The main idea of the invention is an expert system to execute a specific recipe through a food container and a moving and tilting pot with gases and visible cooking analysis. Details used to achieve professional results are: food preprocessing and weighted, normal warehouse, fridge, and deep fridge, overall positioning, computer control, monitoring the cooking gases and light spectrum and trainability. The machinery line has been designed for the semi-professional market but it has capabilities for catering, military operation, gourmet cooking and serving. The modular design permits an entry system with a few food containers, two pots, an oven and the base software running on a single PC while the advanced option uses thousands of food boxes, tenths of pots, pans, ovens and high expert systems intelligence running on real time industrial computers. All these give unlimited futuristic capabilities covering the 10-year time for Return on Investment. The cooking on this machine is a statistical Big Data cooking with Data Science principles.

Résumé :

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the sterilization process of critical items used in commercial establishments that offer the services of manicures and pedicure to the public.METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 90 employees exercising the function of manicure and pedicure in commercial establishments. The research instrument was a questionnaire with open and closed questions about the knowledge and procedures related to disinfection and sterilization of instruments.RESULTS: The mean age was 33.8 years, 72 % had taken vocational courses and had professional experience of more than five years. The use of hot air oven was prevalent in 84.3 % of establishments and 65.7 % reported opening the oven during sterilization. The relation between the higher cost of the service and the use of autoclave was statistically significant (p < 0.001).CONCLUSION: The sterilization process of the instruments used in the studied commercial establishments that offer services of manicures and pedicure to the public have significant deficiencies related to cleaning and sterilization of instruments.

Résumé :

Lots of hydraulic valves lose efficacy every year because of the complex mechanism of construction machinery, bad working conditions and changeable objects. These invalid hydraulic valves were melted down in the oven and then reused. However, the additional value of valves is wasted, and it will consume a lot of resources. The remanufacturing industry, which is becoming more and more mature, can solve this problem. The hydraulic valve can be remanufactured by recollection and using professional technology. Here is an introduction of failure modes and remanufacturing process of hydraulic valve, and also a deep analysis to the benefits of economy, resources and environment. It turned out that remanufacturing can restore the function of the invalid hydraulic valve and shorten the production cycle. It also can save costs by 55%, save resources by 85% and save material by 90%.

Op 18 november 2005. promoveerde Hans Verkruijsse aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Zijn dissertatie heeft betrekking op de oordeelsvorming over interne beheersing door in de praktijk werkzame openbare accountants. Uit het door hem ingestelde onderzoek trekt hij de conclusie, dat “niet aantoonbaar (kon) worden gemaakt dat sprake is van consensus tussen de oordelen van accountants”. Dit lijkt een vernietigend oordeel over de wijze waarop accountants omgaan met Administratieve Organisatie en Interne Beheersing. Verkruijsse spreekt dan ook over “judgment van een professional” in plaats van “professional judgment”. In dit artikel gaat Fred de Koning na of het werkelijk zo erg is en welke consequenties aan het onderzoek moeten worden verbonden.

Background The popularity of web-based patient-professional communication over patient portals is constantly increasing. Good patient-professional communication is a prerequisite for high-quality care and patient centeredness. Understanding health care professionals’ experiences of web-based patient-professional communication is important as they play a key role in engaging patients to use portals. More information is needed on how patient-professional communication could be supported by patient portals in health care. Objective This systematic review of qualitative studies aims to identify how health care professionals experience web-based patient-professional communication over the patient portals. Methods Abstract and full-text reviews were conducted by 2 reviewers independently. A total of 4 databases were used for the study: CINAHL (EBSCO), ProQuest (ABI/INFORM), Scopus, and PubMed. The inclusion criteria for the reviewed studies were as follows: the examination of health care professionals’ experiences, reciprocal communication between patients and health care professionals, peer-reviewed scientific articles, and studies published between 2010 and 2019. The Joanna Briggs Institute’s quality assessment criteria were used in the review process. A total of 13 included studies were analyzed using a thematic synthesis, which was conducted by 3 reviewers. Results A total of 6 analytical themes concerning health care professionals’ experiences of web-based patient-professional communication were identified. The themes were related to health care professionals’ work, change in communication over patient portals, patients’ use of patient portals, the suitability of patient portals for communication, the convenience of patient portals for communication, and change in roles. Conclusions Health care professionals’ experiences contain both positive and negative insights into web-based patient-professional communication over patient portals. Most commonly, the positive experiences seem to be related to the patients and patient outcomes, such as having better patient engagement. Health care professionals also have negative experiences, for example, web-based patient-professional communication sometimes has deficiencies and has a negative impact on their workload. These negative experiences may be explained by the poor functionality of the patient portals and insufficient training and resources. To reduce health care professionals’ negative experiences of web-based patient-professional communication, their experiences should be taken into account by policy makers, health care organizations, and information technology enterprises when developing patient portals. In addition, more training regarding web-based patient-professional communication and patient portals should be provided to health care professionals.

