Abstract Recombinant human interleukin-12 (rHuIL-12, HemaMaxTM) is being developed for mitigation of HSARS under the FDA Animal Rule using a NHP model of HSARS for proof of efficacy and clinical studies in healthy human subjects to demonstrate safety. We have shown previously that a single injection of rHuIL-12 administered 24-25 hours after lethal total body irradiaton (TBI), in the absence of antibiotics, fluids or blood products, resulted in improved survival while filgrastim (G-CSF) did not provide any survival benefit in our NHP HSARS model (Basile et al 2012, Gluzman-Poltorak et al 2014, Gluzman-Poltorak et al 2014). The mechanism by which IL-12 mitigates HSARS following TBI appears to involve multiple effects of IL-12 on hematopoieses. In our previous studies, animals treated with rHuIL-12 showed statistically significant reductions in the occurrence of severe neutropenia and severe thrombocytopenia, as well as attenuated nadirs for lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and reticulocytes. To characterize further relationship between survival and hematological nadirs (lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, RBCs and reticulocytes) in the rhesus model of HSARS and to better understand the effects of rHuIL-12 versus G-CSF on blood cell nadirs, we undertook a meta-analysis analysis across three studies in irradiated rhesus monkeys. Animals used in this analysis were irradiated (700 cGy) and treated with a single subcutaneous injection of vehicle (n=64) or rHuIL-12 50-500ng/kg (n=108) 24-25 hours after irradiation, or daily subcutaneous injections of G-CSF at 10μg/kg/d for 18 days starting 24-25 hours after irradiation (n=26). Males and females were equal in each group. Lymphocytes, neutrophils and platelets were significantly lower in decedents versus monkeys that survived to day 60 overall and this was true in each treatment group (p<0.001, Wilcoxon rank-sum test). The mean RBC nadir was significantly higher in survivors compared to non-survivors in the rHuIL-12 group (p = 0.008), but not in the control group or the G-CSF group. Lymphocytes nadir appears to be the strongest and most consistent predictor of death followed by neutrophils and platelets (Spearman’s rank correlation). RBCs and reticulocytes are less informative in terms of predicting survival status. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve area under the curve (AUC) by nadir value was assessed. The operating characteristics for lymphocytes, neutrophils and platelets allow for relatively large positive predictive values (PPV) of death with relatively high sensitivity. A cutoff value for lymphocytes nadir of 0.08x109/L (values less than or equal predicting death and higher values predicting life) allows for largest PPVs (97.2% and 92.5%) with 76.1% and 62.7% sensitivities for control and rHuIL-12 treatments, respectively. A cutoff value for neutrophils nadir of 0.03x109/L permits for 84% and 71.1% PPVs with sensitivities of 91.3% and 91.5 % for control and rHuIL-12 treatments, respectively. A cutoff value for platelets nadir of 9x109/L permits for 84.1% and 76.8% PPVs with sensitivities of 80.4% and 72.9 % for control and rHuIL-12 treatments, respectively. RBCs and reticulocytes were found less informative. To conclude, in the rhesus model of HSARS we have observed that an augmented hematological nadirs generally predicts an increased potential for survival as this effect reflects early bone marrow regeneration. The nadir for lymphocytes appears to be the strongest and most consistent predictor of death. Decrease of lymphocyte counts has been established as a best marker of bone marrow damage in a large database of human victims of acute radiation (METREPOL, Fliedner et al 2001). Thus, the correlation of our results with the human data supports the validity of our animal model as an accurate representation of human HSARS and its ability to predict effectiveness in humans exposed to lethal radiation. These data also suggest that the significant increase in early bone marrow regeneration seen in our studies, resulting in increases in nadir values for all major blood cell types, may be the main mechanism of action by which rHuIL-12 mitigates the lethality of HSARS. Het project experimenteerde met de vraag hoe je bewoners in een wijk kunt laten participeren in een kunstproject, zodat zij meer in aanraking komen met elkaar en met de kunstinstelling.

