Résumé :
This study, emerging from workshop activity carried out as part of the course on ECONOMY AND ADMINISTRATION OF CO-OPERATION AND NON-PROFIT, represents an examination of the economic-financial dimension of the work of the Tuscan voluntary organisations. It is inserted within an articulated research process devoted to an analysis of the accountability of these third sector agents, in the awareness that voluntary work has always been an important factor in civil progress. More specifically, the economic and financial information made available to the provinces as a result of the obligation on the voluntary organisations to deposit the annual financial statement has been fully exploited. This compliance has thus been transformed from a mere bureaucratic procedure into an opportunity for a collective cognitive enrichment through collection at regional level, reclassification and the aggregate analysis of the economic and financial data relating to the management reports (profit and loss accounts) of the voluntary organisations for 2004-2005. This has made it possible to underscore the nature and provenance of the economic and financial resources that accrue annually to such bodies, as well as the principal productive factors "consumed" in the performance of their activities.

Hedayat Munroe, Nazanin. Sufi Lovers, Safavid Silks and Early Modern Identity. Amsterdam University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463721738.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book examines a group of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century figural silks depicting legendary lovers from the Khamsa (Quintet) of epic Persian poetry. Codified by Nizami Ganjavi in the twelfth century, the Khamsa gained popularity in the Persian-speaking realm through illustrated manuscripts produced for the elite, creating a template for illustrating climactic scenes in the love stories of “Layla and Majnun” and “Khusrau and Shirin” that appear on early modern silks. Attributed to Safavid Iran, the publication proposes that dress fashioned from these silks represented Sufi ideals based on the characters. Migration of weavers between Safavid and Mughal courts resulted in producing goods for a sophisticated and educated elite, demonstrating shared cultural values and potential reattribution. Through an examination of primary source materials, literary analysis of the original text, and close iconographical study of figural designs, the study presents original cross-disciplinary arguments about patronage, provenance, and the socio-cultural significance of wearing these silks.

Żabiński, Grzegorz, Marcin Woźniak, Jarosław Gramacki, and Artur Gramacki. East Germanic Ironmaking in the Roman Period. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2025. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781350556409.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Making a study of East Germanic iron smelting in the Roman period, this book gives an in-depth account of the development of metallurgy in the Przeworsk Culture. Its two main ironmaking centres – the Holy Cross Mountains and Masovia – were the largest iron production regions beyond the borders of the Roman Empire. Apart from serving local demand – where it was used for artefacts of many kinds, which are abundantly found in grave furnishings – a considerable part of Przeworsk Culture iron is likely to have been exported to other territories. Despite more than 60 years of research and scholarship on Przeworsk Culture iron metallurgy, this is the first book to carry out smelting slag and ore analyses using the most up-to-date methods available in archaeological science. More specifically, this study also applies a variety of statistical methods to the results of the elemental analyses of nearly 270 smelting slag and ore samples from its territory. Offering an overview of statistical approaches used in iron provenance studies and a detailed step-by-step research methodology, this book paves the way for future studies, including artefact provenance analyses using the latest archaeometric methods. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Research reported in this book was funded by the National Science Centre Poland. Open access was funded by Grzegorz Zabinski. The Przeworsk Culture was an important Late Pre-Roman-Late Roman Period culture that existed in the eastern part of Magna Germania in Central Europe. Among its remarkable traits there were a high number of iron artefacts in grave furnishings and a very well-developed iron metallurgy. Its two main ironmaking centres – the Holy Cross Mountains and Masovia – were among the largest iron production regions beyond the borders of the Roman Empire, their total output being c. 12,000 tons of iron. Apart from serving local demand, a considerable part of Przeworsk Culture iron may have been exported to other territories. In spite of more than 60 years of research on Przeworsk Culture metallurgy, no artefact provenance analyses using the most recent methods have been carried out so far for it. In this book, multivariate statistical methods were applied to process the results of chemistry analyses of nearly 270 iron ore and smelting slag samples from its territory, being the first book-length work of this kind focusing on the entire archaeological culture. Compositional differences between the sample chemistries from the three most important ironmaking regions of this culture (the Holy Cross Mountains, Masovia and Silesia) were pointed out. This will pave way for future studies, including artefact provenance analyses with the use of the newest analytical techniques. This book also contains an overview of statistical approaches used in iron provenance studies and a detailed step-by-step research protocol. A complete dataset with calculation details is provided, making the obtained results verifiable and reproducible.

Résumé :
The Oxford Handbook of Archaeological Ceramic Analysis draws together topics and methodologies essential for the socio-cultural, mineralogical, and geochemical analysis of archaeological ceramic. Ceramic is one of the most complex and ubiquitous archaeomaterials in the archaeological record: it occurs around the world and through time in almost every culture and context, from building materials and technological installations to utilitarian wares and votive figurines. For more than 100 years, archaeologists have used ceramic analysis to answer complex questions about economy, subsistence, technological innovation, social organization, and dating. The volume is structured around the themes “Research design and data analysis,” “Foundational concepts,” “Evaluating ceramic provenance,” “Investigating ceramic manufacture,” “Assessing vessel function,” and “Dating ceramic assemblages.” It provides a common vocabulary and offers practical tools and guidelines for ceramic analysis using techniques and methodologies ranging from network analysis and typology to rehydroxylation dating and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Each chapter provides the theoretical background and practical guidelines, such as cost and destructiveness of analysis, for each technique, as well as detailed case studies illustrating the application and interpretation of analytical data for answering anthropological questions.