Abstract Phyllanthus niruri L. drying kinetics were empirically examined at the temperature of 40 °C, 45 °C, 50 °C, 55 °C, and 60 °C in an air-drying oven. The herbs’ aerial components (stems, leaves, and flowers) were picked after 9-10 weeks of planting. The drying procedure ended when the sample weights remained unchanged. The drying time varied from 7 to 20.5 hours. CurveExpert Professional was utilized to establish the optimal modeling fit. According to the statistical analysis, notably for the root mean square error (RMSE), determination coefficient (R2 ), and residual chi-square (χ2 ), Midilli-Kucuk has deemed the optimal function for characterizing the kinetics of P. niruri drying. The effective diffusivity and drying activation energy of P. niruri were reported to be 4.050x10-9 m2/s – 1.620x10-8 m2/s and 55.23 kJ/mol, respectively. UV-VIS spectrophotometry was also employed to analyze the effects of the temperature on flavonoid content. The measurement showed that the flavonoid content from all dried herbs varied from 1.18-1.69 %, which already meets the Farmakope Herbal Indonesia’s standard. The highest flavonoid content was found at the lowest drying temperature.

In this article, we consider the mechanisms necessary to distill new skill sets from the profession's core competencies along three out of four dimensions that define practice for information professionals in general and librarians in particular. We explore the emerging information universe and the environmental factors shaping it in order to cast light on the emerging professional contlicts over appropriate niches in the new universe of information work. Abbott's processes of reduction and abstraction as mechanism for the expansion of redefinition of a profession's domain are examined along three practice dimensions: (1) the tool making dimension, (2) the information management (tool use) dimension, and (3) the agency (service) dimension.

Aim: This study aimed to compare ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), phytic acid, and citric acid as chelation agents in final irrigation procedures on teeth with apical impermeability. Methodology: We used 66 mandibular premolar teeth with a single root and single canal extracted for periodontal or orthodontic reasons. All teeth crowns were removed to achieve a 14-mm root length. Mechanical preparation of the root canal was completed with a Reciproc R25 (VDW, Munich, Germany) file system. Teeth were randomly separated into three groups: Group 1: 5 ml 17% EDTA, Group 2: 5 ml 1% phytic acid, and Group 3: 5 ml 20% citric acid. We used 6 ml 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in the mechanical preparation of all groups. Three teeth were selected for both the positive and negative control groups. All teeth in the experimental groups were filled by the lateral condensation method using AH Plus canal sealer and gutta-percha. For hardening of the canal sealer, samples were kept at 37 oC and at 100% humidity in a drying oven for 7 days. Later, following removal from the drying oven, two layers of nail polish were used to cover all but the apical 2 mm of each tooth. The teeth were then kept in 2% methylene blue solution at 37 oC for 7 days. The root was divided by cutting in the buccolingual direction and gutta-percha was removed. The dye leakage was measured linearly in millimeters (mm) under a stereomicroscope. Results: As a result of the apical leakage assessment, the lowest apical leakage is observed in the phytic acid group. There was a statistically significant difference between the phytic acid group and citric acid group. There was no statistically significant difference between other groups. Résumé :