L’oralité (storytelling) en tant que pratique artistique dans le Québec d’aujourd’hui allant à l’encontre des exposés narratifs publics courants, le projet Picking Up the Storylines (« Reprendre le fil de la trame narrative ») interroge les paramètres et les résultats du processus public de la storytelling. La Charte des valeurs québécoises et la Commission de vérité et de réconciliation du Canada y sont relues en parallèle avec le Scar Project (projet Cicatrice), de Nadia Myre, et le travail du Living History Ensemble, dans le contexte du projet Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide and Human Rights Violations (« Récits de vie de Montréalais et Montréalaises déplacées par la guerre, le génocide et les violations des droits de la personne »). Une telle comparaison appelle une analyse critique en vue de déterminer quand et comment les récits supprimés, ignorés et inédits de personnes marginalisées peuvent contribuer à l’instauration de politiques libératoires.

Abstract. On board the Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) platform, the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) is a double-channel, nadir-viewing grating spectrometer measuring solar back-scattered earthshine radiances in the ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared with global daily coverage. In the ultraviolet range, its spectral resolution and radiometric performance are equivalent to those of its predecessor OMI, but its horizontal resolution at true nadir is improved by an order of magnitude. This paper introduces the formaldehyde (HCHO) tropospheric vertical column retrieval algorithm implemented in the S5P operational processor and comprehensively describes its various retrieval steps. Furthermore, algorithmic improvements developed in the framework of the EU FP7-project QA4ECV are described for future updates of the processor. Detailed error estimates are discussed in the light of Copernicus user requirements and needs for validation are highlighted. Finally, verification results based on the application of the algorithm to OMI measurements are presented, demonstrating the performances expected for TROPOMI.

Abstract. The analysis of Earth’s surface is strongly associated with the creation of three dimensional representations. In light of this, researchers involved in any realm of research as, geological, hydrological, ecological planning, city modelling, civil infrastructure monitoring, disaster management and emergency response, require 3D information of high fidelity and accuracy. For many decades, aerial photos or satellite data and photogrammetry provided the necessary information. In recent years, high-resolution imagery acquired by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) has become a cost-efficient and quite accurate solution. In this framework, an infrastructure-monitoring project, named called “PROION”, focuses among others on the generation of very fine and highly accurate 3D infrastructure (city) model. The specific study evaluates a high-resolution nadir camera and an oblique camera for the creation of a 3D representation of the Patras University Campus. During the project, two identical flights over a part of the campus were conducted. The flights were performed with a vertical take-off and landing (Vtol) fixed wind UAV equipped with PPK receiver on-board. Based on the conducted flights, many data sets have been evaluated regarding the accuracy and fidelity. It was proved that both nadir and oblique cameras produced very accurate 3D representations of the University campus buildings. The RMSE error of the nadir imagery is almost two times higher than the respective error of the oblique imagery reaching 30cm.

Abstract. Signed March 24, 1992, the Open Skies Treaty permits each state-party to conduct short-notice, unarmed, reconnaissance flights over the others' entire territories to collect data on military forces and activities. Observation aircraft equipped with sensors shall enable the observing party to identify significant military equipment. The Open Skies Treaty agreed on an observation of 30cm GSD. Based on 8 mid-format cameras for 3 flight levels, a system was adjusted to comply with the regulations. However, the overall aim was to also use the system for mapping purposes in Romania, specifically the medium altitude configuration. From this medium altitude configuration, one specific combination raised our interest. The designed wide corridor mapping system, using two RGB tilted cameras and one RGB nadir camera generates a certain range of resolution of the sideward looking tilted cameras and a non-homogenous distribution of the GSD in the overlapping areas. While a reduction of the GSD in the remote parts of the tilted cameras is a well-known and accepted fact, the effect in the overlap of the tilted cameras with the nadir one is the opposite mathematically. In some cases, such an effect can cause a better GSD in these areas than expected.

Wildland fire radiant energy emission is one of the only measurements of combustion that can be made at wide spatial extents and high temporal and spatial resolutions. Furthermore, spatially and temporally explicit measurements are critical for making inferences about fire effects and useful for examining patterns of fire spread. In this study we describe our methods for capturing and analysing spatially and temporally explicit long-wave infrared (LWIR) imagery from the RxCADRE (Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiment) project and examine the usefulness of these data in investigating fire behaviour and effects. We compare LWIR imagery captured at fine and moderate spatial and temporal resolutions (from 1 cm2 to 1 m2; and from 0.12 to 1 Hz) using both nadir and oblique measurements. We analyse fine-scale spatial heterogeneity of fire radiant power and energy released in several experimental burns. There was concurrence between the measurements, although the oblique view estimates of fire radiative power were consistently higher than the nadir view estimates. The nadir measurements illustrate the significance of fuel characteristics, particularly type and connectivity, in driving spatial variability at fine scales. The nadir and oblique measurements illustrate the usefulness of the data for describing the location and movement of the fire front at discrete moments in time at these fine and moderate resolutions. Spatially and temporally resolved data from these techniques show promise to effectively link the combustion environment with post-fire processes, remote sensing at larger scales and wildland fire modelling efforts.

