individual learning path. Conclusion. The results led to the conclusion that the effectiveness of the proposed approaches to the selection, design and use of a system of training materials allows us to take into account the following aspects: accounting for training parameters, level of development, level of competency, level of motivation. The proposed model of distance post-training support for students on the example of the discipline “Information Technologies in the Management of the Educational Process”, based on the use of a structural approach, containing a specially designed system of electronic training materials, has made it possible to increase the effectiveness of training for undergraduates and to build an individual training route.

Résumé :

The public sector is about providing services, managing resources efficiently and securing a return on investment. Producing results and managing performance depends on adaptation, flexibility and creativity. While one may argue for greater control to achieve performance indicators, this has to be underpinned by managerial control systems both internally and externally. Post NPM reforms have tried to respond to the problem of single purpose organisations that have distanced political control. While post NPM reforms tipped the scale toward more political control, it did not restore the balance between control and autonomy. In view of the NPM and post NPM reforms and the accompanying challenges, the paper argues that it is not possible to device a “one size fits all” response to these challenges. In trying to analyse the dilemma of balancing political control and institutional autonomy an institutional theoretical perspective is used by analysing structural and instrumental features (national political environment), cultural features (historical administrative traditions) and external constraints (technical and institutional environments). It needs to be recognised that the aforementioned features have constraints. The structural and instrumental features specify the formal constraints on leaderships decisions. These constraints may give political leaders strong hierarchical control or may not give them much direction, but a lot of potential discretionary influence. The cultural features specify that public organisations develop informal norms and values which lead to a distinct institutional culture. While these informal norms and values are infused in formal structures and decision making, it may be inconsistent with the sub-culture, thereby giving it less systemic influence. The technical and institutional environment which focuses on efficiency production and internal culture may develop beliefs over time that cannot be ignored. Christensen (2008:13) refers to this as the There Is No Alternative principle which has a deterministic potential. While recognising these constraints, the adoption of an institutional perspective provides a more holistic approach to creating synergy between the political and bureaucratic environments.

The article considers the names of famous people contained in textbooks on Russian as a foreign language; the structural and semantic approach to the analysis of such anthroponyms and the methodology of working with them in order to form background cultural knowledge and anthroponymic worldviews among foreign students are identified as one of the teaching problems. Personal names reflect the national culture and national mentality of Russian people. Studying the functioning of precedent names in texts, structural and semantic analysis of anthroponyms in Russian as a foreign language classes, the system of pre-text and post-text tasks enriches foreign students with information about the Russian naming system, with knowledge of Russian culture. Students also discover a different culture and stereotypes of communicative behavior of its carriers.

Also we have used (Vasconellos and Kish) model to support our results of merger-acquisition integration through implies the model to our two companies, the results support our opinion that M/A integration can improve and make progress and successful result to the companies which interred to M/A integration process.The extent to which the organizational provides an infrastructure of firms support is also quite at adequate levels and expected to have a positive correlation with the post-merger outcomes for the Jordanian companies. Individuals- willingness to have the information is in the lowest level of association with the performance and integration of the organization.Counterintuitively, the analyzed leading to a cohesive of the behavioral theory of the post-merger, and has a paves away of the scholar to study and applied the integration dynamics and using mathematical models which can be tailored as specific circumstances.

Scar-related reentry is the most common mechanism of monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) in patients with structural heart disease. Catheter ablation has assumed an increasingly important role in the management of VT in this setting, and has been shown to reduce VT recurrence and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) shocks. The approach to mapping and ablation will depend on the underlying heart disease etiology, VT inducibility and haemodynamic stability. This review explores pre-procedural planning, approach to ablation of both mappable and unmappable VT, and post-procedural testing. Future developments in techniques and technology that may improve outcomes are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of service quality, perceived usefulness and users’ cognitive satisfaction to determine the third-generation (3G) mobile phone users’ behavioural retention in using 3G telecommunications services. Design/methodology/approach A total of 243 valid questionnaires were collected from 3G users in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The combination of partial least squares (PLS) path modelling approach and structural equation modelling (SEM; PLS-SEM) technique was used to analyze the measurement and structural model. Findings Our empirical assessment supports the proposed research hypotheses and further suggests that service quality is a second-order reflective construct comprising navigation and visual design, management and customer service and system reliability and connection quality. Originality/value Prior studies have examined the impact of service quality, perceived usefulness, overall users’ satisfaction and behavioural intention on an information system in general. This study is among the few studies that have attempted to gain insights into 3G users’ post-adoption experience with telecommunications services.

