Résumé :
Education for twice exceptional (2e) children has proven to be a dilemma for many institutions as these children bring many complexities requiring a diverse and integrated group of professionals working together. As 2e children grow in a setting that can address their need for self-regulation, executive functioning, support of learning differences, and advanced level academics, professionals must continually assess and adapt their practices. The Quad Preparatory School has developed a model that integrates best practices from the fields of psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, special education, and gifted pedagogy employing instruction in a one-on-one setting adding group work when children are ready. The model uses a curriculum framework providing a context for studies in all disciplines leading to project work initiated by the strengths and interests of the students. The model has been successful in its use of dynamic adaptation to personalize the educational experience of 2e children.

Résumé :
This article outlines the hygiene roots of eugenics and puériculture in Iran and points out the social and political reasons why both arose in the 1920s. It explains Iran's demographic problem, and lists the variety of measures intended to tackle it, and demonstrates eugenics' explicit role in, and implicit effects on, these measures. It further explains why modern middle-class physicians were the dominant socio-professional group responsible for the adaptation particularly of puériculture; and shows how Iran's semi-colonial position affected its adaptation of eugenics. This placed Iran at the margins of international networks of scientific research and, at the same time, turned France into its paramount source of biomedical education and social reformism.

Résumé :
Women experiencing depressive symptoms often do not seek timely treatment from a mental health professional. This review focuses specifically on adapted approaches and tailored interventions for perinatal depression that increase their acceptability and accessibility. The effects of these adapted depression interventions cover a broad range; to compare these new treatments only those resulting in statistically significant improvement are reviewed. Some adaptations, even those provided by non–mental health specialists, produced effects equal to or surpassing those achieved by traditional treatment strategies. Suggestions for future research have two foci. First, because depressed perinatal women are also likely to suffer from comorbid disorders such as anxiety, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of adapted treatments on complex cases. Second, the implementation setting of adapted treatments has generally been limited. Evaluating how these interventions might be incorporated into new settings as part of a stepped-care approach moves research from the bench into clinical settings.

Stokes, Chris, et Mark Howden, dir. Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change. CSIRO Publishing, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643098084.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change is a fundamental resource for primary industry professionals, land managers, policy makers, researchers and students involved in preparing Australia’s primary industries for the challenges and opportunities of climate change. More than 30 authors have contributed to this book, which moves beyond describing the causes and consequences of climate change to providing options for people to work towards adaptation action. Climate change implications and adaptation options are given for the key Australian primary industries of horticulture, forestry, grains, rice, sugarcane, cotton, viticulture, broadacre grazing, intensive livestock industries, marine fisheries, and aquaculture and water resources. Case studies demonstrate the options for each industry. Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change summarises updated climate change scenarios for Australia with the latest climate science. It includes chapters on socio-economic and institutional considerations for adapting to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions sources and sinks, as well as risks and priorities for the future.

This chapter records Michigan Anishinaabe women's long history of occupational mobility and creative adaptation against the impositions of federal policies, from women's earliest involvement in the global fur trade of the seventeenth century to waged and entrepreneurial service in tourism of the Upper Peninsula. Enriched by interviews conducted in the early 1990s with women of the Saginaw Chippewa, the chapter focuses on the postwar-era generations of women and their efforts to gain entry to postsecondary education and subsequently to white-collar and professional labor. It shows how they secured opportunities unavailable to their mothers but only because foremothers were so resourceful and persevering.

Résumé :
We provide a conceptual framework for studies of the developmental and evolutionary ecology of marine invertebrate larvae and illustrate how contributions to this volume demonstrate both past achievements and the future fecundity of this research program. Our conceptual framework is anchored in the idea of model life histories, which is a category of investigation similar to but distinct from model organisms or model clades. Marine invertebrate larvae constitute a coherent, structured research program as model life histories that represent developmental, ecological, and evolutionary processes in different ways. They facilitate interdisciplinary investigation that integrates different approaches to diverse research questions about developmental mechanisms, evolutionary history, and adaptation, as well as providing a window on alterations of the marine environment due to anthropogenic climate change. Success in studies of model life histories provides a strong case for sustained professional, institutional, and financial support to carry these endeavors forward.

