Résumé :

Channel pruning has been demonstrated as a highly effective approach to compress large convolutional neural networks. Existing differentiable channel pruning methods usually use deterministic soft masks to scale the channelwise outputs and explore an appropriate threshold on the masks to remove unimportant channels, which sometimes causes unexpected damage to the network accuracy when there are no sweet spots that clearly separate important channels from redundant ones. In this article, we introduce a new differentiable channel pruning method based on polarization of probabilistic channelwise soft masks (PPSMs). We use variational inference to approximate the posterior distributions of the masks and simultaneously exploit a polarization regularization to push the probabilistic masks towards either 0 or 1; thus, the channels with near-zero masks can be safely eliminated with little hurt on network accuracy. Our method significantly relieves the difficulty faced by the existing methods to find an appropriate threshold on the masks. The joint inference and polarization of probabilistic soft masks enable PPSM to yield better pruning results than the state of the arts. For instance, our method prunes 65.91% FLOPs of ResNet50 on the ImageNet dataset with only 0.7% model accuracy degradation.

Résumé :

The transmission characteristics of Pigeon pea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV) to pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) by its eriophyid mite vector, Aceria cajani, were studied. Nonviruliferous A. cajani colonies were established on detached healthy leaflets of a PPSMV-immune pigeon pea cultivar floating on water. The transmission efficiency of single A. cajani was up to 53% but was 100% when >5 mites per plant were used. A. cajani acquired PPSMV after a minimum acquisition access period (AAP) of 15 min and inoculated virus after a minimum inoculation access period (IAP) of 90 min. No latent period was observed. Starvation of A. cajani prior to, or following, PPSMV acquisition reduced the minimum AAP and IAP periods to 10 min and 60 min, respectively, and mites retained virus for up to 13 h. None of the mites that developed from eggs taken from PPSMV-infected leaves transmitted the virus, indicating that it is not transmitted transovarially. Taken together, these data suggest a semipersistent mode of transmission of PPSMV by A. cajani.

Three hundred and sixty, sixweek old Japanese quail hens (Coturnix coturnix japonica)were used to evaluate the effect of processed pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) seed meal (PPSM) on egg quality characteristics of laying birds. The processingmethodswere soaking (24, 48 and 72 hours), fermentation (72 hours), boiling (60minutes) and roasting (30minutes). The birds were divided into eight groups of 45 per treatment each replicated three times with 15 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. The birds were raised in cages measuring 75cm × 75cm × 60cm. Eight experimental diets were formulated containing processed PPSM at 30 % of diet representing T1 (control), T2 (raw PPSM), T3 (soaked PPSM for 24 hours), T4 (soaked PPSMfor 48 hours), T5 (soaked PPSMfor 72 hours), T6 (soaked PPSM for 24 hours and fermented for 72 hours), T7 (boiling for 60minutes) and T8 (roasted PPSM for 30 minutes) respectively. The experiment lasted for 20 weeks. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The results showed that processed PPSM had no significant (P>0.05) effect on eggweight, egg height, egg diameter, egg shape index, egg shell thickness aswell as albumen height, albumen diameter, albumen weight, yolk diameter, yolk weight, yolk index and haugh unit across the dietary treatments. It is concluded that raw and processed PPSM had no significant (P>0.05) effect on the egg quality characteristics of laying quails. In addition, inclusion of raw PPSM in quail diets posed no threat to the health status of the birds.

Background and Purpose: Preeclampsia, a common disorder of unknown origin, presents with signs and symptoms that can be subtle, making assessment and intervention challenging. The purpose of this study was to refine the psychometric properties of an instrument designed to assess a comprehensive range of preeclampsia symptoms. Methods: Testing of the Preeclampsia Prenatal Symptom-Monitoring Scale (PPSMC) was accomplished through a retrospective, correlational, and comparative study of 100 postpartum women with preeclampsia and gestational hypertension. Results: The initial 17-item Cronbach’s alpha was .73; reliability of the current 11-item PPSMC increased to .77. Content validity index for the PPSMC (17 items) was .88; for the PPSMC (11 items), .93. Exploratory factor analysis, known group comparisons, and predictive validity lend beginning support of the instrument’s construct validity. Conclusion: This instrument may be useful in examining in greater detail the symptomatology of women with preeclampsia in practice and research settings.