Although the benefits of exercise are well documented, the risk of injury as a result of exercise is also documented. The undertaking of exercise in the form of sport or dance carries a risk of injury. This risk is increased in the professional ranks where increased intensity of exercise coupled with greater exposure periods are noted. Two published systematic reviews of the literature pertaining to musculoskeletal injuries and pain in dancers (up to 2008) indicated that there are still major scientific limitations and biases in the literature reviewed and indicated the need for explicit criteria on injury definition and methods of injury reporting. The reviews did comment on the evidence that musculoskeletal injury is an important issue for all dancers and that there is preliminary evidence that comprehensive injury prevention and management strategies may reduce injuries. The purpose of this single cohort observational study was to document injury incidence and severity in professional ballet dancers over three years including any changes as a result of changes within their medical management. While it is recognised that a randomised control trial would be advocated for an interventional study, due to the demands of this high performance environment this was not feasible. As such, steps were taken to improve the reporting of findings through the utilisation of the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Statement. To date there are two publications in peer reviewed journals as a result of the data collected in this study. In the absence of international consensus on injury data collection in dance the methodology employed in this study was consistent with the International Consensus Statements on injury data collection from sport. Although the incidence of injuries in Year 1 was lower than that in other sports, the results were higher than other studies that have been reported in dance. The reason for this may be due to the use of a more encompassing injury definition. In response to the data and details obtained through the injury audit process changes in the comprehensive medical management of the dancers were implemented. The pre-participation screening was extended and the individual conditioning programmes were structured using the developed Hybrid Intervention Model. The result of the injury auditing indicated a significant reduction in injury incidence in the Year 2, with a further reduction in Year 3. These findings support the results of the systematic reviews in that there is growing evidence that comprehensive injury prevention and management strategies may reduce injuries in dance and that in the absence of stronger evidence there is a strong recommendation for those charged with caring for professional dancers to implement comprehensive medical management programmes.

Control over nursing practice (CONP) is a participatory process through which nurses have input and engage in decision making about the context of practice and unit operations related to nursing practice. CONP has been associated with a number of positive outcomes related to nurse satisfaction, nurse status, effectiveness of patient care, and quality of patient outcomes. However, no comprehensive model has been created nor comprehensive analysis been conducted related to approaches for increasing CONP. This study tested a hypothesized model of antecedents to CONP developed from a review of the literature in nursing, psychology, and organizational management using a complexity theory perspective.The study used a nonexperimental, comparative design. The sample for data analysis consisted of 28 nurse managers and 583 staff nurses from 32 units in 10 hospitals. Existing instruments were used in a paper and pencil format to collect demographic and perceptual data on CONP and the hypothesized antecedent variables. Data were aggregated to provide an analysis of organizational and unit level contextual and variable effects related to CONP.Contextual regression indicated a greater influence of unit-level variables than organizational-level variables on nurses' perceptions of CONP. Regression analyses and revised model testing demonstrated that nurse manager supportiveness, implementation of a formal structure for CONP, and information flow consisting of open and accurate communication were positively related to CONP. Hierarchy of authority was negatively related to CONP. The relationship between CONP and job codification and autonomy varied based upon the measurement of the dependent variable. Manager's perception that participative decision making enhances organizational effectiveness; manager's perception that participative decision making does not reduce their power; nurses' experience, expertise, and educational preparation; and nurses' desire for control did not significantly relate to CONP as hypothesized.This study contributes to nursing research and clarifies strategies for improving the work environment for nurses by delineating antecedents to CONP in the acute care hospital setting. These data will be useful to nurses, nurse managers, and hospital administrators who want to improve patient safety, reduce patient mortality, increase nurse satisfaction, and increase nurse retention.

This research study was conducted to derive a theory developed on the empirical basis of teacher input through the lens of the methodology of grounded theory. Its goal was to identify the underlying issues and problems associated with classroom teachers; input into local curriculum as well as the barriers to changing the prevailing thought of classroom teachers on curriculum. Classroom teachers from two separate academic subject matters that are currently being taught at the middle school level were interviewed and their responses were coded using the classical grounded theory methodology and processes.

The resulting research shows that the involvement of classroom teachers is considered a benefit to the local curriculum development, regardless of experience in the classroom or length of service as a teacher. While most teachers feel that their input is paramount to learning in their particular classroom, teachers admit that they lack the skills to effectively create curriculum for implementation. It is in this manner that teachers strive to do what is best for their students; however, in some cases they lack the support and direction from the district, state or federal level. Knowing the issue as it appears to the classroom teacher, the creation, implementation and execution of locally created curriculum would be and is met with great resistance due to the adherence to the prevailing thoughts on curriculum development at the state of federal level and the need to comply with and execute the curriculum within the existing frameworks.

Further studies in looking at the existence of and use of locally teacher created and implemented curriculum, in different state or regional areas, would contribute to a better and clearer understanding of the particular issues that surround and deal with teacher involvement in the classroom curriculum decision making process. It is believed that the use of the grounded theory model as a methodological research tool provides a pathway for all interested parties to be open and candid about the issue and provide a better introspective look at the issues at hand.