Recent research endeavors in civil engineering have attempted to apply remote sensing technology to urban damage assessment as an aid for post-disaster reconnaissance and recovery. In these attempts, urban structural damage is identified based on pre- and post-disaster satellite images with the use of a pattern classification approach. The result is usually presented in a damage map wherein categorical damage levels, such as “fully collapsed,” “partially collapsed,” or “intact,” are assigned to urban subregions or individual structures in images. However, a major limitation in past attempts is the use of deterministic approaches to classify damage levels. In general, these approaches are not able to capture the inherent uncertainties of structural damage and lack scalability when analyzing damage to built urban subregions of different sizes. To address this, a probabilistic classification framework by means of a multiclass classifier is proposed. By applying this probabilistic approach, classification of urban damage provides posterior probabilities, which can be used to quantify decision uncertainties and to obtain regional urban damage classification. Numerical experiments are conducted using satellite images acquired from a recent earthquake and a tsunami event, namely the 2003 Bam, Iran Earthquake, and the 2004 India Ocean Tsunami.

In examining post-war south korea, we cannot but be struck by the rapid decrease of farm work and the dizzying increases in urban production and petty-entrepreneurial work over the course of a single generation. It is remarkable, for example, that from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s the farming population declined by almost 50 percent. Indeed, South Korea is an exemplar in the development industry and a popular example in the annals of development studies (Amsden 1989). Sociologists, however, have reached little consensus about the meaning of these structural transformations and the nature of their effects on individual and familial trajectories. In consideration of the reorganization of the labor market, even some of the most basic numbers are debated because analysts do not agree on how to characterize and classify post–Korean War jobs.

The aim of this research is investigating the effect of training structural-systematic approach components on marital quality and problem solving of couples. General plan of research is a quasi-experimental with pre-post test and control group. Statistic population includes all clients of psychology and counselling clinic of Ferdowsi Mashhad University couples with marital conflicts and issue in problem solving in 2014. Sample size includes 10 couples in each control and examination group. Examination group has received 10 couple-therapy structural-systematic group meetings. Research tools were two questionnaires; revised marital quality scale and family problem solving (2010). To analyse data ANCOVA method has been used. For analysing data SPSS software has been used. Results have indicated that structural-systematic approach results in significance increment of marital quality and couple problem solving in comparison to control group. It can be said that structural-systematic approach may has a significant effect on family structure having a systematic and comprehensive approach and tries to solve happened problems and defects changing family structure. Shape memory alloy was firstly used commercially as a hydraulic coupling in the Grumman F14A in 1971. It is today used among others to improve structural behaviours such as buckling of composite plates in the aerospace vehicles. In this paper, finite element model and its source code for thermal post-buckling of shape memory alloy laminated composite plates is presented. The shape memory alloy wires induced stress that improved the strain energy, stiffness and thus the buckling behaviour of the composite plates. The finite element formulation catered the combined properties of the composite and shape memory alloys, the addition of the recovery stress and the temperature dependent properties of the shape memory alloys and the composite matrix. This study showed that by embedding shape memory alloy within layers of composite plates, post-buckling behaviours of composite plates can be improved substantially.

Transparent polymer interlayer foils are widely used to increase the safety of glass applications, mainly in construction and automotive industry. In case one or more glass sheets in a laminate fracture, the remaining structural capacity (i.e. stiffness and strength) highly depends on the solicitation and mechanical properties of the interlayer. In such a post-breakage state, the interlayer is subjected to a complex combination of phenomena such as partial delamination, large strain deformation, strain hardening, rupture, etc. In partim 1, an analytical model is presented in order to describe the mechanical behavior of glass laminates in post-breakage state for a simple configuration. In addition, the theoretical model is compared to experimental results in part 2, which is published together with part 1.

Abstract With this inquiry, we seek to develop a disaggregated version of the post-Keynesian approach to economic growth, by showing that indeed it can be treated as a particular case of the Pasinettian model of structural change and economic expansion. By relying upon vertical integration it becomes possible to carry out the analysis initiated by Kaldor (1956) and Robinson (1956, 1962), and followed by Dutt (1984), Rowthorn (1982) and later Bhaduri and Marglin (1990) in a multi-sectoral model in which demand and productivity increase at different paces in each sector. By adopting this approach it is possible to show that the structural economic dynamics is conditioned not only to patterns of evolving demand and diffusion of technological progress but also to the distributive features of the economy, which can give rise to different regimes of economic growth. Besides, we find it possible to determine the natural rate of profit that makes the mark-up rate to be constant over time.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the market structure of Vietnam’s banking sector during 1999-2009, which is after the introduction of the two-tier banking system, using the non-structural (Panzar–Rosse) model. Design/methodology/approach The authors consider a more comprehensive range of specifications, in terms of a greater number of environmental covariates and different dependent variables, than in the previous applications of this model. Further, this is the first study that uses lagged input prices (to avoid endogeneity), excludes assets (to avoid specification bias) and includes a lagged dependent variable (to avoid dynamic panel bias) in such a study of the Vietnamese banking system. Findings The authors find that the Vietnamese banking system operates in monopoly. Originality/value The main contribution of this paper is to determine the market structure in the recent period after the Vietnamese banking system was transformed into a less centralised, two-tier system. This study is the first to uniquely identify the market structure of this developing economy’s banking system (using data only for Vietnam and not observations from other countries) in a post-transition period.