Two hundred and sixteen 7-day old brothers were used to compare three types of pigeon pea seed meal, namely raw, boiled and dehulled at two levels, 20 and 30% of the diet in a 3x2 factorially designed experiment lasting four weeks Measurements recorded included weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), nutrient retention and live weight of the broilers at the end of the fourth week. Better results were obtained when pigeon pea seed meal (PPSM) was included at 30% level than at 20% in all performance criteria. The interaction between processing method and level of inclusion was significant (P < 0.001) with dehulled PPSM included at 30% (D30) producing best results; while at 20%, dehulled PPSM was not superior to boiled PPSM. In all measurements, broilers fed boiled and dehulled PPSM performed significantly better (P<0.01) than those fed run seed meal. Results of this experiment indicated that broilers fed dehulled pigeon pea seed meal at 30% inclusion level produced best results.

One hundred and twenty 4 - week old broilers were used to study the effect of substituting pigeon pea seed meal (PPSM) for groundnut cake and maize in broiler finisher rations. The 4 diet groups contained 0, 30, 40, and 50% PPSM and measurements taken in the 3 week study were weight gain, feed intake feed conversion ration and protein efficiency ratio. Results showed that body weight gain of the birds increased as the proportion of PPSM in the diets increased. The final body weights were 1.47, 1.64, 1.71 and 1.73kg for 0.30, 40, and 50% respectively. Feed and protein intake significantly increased as a result of replacing groundnut cake and maize with PPSM up to 40%, but did not show significant difference between 40 and 50%. I Feed intake figures were 96.80, 129.90, 144.30 and 142.60g and corresponding protein intake figures were 20.67, 27.64, 30.72 and 30.57g for 0, 30, 40 and 50% inclusion of PPSM respectively. Feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio did not significantly differ among the diets.

Abstract Most potato farmers in Indonesia select the small tubers at harvest for planting in the following season, the so-called farmers’ practice (FP). This propagation method is cheap, but the small tubers may come from less healthy plants, which increases the build-up of diseases with accelerated yield decreases over the seasons. Alternatively, farmers may identify healthy plants within the growing season and select those for propagation, the so-called positive plant selection method (PPSM). An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of PPSM compared to FP on yields in the following season in the two main potato growing areas of West Java, i.e., Pangalengan and Garut. Generations G2 and G3 of cv. Granola and one generation of the imported cv. Atlantic were used. Selected seeds using PPSM and FP were planted in the second season in a randomized complete block design. Results show that yields of seeds selected through PPSM were significantly higher compared to seeds selected through FP, over both locations, on average, 7.4, 5.5 and 1.2 ton ha−1 for Granola G2 and G3, and the Atlantic, respectively. These yield increases represent an increase in the gross revenue of 30.8 to 51.8 million IDR ha−1 for Granola and 1.9 to 7.8 million IDR ha−1 for Atlantic at a farm gate price of 7,000 and 6,500 IDR kg−1, respectively. This study confirms that PPSM is superior to FP and improves the quality of the farms saved seeds.

In spite of English being regarded as the second most important language in Malaysia, it is still treated as a foreign language inevitably. The recently introduced Dual Language Progamme (henceforth DLP) which uses English as the medium of instruction in teaching Mathematics and Science is alleged to be a reflection of the less successful English for teaching Mathematics and Science policy (hereafter PPSMI). Therefore, this paper aims to examine the perceptions of pre-service teachers towards the use of English in teaching Mathematics and Science and establish its connections with the DLP. Data were collected through questionnaire which involved 50 respondents. Findings showed that the respondents held unfavourable perceptions of the PPSMI policy which in turn justified the emergence of the DLP. Implications of the study and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Telehealth is a growing domain with particular relevance for remote patient monitoring. With respect to the biopsychosocial model of health, it is important to evaluate perception and satisfaction with new methods in telehealth as part of an integrative approach. The Telemedicine Perception Questionnaire (TMPQ) is a 17-item questionnaire measuring patients’ perception of and satisfaction with telecare. We translated this survey into German and determined its validity and reliability in 32 adolescents and adults. Furthermore, we derived a short version of the TMPQ, named Patient and Physician Satisfaction with Monitoring (PPSM), which is a 5-item questionnaire that can be administered to both patients and physicians. Validity and reliability were tested in 32 patients and 32 physicians. Crohnbach’s α for the translated TMPQ was 0.76, and the German version yielded high validity (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.995). We tested the PPSM in both patients and physicians and found acceptable values for Crohnbach’s α (0.72 and 0.78) with excellent validity (ICC 0.965). We therefore concluded from this small study that both German versions of the TMPQ and PPSM can be used to investigate the acceptance of telehealth applications.