Résumé :
This chapter describes linking spirituality and Advanced Care Planning (ACP); fear and ACP; how thinking about death changes people; religious views of ACP; denial and ACP; personal control and ACP; ethical principles and ACP; the spiritual work of ACP, including objective asessment; adaptation and ACP; and ritual, sacrament, and ACP. The discussion holds that dying is not primarily a medical event. The process of thinking about end-of-life issues can significantly impact on an individual’s attitudes, values, and belief systems. Dying patients can challenge the cultural illusion that life is going to last forever. This can be hard for families and professionals to accept and challenges their own fears around mortality. The importance and wisdom of religious rituals and religious symbolism cannot be ignored even in the most secular of contexts as they bring comfort to many. ACP is about life before death and can foster resilience and hope.

Résumé :
Sport and exercise have been intensely advocated as protective lifestyle measures, preventing or reducing the risk of severe health issues including cardiovascular disease. More extreme forms of sport (for instance at high altitudes) have been identified as an important way of promoting cardiovascular adaptation, but have also been associated with adverse effects and even major cardiovascular events. More commonplace sport and exercise may also increase an individual’s risk of cardiac events. This publication is timely in the light of an increasing number of clinical papers in this field. The textbook provides an overview of prevention, detection, and treatment for elite athletes and young sports professionals in training which will be useful for clinical cardiologists, sports physicians, and general physicians alike. Split into eleven key areas in sports cardiology, ranging from sudden cardiac death in athletes to cardiovascular effects of substance of abuse/doping, the text is an invaluable resource covering all aspects of sports cardiology.

Résumé :
Referring to “natural behaviors” or “behaviors against nature” is common not only in the media but also in different professional fields dealing with human conduct. However, many assumptions about human nature that are taken for granted in social and human sciences are wrong when evaluated in light of recent discoveries in evolutionary behavioral biology. The aim of this chapter is to set the framework for an evolutionary analysis of the human mind and behavior and to summarize current knowledge on the evolution of Homo sapiens. Basic concepts of evolutionary biology (e.g., adaptation, ultimate versus proximate causation, genetic mismatch) are briefly explained, and their implications for a correct discussion of human nature are illustrated. The take-home message of the chapter is that a full understanding of the human mind and human behavior requires the integration of social and biological sciences, abandoning false dichotomies such as nature versus culture or instinct versus learning. This is a necessary step toward the practical implementation of ethical and legal systems more respectful of individual proclivities.

Résumé :
Students participating in mobility experiences need to constantly adapt to new circumstances, not only during the experience itself, but also before leaving and after returning to their home country. They change their lifestyle, get acquainted with other cultural forms and, in some cases, they even change habits and attitudes to adapt to the new host culture. In this scenario, the different sources of support for students are of great added-value, e.g. family, friends, classmates, as well as the receiving institution – higher education institutions (HEIs) in our case. The supporting role of HEIs in the process of sending students abroad could go beyond the administrative dimension of it. A way of doing that is by offering a provision of support services on the acknowledgment and maximisation of their learning process and acquired competences (understood as a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes – see Boyatzis, 1982; or Council of Europe, 2018) gained during their adaptation to a new international context. In this way, HEIs could increase the impact of such mobility experiences on students’ professional and personal development.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses the degree to which the texts in the RSC’s Spanish Golden Age season accomplished Boswell’s goal for these to be ‘accurate translations’ and ‘not adaptations’. Despite both theoretical and practical problems presented by using a ‘literal’ translation as part of the translation process of the comedia, it is a valuable step in translating plays of the Golden Age for English audiences. The wider purpose of this chapter is to develop a vocabulary and a vision of how the literal-to-performance-text transmission process might be improved. This allows for a more symbiotic relationship between the work of scholars, critics, and translators on the one hand, and that of theatre professionals on the other, in order to create a more robust comedia performance tradition and a model which will be useful for other foreign translations.