Abstract In this article, we extend the literature on merger simulation models by incorporating its potential synergy gains into structural econometric analysis. We present an integrated approach. We estimate a structural demand and supply model dealing with two-part tariff contracts between manufacturers and retailers as in Bonnet and Dubois (2010). This model allows us to recover the marginal cost of each differentiated product. Then we estimate potential efficiency gains using the data envelopment analysis approach of Bogetoft and Wang (2005), and some assumptions about exogenous cost shifters. In the last step, we simulate the new price equilibrium post-merger by taking into account synergy gains, and derive price and welfare effects. We use a home scan data set of dairy dessert purchases in France, and show that synergy gains could offset the upward pressure on prices post. Moreover, in this market, the increase in industry profit due to the merger is more driven by its induced synergy gains than by the market power increase.

Structural nonlinearity identification is critical for post-event damage detection or condition evaluation of engineering structures after strong dynamic excitation such as earthquake where structural nonlinear behaviour should be considered. Structural nonlinear restoring force provides direct indicator describing structural damage initiation and development procedure. Considering the availability of structural dynamic response measurement and the difficulty in defining a parametric model for structural nonlinearity and in estimating structure mass accurately in practice, in this article, a time-domain structural nonlinear restoring force and mass identification approach for multi-degree-of-freedom structures under incomplete excitation using limited acceleration measurements but without using any parametric models of structural nonlinear restoring force is proposed. At first, a memory fading extended Kalman filter with a weighted globl iteration (MF-EKF-WGI) is used to identify the location of nonlinearities and then a Chebyshev polynomial nonparametric model is introduced to model the nonlinear restoring force. The unscented Kalman filter is used to identify the structural responses and the parameters of the Chebyshev polynomial to describe structural nonlinearity. Numerical and experimental studies with a four-storey frame model structure equipped with a magnetorheological damper, which is employed to mimic structural nonlinear behaviour, under impact excitations are carried out to validate the performance of the proposed approach using acceleration measurements at certain degrees of freedom. Numerical and experimental results show that the proposed approach is capable of identifying both structural nonlinear restoring force and mass with acceptable accuracy even with a very rough initial mass estimation. The proposed time-domain identification approach can be used to detect structural damage initiation and development process and to evaluate energy consumption quantitatively of engineering structures under dynamic loadings.

Fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) has wide spectrum of advantages in tunnelling. Post-cracking behaviour of FRC wasn’t taken into account by Russian engineers while structural design led to underestimation of material abilities. New approach is based on fib Model Code 2010, which provides residual tensile strength Class of FRC. Research Center “FRC” (http://rcfrc.com/) carried out tests with specimens of different types of FRC, which supported by Russian Foundation for Basic Research. Research involved different specimens – plain concrete and FRC with macro-synthetic fibre of different dosage and types. The results showed the efficiency of each type of fibre. The Class of FRC was defined for each specimen series according to results.

In this work, the piezoceramic-based transducers are used to perform the structural health monitoring (SHM) and interface damage detecting of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frames retrofitted by post-installed RC walls. In order to develop the post-embedded piezoceramic-based transducers that can be used to identify interface failure or cracks between two structural members in retrofit construction, this work adopts the cyclic loading to test two specimens with post-embedded piezoceramic-based transducers (PPT). Since the failure of an interface between the post-installed wall and beam occurs, one of the specimens has damage in the foundation and existing boundary column and the other has damage in the top ends of column and wall. During the cyclic loading test, one transducer was used as an actuator to generate the stress waves and the other transducers were used as the sensors to detect the waves. In damaged specimens, the existence and locations of cracks and the interface damage can be detected by analyzing the wave response. Moreover, the severity of damage to the specimens can also be estimated. The experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the piezoceramic-based approach in the SHM and locating damage in shear-critical RC structural members under the seismic loading.

