Résumé :
Cruises were the fastest growing sector in the travel industry. The rapid growth in demand was created originally by demand from North America, more recently Europe, and finally the rest of the world, China and Australia in particular. One of the main reasons for the rapid development and growth in popularity of cruises is that the cruise lines were successfully adapting to new travel trends delivering cruise ships with facilities and experiences tailored to the needs of travellers from all market segments. The corona crisis hit the cruise industry heavily and disrupted all plans, schedules and forecasts. This paper aims to analyze which factors were driving the demand for cruising on the world's leading source markets and the challenges facing the industry in a post-pandemic world. The findings show that the rapid growth in demand of cruise tourism was due to several factors, including the long-term growth in consumers’ disposable income, the adaptation of products to the requirements of new source markets and different market segments, more cruise capacity in new regions, and the development of national cruise brands.

Many companies are using their networks in order to overcome psychic distance – liability of foreignness – and liability of outsidership; and networks at domestic markets can be a base in which SMEs can find a lever to get a rapid internationalization process. Regarding this topic has been developed a case study in the Polish market, where a local retailer (“Biedronka”) owned by a Portuguese group (“Jerónimo Martins”) is offering Portuguese products. In order to apply a constructivist methodology, using the case study method, five SMEs where selected in order to understand if co-operation between these companies and a LE (Large Enterprise) would be a way in order to overcome the liability of foreignness and the liability of outsidership. It was also our purpose the understanding of which are the main issues that promote insidership and also the promotion of a rapid internationalization. Our conclusions have shown a LE as a source of institutional and market-specific knowledge, and regarding this last type of knowledge, as source of opportunities, and also how a SME with internationalization knowledge, an international focus and adaptation skills (in order to adapt products and prices) can introduce in a co-operative international venture, in far psychic markets, the ingredients needed to get a successful and rapid entry in a foreign market. Trust as a resource, accumulated during lasting relationships in the domestic market, has been shown as a basic requirement to develop these co-operative approaches in international markets.

Résumé :
AbstractThe sustainability transition is reshaping the operational landscape of forest industries and their societal roles. While much attention is directed towards major forest companies and units situated in central regions of a country, smaller forest actors in remote areas have received comparatively less focus. In this chapter, we delve into forest industries operating in regional inland peripheries in northeast Finland and northern Sweden—locations characterised by their atypical circumstances. These forest industries are relatively small-scale compared to major players in the sector. Our case studies are strategically positioned amidst nationally and globally significant forest resources, placing them at the forefront of the sustainability transition. We explore how peripheral forest industries interpret their interrelations with sustainability transition agendas and the socio-economic environment. Additionally, we investigate how these industries navigate the dynamic currents of agendas, markets, and crises. Our inquiry is informed by the perspectives of local policymakers and representatives from peripheral forest industries. Interviews reveal that prospects are generally optimistic, particularly in light of the momentum generated by green growth initiatives and related sustainability agendas, as well as the proximity to forest resources. However, the process of adaptation has become increasingly unpredictable and challenging due to rapid and sometimes conflicting changes, as well as persistent socio-economic disadvantages.

Résumé :
The housing market in the era of COVID-19. A comparative study of Poznań and Varna. Purpose: The aim of the study is to characterise and interpret the impact of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) as an unexpected stimulus on the participants of the housing market. The research was designed not only to obtain knowledge about contemporary market trends (the cognitive aspect) but also to support market entities in shaping optimised investment and housing decisions (the practical aspect). Design/methodology/approach: The research is based on official statistical data describing transactions on the housing markets of two selected European countries and their cities – Poznań (Poland) and Varna (Bulgaria), in the period between 2018 and 2020. The methodology of comparative analysis has been applied to purposefully selected case studies. Furthermore, the authors have drawn on the possibilities offered by the analysis of the activity and volatility of transaction prices on housing markets. Findings: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant, yet short-term impact on the functioning of residential markets in Bulgaria and Poland in 2020 (based on Varna and Poznań). The dissemination of global information concerning the scale of the epidemic has most severely disrupted the activity on both the primary and secondary housing markets in Bulgaria. The secondary housing market in Poland reacted in a similar way, which resulted in a significant instability of the trend. The primary market in Poland turned out to be relatively most resistant to the stimuli related to the pandemic situation. What is common for both analysed countries and cities is a change in the shape of house price indexes in 2020 compared to 2018–2019. Originality and value: The research is a part of the contemporary trend of assessing the impact of atypical factors disrupting market trends. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the functioning of housing markets, forcing unprecedented global responses. The example of the comparative analysis of the two European countries presented in the article allows for indicating the directions and scale of rapid changes which reflect the process of sudden adaptation of societies to previously unknown conditions. Such analyses, which serve as ex-post evaluation to some extent, allow for better preparation of specialists in the field of housing market activities to meet the needs created by unusual stimuli. They also allow for more effective planning of measures to mitigate the effects of market shocks in the sphere of housing.