With the ever-changing requirements of a secondary level of education and the application of standardized testing criteria to determine proficiency in mastery of the subject matter, the attempt to create a standard and acceptable curriculum for all school sites has left the control of the schools. Now classrooms are scrambling for focus, guidance and support with curriculum development and implementation. Over the last three decades, there have been numerous research studies that have examined the place of the classroom teacher in the process of creating curriculum for their classroom with mixed results. The efforts to reform secondary education, from the federal level to the local level, have shut out the local input from teachers and professionals in their particular fields as to what the curriculum in the classroom should be and left that decision to people outside the classroom environment. âThe Government of one country by another inevitably leaves its mark on both ruler and ruled.1 The 1947 partition which accompanied the independence of India and Pakistan was a colonial tragedy which as yet has not been fully explored. The extent of the violence which accompanied the division of Bengal and Punjab has invited recourse to explanations which emphasise its exceptionalism. This thesis uses a case study of British Indian Civil Service (I.C.S.) officers in 1930s and 40s Punjab to challenge this representation, and suggest how the mentality of late colonial rule accepted violence as a fundamental aspect of Indian nature. The sources used are memoirs, recounting brief colonial careers after several decades of subsequent work back at 'home' in Britain or elsewhere in Britain's declining empire. These experiences shape a collective memory of colonial Punjab which is transmitted as a remarkably cohesive narrative form. The unity of message gives important insights into the mind-set of the I.C.S. at district level, and its surviving esprit de corps beyond the colonial environment. Collective memory alongside fictional representations have disseminated an image of the I.C.S. which emphasises its power and prestige; this thesis challenges the extent of that authority to suggest how reliance upon local networks of control facilitated continuity in styles of local governance in Punjab post-1947. The memoirs in this thesis have attracted previous attention in nostalgic histories of the Raj and its lifestyles. Whilst this has led to them being overlooked by historians in the past, this thesis argues that the use of these accounts in popular representations of empire in Britain has made them vital to understanding the idealised, romantic imagery of empire which still survives today.

It is well known that the evolution of 4G-based mobile multimedia network systems will contribute significantly to future m-health applications that require high bandwidth and fast data rates. Central to the success of such emerging applications is the compatibility of broadband networks such as mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) and RSVP A, and especially their rate adaption issues combined with the acceptable real time medical quality of service requirements. The design of effective broadband mobile healthcare systems usmg emerging WiMAX and RSxP A networks is important from the medical perspective especially in applications such as remote medical ultrasound diagnostic systems. In this thesis, we introduce a new cross layer design approach for medical video streaming over mobile WiMAX and RSVP A networks. In particular, we propose an approach based on optimising medical Quality of Service (m-QoS) in mobile WiMAX network environments described in this work. Preliminary performance analysis of the proposed cross layer algorithm has been evaluated via simulation studies. These results show that the proposed cross layer optimizer achieves improved performance compatible with the necessary medical QoS requirements and constraints for the relevant clinical application. Furthermore, this work addresses the relevant challenges of cross layer design requirements for real time rate adaptation of ultrasound video streaming in Mobile WiMAX and RSVP A networks. The comparative performance analysis of such approach is validated in two experimental m-health testbed systems for both Mobile WiMAX and RSVP A networks. The experimental results show an improved performance of Mobile WiMAX compared to the RSVP A using the same cross layer optimisation approach. Additionally, we map the medical QoS to typical WiMAX QoS parameters in order to optimise the performance of these parameters in typical m-health scenarios. Preliminary performance analysis of the proposed multiparametric scenarios is evaluated to provide essential information for future medical QoS requirements and constraints.