Abstract Introduction Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) are two conditions that have increased in prevalence in the United States. NAFLD is a spectrum of liver disease ranging from steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) to cirrhosis. The purpose of this project is to study the relationship between OSA, measured by apnea-hypopnea index and/or arterial oxygen saturation nadir (O2 nadir) during sleep (independent variable) vs. extent of NAFLD as measured by non-invasive scores such as NAFLD Fibrosis score, aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI), BARD score and FIB-4 score (dependent variable). Methods A convenient sample of 91 haphazardly selected veterans with OSA and NAFLD from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Computerized Record System (CPRS) system were included in the study. NAFLD eligibility was determined by abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, or biopsy. Dependent variables were NAFLD scores of APRI, NAFLD Fibrosis, BARD, and FIB-4. OSA was determined by in-lab polysomnogram or home sleep study. Independent variables were AHI, O2 nadir, age and body mass index (BMI). Patients with a history of alcohol abuse or Hepatitis B or C were excluded from the study. A multiple regression analysis was used to describe the relationship between OSA and NAFLD scores. P< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Age correlated with FIB-4 score, BARD score, and NAFLD fibrosis score (p = < 0.001, 0.003, < 0.001, respectively). BMI correlated with NAFLD fibrosis score (p < 0.001). When controlled for age and BMI, AHI and O2 nadir did not correlate with APRI, NAFLD fibrosis, BARD, or FIB-4 scores. Conclusion OSA measured by AHI and O2 nadir do not correlate with severity of fatty liver disease as measured by APRI, NAFLD fibrosis, BARD, or FIB-4 scores. Support (if any) None

Diese Arbeit bietet eine solide theoretische Grundlage zu Philanthropie und religiös motivierten Spendenaktivitäten und deren Einfluss auf Wohltätigkeitstrends, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und einer auf dem Gedanken der sozialen Gerechtigkeit beruhenden Philanthropie. Untersucht werden dafür die Strukturen religiös motivierte Spenden, für die in der islamischen Tradition die Begriffe „zakat“, „Waqf“ oder im Plural auch „awqaf-“ oder „Sadaqa“ verwendet werden, der christliche Begriff dafür lautet „tithes“ oder „ushour“. Aufbauend auf diesem theoretischen Rahmenwerk analysiert die qualitative und quantitative Feldstudie auf nationaler Ebene, wie die ägyptische Öffentlichkeit Philanthropie, soziale Gerechtigkeit, Menschenrechte, Spenden, Freiwilligenarbeit und andere Konzepte des zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements wahrnimmt. Um eine umfassende und repräsentative Datengrundlage zu erhalten, wurden 2000 Haushalte, 200 zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen erfasst, sowie Spender, Empfänger, religiöse Wohltäter und andere Akteure interviewt. Die so gewonnen Erkenntnisse lassen aussagekräftige Aufschlüsse über philanthropische Trends zu. Erstmals wird so auch eine finanzielle Einschätzung und Bewertung der Aktivitäten im lokalen Wohltätigkeitsbereich möglich, die sich auf mehr als eine Billion US-Dollar beziffern lassen. Die Erhebung weist nach, dass gemessen an den Pro-Kopf-Aufwendungen die privaten Spendenaktivitäten weitaus wichtiger sind als auswärtige wirtschaftliche Hilfe für Ägypten. Das wiederum lässt Rückschlüsse zu, welche Bedeutung lokale Wohltätigkeit erlangen kann, wenn sie richtig gesteuert wird und nicht wie bislang oft im Teufelskreis von ad-hoc-Spenden oder Hilfen von Privatperson an Privatperson gefangen ist. Die Studie stellt außerdem eine Verbindung her zwischen lokalen Wohltätigkeits-Mechanismen, die meist auf religiösen und kulturellen Werten beruhen, und modernen Strukturen, wie etwa Gemeinde-Stiftungen oder Gemeinde-„waqf“, innerhalb derer die Spenden eine nachhaltige Veränderung bewirken können. Daher bietet diese Arbeit also eine umfassende wissenschaftliche Grundlage, die nicht nur ein besseres Verständnis, sondern auch den nachhaltiger Aus- und Aufbau lokaler Wohltätigkeitsstrukturen in Ägypten ermöglicht. Zentral ist dabei vor allem die Rolle lokaler, individueller Spenden, die beispielsweise für Stiftungen auf der Gemeindeebene eingesetzt, wesentlich zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung beitragen könnten – und das nicht nur in Ägypten, sondern in der gesamten arabischen Region. Als konkretes Ergebnis dieser Arbeit, wurde ein innovatives Modell entwickelt, dass neben den wissenschaftlichen Daten das Konzept der „waqf“ berücksichtigt. Der Wissenschaftlerin und einem engagierten Vorstand ist es auf dieser Grundlage gelungen, die Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) zu gründen, die nicht nur ein Modell für eine Bürgerstiftung ist, sondern auch das tradierte Konzept der „waqf“ als praktikable und verbürgte Wohlstätigkeitsstruktur sinnvoll weiterentwickelt.This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