Due to the growing importance of marketing channels in market economies and the dominance of trade, particularly retail, as well as the fact that current economic flows in the Republic of Serbia, in the process of transitioning from an administrative to a market system of economy, highlight channels of traffic and distribution as a central problem and area of business rather than product, price, and promotion, the subject of this paper is precisely marketing channels, i.e., trade in the Republic of Serbia. The contemporary business environment requires a different approach to business. Between domestic and foreign markets, there is a very pronounced competition. The demands and needs of consumers are more complex, and their expectations have increased. Rapid adaptation is necessary due to constant changes in the environment. On the one hand, it is essential to monitor changes and adapt, while on the other hand, it is essential to show initiative. All these mentions indicate the absence of a single formula that guarantees success, therefore flexibility, proactivity, and willingness to accept changes appear as key success factors.

Résumé :
The article describes the living conditions, situation and spatial placement of Ukrainian forced migrants in the Czech Republic. As a result of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, almost 370,000 Ukrainians fleeing the war received temporary shelter in the Czech Republic. The research methodology is based on the results of a sociological survey, the purpose of which was to establish the living conditions of refugees in the Czech Republic and their attitudes towards further stay. It has been established that the majority of migrants are concentrated in the capital (Prague), Central Bohemia, Moravian-Silesian and South Moravian regions. Among the migrants, natives from the western regions of Ukraine and the temporarily occupied territories of the south and east predominate almost equally. The key aspects in choosing a place of accommodation were cities where one of the family members worked or the reason was the big cities. Although half of the forced migrants are children, and 4/5 of the adult population are women, almost 70,000 migrants have already started working in official jobs. Despite this level of adaptation, 80% of refugees are determined to return home. Of course, the language barrier was the main problem during adaptation among the immigrants, but the majority are satisfied with the living conditions and the attitude of the Czechs towards them. Ukrainian labour migrants performed a fairly significant economic function in the Czech Republic even before the war, so the mass influx of forced migrants significantly revived the labour market and, due to social benefits, affected the economic situation. The economic effect of refugees is always largely negative, but in a rather short period it is compensated by the rapid adaptation of Ukrainians and the filling of certain sections of the labour market.

Résumé :
Abstract Modern manufacturing systems often cannot efficiently cope with rapid changes in market demands. A main challenge is the inability of current manufacturing systems to utilize the capabilities and capacities of manufacturing resources efficiently due to inefficient data models and adaptation algorithms. To deal with transiently changing market demands, manufacturing systems often either under-provision or over-provision resources. However, both under-provisioning and over-provisioning incur unnecessary costs. The lack of sufficient resources leads to missing opportunities for new work, and over-provisioning incurs a cost by wasting investment, time, maintenance, and other unused resources. In this work, we optimize manufacturing configurations using the known capabilities and capacities of manufacturing equipment. In particular, the work provides an object-oriented data model that complements a manufacturing systems’ semantic model and the mathematical formalization of the data model for the multi-demand satisfaction problem. The proposed methodology is validated by optimizing the planning for small-box hinged product assemblies in aerospace manufacturing. This product family comprises rudders and elevators, which share commonalities in functionality, size, and build philosophy. Therefore, they can be assembled in a reconfigurable environment with common pick and place, drilling, fastening, and inspection procedures.

Résumé :
The sequence of rapid transformations from a material resource-based society to a society based on intelligence and creativity demonstrates the need to accept, integrate and implement knowledge-based management in any organization, regardless of its status. Major changes, both globally and nationally, oblige us to reflect carefully on the diversity of requirements and to identify the best strategies for the recovery of the Romanian economy. A critical assessment of the situation of Romanian organizations in all fields of activity, compared to changes at international level, will lead to the approach of new strategies and rapid measures for the recovery and development of the economy, with a view to maintaining the pace of competitiveness, with the major players in the international market. Change and economic evolution mean intelligence, information and creativity. The external environment is a competitive, and in need of survival. It depends on the social, legal, economic evolution, the technologies and services used, but also on the adaptation to evolutionary changes in order to resist the competitive market. We must be aware, however, that each country has its peculiarities, and I am referring here to the mentality, customs, but also to the relief, demographic state, national and human resources that Romania has. We're looking to keep up to date with the new research on the respective domain. The research of the literature, in order to identify the most effective and affordable strategies for the recovery of the Romanian economy, are extremely beneficial, but we must have the capacity to adapt them to the existing reality both nationally and globally.

