Black, Jeremy. A Military History of Britain. Praeger, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400685750.

Résumé :
Starting his account at a time when Britain was poised to rule the world's oceans—and much of its land as well—prolific historian Jeremy Black details the nation's involvement in global affairs from the late-18th century to the present.A Military History of Britainis an account of military structures and cultures, and relevant socio-political contexts, as well as of conflicts. As in all of his writing, Black seeks to challenge conventional assumptions and offer illuminating new perspectives. Black begins by setting the background to British military history, in particular the anti-(large) army ideology, the maritime tradition, and the growing geo-political rivalry with France. After the defeat of the French in North America, Britain would become the world's leading maritime power. The 19th Century would see tension between Britain and the new United States, France, Germany, and an increasing emphasis on imperial conquests. Organized in three parts: Britain as Imperial Parent; Britain as Imperial Rival; and Britain as Imperial Partner. A primary focus of this account will be the 20th century, examining Britain and World War I (including Britain as a world power and issues of imperial overstretch) and World War II (and the subsequent wars of Imperial Retention in Malaya, Kenya, and Cyprus). As in all of his writing, Black seeks to challenge conventional assumptions, and offer illuminating new perspectives. Black details the involvement of Britain in global affairs up to the present. Recent issues of continuing importance include Britain as a nuclear power, the end of the East of Suez policy, NATO membership; out-of-area conflict (from the Falklands to Iraq), and the adjustment to new global roles. This wide-ranging and broadly-based account is designed for students and for the general reader.

Otte, T. G. Leuthen. Oxford University PressOxford, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192870490.001.0001.

Résumé :
Abstract Leuthen (1757) is one of the best-known battles of the Seven Years’ War, the most consequential conflict in continental Europe between the Thirty Years’ War and the wars of Revolutionary and then Napoleonic France. Leuthen confirmed the reputation of Frederick II of Prussia as one of history’s greatest military commanders. His victory rested on superior drill and firepower, intelligent use of the terrain, and his perfecting of the ‘oblique battle order’. But faulty intelligence and flawed decision-making on the Austrian side were no less important. Leuthen was of profound significance for the war and for the future course of European history. Frederick’s victory reversed the military dynamic of the current conflict. It kept Prussia in the war, preserved the existence of the Prussian state, and laid the foundations of its further rise. It also ensured Britain’s final commitment to what was becoming a global conflict. The significance of Prussia’s victory extended beyond the military sphere. The ‘Leuthen myth’, encapsulated in the evocative image of Frederick’s exhausted grenadiers intoning the church hymn ‘Now thank ye all our Lord’, shaped political and historical disputes in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Germany. It also influenced the intellectual assumptions that underpinned Prusso-German war planning before the First World War. The ‘Chorale of Leuthen’ provided the accompanying chords of German cultural developments up to the collapse of the Third Reich in the burning ruins of Berlin. But even to the present day its echo can still be heard. As with other great battles, Leuthen is constantly reassessed and rewritten as an element of national culture and identity.