The famous plunder of Delhi that followed the 1739 defeat of the Mughals at the Battle of Karnal by Nader Shah (r. 1736–1747) represents, in retrospect, the last world-conquering design to have risen from the Islamicate world before the 20th century. This chapter argues that Nader Shah’s building projects, initiated after the Indian campaign, introduced a self-consciously historicized articulation of an Indo-Persian empire in the 18th century. His venture, echoing those of Timur in his post-Indian conquest, included looting of building materials and technologies that were made available by hundreds of Indian craftsmen and artists taken as booty and assigned to work with locals to make a spectacularly hybrid monument as the centerpiece of an urban retreat at a natural fortress famed as Kalat-e Naderi in northeastern Iran. Nader Shah’s patronage represents an unexpectedly un-European visualization of the exotics of empire on the eve of colonial expansions.

In 1975, German choreographer Kurt Jooss created his last dance, Dixit Dominus, for Swedish-based Indian dancer Lilavati Häger. After Rani Nair reconstructed what is often seen as “minor” work, she then created Future Memory (2012/2014) to engage more directly with her inheritance, from caring for the personal things and stories that surrounded the piece to reworking its promise of dancing between European and Indian forms. Working outward from Elswit’s position as dramaturge and historian for this project, and accompanied by Nair’s letters to Häger, this chapter addresses the potential and precariousness of contemporary dance’s experiments with redoing history at the intersection of multiple contested legacies.

This book surveys the life and work of the great American composer Elliott Carter (1908–2012). It examines his formative, and often ambivalent, engagements with Charles Ives and other “ultra-modernists”, with the classicist ideas he encountered at Harvard and in his three years of study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris; and with the populism developed by his friends Aaron Copland and Marc Blitzstein in Depression-era New York, and the unique synthesis of modernist idioms that he began to develop in the late 1940s. The book re-groups the central phase of Carter’s career, from the Cello Sonata to Syringa in terms of Carter’s synthesis of European and American modernist idioms, or “neo-modernism,” and his complex relation to the European avant-garde. It devotes particular attention to the large number of instrumental and vocal works of Carter’s last two decades, including his only opera, What Next?, and a final legacy project: seven works for voice and large ensemble to poems by the founding generation of American modern poetry: e.e. cummings, T.S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams.

Mira Nair has built her career on films that contribute to the Indian identity in diaspora and attest to the prominence of Indian filmmakers in international cinema. For a filmmaker so concerned with the relationships between American and Indian heritage, Nair’s adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s 1847-1848 novel Vanity Fair (2004) appears as an outlier. However, this chapter argues that Nair’s film maintains overarching fidelity to the source text’s plot as a strategy to imbue the narrative with an Indian perspective. Nair subtly rewrites the text by eliminating the novel’s omniscient narrator and his complicity with the imperial project in favor of her own postcolonial Indian position through her use of cinematic style and the camera’s point-of-view capabilities. In asserting India’s physical presence in her adaptation, Nair also incorporates elements of Bollywood cinema into the production, including an item number dance sequence that brings Hollywood and Bollywood convention in dialogue. As a result, Nair embeds images into the narrative that directly challenge the power of the British Empire and its agents as well as Hollywood’s continuing influence over Indian cinema.