Résumé :
This monograph presents a significant portion of the scientific results of the archaeological excavations at the Bronze Age settlement site of Punta di Zambrone on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria (southern Italy). These excavations were conducted from 2011 to 2013 in an Italian-Austrian cooperation. The book is the first in a series dedicated to the final publication of those excavations and focuses on the later part of the settlement history (13th–12th cent. BCE). Major topics include the topography of the site (including a harbour bay), its chronology, investigations into the economic basis of the Bronze Age society and its local, regional and interregional interactions. The new data from Punta di Zambrone are evaluated in comparison with new research results from coeval sites in Italy and Greece, which forms the basis for a historical contextualization of the settlement and thus contributes to the broader reconstruction of Mediterranean history at the end of the second millennium BCE. These coeval sites are presented by their excavators or investigators. The authors conducted geophysical and bathymetric surveys as well as underwater archaeological investigations, typological analyses of artefacts, a definition of the relative and absolute chronology, archaeobotanic and archaeozoological studies, aDNA analysis, Sr isotope analyses on human and animal teeth, chemical and Pb isotope analyses on metal artefacts, provenance analyses of pottery vessels, amber and stone artefacts (from Zambrone and other sites).

Résumé :
This book contains catalogues, analyses, photographs and drawings of some 2,000 archaeological artifacts excavated from the Insula of the Menander in Pompeii. The catalogues, and analyses are organized by provenance--buildings, rooms, and location within rooms--so that the reader can understand the artifacts as household assemblages. The functions of artifacts and groups of artifacts are discussed, as are the Latin names which are often given to these artifacts, and the relationships of these assemblages to the state of occupancy of the buildings in the Insula during the last years of Pompeii. This study, therefore, provides a wealth of information, not only on the range and use of artifacts in Pompeian houses but also on Roman artifacts, and Roman society, more generally.

Résumé :
Drawing on the resources created by the Institute of Historical Dialectology at the University of Edinburgh (now the Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Linguistics), such as eLALME (the electronic version A Linguistic Atlas of Late Medieval English), LAEME (A Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English) and LAOS (A Linguistic Atlas of Older Scots), this volume illustrates how traditional methods of historical dialectology can benefit from new methods of corpus data-collection to test out theoretical and empirical claims. In showcasing the results that these digital text resources can yield, the book highlights novel methods for presenting, mapping and analysing the quantitative data of historical dialects, and sets the research agenda for future work in this field. Bringing together a range of distinguished researchers, the book sets out the key corpus-building strategies for working with regional manuscript data at different levels of linguistic analysis including syntax, morphology, phonetics and phonology. The chapters also show the ways in which the geographical spread of phonological, morphological and lexical features of a language can be used to improve our assessment of the geographical provenance of historical texts.

Résumé :
In this chapter, the author engages another stream of recent theology similar to the analytic Thomism in Chapter 10: the theology of Kathryn Tanner. Tanner casts her proposals on divine agency and divine action largely in terms of a debate about the grammar of Christian discourse, a trope that has its provenance in the history of twentieth-century analytic theology. This chapter thus supplements the previous one, but develops its central concerns in two ways. First, the author attempts to show that Tanner’s work, despite appearances to the contrary, pursues the same themes of the Thomist tradition seen in Chapter 10. Second, he seeks to show that the proposals under review do not proceed only from the doctrine of creation, but also the attempt to resolve the problem of freedom and grace stemming from the work of Augustine in the Western tradition.

Résumé :
Rather than focusing exclusively on Aristotle’s own account of shame and its possible shortcomings, this chapter offers a philosophical meditation on contrasting interpretations of the emotion of shame within four academic discourses: social psychology, psychological anthropology, educational psychology, and Aristotelian scholarship. It turns out that within each of these discourses there is a mainstream interpretation which emphasizes shame’s expendability or moral ugliness, but also a heterodox interpretation which seeks to retrieve and defend shame. The provenance of the mainstream interpretation merits scrutiny as the heterodox interpretation seems to offer a more realistic picture of shame’s role in moral development. The chapter suggests ways forward for more balanced analyses of the nature, moral justification, and educative role of shame, by reconstructing Aristotle’s own account of shame.

Résumé :
In many of his political writings, Carl Schmitt seeks to render conflict and struggle visible and recognizable. He wages a metapolitical struggle against depoliticizing types of spirit and for the political. The meaning of history, as this chapter shows, is a crucial terrain for this metapolitical struggle: friends and enemies are symbolized and rendered (in)visible through historical discourses. The analysis demonstrates that Schmitt strongly rejects representations of history that tend to obfuscate its political nature, such as ideologies of progress or the idea of repetition in history. Instead, he advocates a sober and profane image of history, acknowledging its plural and contingent nature. Paradoxically, a figure of theological provenance, the katechon, is the minimal rest of an eschatological vision that Schmitt considers necessary to keep history and theology apart and to maintain an open and profane understanding of history.

