Résumé :
Channel pruning has been demonstrated as a highly effective approach to compress large convolutional neural networks. Existing differentiable channel pruning methods usually use deterministic soft masks to scale the channelwise outputs and explore an appropriate threshold on the masks to remove unimportant channels, which sometimes causes unexpected damage to the network accuracy when there are no sweet spots that clearly separate important channels from redundant ones. In this article, we introduce a new differentiable channel pruning method based on polarization of probabilistic channelwise soft masks (PPSMs). We use variational inference to approximate the posterior distributions of the masks and simultaneously exploit a polarization regularization to push the probabilistic masks towards either 0 or 1; thus, the channels with near-zero masks can be safely eliminated with little hurt on network accuracy. Our method significantly relieves the difficulty faced by the existing methods to find an appropriate threshold on the masks. The joint inference and polarization of probabilistic soft masks enable PPSM to yield better pruning results than the state of the arts. For instance, our method prunes 65.91% FLOPs of ResNet50 on the ImageNet dataset with only 0.7% model accuracy degradation.

Résumé :
The transmission characteristics of Pigeon pea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV) to pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) by its eriophyid mite vector, Aceria cajani, were studied. Nonviruliferous A. cajani colonies were established on detached healthy leaflets of a PPSMV-immune pigeon pea cultivar floating on water. The transmission efficiency of single A. cajani was up to 53% but was 100% when >5 mites per plant were used. A. cajani acquired PPSMV after a minimum acquisition access period (AAP) of 15 min and inoculated virus after a minimum inoculation access period (IAP) of 90 min. No latent period was observed. Starvation of A. cajani prior to, or following, PPSMV acquisition reduced the minimum AAP and IAP periods to 10 min and 60 min, respectively, and mites retained virus for up to 13 h. None of the mites that developed from eggs taken from PPSMV-infected leaves transmitted the virus, indicating that it is not transmitted transovarially. Taken together, these data suggest a semipersistent mode of transmission of PPSMV by A. cajani.

Résumé :
Three hundred and sixty, sixweek old Japanese quail hens (Coturnix coturnix japonica)were used to evaluate the effect of processed pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) seed meal (PPSM) on egg quality characteristics of laying birds. The processingmethodswere soaking (24, 48 and 72 hours), fermentation (72 hours), boiling (60minutes) and roasting (30minutes). The birds were divided into eight groups of 45 per treatment each replicated three times with 15 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. The birds were raised in cages measuring 75cm × 75cm × 60cm. Eight experimental diets were formulated containing processed PPSM at 30 % of diet representing T1 (control), T2 (raw PPSM), T3 (soaked PPSM for 24 hours), T4 (soaked PPSMfor 48 hours), T5 (soaked PPSMfor 72 hours), T6 (soaked PPSM for 24 hours and fermented for 72 hours), T7 (boiling for 60minutes) and T8 (roasted PPSM for 30 minutes) respectively. The experiment lasted for 20 weeks. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The results showed that processed PPSM had no significant (P>0.05) effect on eggweight, egg height, egg diameter, egg shape index, egg shell thickness aswell as albumen height, albumen diameter, albumen weight, yolk diameter, yolk weight, yolk index and haugh unit across the dietary treatments. It is concluded that raw and processed PPSM had no significant (P>0.05) effect on the egg quality characteristics of laying quails. In addition, inclusion of raw PPSM in quail diets posed no threat to the health status of the birds.

Résumé :
Two hundred and sixteen 7-day old brothers were used to compare three types of pigeon pea seed meal, namely raw, boiled and dehulled at two levels, 20 and 30% of the diet in a 3x2 factorially designed experiment lasting four weeks Measurements recorded included weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), nutrient retention and live weight of the broilers at the end of the fourth week. Better results were obtained when pigeon pea seed meal (PPSM) was included at 30% level than at 20% in all performance criteria. The interaction between processing method and level of inclusion was significant (P < 0.001) with dehulled PPSM included at 30% (D30) producing best results; while at 20%, dehulled PPSM was not superior to boiled PPSM. In all measurements, broilers fed boiled and dehulled PPSM performed significantly better (P<0.01) than those fed run seed meal. Results of this experiment indicated that broilers fed dehulled pigeon pea seed meal at 30% inclusion level produced best results.