Purpose Al2O3 used as gate dielectric enables exploitation of higher electric field capacity of SiC, improving capacitive coupling and memory retention in flash memories. Passivation of traps at interface and in bulk which causes serious threat is necessary for better performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of post-deposition rapid thermal annealing (PDA) and post-metallization annealing (PMA) on the structural and electrical characteristics of Pd/Al2O3/6H-SiC capacitors. Design/methodology/approach Al2O3 film is deposited by ALD; PDA is performed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) in N2 at 900°C for 1 min and PMA in forming gas for 10 and 40 min. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements data are studied in addition to capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for the fabricated Pd/Al2O3/SiC capacitors. Conduction mechanism contributing to the gate leakage current is extracted for the entire range of gate electric field. Findings RTA forms aluminum silicide at the interface causing an increase in the density of the interface states and gate leakage current for devices with an annealed film, when compared with an as-deposited film. One order improvement in leakage current has been observed for the devices with RTA, after subjecting to PMA for 40 min, compared with those devices for which PMA was carried out for 10 min. Whereas, no improvement in leakage current has been observed for the devices on as-deposited film, even after subjecting to PMA for 40 min. Conduction mechanisms contributing to gate leakage current are extracted for the investigated Al2O3/SiC capacitors and are found to be trapfilled limit process at low-field regions; trapassisted tunneling in the mid-field regions and Fowler–Nordheim (FN) tunneling are dominating in high-field regions. Originality/value The effect of PDA and PMA on the structural and electrical characteristics of Pd/Al2O3/SiC capacitors suitable for flash memory applications is investigated in this paper.

Résumé :

Introduction: The peak temperature is one of the most important factors to evaluate the structural damage. Due to the reduction in the tensile strength of the steel, the structural stress is redistributed and the bearing capacity is decreased at the elevated temperature. Methods: This paper presents an inverse method to evaluate the peak temperature for the steel structures subjected to fire. An initial temperature field is assumed based on the post-fire structural residual displacement, and a temperature iteration function is developed to approach the peak temperature of the structure in fire by minimizing the difference between the measured and numerical results. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the structural behavior of a spatial structure subjected to fire. The temperature and displacement data were recorded. Result and Conclusion: Results show that the measured results have a good agreement with the predicted results, demonstrating that the proposed method in this paper is available for evaluate the peak temperature with a desirable accuracy. The inverse method of the temperature field can provide a theoretical basis for scientifically evaluating the residual displacements of the post-fire structure and formulating reliable repair and reinforcement schemes.

Résumé :

The process of air transport liberalization in Colombia began in 1991. Liberalization entailed the entry of private capital into the airport sector which subsequently led, in several temporary phases, to the privatization of the country’s main airports. Simultaneously, new air operators entered the market. This new market situation, supported by the complete deregulation of airfares, generated a dynamic and sustained growth of air transport in Colombia for two decades. Within the context of post-liberalization, this article presents a forecast (medium-term – 5 years period) of air traffic in the country’s main airport using DLMs (Dynamic Linear Models). It has the following advantages vs. the usual forecast calculation methodologies: it detects stochastic tendencies that are hidden in the time series. It also detects structural changes that allow estimating the variable effect of exogenous shocks over time without increasing the number of parameters. From the results obtained, it should be noted that the application of DLMs presents MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) values below 1%, which guarantees predictions of higher accuracy and thus introduces a new alternative model to develop reliable forecasts in air transport, at least in the medium-term.

Purpose – This paper introduces a model of social repair to the language of disaster recovery that potentially provides a new way of conceptualizing reconstruction and recovery processes by drawing attention to the dismantling of structural inequities that inhibit post-disaster recovery. Design/methodology/approach – The paper first engages with the current discourse of vulnerability reduction and resilience building as embedded within a distinct politics of post-disaster recovery. The concept of social repair is then explored as found within post-conflict and reconciliation literature. For application within the context of natural disasters, the concept of social repair is modified to have evaluative and effectiveness significance for disaster recovery. A short case example is presented from post-flood Pakistan to deepen our understanding of the potential application and usage of a social repair orientation to disaster recovery. Findings – The paper recommends that the evaluative goals of post-disaster recovery projects should be framed in the language of social repair. This means that social relationships (broadly defined) must be restored and transformed as a result of any disaster recovery intervention, and relationship mapping exercises should be conducted with affected communities prior to planning recovery interventions. Originality/value – Current discourses of disaster recovery are rooted within the conceptual framings of reducing vulnerabilities and building resilience. While both theoretical constructs have made important contributions to the disaster recovery enterprise, they have been unable to draw sufficient attention to pre-existing structural inequities. As disaster recovery and reconstruction projects influence the ways communities negotiate and manage future risk, it is important that interventions do not lead to worsened states of inequity.
