Tomasello, Bruno. "A quantum mechanical study of the dynamical properties of spin-ice materials." Thesis, University of Kent, 2014. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/48015/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The spin-ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 (HTO) and Dy2Ti2O7 (DTO) are part of a large family of compounds called magnetic pyrochlore oxides. Typically, the magnetism of these systems arise from the rare-earth ions RE3+ which sits at the vertices of a lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra and couple with the degrees of freedom of the crystal leading to a wide spectrum of exotic phenomena. In spin-ices the magnetic moments of the individual RE3+ ions are large enough to let their mutual dipolar interactions be the leading factors for the thermodynamics. Moreover, the strength and the symmetries of their l

Steer, Brian. "Selective characterisation of engineered nanoparticles in aerosols using nucleation and optical techniques." Thesis, University of Kent, 2014. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/48699/.

Résumé :
The aim of this project is to develop novel approaches for the detection and characterisation of engineered and other potentially harmful nanoparticles in the air. In particular we wish to distinguish specific nanomaterials from the background atmospheric aerosol to provide a means of measuring human exposure to nanomaterials that may present a risk to health. Ideally, solutions should be practically deployable in the field. The metrics considered for measurement across this project are: size, number, chemical nature and surface area. Two main approaches are chosen to address these requirement

Hedges, Morgan. "High performance solid state quantum memory." Phd thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/150814.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis demonstrates an efficient quantum memory that for the first time preserves more quantum information than it loses. Beyond this, it describes how even higher efficiency may be realised without sacrificing the other performance characteristics that are required for a practical device. A quantum memory is a device to store and recall the quantum state of light. Such a memory will be required for most applications of the emerging field of quantum information. The closest practical application is quantum repeaters for long distance encryption. A more distant target is quantum computing.

Résumé :
The concept of the corner transfer matrix (CTM) was first discovered by Baxter in 1968, when he derived a set of variational matrix equations, which for finite matrix sizes, could be numerically solved to obtain a sequence of approximations for the statistical mechanical properties of a system of monomers and dimers on a rectangular lattice [1]. It was not until 1978, however, in a seminal paper entitled "Variational Approximations for Square Lattice Models in Statistical Mechanics" [4], that Baxter outlined his CTM variational method, which brought to light the potential power of the former

Résumé :
This thesis has investigated the structural and vibrational properties of ion beam synthesized Co nanoparticles (NPs) and the influence of ion irradiation on the size, shape, crystallographic phase and structure. The evolution of the aforementioned properties were determined using a combination of laboratory and synchrotron based techniques, including cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The results of this thesis have revealed a rich array of shape and structural transformations in Co NPs and highl

Résumé :
The recent advances in trapping, cooling, and manipulation of alkali atoms have opened the possibility to create and study novel states of matter. The quantum nature of matter becomes relevant at ultracold temperatures and emergent phenomena, such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), are strongly affected by the interaction between atoms and their statistics. In this thesis we will address some of the physics in ultracold quantum gases, with Bose (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3) and Fermi statistics (Chapter 4), as well as ultracold Bose-Fermi mixtures (Chapter 3). Rogers, Lachlan James. "Optical pumping cycle of the negative nitrogen-vacancy centre in diamond." Phd thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/155811.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The negative Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) colour centre in diamond is an atomic-level impurity that is remarkably well suited for quantum information processing and quantum metrology applications. Underlying these properties is the fact that optical illumination causes the NV centre to preferentially populate one of its three spin levels. The mechanism that gives rise to this spin polarisation has not been well understood, despite intense research interest in the NV centre and its applications. This thesis arrives at an account of the spin polarisation mechanism, although a detailed theoretical treat

Résumé :
The use of non-classical states of light, such as squeezed states, have allowed the exploration of quantum mechanical effects that had previously been the subject of speculation only. One of the more interesting aspects of quantum mechanics is when two objects become linked in a process known as quantum entanglement. This property has been the focus of much research due to the potential applications that are expected to emerge from entangled systems. This thesis focuses on the various spatial properties of continuous variable entangled systems, and on simplifying entanglement experiments for a

Résumé :
The nitrogen-vacancy (N-V⁻) colour centre in diamond has potential applications in quantum information processing and single photon generation. It is currently the only known defect in a solid detected at a single site level that has a non-zero spin in the electronic ground state. For the proposed applications it is desirable to have a good understanding of the electronic structure and photodynamics of the centre, however this is currently not the case. Various models have been proposed to explain the fluorescence characteristics observed in single site experiments. The challenge has be