Cette recherche a été développée sur le terrain dans une école spécialisée pour les élèves diagnostiqués du syndrome autistique : A Better Chance School, en Californie. Ces travaux s’appuient sur les fondements théoriques des concepts d’intelligence Emotionnelle, et de Capital Emotionnel©. Ces travaux portent sur les différences possibles de compétences entre les personnels éducatifs travaillant auprès d’élèves autistes qui perdurent et ceux qui quittent après quelques mois. Les résultats de l’analyse quantitative de données basées sur les tests d’intelligence émotionnelle à partir des batteries de test EQ Map® permettent de comparer les niveaux de compétences émotionnelles entre le personnel pérenne et le personnel non pérenne à l’ABC School. Les tests statistiques t-test pratiqués à partir du programme stata® démontrent une différence significative des scores d’intelligence émotionnelle et révèlent des scores supérieurs pour les éducateurs et enseignants pérennes par comparaison aux enseignants et éducateurs non pérennes. Le post test intra-groupe, effectué plusieurs mois plus tard sur la population d’éducateurs pérennes, à permis de montrer une différence significative pour une grande majorité des catégories d’échelles d’intelligence émotionnelle. Précisément, les catégories pour lesquelles il y a eu un développement significatif au cours des 18 mois d’expérience à ABC School sont les suivantes : Faculté de force émotionnelle mentale personnelle, créativité, compassion, résilience, connexion interpersonnelle, intégration de soi, compréhension émotionnelle d’autrui, quotient relationnel
This research was developed from the particular field work of a specialized school for students with autism at A Better Chance School in California. This Research was conducted through the framework of Emotional Intelligence Theories and the Emotional Capital© concept. This research targets the possible differences in emotional capital between sustainable educators and non sustainable educators working with students with autism. The results from quantitative data analysis based on the emotional Intelligence test EQ Map® allow to compare the level of emotional competencies between sustainable and non sustainable employees at ABC School. The statistical t-test performed with the program Stata® shows a significant difference and higher EQ scores for sustainable educators compared to non sustainable educators. The post test performed 18 months later on sustainable educators revealed a significant difference for a majority of scales on emotional intelligence. Precisely, the categories where the increase was significant after 18 months working at ABC school are the following ones : Mental and emotional personal strength abilities, creativity, compassion, resilience, connection interpersonal connection, integrated self, emotional awareness of others, relational quotient

AbstractOutline: Based on the Three-multiple problem of literature on strategy definition, this chapter analyses literature on strategy definition based on a special research approach developed by the author. The reasons for the aforesaid Three-multiple problem are examined with a sample over 30 definitions. It is found that there are mainly four reasons contributing to the Three-multiple problem. (1) different wordings are used to express the same meaning; (2) a variety of wordings are used to illustrate the content of different sub-classes that are under the same category; (3) different understandings of the strategy concept cause the use of various wordings; (4) extensions of concept are included in literature on strategy definition.

Comparing the percentage of the total population aged 65 and over in 2021, Japan (29.1%) is the world's highest super-aged society. It has been predicted for some time that the existing healthcare system would not be able to cope with the increasing demand for healthcare. One of the government's proposals to restructure the healthcare system is to make greater use of team medicine.The purpose of this paper is to clarify what has changed through team medicine mediated by information tools. The study site was a medium-sized hospital in a regional city in Japan. The research method used was ethnography with a focus on participant observation. The study period was eight years, from 2012 to 2020. One of the authors conducted the investigation while working at the hospital as a hospital staff. In the 2012 revision of medical fees, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) added the new item of "guidance and management for prevention of dialysis (through team medicine)" to prevent serious complications in diabetic patients.The new reimbursement system only set out the conditions for calculation and left the operation of the system to the hospitals themselves. Hospitals were initially confused, and medical professionals did not know what to do. However, the introduction of the MAP information tool, which visualizes and lists the patients' treatment status, has made it possible for the health professionals to work proactively. Through the mediation of MAP, inadequate treatment of patients (e.g., lack of necessary tests, inadequate selection of appropriate drugs, etc.) became clear. Under such circumstances, not only nurses and pharmacists but also medical secretaries have been transformed into people who are relied upon by doctors. Such a change was born from their attitude that they did not accept team medicine, which was mainly based on hierarchy and division of labor among medical professionals, and that they were willing to take on the work of other professions. In other words, each specialized profession filled in the gaps in patient care that tended to arise by overlapping their respective duties. In addition, the relationship between doctors and other professionals has changed from a hierarchical relationship to a mutual relationship in which problems are raised.In conclusion, it was found that the mediation of information tools and the overlapping of work with other professions with one's own professional area did not reduce the organizational capacity of the team and promoted positive changes in professional relationships.

The skills regarding the building profession have undergone various changes during the evolution in the building industry over the past century. Due to the advancements in the building sector, the inherent disciplines have developed a defined set of skills. This study explores the relevant skills in the building industry, comparing the current skills to the evolving skills to ensure the continued relevance of professionals in the futuristic building industry. In order to fulfil the aim of the study, a descriptive methodology was utilised through a quantitative approach. Data for the research was gathered through a survey of building industry firms in South Africa. The findings of this study highlight the current skills and the evolving skills in the building industry. Interlinkages are also explored between the current and evolving skills. It is pertinent to note that the multi-disciplinary nature of the building industry requires professionals to be equipped with valuable skills applicable and relevant in the professional world. In conclusion, It is pertinent to note that current, evolving, and future skills may transform from time to time. This makes it highly important for building professionals to update their skills from time to time in order to remain relevant in the digitally transformed 21st-century futuristic building industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced (or quickened the advent of) online short course statistics training for non-statistical professionals. Participants in traditional statistics programs generally form a cohort who progress together over some protracted timescale, forging support networks and friendship groups, some of which will be maintained throughout professional careers. By contrast, short courses for professional purposes are often standalone and half a day to one week in duration. Participant focus lies with obtaining skills for usage within the foreseeable future, such that creating social networks with other participants is of little or no importance. We present our experiences with two years of online, examination-free, short course statistics training for the period from March 2020 to 2022.