Az elmúlt évek kutatási eredményei bizonyították, hogy a B-lymphocyták döntő szerepet játszanak a sclerosis multiplex (SM) patogenezisében. A betegség folyamatának jobb megértése a B-sejteket célzó antitest-terápiák kifejlesztését eredményezte, amelyek potenciális gyógyszerek lehetnek mind a relapszusos, mind a progresszív SM formáiban. A B-sejt-depletiós terápiák ezért mindinkább előtérbe kerülnek, és meghatározóak a betegség progressziójának csökkentésében. Az első B-sejt-depletáló, anti-CD20 monoklonális antitest a rituximab volt, amit sclerosis multiplexben is vizsgáltak, és a kedvező eredményeket követően újabb gyógyszerek kerültek kifejlesztésre, hasonló támadásponttal. 2017-ben az FDA, 2018-ban az EMA is engedélyezte egy másik anti-CD20 monoklonális antitest, az ocrelizumab relapszáló-remittáló sclerosis multiplex (RRSM) és primer progresszív sclerosis multiplex (PPSM) terápiájában történő bevezetését. Ez különösen jelentős előrelépés volt a PPSM kezelésében, hiszen ez volt az első gyógyszer, ami bizonyítottan csökkentette a progressziót PPSM-ben. A B-sejt-depletiós terápia új szereplőjeként nemrégiben lépett színre az ofatumumab, ami egy teljesen humán anti-CD20 monoklonális antitest. A gyógyszer alkalmazását 2021 márciusában az EMA is engedélyezte a sclerosis multiplex relapszáló formáiban (RSM). Összefoglalónkban részletesen bemutatjuk a jelenleg SM-ben alkalmazott anti-CD20 monoklonális antitest-terápiák hatásmechanizmusát és hatékonyságát.

One hundred and eighty, 4-week old broilers were used to study the performance of broiler finishers fed diets containing raw, boiled or dehulled pigeonpea seed meals included at levels of 30 and 40% of the diets in a 33 x2 factorially designed experiment. Performance criteria were daily weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), nutrient utilization and final liveweight of the broilers at the end of 8" week. Results showed that dehulled seed meal diet produced broilers with the highest daily weight gain, final liveweight and protein efficiency ratio, lowest feed intake, FCR and daily protein intake. Broilers fed boiled seed meal diet performed significantly better than those fed raw seed meal diet in all measurements. Broilers fed on 30% inclusion level of PPSM gave better results than those on 40% which significantly depressed growth rate, feed conversion efficiency, protein efficiency and increased protein intake. The interaction between processing methods and inclusion levels were not significant. There was a higher nutrient utilization of dehulled and boiled PPSM diets by broilers than the raw seed meal. Increase in the level of inclusion generally decreased protein retention except for the dehulled PPSM diet. It is concluded that a better option is to dehull boiled pigeonpea seeds and include the meal at not more than 30% of the whole ration for broiler finishers.

Constitutional conditions for participation in Monetary Union-selected issues This article discusses the changes in the constitutional regulation of Member States concerning the monetary union. Analysis have been subjected to the ECB'S recommendation concerning the need for amendment of the Constitution, in the context of the preparation of the convergence with condition of the accede to the monetary union, and the options of the new constitutional regulation after Poland entry to the eurozone. Discussed was also the issue of NBP'S authorities in the context of the participation of the Polish Central Bank into the ESCB.