This chapter focuses on the work of photojournalist Nair Benedicto during the final years of the military dictatorship in Brazil. It examines her work in relation to other known photographs from the period in order to show some of the ways in which photography, activism, and collective memory can be articulated in visual culture. As photographer and activist, Benedicto played an important role in connecting different social movements both through her photographic practice and through her professional and political engagements. In doing so, she helped to shape the visuality associated with political and social protests in contemporary Brazilian history.

This chapter demonstrates how the transnational figure and twenty-seven-year career of Mira Nair is prototypical of female independent practitioners who negotiate diverse issues of identity and politics in their films and working practices. As an Indian filmmaker with a production company based in New York City, Nair makes films that cross multiple borders, whether of nation, race, class, sexuality or genre, to promote social activism. Highlighting her documentary film production, methods and career-long investment in non-profit organisations, Projansky and Ono explore how even her popular fictional features such as Monsoon Wedding (2001) or Vanity Fair (2004) share political and socially confrontational methods with her outreach programs.

In this chapter, Theresa Hunt explores the trajectory of the anti–sexual harassment campaigns in Egypt as one example of women’s prerevolution and antiregime protest. She examines the extensive campaigns of the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights, El Nadim Center for the Management and Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence, and the new, technology-fueled project HarassMap. By strategically gaining national and even international attention, these campaigns engaged in critique of the state’s failure to address the alarming level of sexual harassment on Cairo’s streets and pressured the state to develop appropriate policy. As these organizations combined consciousness raising with subversion of state obstacles and mobilization of the public, their work reflects aspects of the 2011 revolution that mainstream media narratives find compelling but rarely attribute to women’s activism.

The present chapter empirically examines the role of microfinance access on women empowerment by using primary data on women borrowers from different microfinance institutions in Nadia and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal in India. Microfinance institutions play an important role in strategies related to gender and development due to their active relationships with women empowerment and poverty alleviation. The various programmes under microfinance like self-help groups (SHGs) are promoted and inspired for their significant economic impacts on empowerment of women. We investigate the impact of microfinance access on three dimensions of women empowerment, which make influence upon decision making on the issues of credit, expenditure and children. We conduct a primary survey on about eight hundred respondents of women borrowers from different microfinance institutions and apply multivariate probit estimation. Our findings imply that the greater access to microfinance credit negatively impacts on economic empowerment i.e. decisions on credit and expenditure related issues.

GOME (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment) is an ESA satellite project, centered around the development of a new, diode-array based spectrometer [1]. It will measure the radiation back-scattered from the atmosphere and Earth's surface in the ultraviolet and visible range in nadir-viewing direction. This instrument will be launched in late 1994 on board the ERS-II satellite. The medium-high resolution (0.2 to 0.4 nm) and extended wavelength coverage (240 to 790 nm) of the instrument will enable profiles or column densities of different trace gases to be measured such as of O3, NO2, NO3, ClO, OClO, BrO, HCHO, and SO2 . In addition, the distribution of aerosols and surface spectral reflectance properties can be investigated.

The 3Cat-4 mission is a 1-unit CubeSat platform that serves as a technology demonstrator and educational platform for students at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Promoted by the UPC Nanosatellite and Payload Laboratory (UPC NanoSatLab), the most notable subsystems that innovate in the nanosatellite scenario are (1) the Flexible Microwave Payload - 1 (FMPL-1) [1], a cost-effective payload to execute Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R), and L-band microwave radiometry experiments using a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software-defined radio (SDR) and (2) the Nadir Antenna Deployment Subsystem (NADS) [2], an in-orbit deployable high-directivity antenna used by Earth Observation (EO) payloads. This paper presents the findings of the 3Cat-4 mission during Phase D, the qualification and production phase of the project. Since the publication of the first introductory work for this mission in 2019[3], several sections of the subsystems have been
redesigned and upgraded to correct previous design flaws or to meet new requirements. In addition, this paper addresses the educational perspective of this mission, analyzing its performance and usefulness in the aforementioned subject.