Résumé :
Abstract Most potato farmers in Indonesia select the small tubers at harvest for planting in the following season, the so-called farmers’ practice (FP). This propagation method is cheap, but the small tubers may come from less healthy plants, which increases the build-up of diseases with accelerated yield decreases over the seasons. Alternatively, farmers may identify healthy plants within the growing season and select those for propagation, the so-called positive plant selection method (PPSM). An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of PPSM compared to FP on yields in the following season in the two main potato growing areas of West Java, i.e., Pangalengan and Garut. Generations G2 and G3 of cv. Granola and one generation of the imported cv. Atlantic were used. Selected seeds using PPSM and FP were planted in the second season in a randomized complete block design. Results show that yields of seeds selected through PPSM were significantly higher compared to seeds selected through FP, over both locations, on average, 7.4, 5.5 and 1.2 ton ha−1 for Granola G2 and G3, and the Atlantic, respectively. These yield increases represent an increase in the gross revenue of 30.8 to 51.8 million IDR ha−1 for Granola and 1.9 to 7.8 million IDR ha−1 for Atlantic at a farm gate price of 7,000 and 6,500 IDR kg−1, respectively. This study confirms that PPSM is superior to FP and improves the quality of the farms saved seeds.

This study examines the impact of a vocational guidance program on incarcerated individuals. Access to employment is recognized as a lever in the desistance process. However, people leaving detention have difficulty finding employment. Guidance programs are deployed in detention centers in order to define and implement professional projects. Beyond the search for concrete solutions, current guidance practices aim to develop autonomy, self-construction and the ability to rebuild one's life. Ambition is used to help shift the incarcerated people’s trajectory. A study was conducted with 32 men who were enrolled in a guidance program during their incarceration. The findings are evaluated on the basis of two types of data: first, background and knowledge related to the goals of the project, and second, the pre- and post-test results that measured psychological dimensions related to self-perceptions, i.e., the feeling of self-efficacy, self-determination, causal attributions, self-esteem and self-image. Before the program, participants' self-presentations did not appear to be functional for accessing employment or training. The results suggest that the intervention leads to a more realistic and adaptive self-presentation for future reintegration. Prospects are put forward to more effectively support the professional integration of the prison population

Ismail, Ihsan. « Implications of the PPSMI policy for the performance of Malaysian secondary schools in mathematics and science subjects ». Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/51434/.

Résumé :
The introduction of the Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science Subjects in English (PPSMI) policy to change the medium of instruction in mathematics and science subjects from Bahasa Melayu to English has raised many debates on the effectiveness of the policy and the ability of the schools, teachers and pupils to adapt to the new medium of instruction. This study evaluates the implications of the PPSMI policy for the school performance in mathematics and science subjects. The school performances before and after the implementation of the policy were assessed and compared according to school types, states, and locations by developing an advanced technique in measuring school efficiency based on hybrid returns to scale (HRS) data envelopment analysis (DEA). A new methodology of measuring change in performance over time based on the Malmquist index was also developed to measure the difference in performance before and after the implementation of the policy. The aim of developing the methodologies is to provide an alternative assessment of the implications of the PPSMI policy for the school performance in mathematics and science subjects thus helping the Ministry of Education Malaysia to decide on the direction of the PPSMI policy. The HRS DEA model is a new extension in DEA based on the concept of selective proportionality in the relationship of input-output variables. It gives a better estimate compared to the original convex models, the constant returns to scale (CRS) and the variable returns to scale (VRS), when some of the inputs and outputs have proportional relationship while others do not. In this study, an HRS-based DEA model utilising 10 inputs and 8 outputs was developed to assess the efficiency of schools from three states i.e. Kedah, Penang, and Perlis. The schools comprise of three different types i.e. the national, fully residential, and religious school-types. The efficiency was also assessed by using the CRS and VRS models to compare the results. The Malmquist index is a popular productivity index for measuring efficiency over time. The Malmquist index can be calculated from the CRS-based or the VRS-based DEA efficiency scores. This study developed a new productivity index called the HRS-based Malmquist index. This is similar to the VRS-based Malmquist index but the calculation of the index is based on the efficiency scores from the HRS DEA model. The efficiency scores and Malmquist indices of schools in different categories (i.e. school-types, states, and locations) were tested for significant difference by using nonparametric statistical tests. Nonparametric statistical tests were used due to the nonparametric nature of DEA. The statistical tests used in this study are Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test to look at independent samples such as samples from different school-types, and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Friedman's Two-Way Analysis of Variance to examine dependent samples such as the difference in performance before and after the implementation of the policy.