The Holy See In Polish Foreign Policy of the Government on exile (September 1939 — June 1940) The article is devoted to the reexamining of the policy of Polish Government on exile toward the Holy See after Poland’s defeat in September 1939 and the reestablishment of the legal authorities of Poland in France, under President Raczkiewicz and General Sikorski as Prime Minister. Terminus ad quem of the narration is the collapse of France and transfer of the Government of Poland to London in June 1940. Problems of Vatican’s perception of Polish Question is discussed on the basis of Polish archival documents, especially those of Polish Embassy to the Holy See. Vatican-Polish relations at the beginning of the World War II require special attention because the last treatment of this highly debatable problem was made in historiography by Zofia Waszkiewicz more than thirty five years ago in her monograph Polityka Watykanu wobec Polski 1939–1945 [Policy of the Vatican toward Poland 1939—1945] (Warsaw 1980). How much Polish diplomacy achieved fighting for the Holy See’s support against Nazi Germany? Two things must be said. Firstly, the Holy See recognized the legal continuity of Polish State after the German-Soviet occupation of Poland’s territory in September 1939, but did not sent the papal nuncio to Angers, when Polish Government resided. Secondly, Polish thesis on the special significance of Polish Question as the test-case of international justice received the positive response of the Pope Pius XII in his encyclical Summi Pontificatus published on October 20 1939, but the guidelines of Vatican’s policy were based on the doctrine of strict neutrality of the Papacy in the international relations. It did not permit for Papal condemnation ex officio of the Nazi crimes and criminal policy of extermination in Poland.

Organizational Culture in the EU Regulatory AgenciesOrganizational culture means a set of values, norms, symbols, customs and traditions. In consequence it affects the interpretation of reality by employees of the organization, their behavior and impact in relation to other entities. It is also an important foundation in the process of building institutional identity. The problematic of organizational culture is a field of interest for specialists representing many different scientific disciplines. Especially private organizations, such as multicultural, transnational and transboundary active corporations undergone multiple detailed analysis both in international and in Polish context. The organizational culture of the EU regulatory agencies, by contrast, has not been analyzed yet in-depth. The article aims to explain the most important problems connected with this topic with special emphasis on the inter-governmental structure of these bodies.

The constitutional basis for religious freedom in selected countries in Europe and Latin AmericaReligion helps man keep his own identity. It enables him to participate in a common heritage. The study provides the constitutional basis for religious freedom in the individual dimension in selected countries in Europe and Latin America. The authors discuss the provisions on religious freedom enshrined in the constitutions of Italy, Spain and Portugal, as well as Argentina, Chile and Colombia.The analysis leads to the conclusion that religious freedom is a human right protected both in the constitutions of European countries as well as in the constitutions of Latin American countries.The inclusion of the provisions on religious freedom in the individual dimension in the constitutions is due to certain similarities of the system of European and Latin American. Common features of both systems is that Europe and Latin America belong to the so-called Western civilization. The legal systems of Latin American countries formed primarily on the basis of Roman law.Although the wording of the provisions on religious freedom in the individual dimension in the constitutions of Latin American countries is similar to the editorial rules of the constitution states of Europe, in practice there are other ways to implement this freedom and guarantees its protection.

Trends and determinants of Yemen’s foreign policy between 1990 and 2014 The article discusses the evolution of Yemeni foreign policy from the unification of the two Yemeni states till the aftermath of the events related to the so-called Arab Spring of 2011. It underlines the determinants and implications of Yemeni foreign policy, particularly in the economic context, as well as the external interventionism, which eventually led to the destabilization. The text also elaborated the Polish direction in Yemeni foreign policy at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Evaluation of the attack on the Kunduz hospital in the light of international humanitarian law The article concentrates on the recent US attack on a hospital led by the international non-governmental organization Médecins Sans Frontières. The hospital was located in Kunduz in Afghanistan and the attack took place on October 2, 2015. Pigeonpea is one of the important legume crops with high protein content and nutritional traits. It has enormous potency for its widespread adoption by farming communities. It is affected by various kinds of biotic and abiotic stresses. In the context, of biotic stresses Sterility mosaic disease (SMD) is one of the severe diseases in pigeonpea which ultimately lead to the drastic yield loss. The virus belongs to the genus Emaravirus, family- Fimoviridae. SMD is associated with two diverse types of Emaravirus, Pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus1 (PPSMV-1) and Pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus 2 (PPSMV-2). It is transmitted by the mite (Aceria cajani), mainly environmental contributing to the feasibility for the mites for the inoculation of the virus. The SMD is mainly governed by two genes SV1 that includes the dominant allele and serves as an inhibitory action on the resistance of the SV2. Methods for identification of the virus include RT-PCR, DIBA and ELISA using alkaline phosphatase or penicillinase. To control SMV disease farmers generally adopted intercropping methods. There are few potential drugs have been identified for the administration of the disease such as 0.1% Fenazaquin, Dicofol, Imidacloripid, Carbosulfan; Spiromesifin includes the inhibition of the mite inoculation on the pigeonpea plant. The present review describes compressive and systematic insights on SMV protein targets and potential drugs that could be utilized as the presumed drug targets for the finding of true drugs against the SMD in pigeonpea.