Résumé: En décembre 1950, Le Corbusier est associé à la conception de la nouvelle capitale du Pendjab indien. En complément du projet, il intégra le monument de la main ouverte élevée au dessus de la fosse de la considération. Le Corbusier déclare d’emblée que le monument de la Main Ouverte est un « complément » au programme de Chandigarh, fourni par « l’autorité ». Il est une « contribution personnelle » qui n’a pas de commanditaire. Il est de fait un élément « inattendu ». Un élément inhabituel qui n’a d’autres raisons d’être que celles propres à son architecte. Mais justement quelles sont-elles ces raisons ? Pourquoi Le Corbusier a-t-il ressenti le besoin de rajouter un monument au programme de Chandigarh ? A quelle fin ? A la gloire de qui ? En vue de quelle symbolique ? Pourquoi lui-a-t-il donné cette forme ? Pourquoi l’a-t-il fait mobile ? Et pourquoi l’a-t-il placé sur cette esplanade qui relie les bâtiments de l’assemblée et de la justice ? Le travail de recherche ici présenté tente de répondre à toutes ces questions. Il adopte, pour ce faire, une approche génétique qui cherche à comprendre comment se fait la genèse de l’œuvre. Se trata de una "contribución personal" que nadie ha solicitado. De hecho, es un elemento "inesperado". Un elemento inusual cuya razón de ser obedece al propio arquitecto. Pero cuáles son esas razones? ¿Por qué Le Corbusier sentía la necesidad de añadir un monumento al proyecto de Chandigarh? ¿Con qué fin? Para la gloria de quién? The Atmospheric Limb Tracker for Investigation of the Upcoming Stratosphere (ALTIUS) project is ESA’s ozone-monitoring mission developed as part of ESA’s Earth Watch programme and is planned for launch in 2025. The small satellite will use a high-resolution spectral imager and limb-sounding techniques to profile the ozone and other trace gases within the upper atmosphere, while supporting weather forecasting and monitoring long-term ozone trends. To carry out these mission objectives, the Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) software must provide the spacecraft with high agility, high autonomy and fine pointing accuracy. The ALTIUS satellite platform and its AOCS software are an evolution of the ESA Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA) series of satellites, which have near 45 combined years of successful in-orbit experience from PROBA-1 (launched in October 2001), PROBA-2 (launched in November 2009) and PROBA-V (launched in May 2013). Building upon its PROBA predecessors, ALTIUS ensures a high-level of on-board autonomy to the spacecraft, minimising the need of ground station commands. To complete the mission objectives, ALTIUS requires several AOCS software innovations compared to the previous PROBA missions. The autonomous novelties implemented for ALTIUS include the following: •Limb Looking Mode: Limb Looking mode is an Earth atmosphere observation mode during which the AOCS software autonomously orients the spacecraft such that the payload line of sight points to a desired tangent point at a fixed altitude above the Earth surface. It includes nine submodes dictating the desired direction of the tangent point, including for instance Backwards Limb Looking (BLL) for anti-velocity limb pointing and Pole Limb Looking (PLL) for observation towards the North or South poles. •Augmented Bdot Safe Mode: The previous PROBA satellites offer two Safe modes: Bdot and 3-Axis Magnetic modes. The Bdot mode uses the magnetic field to reduce angular rates and to roughly align, along the orbit normal, a momentum bias generated by maintaining the reaction wheels at a constant speed. The 3-Axis Magnetic mode is based on the Bdot algorithm with an additional pointing of a third axis to nadir. It requires spacecraft position knowledge. As a novelty on ALTIUS, an additional Safe mode is included: the Augmented Bdot mode. This mode is similar to the Bdot mode but additionally roughly aligns a user-specified spacecraft axis (perpendicular to the reaction wheel momentum bias axis) with the Earth’s magnetic field. This mode offers 3-axis pointing with respect to the magnetic field and the orbit normal and is more robust than the 3-Axis Magnetic mode because it does not require spacecraft position knowledge. •Thruster Management with Off-Modulation: The ALTIUS spacecraft is equipped with 4 thrusters aligned in the same direction. The AOCS software is designed to command the 4 thrusters of the spacecraft, falling back to a 2-thruster configuration in case of thruster failure, for ΔV manoeuvres while performing off-modulation of the thrusters to contribute to the attitude control and avoid wheel saturation due to disturbing torques. •Occultation Event Prediction: Time and orientation (in terms of azimuth and elevation angles) prediction of the next occultation entry and exit for up to 10 celestial targets and the Sun, where occultation is defined as the event during which a celestial target is visible from the spacecraft within lower (-10km) and upper (+100km) tangent altitude limits with respect to the Earth’s horizon. •Occultation Event Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of the elevation angle for up to 10 celestial targets and the Sun. •Stellar Occultation Mode: -Standby Submode: aligns the spacecraft with the anticipated orientation of the next occultation start and avoids blinding of the star trackers and payload. -Tracking Submode: tracks a celestial target such as the Sun, a star, a planet, or the moon through the Earth’s atmosphere during occultation. After an overview of the ALTIUS mission, its AOCS software and its novelties, this paper will focus primarily on three of the above-mentioned novelties: Limb Looking mode, Augmented Bdot Safe mode and thruster management with off-modulation. It will discuss challenges associated with their design and present their performance based on the AOCS Software System-Level Tests (SST) results. The SST campaign has been performed on a closed-loop MATLAB/Simulink simulator and has been completed in January 2023. The SST results for the other novelties, namely the occultation event prediction and monitoring and the Stellar Occultation mode, are not detailed in the present paper as they are the subject of another paper to be published and presented at the 45th Annual AAS Guidance & Control Conference in Breckenridge, Colorado, USA in February 2023.