Résumé :
Abstract Aluminum profiles are increasingly used in the manufacture of lightweight components for electric vehicles. Stretch forming is a key operation for producing extrusion-based components, owing to its volume production capabilities. However, traditional stretch forming is characterized by limited flexibility and high tooling costs, which makes it less attractive in today’s dynamic market demanding rapid adaptation solutions. In this research, a new 3D reconfigurable multi-piece tooling for a recently developed novel flexible stretch forming process was proposed to improve the flexibility. The new tooling concept is realized by dividing the unified 3D die into multiple adjustable pieces. Each unit includes an adjustable “bottom holder” and an adjustable “L-shape” bracket insert with a curved surface installed on the bottom holder. By controlling the positions of the array of L-shape brackets and holders, a wide range of reconfigurable tooling curvatures can be achieved for customized 3D forming. Using rectangular, hollow AA6082 profiles in T4 temper, the new tooling strategy has been verified, demonstrating its good capability for producing different part configurations. Looking forward, this reconfigurable tooling concept has demonstrated great potential in terms of dimensional accuracy and springback compensation in stretch forming, enabling customized, cost-effective, and rapid development of aluminum extrusion components.

Résumé :
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face significant challenges in navigating the complex landscape of innovation and funding. This paper presents Project Eskalator, an integrated framework designed to bridge the gap between innovation management and funding strategies for SMEs. Through a mixed-methods approach involving surveys, case studies, and expert interviews across diverse industry sectors, we examined the interplay between innovation potential identification, agile business model development, and strategic funding acquisition. Our findings reveal that SMEs adopting an integrated approach to innovation and funding demonstrate higher rates of successful product launches, improved market adaptation, and enhanced resilience during economic uncertainties. The framework emphasizes adaptive business models, rapid prototyping, and lean methodologies suitable for resource-constrained environments. Additionally, we found that SMEs developing concise, compelling narratives around their innovative ideas were significantly more successful in securing stakeholder buy-in and accessing diverse funding sources. Project Eskalator represents a paradigm shift in how SMEs approach the dual challenges of innovation and funding, enabling them to break the paralysis of indecision and navigate the complex innovation-funding landscape with greater confidence and success.

Résumé :
There has been an increasingly well-documented, rapid rise in tobacco production over the last couple of decades in Mazowe, Zimbabwe, despite growing public health concerns about lung cancer and nicotine’s addictive capacities in the wealthier countries of the West – even affecting the South African market. This has been accompanied by a shift away from its production almost completely on large-scale farms towards predominantly small-scale farms. To date, less consideration has been given to the implications of climate change for tobacco production. Given the hopes that it can make a serious contribution to poverty reduction and food security, it is of increasing importance to understand these implications, to identify the most relevant and/or effective adaptation options and to assess the viability of their successful adoption. This paper presents a fine-grained, qualitative bottom-up analysis of the implications for commercial tobacco production of climate change impacts in Zimbabwe.