Abstract Surface rupture from the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence, initially associated with the Mw 6.4 foreshock, occurred on 4 July on a ∼17 km long, northeast–southwest-oriented, left-lateral zone of faulting. Following the Mw 7.1 mainshock on 5 July (local time), extensive northwest–southeast-oriented, right-lateral faulting was then also mapped along a ∼50 km long zone of faults, including subparallel splays in several areas. The largest slip was observed in the epicentral area and crossing the dry lakebed of China Lake to the southeast. Surface fault rupture mapping by a large team, reported elsewhere, was used to guide the airborne data acquisition reported here. Rapid rupture mapping allowed for accurate and efficient flight line planning for the high-resolution light detection and ranging (lidar) and aerial photography. Flight line planning trade-offs were considered to allocate the medium (25 pulses per square meter [ppsm]) and high-resolution (80 ppsm) lidar data collection polygons. The National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping acquired the airborne imagery with a Titan multispectral lidar system and Digital Modular Aerial Camera (DiMAC) aerial digital camera, and U.S. Geological Survey acquired Global Positioning System ground control data. This effort required extensive coordination with the Navy as much of the airborne data acquisition occurred within their restricted airspace at the China Lake ranges.

The agent of sterility mosaic, a disease that is a major constraint on pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) production in the Indian subcontinent, is transmitted by the eriophyid mite, Aceria cajani. This agent has remained elusive for decades despite intensive efforts but we report the isolation of highly flexuous filamentous virus-like particles (VLPs) of 3 to 10 nm in width and of undefined lengths from sterility mosaic disease (SMD)-affected pigeonpea plants. Purified VLP preparations from virus-infected pigeonpea and Nicotiana benthamiana had a buoyant density in cesium chloride of 1.22 to 1.23 g cm-3 and contained a major virus-specific protein species of ≈32 kDa and 5 to 7 RNA species of ≈6.8 to 1.1 kb. The sequence of some complementary DNA clones to RNA from purified VLP preparations had no significant matches in database searches. Two oligonucleotide primers derived from one such sequence, when used in reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assays, amplified a product of 321 bp specifically from SMD-affected pigeonpea plants. Purified VLP preparations were used to produce polyclonal antibodies that, in infected plants, detected the virus using enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) and the virus-specific 32-kDa protein in western immunoblotting (WIB). In such assays, the virus was detected consistently in all SMD-affected pigeonpea plant samples from several different locations in India, but not in samples from symptom-free pigeonpea plants from the same locations. In experimental studies, all pigeonpea plants inoculated with viruliferous A. cajani and those plants graft-inoculated with SMD-affected tissue were infected with the virus as assessed by ELISA and WIB, but not any uninfected pigeonpea plants. This virus, tentatively named Pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV), has some properties similar to virus species in the genera Tospovirus and Tenuivirus and with the eriophyid mite-transmitted High plains virus (HPV) but is distinct from these and from all other characterized viruses. The combination of novel properties shown by PPSMV and HPV suggest that they may constitute species in a new genus of plant viruses.