A pesquisa tem como objetivo examinar o conceito de mito das perspectivas psicológicas e estruturais de Carl Jung e Lévi-Strauss, com as reflexões filosóficas de Maurice Merleau-Ponty e Martin Heidegger sobre a fenomenologia e discussões em torno do conceito ocidental da luz simbólica e críticas à postura instrumentalista da tecnologia. A pesquisa argumenta que a criação de mitos é uma forma necessária de tecnologia social, que pode transformar a experiência em valores altruístas a serem realizados no futuro, movidos pelo poder saciável da sabedoria e do conhecimento. Para desenvolver ainda mais essa tecnologia. A pesquisa visita a xamanologia e a fórmula mítica canônica de Lévi-Strauss a respeito da discussão que falta sobre a experiência psicológica e a comunidade. Do ponto de vista do profissional, a pesquisa também desafia a crise epistemológica do dualismo, buscando uma compreensão sistêmica do mito e da criação de mitos, usando os mais recentes métodos aplicados de gestão organizacional sustentável de Joseph M. Coll. A revisão contextual eventualmente levanta a hipótese de uma nova metodologia para a criação de mitos contemporânea, a bricolagem taoísta com um enfoque técnico específico na produção cinematográfica ensaísta. Este projeto conduzido pela prática implica uma jornada de metáforas e significantes relativos à minha história pessoal e experiência. Como um imigrante de primeira geração da Nova Zelândia, originalmente nascido em uma pequena cidade de mineração de carvão no Leste da Mongólia Interior, China, meu autoposicionamento é essencial para o processo de construção de mitos. Com pensamento sistêmico e uma metodologia hipotética, a pesquisa avalia a produção cinematográfica como uma organização de crescimento orgânico, que conta com múltiplas restrições criativas, e fluxos de trabalho algorítmicos, que servem ao estabelecimento estrutural das unidades míticas básicas necessárias. Pragmaticamente, a pesquisa estuda profissionais do cinema como Chris Marker e Adam Curtis e músicos como Elysia Crampton Chuquimia e Howie Lee para explorar criativamente as questões técnicas e teóricas do cinema ensaísta, reexaminando a História e a experiência de uma maneira socialmente consciente. Dando as boas-vindas à minha origem da cultura manchu e chinesa da Mongólia Interior e à complexidade da minha infância, a prática de design se concentrará no processo de crescimento de uma narrativa mitopoética contemporânea específica. Isto leva para um xamã briquete e um deus renascido nas costas de Bixi 赑 赑, um dragão-tartaruga que gosta de nadar no meio do nada, enquanto carrega montanhas nas costas. Este mito pessoal observa e resolve conscientemente o self no cenário da crise do Antropoceno. As representações e os conceitos são encorajados a crescer e se transformar em novas descobertas e autorrealizações, como um processo interno de aprendizagem que ajuda o self e o público a chegar mais perto da voz do inconsciente e das respostas emocionais. Em última análise, a pesquisa capitaliza conceitos contemporâneos para promover a sabedoria da autoaceitação como paz interior. O objetivo é revelar o Tao do mito e da criação de mitos como uma resposta tecnológica para resolver o apelo de David Attenborough por mudanças de paradigma global em seu livro “Uma Vida no Nosso Planeta”.