Despite the practical classes in laboratories and simulations, the traditional automation engineering teaching and learning process remains with little adherence to the reality professional. In this context, this research proposes a hybrid teaching and learning approach for subjects on software development of automation systems based on problems with virtual reality features and gamification strategies. Its main objective is to enhance the alignment between theory and practice, playfully and engagingly mirrored in the industry's need. The proposed approach was developed based on Design Science Research and evaluated in seven classes of an undergraduate subject from the perspective of students and industrial professionals. The results evidence the evolution of the approach over the time and the ability to promote the connection between theory and professional practice.

Abstract This paper looks at the Professional Development of a Production and Facilities (P&F) Generalist ("a Jack-of-All-Trades"). It discusses the criticality of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and how to take advantage of the SPE Volunteer Opportunities and Programs (Training Services, Competency Development Matrices, and the Competency Management Tool (CMT)). Most professionals in the SPE Production & Facilities Community graduate with variety of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degrees and many pick up applied Petroleum Engineering and Project Management knowledge on the job. The SPE Competency Matrices provide a framework for developing: A minimum Breadth of Knowledge either as an undergraduate or during the first year of employment in the Exploration & Production (E&P) Sector of the Energy Business. A minimum Depth of Knowledge, acquired over the first 4-5 years or so, in General Engineering and their chosen (or assigned) Technical Function, in this case, either Production & Operations (P&O) or Projects, Facilities & Construction (P, F & C). The mid-career period is often a time of significant turbulence and confusion with many generalists testing-out or being assigned to a variety of roles, such as Subject Matter Experts, Team Leads, Supervisors, and Project Managers, or with other functions and/or new companies before settling on a longer-term career path. Traditional paths for knowledge development are further complicated by an increased focus on Data Science & Engineering Analysis (DSEA), Sustainability, Decarbonization, and the Energy Transition, along with a need to reinforce our Social License to Operate. The largest corporations and major training organizations, including the SPE, provide Competency Management Tools to help practitioners identify proficiency gaps and training requirements for a current or anticipated future assignments. Similarly, the SPE provides ongoing support not only with Business Management Leadership (Soft Skills) Training but also through the Technical Communities and Sections. In the final analysis, most P&F Generalists are "value-creation professionals" who just happen to work in the Upstream Oil & Gas Industry and have working knowledge of the acronyms and terminologies typically used in our profession.

Teams of Mechanical Engineering students at Western Kentucky University (WKU) participate in the ASME Student Design Contest (SDC) as a component of a Junior Design course. The required course activities include a design review, a mock contest at WKU, and project documentation. Students are also given the option of attending the Regional Conference SDC. Over the past two years, every team has participated at the Regional SDC, with 19 of 27 students attending. Both the 2004 and 2005 WKU teams won the regional competition. The Junior Design course uses the SDC as an intermediate component of a Professional Plan developed and implemented by the WKU ME faculty to assure that program graduates have experienced key areas of the engineering profession and demonstrated the ability to perform in a professional manner. The Professional Component consists of Engineering Design, Professional Communications, Professional Tools, and Ethics. Students receive instruction and practice in all four areas at least once per academic year. With the Engineering Design sequence, freshmen individually build an artifact, sophomores function in design teams, and juniors extend the design experience to an external audience. Technical rigor and faculty expectations obviously rise at each level. The goal is for seniors to be prepared to implement an industry-based project subject to realistic constraints and customer needs. As one of the two design projects in the Junior Design course, the SDC provides a structured design experience with an external flavor. Student teams must demonstrate both problem solving under constraints as well as creativity. To reinforce the economic aspects of design, teams are given a budget, and must fund over expenditures themselves. In addition to the design component of the SDC, the project also includes Professional Communications in the form of design reviews and design notebooks, and Professional Tools such as software for communication, CAD and analytical calculations. The 2005 class has been effective producing rapid prototype components of their designs from CAD models. The Junior Design implementation of the SDC has evolved over the past three years guided by ongoing assessment of both the course and the Professional Component program outcomes. The milestones and associated requirements in the ASME SDC project provides a definitive set of deliverables throughout the progression of the semester long experience. Individual and team performance can be monitored and evaluated with timely feedback, and course outcomes map well into program level assessment. This is a strength of the Professional Component framework that allows for building upon previous coursework, assessing student progress, and adjusting course coverage based on prior assessments to assure that graduating ME students are capable of practicing as engineers.