Abstract China Energy’s National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) is developing a Power Plant Smart Management (PPSM) platform that employs digital-twin technology to undertake techno-economic modelling analysis on China Energy’s existing coal-fired power-plant units and explore cost-effective solutions to improve those plant units’ thermal efficiencies and operating performance. This paper presents a case study of PPSM on a 320-MWe coal-fired thermal power-plant unit, demonstrating how the digital-twin technology was employed to explore and analyse optimization solutions. Various optimization solutions and their cost-effectiveness were assessed using the digital-twin-modelling analysis; the results indicated the optimization solutions are expected to improve the plant unit’s operating efficiency and reduce its current electricity-generation coal consumption by up to 3.5 g/kWh standard coal equivalent (sce), worth annual fuel-cost savings of approximately 4 million RMB for a single unit or 8 million RMB for the two identical 320-MWe units that the power plant currently operates. The digital twin was also employed to assess the power-plant unit’s operating economics during both summer and winter. In summer, when the unit operates in electricity-generation-only mode, the unit’s operating thermal efficiency could drop by up to 6% points following the grid demand of load changes from 100% maximum continuous rating (MCR) down to 30%MCR, resulting in an ~ 45 RMB/MWh increase of electricity-generation cost. In winter, when the unit operates in combined heat and power (CHP) cogeneration mode, for the same boiler load, the CHP operation increases the plant unit’s operating profit with increasing district-heating duty, although the relative profit gain from the CHP cogeneration could start to decrease when the district-heating steam-extraction flow increases to a certain point that varies depending on the market prices of heat and electricity, while the fuel cost was found to be equivalent to ~50% of the unit’s total CHP income cogenerated from its electricity and district heat outputs.

The Dual Language Programme (DLP) is an initiative introduced by the Ministry of Education to advocate the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in the English language. Resembling the previous educational policy named PPSMI, this programme commenced in 2016, offering the flexibility for English to be used as the instructional medium for the two subjects. After four years of its inception, it is crucial to discover the programme's acceptance among those involved directly with the programme. Thus, this study expounds students’ understanding and acceptance of the programme by investigating the influence of age, gender, locality and the type of school on their understanding and acceptance of DLP. This study involved 2162 students, and it was found that their understanding and acceptance level of the programme are at a moderately high level. The findings also revealed a significant difference between the acceptance of the programme. As an alternative to solidify the English mastery, the implementation of DLP needs to be improved for it to be well-accepted by interest groups.

The green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO NP) has been investigated using the extract in absolute ethanolic and alcoholic solvents 96% from the peel of the mango fruit (Mangifera indica), thus evaluating the influence of the type of solvent on the extraction of reducing metabolites. A broad approach to characterization initially controlled by UV-vis spectrophotometry has been directed, the formation mechanism was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the magnetic properties by characterization by Physical Property Measurement System (PPSM), in addition to a large number of techniques such as X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (DRX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM/STEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and Z potential to confirm the formation of FeO NP. The results suggest better characteristics for FeO NP synthesized using 96% alcoholic solvent extract. The successful synthesis was directly proven in the removal of metals (Cr-VI, Cd, and Pb) as a potential alternative in the remediation of agricultural soils.

The green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles is presented as an excellent sustainable alternative for achieving nanostructures, with potential applications. This research provides important information regarding the influence of the type of solvent used in extracting organic reducing agents from E. globulus on the FeO NPs green synthesis protocol. A broad approach to characterization is presented, where UV-vis spectrophotometry suggests the presence of this type of nanoparticulate material. Likewise, the reduction mechanism was evaluated by FT-IR and the magnetic properties were evaluated by PPSM. In addition, characterizations were linked via elemental analysis (EDX), crystallographic characterization (XRD), electron microscopy (SEM/STEM), and Z potential to evaluate colloidal stability. The results show the influence of the type of solvent used for the extraction of organic reducing agents from E. globulus, and the effect on the synthesis of FeO NPs. In addition, the nanostructure material obtained showed excellent efficiency in the remediation of agricultural soil, eliminating metals such as Cr-VI, Cd, and, to a lesser extent, Pb.