Résumé :
The Tebtunis temple library provides a unique opportunity to investigate the operation of an institutional library from ancient Egypt. This chapter focuses on a range of formal features, palaeography, and the maintenance of texts and manuscripts. An analysis and comparison of formal features—e.g. the choice of new vs reused papyrus, choice of script, and the use of guidelines and pagination—with contemporary material from other sites reveals variation in practice and indicates general local trends. However, there is also significant variation within the temple library itself, and some features are closely linked to specific scribes and their personal habits. The many distinctive hands attested in the library leads to the related question of paleography and orthography and the extent to which these factors may help to determine the provenance of specific texts. Finally, the maintenance and transmission of texts and manuscripts through collation, corrections, repair, and recopying is addressed.

Résumé :
This policy paper examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on information integrity in electoral contexts across Latin America. Drawing on case studies from Brazil’s and Mexico’s 2024 elections, it analyses how AI tools are used to create, curate and moderate political content online, with particular attention to their effects on marginalized groups such as women, Indigenous communities and LGBTQIA+ individuals. While the use of generative AI in elections remains limited, its potential to undermine democratic discourse and amplify harmful content demands urgent attention. To protect democratic processes, this policy paper calls for a robust regulatory framework that includes transparency obligations for platforms, safeguards against AI-facilitated gender-based violence and inclusive governance strategies. It recommends stronger oversight of AI use in elections, provenance systems for synthetic content and independent auditing of content curation algorithms. As AI evolves, so too must our commitment to electoral integrity and the protection of all voices in the democratic sphere.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Focusing on Alice Munro’s last three books, this book examines the differences between these volumes and the rest of her work to analyse the emergence and the difference of her 'late style'. Alice Munro has effectively reshaped the short story as a form. This book focuses on Munro’s art of recursion - an approach that has been evident throughout her career but came to the fore in her last three books, The View from Castle Rock (2006), Too Much Happiness (2009) and, especially, Dear Life (2012). This recursion and return manifest themselves not only in Munro's return to previously published pieces, but also to her Scottish heritage, which can be read as entrance to her own understanding of herself and her life. Its provenance, displayed through archival evidence, is complex yet reveals a writer intent on a precise late style. Munro's final works serve as a coda to both her late style and to her entire career as arguably one of the finest short story writers ever to put pen to paper.

Résumé :
Archives and Emotionsargues, at its most fundamental level, that emotions matter and have always mattered to both the people whose histories are documented by archives and to those working with the documents these contain. This is the first study to put archivists and historians—scholars and practitioners from different settings, geographical provenance, and stages of career—in conversation with one another to examine the interplay of a broad range of emotions and archives, traditional and digital, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries across national and disciplinary borders. Drawing on methodologies from the history of emotions and critical archival studies, this book provides an original analysis of two interconnected themes through a selected number of case studies: the emotional dynamics affecting the construction and management of archives; and the emotions and their effects on the people engaging with them, such as archivists, researchers, and a broad range of communities. Its main message is that critically investigating the history and mechanics of emotions—including their suppression and exclusion—also being conscious of their effects on people and societies is essential to understanding how archives came to hold deep civic and ethical implications for both present and future. This study thus establishes a solid base for future scholarship and interdisciplinary collaborations and challenges academic and non-academic readers to think, work, and train new generations differently, fully aware that past and present choices have—and might again—hurt, inspire, empower, or silence.

Résumé :
Under the Skin: Feminist Art and Art Histories from the Middle East and North Africa Today is set out to show what is beneath the surface, under the appearances of skin, body, colour and provenance, and not the cultural fixities or partial views detached from the realities of communities, cultures and practices from the area. Through 12 chapters, Under the Skin brings together artistic practices and complex histories informed by feminism from diverse cultural and geographical contexts: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. The aim is not to represent all of the countries from the Middle East and North Africa, but to present a cross-section that reflects the variety of nations, cultures, languages and identities across the area—including those of Berber, Mizrahi Jews, Kurdish, Muslim, Christian, Arab, Persian and Armenian peoples. It thus considers art informed by feminism through translocal and transnational lenses of diverse ethnic, linguistic and religious groups not solely as a manifestation of multiple and complex social constructions, but also as a crucial subject of analysis in the project of decolonising art history and contemporary visual culture. The volume offers an understanding on how art responds to and shapes cultural attitudes towards gender and sexuality, ethnicity/race, religion, tradition, modernity and contemporaneity, and local and global politics. And it strives to strike a balance by connecting the studies of scholars based in the European-North American geography with those attached to the institutions in the Middle East and North Africa in order to stimulate different feminist and decolonial perspectives and debates on art and visual culture from the area.