Summary: This article deals with the harm to the health of workers in harmful and hazardous working conditions, which is significant and requires the immediate implementation of measures aimed at reducing the occupational risk (PR). The categorization of the PR is carried out preliminary according to the classes of working conditions during the certification of workplaces, and finally - according to the health indicators of workers. The aim of the work was to develop criteria for professional selection and professional suitability in terms of health parameters for smelters of a metallurgical enterprise with the calculation of "safe experience". Researchers have developed a new approach to a comprehensive assessment of real workloads on the health of workers - an algorithm for highlighting the final selection and aptitude of the «safe work experience» in the profession of a smelter. As a methodological basis for substantiating the «safe experience», the methodology of risk metrics was used: the dependence of the relative indicators of cases of diseases with TD were expressed by a quadratic function of the average length of service in the profession. Working conditions at the workplace of smelters at BMZ are determined by the impact of a complex of harmful production factors (class 3.1 and 3.2). The «health index» of the IZ smelters was 32.33 ± 1.33%, i.e. above the average. The dynamics of a wave-like rise and a decrease in the number of cases of diseases among smelters over the course of their service is observed. In comparison with the 1-3 year experience group, there is a probability of occurrence of RR cases of VUT, which, relative to the level in the 1-3 year experience group, gradually decreases, but in periods with 13-15 years of experience, 19-21 years has peaks of increase in the probability ZVUT up to 0.77 and up to 0.7. According to the developed algorithm, the analysis of the general morbidity in smelters was carried out and the «safe experience» was calculated as the basis for professional selection and professional suitability for medical reasons.

Despite government efforts to reform teacher professional development (TPD) in the past four decades, Indonesian teacher quality remains low. Why have the improvement efforts failed? In the present study we investigate what caused these reforms to fail from two angles. First, we examine the efficacy of the latest teacher professional development (TPD) initiative in Indonesia, Pengembangan Keprofesian Berkelanjutan or PKB (Continuing Professional Development), and identify the factors affecting its efficacy. We found that some essential features of effective TPD are missing in PKB. The PKB programme has not targeted teachers based on years of experience, has not followed up teachers with post-training activities, has not incorporated teaching practice through lesson enactment, and has not built upon teacher existing practice. Second, our analysis demonstrates that PKB's weaknesses have existed in Indonesia's previous TPD initiatives as far back as four decades ago. This indicates that the long-term problem of TPD’s ineffectiveness is driven by different elements of the education system beyond the TPD’s technical and operational aspects. Our system-level analysis points out that merely improving the technical aspects of TPD would be insufficient given the Indonesian education system’s lack of coherence surrounding teacher quality. The problems surrounding the provision of effective TPD is more complex than simply a matter of replacing the “old” with the “new” initiative. The change requires a reorientation of the education system to produce high-quality teachers.

The UFERN Framework Professional Learning Community project was funded as a supplement to the existing NSF-funded Undergraduate Field Experiences Research Network (UFERN), which sought to build a vibrant, supportive, and sustainable collaborative network that fostered effective undergraduate field experiences. The goals of the UFERN Framework Professional Learning Community (PLC) supplement were: • To support a small group of field educators in intentional design, implementation and assessment of student-centered undergraduate field experiences in a range of field learning contexts; • To develop effective strategies for supporting undergraduate field educators in using the UFERN Framework as an aid for designing, implementing, and assessing student-centered undergraduate field experience programs; • To assemble vignettes featuring applications of the UFERN Framework in a range of program contexts; and • To expand the community of field educators interested in designing, implementing, and assessing student-centered undergraduate field learning experiences. Sixteen educators participated in the PLC, which targeted participants who taught and facilitated a range of undergraduate field experiences (UFEs) that varied in terms of setting, timing, focus and student population. Due to the COVID pandemic, the originally-planned three-month intensive training took place over nine months (January to October 2021). It consisted of seven video conference sessions (via Zoom) with presentations and homework assignments. It included independent work, as well as guided group discussions with project leaders and other participants, which were supported by online collaborative tools.