The purpose of this essay is to elaborate on the theory and practice of the discursive analytical approach. In response to the epistemological and ontological challenges raised by the PPSJ 2002 forum on Orientalism and Philippine political studies, the discursive analytical approach aims to address power asymmetry in modern knowledge production, between the representing and represented. By examining the theories and practices of representation in positivism, interpretivism, structuralism and postmodernism, this essay argues for a post-Orientalist theory and practice which investigates claims of power/knowledge of state subjects. Drawing from selected fieldwork snapshots in the Cagayan Valley, a discursive analytical approach attempts to articulate the inarticulate as, in Gramsci’s term, intellectuals. It aims to encourage continuous dialogue between the representing and represented. By seeing every individual as an agent of social change, it aims to encourage collaborative engagement, which renders the future of the Philippine state open to change. By continuously engaging with the state subjects serendipitously, the researcher may also serve as a venue for diverse actors to address their concerns of the Philippine state.

<p>Now a day’s characterization of targets using radar is very important in Air Traffic Control, Defense, and Stealth etc. In order to know the characteristics of the target it is very essential to know the polarization properties of that particular target which depends upon scattering nature of the target. The polarization properties are important for radar target besides amplitude, phase and frequency. The polarization may be potentially used to improve target detection, anti-interference, and radar target recognition. Polarization properties of a target can be obtained using polarization scattering matrix (PSM). In this paper the polarization matrix of various geometrical shapes are derived. For radar target recognition (RTR), a method using properties of the polarization scattering matrix (PPSM) is presented in this paper. A dipole has been considered to calculate the polarization matrix and polarization properties. The properties of the polarization scattering matrix: the determinant, Trace of Power Scattering Matrix, Depolation, Eigen polarization angle and Module of Polarization Ellipticity are analyzed. These properties are analyzed for different orientation angles of the targets.</p>

This paper utilizes 27 Chinese industry sectors as study objects, and measures the decoupling effects of the industrial carbon emission transfer; furthermore, this paper proposes several optimizing strategies for an inter-industry carbon emission transfer structure toward the realization of dual goals, i.e., industrial economic development and industrial carbon emission reduction. The research result shows that: Different industries show different decoupling effects of carbon emission transfer, and the distribution of the six states of decoupling effects could all be observed. With respect to dynamic variations, the decoupling effects of industrial carbon emission transfer were optimal during the late stage, and the decoupling effects during 2010-2012 were the most optimal. With respect to the optimizing strategies for the inter-industry carbon emission transfer, efforts should be focused on increasing the carbon emission exports, while reducing the carbon emission imports of 11 industries (CMWI and others). Future efforts should be directed at increasing carbon emission imports and reducing carbon emission exports in the three industries of CLII, PPSM, and MPI, while increasing both carbon emission exports and imports in 10 industries (FMTP and others), and reducing both carbon emission imports and exports in the three industries of MMII, OMW, and WRT.

Abstract Porous graphite is employed for the development of air bearings used in the ultraprecision machine tools. The static performance of this new bearing type depends on the permeability and inertia coefficient of the porous graphite inserted in it. In this study, an experimental fitting method was used in conjunction with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to determine the permeability and inertia coefficient of three types of porous graphite with porosity of 16%, 13%, and 8% respectively. The experimental results show that the Compressible-Darcy-Forchheimer equation can fit the experimental mass flow rate and pressure drop well. The average permeability of SG-3, SG-5 and SG-8 porous graphite are 5.74 × 10 − 14 m2, 3.65 × 10 − 15 m2 and 1.85 × 10 − 15 m2 respectively. SG-5 and SG-8 porous graphite have good permeability consistency and can be used to make porous media air bearing. The PPSM (number of pores per square millimeter) of SG-3 and SG-8 are similar, but the permeabilities are very different. For low permeability porous graphite, samples with different sizes from the same material should be tested and the averaged inertia coefficient can be used. The accuracy of the pore-scale FVM (finite volume method) is highly dependent on the quality of the pore microstructure image.