Tan, Hui May. « Changing the language of instruction for Mathematics and Science in Malaysia : the PPSMI policy and the washback effect of bilingual high-stakes secondary school exit exams ». Thesis, McGill University, 2010. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=86622.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This longitudinal study examines a change in the language of instruction for Mathematics and Science (M & S) subjects from Bahasa Malaysia (BM) to English in Malaysia. This policy, known by the acronym of PPSMI, has two objectives: to promote student learning of M & S, and also to increase students' proficiency in English. The Education Ministry also chose to create a washback effect by introducing a bilingual high-stakes secondary exit exam.
The study uses a framework which combines the perspectives offered by literature on educational change, content-based instruction (CBI) and washback in language testing to examine PPSMI. The research questions are interested in exploring upper secondary Math and Science teachers (MST) perceptions of the policy and the bilingual exams; in finding out what changes in MST classroom practices, how the changes occur and why; and also in determining what the washback effects of the bilingual exit exam are. It also looks at whether there are significant differences between urban and out-of-town MST in relation to all these aspects. A mixed methods approach is used for data collection and data analysis.
The results point to the complexity of educational change processes. They indicate that classroom implementation of this policy is affected by multiple factors such as MST's English proficiency, the language proficiency and academic ability of their students, MST beliefs about language in teaching content, MST perception of themselves as subject teachers and the school's linguistic environment. The study found that while the English SPM exams exerted a strong washback effect throughout the two-year cycle, the BM version created a washback effect specifically among out-of-town MST at the approach of the secondary exit exam. It also found that although PPSMI places the emphasis on both content and language, MST tended to focus on teaching content. The findings contribute to the literature on educational change, washback in language testing, and CBI and bilingual education.

In this thesis, a hybrid TH/DS multiple access UWB system using the N-ary Bi-orthogonal PPSM is proposed and an accurate performance analysis of this system is provided. The advantage of the proposed system is to increase the transmission rate and the system capacity, and also improve the system performance in terms of using TH/DS multiple access technology. The N-ary BPPSM is a combination of pulse position modulation, pulse amplitude modulation and pulse shape modulation in which the modulation level of the N-ary Bi-orthogonal PPSM can be increased. Based on the characteristic function analytical method, we derive the probability distribution of multiple access interference and the system average symbol error rate. The simulations used to verify the analytical results are carried out in AWGN and actual UWB fading channel. In order to numerical analysis and simulation results can be a fair comparison, we compare in some parts fixed signal bandwidth and data transmission rate. From the numerical analysis and simulation results, we can conclude when other system parameters are fixed that the performance of the system is improved by increasing the number of frames. As the number of users increase, the system performance degrades more. The theoretical analysis of the proposed system can be verified from the simulation results. Considering the parameters in BPPSM modulation, the SER performance can not be improved significantly when the number of pulse positions is increased. However, the system performance can be improved obviously as the number of the pulse shapes is increased.

Résumé :
This paper introduces a differentially private (DP) mechanism to protect the information exchanged during the coordination of sequential and interdependent markets. This coordination represents a classic Stackelberg game and relies on the exchange of sensitive information between the system agents. The paper is motivated by the observation that the perturbation introduced by traditional DP mechanisms fundamentally changes the underlying optimization problem and even leads to unsatisfiable instances. To remedy such limitation, the paper introduces the Privacy-Preserving Stackelberg Mechanism (PPSM), a framework that enforces the notions of feasibility and fidelity (i.e. near-optimality) of the privacy-preserving information to the original problem objective. PPSM complies with the notion of differential privacy and ensures that the outcomes of the privacy-preserving coordination mechanism are close-to-optimality for each agent. Experimental results on several gas and electricity market benchmarks based on a real case study demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. A full version of this paper [Fioretto et al., 2020b] contains complete proofs and additional discussion on the motivating application.