As K12 computer science education is expanding nationwide, school districts are challenged to find qualified computer science teachers. It will take many years for schools of education to produce a sufficient number of certified computer science teachers to meet the demand. In the interim courses like Exploring Computer Science (ECS) can fill the gap. ECS is designed to provide a robust introduction to computer science and the accompanying professional development is structured such that a college level understanding of computer science is not required. This brief summarizes research with 20,000 Chicago Public Schools high school students and their teachers to test the claim that the ECS professional development can provide an adequate preparation for teaching ECS. The results provide strong evidence that full completion of the ECS professional development program by teachers from any discipline leads to much higher student outcomes, independent of whether a teacher is certified in computer science.

The early years of a teacher’s career are crucial to the formation of their professional identity—a complex process of reconciling their personal attributes with the demands of the profession. This study explores the identity formation of novice teachers in Indonesia and seeks to identify the various aspects that shape this process. Specifically, we examine how Indonesia’s current teacher policy landscape affects novice teachers’ perspectives on teaching and their profession. Through a longitudinal bimonthly diary study conducted over two years, we find that the novice teachers’ stories about their identity development revolve around five themes: initial motivation to enter the profession, beliefs about teaching and the teaching profession, satisfaction with working conditions, perceptions about major challenges during the early years, and commitment to the teaching profession and career aspiration. Our findings show that individual teachers’ personal attributes do influence the formation of their identities as teachers, but teacher policies and working conditions influence this process to a greater extent. Without support, novice teachers struggle to navigate the tension between their ideals, limited resources, and inconsistent teacher policies. These findings suggest it is necessary to redefine what it means to be a teacher by characterising the observable qualities of good teaching, linking them to student learning, and rectifying teacher policies in the Indonesian education system to be coherent with these characteristics.

The study explored the views of prison officer students and their supervisors regarding (1) prison officer education, (2) prison officers’ continuing professional development, (3) prison officers’ training needs and opportunities, and 4) the future of prison work. A total of ten interviews were conducted in a prison in Norway in October 2021. The prison officer students who were interviewed expressed satisfaction with their education. Communication was highlighted as the most relevant learning topic. Regarding the continuing professional development of prison officers, learning about communication and mental health issues were expressed as areas of particular significance. Learning about services for female prisoners was also brought up. The issues that impede prison officers’ participation in training were the limited time to arrange training and the lack of financial resources. The importance of collaborating and learning together with mental health professionals was expressed, but borrowing learning resources from the neighbouring disciplines was considered to be problematic because of the specific character of prison work. The future of prison work was discussed from different viewpoints. The numbers of aggressive prisoners, old prisoners and those with mental health issues were expected to increase. The need to continue the development of prisons and concerns over the future role of prison officer were also expressed. The report provided five suggestions for future research concerning correctional services.

The crisis of the system of professional development and personnel training in the energy sector exists not only in Ukraine but also all over the world. The article describes the concept of development and functioning of the industry system of personnel training in the energy sector of Ukraine. The importance of using modern web-oriented technologies to improve the skills of operational and dispatching personnel in the energy sector of Ukraine is substantiated. The meth- ods of distributed power system operating modes modelling are presented. De- velopment and software tools for the construction of distributed simulating sys- tems and particular features of cloud technologies application for the creation of a virtual training centers network in the energy sector, as well as the ways to automate the process of simulating scenarios development are described. The ex- perience of introducing remote training courses for energy specialists and remote web-based training simulators based on a comprehensive model of the energy system of Ukraine is presented. An important practical aspect of the research is the application of software and data support for the development of personnel key competencies in the energy sector for rapid recognition of accidents and, if necessary, accident management. This will allow them to acquire knowledge and practical skills to solve the problems of analysis, modelling, forecasting, and monitoring data visualization of large power systems operating modes.

As part of a cooperative agreement with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Federal Award Identification Number [FAIN]: NU50CK000586), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) began a strategic initiative in 2022 both to increase confidence in COVID-19 vaccines and to address medical misinformation and mistrust through education in health professions contexts. Specifically, the AAMC solicited proposals for integrating competency-based, interprofessional strategies to mitigate health misinformation into new or existing curricula. Five Health Professions Education Curricular Innovations subgrantees received support from the AAMC in 2022 and reflected on the implementation of their ideas in a series of meetings over several months. Subgrantees included the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, the Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine, and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. This paper comprises insights from each of the teams and overarching observations regarding the challenges and opportunities involved with leveraging health professions education to address medical misinformation and improve patient health.