Sterility mosaic (SMD) is the most damaging disease of pigeonpea endemic in the Indian subcontinent. It causes yield losses of >US$300 million per annum in India and Nepal alone. SMD-affected plants show severe stunting and mosaic symptoms on leaves, with complete or partial cessation of flowering. The SMD causal agent is spread by the arthropod mite vector Aceria cajani (Acari: Eriophyidae). Cultivating SMD-resistant genotypes is the most viable way to manage this serious disease of pigeonpea. Progress in developing broad-based SMD resistant material has been hindered by the lack of knowledge of the causal agent, the absence of diagnostic tools, and factors influencing host-plant resistance. After seven decades of research, vital breakthroughs made on the identification, detection, transmission, and epidemiology of the SMD causal agent, Pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV), are enabling the development of broad-based durable resistant pigeonpea cultivars. These breakthroughs will contribute greatly to sustainable pigeonpea production and enhance the income and livelihood of poor farmers in the semi-arid tropics of the Indian subcontinent.

Objective - The implementation of Dual-Language Programmes (DLP) in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics is an initiative under the ‘Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening the English Language’ (MBMMBI) policy. Though it has some similarities with the previous policy known as ‘English for the Teaching of Science and Mathematics’ (PPSMI), its execution is idiosyncratic in its own way. Since its inception in 2016, the programme has entered its third cycle involving students in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. The curiosity to scrutinise the programme implementation has led to this study. The study aims to investigate the execution of this programme and to assess its sustainability. Methodology/Technique – Gleaning through the students’ language capabilities, attitudes, teachers’ support and acceptance of the programme, the study uses a questionnaire with open-ended questions and focus group discussions to unravel the aforementioned issues. 1,530 students from secondary schools across Malaysia were selected as the respondents of this study. Findings - The results reveal findings that may represent a measure on the direction of this programme. Looking from the student perspective, the challenges confronted in addition to those put forward may further serve as an indicator for the sustainability of the program. Novelty – This study infers how the programme can be further enhanced in terms of its implementation in its fourth year since inception. The findings of this study may assist policy makers in shaping the direction of the programme. Type of Paper: Empirical. Background: Fixed dose combination (FDC’s) of α1-blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors have commonly been used in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This study compared the effect of FDC’s of tamsulosin, alfuzosin and silodosin with dutasteride on quality of life (QoL) in patients of LUTS with BPH.Methods: Ninety-six male patients aged ≥45 years diagnosed with LUTS and BPH were randomized to receive FDC’s of dutasteride with tamsulosin (group 1), alfuzosin (group 2) and silodosin (group 3) over a period of 16 weeks. Quality of life was assessed using International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) 8th question, BPH impact index (BII) and modified Patient Perception of Study Medication (PPSM) questionnaire.Results: IPSS 8th question score improved significantly by 61.68%, 57.63% and 63.4% in group 1, 2 and 3 respectively. BPH Impact Index score also improved significantly by 62.95%, 60.13% and 61.82% in group 1, 2 and 3 respectively. All the three treatments were found to be similar in improving the QoL. Majority of patients were satisfied with their treatment and wanted to receive the medication again while a small number of patients were neutral with the study medication. None of the subjects was dissatisfied with any of the treatment.Conclusions: All the FDC’s improved QoL and were found to be satisfactory as per patient perception of study medications.

ABSTRACTWater deprivation can be a major stressor to microbial life in surface and subsurface soil. In unsaturated soils, the matric potential (Ψm) is often the main component of the water potential, which measures the thermodynamic availability of water. A low matric potential usually translates into water forming thin liquid films in the soil pores. Little is known of how bacteria respond to such conditions, where, in addition to facing water deprivation that might impair their metabolism, they have to adapt their dispersal strategy as swimming motility may be compromised. Using the pressurized porous surface model (PPSM), which allows creation of thin liquid films by controlling Ψm, we examined the transcriptome dynamics ofPseudomonas putidaKT2440. We identified the differentially expressed genes in cells exposed to a mild matric stress (−0.4 MPa) for 4, 24, or 72 h. The major response was detected at 4 h before gradually disappearing. Upregulation of alginate genes was notable in this early response. Flagellar genes were not downregulated, and the microarray data even suggested increasing expression as the stress prolonged. Moreover, we tested the effect of polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG 8000), a nonpermeating solute often used to simulate Ψm, on the gene expression profile and detected a different profile than that observed by directly imposing Ψm. This study is the first transcriptome profiling of KT2440 under directly controlled Ψmand also the first to show the difference in gene expression profiles between a PEG 8000-simulated and a directly controlled Ψm.