Spacecraft rendezvous (RDV) are space missions in which a first satellite, called servicer, or chaser, has to reach another spacecraft, known as the client, or target. This has numerous applications, such as for on-orbit servicing, e.g. refueling and repairing of active satellites [1], assembly and manufacturing of large structures in space [2], active debris removal [3], asteroids deflection [4], and military purposes. One of the primary challenges of spacecraft rendezvous is the need for highly accurate guidance systems. Optimal trajectories are sought from the far-range to the close proximity to minimize fuel consumption or time. Another important aspect is the use of propulsion systems to maneuver the spacecraft such as electric or chemical thrusters. This choice depends on the specific mission requirements and constraints, such as the required delta-v, and the available power and propellant. In addition to these technical challenges, spacecraft rendezvous also requires careful planning and coordination. This can include developing detailed mission plans and procedures, as well as conducting simulations and ground testing to verify that the spacecraft and systems will perform as expected. Overall, spacecraft rendezvous is a complex and challenging task that demands a combination of advanced technology and careful planning. However, within an ever-demanding world of commercial and military space operations, autonomy is and will be playing a key role in maximizing profits and guaranteeing sovereignty. To this end, novel approaches of embedded optimization are found to reduce the need for communication with the ground, allowing for greater responsiveness in front of evolving or uncertain environments, thus leading to mission success [5, 6, 7]. This Ph.D. work stems from the RAPTOR (Robotic and Artificial intelligence Processing Test on Representative Target) project, uniting academia and industry, and aiming at providing disruptive solutions to spacecraft rendezvous. The final paper proposes an approach for modeling scheduling constraints using the successive convexification framework. This method can handle integer constraints and greatly reduce computational complexity from exponential to polynomial, making it suitable for on-board computations. This approach implements convexified if-else constraints to handle a variety of operations such as hold points or propulsion switches between chemical and electric firings. On the attitude side, target line-of-sight and nadir-pointing antennas during communication windows are enforced. Further, in the case of electric propulsion, a coupled approach considers proper alignment of the chaser’s attitude to produce the desired delta-v. This application allows the authors to demonstrate the interest of the proposed modeling approach in realistic scenarios with on-board autonomous time constraints. For instance, the convergence of the algorithm in finite time is discussed. A 6-DOF fuel-optimal trajectory is generated which satisfies linear initial / target states constraints and verifies both translational and attitude equations with quaternions. As COVID-19 vaccines have been deployed and scaled, concerns about vaccine acceptance have emerged. Effective management of the virus requires that communities everywhere buy into the public health measures designed to protect them, including vaccines. Low acceptance presents a serious challenge for achieving sufficient coverage to reduce circulation of the virus and the risk of new variants emerging. Surveys conducted early in the pandemic showed that the Middle East region had one of the lowest COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rates globally. The low acceptance is driven by specific factors in the region and its different countries and populations; these factors need to be taken into account when formulating policy, programmes and interventions. This review synthesises evidence on vaccine acceptance among two key groups in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region: teachers and health workers. It draws from academic studies most of which were cross-sectional studies, largely conducted between February 2020 and June 2021, and grey literature reports, including social listening reports. This review is intended to inform strategies for risk communications and community engagement (RCCE) relating to COVID-19 vaccine uptake, with the aim of boosting confidence in and acceptance of the vaccines among these groups across the region. It is part of the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) series on social science considerations relating to COVID-19 vaccines and was developed for SSHAP by Anthrologica (Nadia Butler and Soha Karam) at the request of the UNICEF MENA Regional Office. It was reviewed by Rose Aynsley (WHO) Amaya Gillespie (UNICEF) and Olivia Tulloch (Anthrologica). The evidence review is the responsibility of SSHAP.
