AbstractThe care and handling of library and archival materials has become a much - discussed topic in recent years. Considerable time, effort, and money are being invested by many libraries and archives in protective housing, rebinding, conservation, and preservation microfilming programs. Therefore it makes good fiscal sense to delay the need for these costly activities by making an effort to preserve library materials in good condition for as long as possible.

Slavic collections, for example, appear to be in dire need of preservation treatment, but there is very little hard data on the scope of the problem. Last copies are a class of unique library materials that are at risk and warrant consideration for long-term preservation. WorldCat, the OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. bibliographic database, contains 24 million records for items held by only a single OCLC member library.