Yahav, Shlomo, John Brake, and Orna Halevy. Pre-natal Epigenetic Adaptation to Improve Thermotolerance Acquisition and Performance of Fast-growing Meat-type Chickens. United States Department of Agriculture, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2009.7592120.bard.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
: The necessity to improve broiler thermotolerance and performance led to the following hypothesis: (a) thethermoregulatory-response threshold for heat production can be altered by thermal manipulation (TM) during incubation so as to improve the acquisition of thermotolerance in the post-hatch broiler;and (b) TM during embryogenesis will improve myoblast proliferation during the embryonic and post-hatch periods with subsequent enhanced muscle growth and meat production. The original objectives of this study were as follow: 1. to assess the timing, temperature, duration, and turning frequency required for optimal TM during embryogenesis; 2. to evaluate the effect of TM during embryogenesis on thermoregulation (heat production and heat dissipation) during four phases: (1) embryogenesis, (2) at hatch, (3) during growth, and (4) during heat challenge near marketing age; 3. to investigate the stimulatory effect of thermotolerance on hormones that regulate thermogenesis and stress (T₄, T₃, corticosterone, glucagon); 4. to determine the effect of TM on performance (BW gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, carcass yield, breast muscle yield) of broiler chickens; and 5. to study the effect of TM during embryogenesis on skeletal muscle growth, including myoblast proliferation and fiber development, in the embryo and post-hatch chicks. This study has achieved all the original objectives. Only the plasma glucagon concentration (objective 3) was not measured as a result of technical obstacles. Background to the topic: Rapid growth rate has presented broiler chickens with seriousdifficulties when called upon to efficiently thermoregulate in hot environmental conditions. Being homeotherms, birds are able to maintain their body temperature (Tb) within a narrow range. An increase in Tb above the regulated range, as a result of exposure to environmental conditions and/or excessive metabolic heat production that often characterize broiler chickens, may lead to a potentially lethal cascade of irreversible thermoregulatory events. Exposure to temperature fluctuations during the perinatal period has been shown to lead to epigenetic temperature adaptation. The mechanism for this adaptation was based on the assumption that environmental factors, especially ambient temperature, have a strong influence on the determination of the “set-point” for physiological control systems during “critical developmental phases.” In order to sustain or even improve broiler performance, TM during the period of embryogenesis when satellite cell population normally expand should increase absolute pectoralis muscle weight in broilers post-hatch. Major conclusions: Intermittent TM (39.5°C for 12 h/day) during embryogenesis when the thyroid and adrenal axis was developing and maturing (E7 to E16 inclusive) had a long lasting thermoregulatory effect that improved thermotolerance of broiler chickens exposed to acute thermal stress at market age by lowering their functional Tb set point, thus lowering metabolic rate at hatch, improving sensible heat loss, and significantly decreasing the level of stress. Increased machine ventilation rate was required during TM so as to supply the oxygen required for the periods of increased embryonic development. Enhancing embryonic development was found to be accomplished by a combination of pre-incubation heating of embryos for 12 h at 30°C, followed by increasing incubation temperature to 38°C during the first 3 days of incubation. It was further facilitated by increasing turning frequency of the eggs to 48 or 96 times daily. TM during critical phases of muscle development in the late-term chick embryo (E16 to E18) for 3 or 6 hours (39.5°C) had an immediate stimulatory effect on myoblast proliferation that lasted for up to two weeks post-hatch; this was followed by increased hypertrophy at later ages. The various incubation temperatures and TM durations focused on the fine-tuning of muscle development and growth processes during late-term embryogenesis as well as in post-hatch chickens.

Résumé :
Public employment services have a crucial role in the search for quality jobs, worker placement, labor market adaptation, and mitigating impacts during economic transitions. Globally, these services have been leveraging on digital technologies to transform, and those in Latin America and the Caribbean are no exception. These technologies are enabling the creation of new channels to expand outreach and service delivery, centralizing, and sharing data, facilitating collaboration, and improving processes. However, rapid technological advancements also pose risks in terms of access and equity. For instance, improper use of artificial intelligence (AI) may exacerbate existing labor market inequalities. Therefore, it is essential for public employment services to harness the potential of digital technologies while mitigating associated risks. To address these challenges, these institutions must consider five key dimensions. Firstly, they need to be aware of the strategic implications of digital technologies. Secondly, they need to manage the impact of technology on their administrative operations. Thirdly, they must effectively utilize technology in their interactions with the public. Fourthly, they should undergo organizational changes to enhance agility and adopt different structures, skills, and cultures. Lastly, they must grow into their role of data processing organizations to take advantage of new opportunities and tackle new challenges. This document provides relevant information on the opportunities and challenges of digitalization in public employment services in Latin America and the Caribbean across these dimensions, as well as their level of digital maturity. The data and results presented in this study are based on a survey conducted by the IDB's SEALC Network in 2019, which was expanded in 2022 to include fifteen countries in the region. Additionally, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the digitalization efforts of public employment services in the region is evaluated. This information is relevant for public employment services as it enables them to identify strengths and weaknesses in their digital transformation processes.

Résumé :
The fourth installment of the Making Healthcare Safer (MHS) series of reviews marks nearly a quarter century’s progress in efforts to meet the challenge of reducing and, ultimately, eliminating preventable patient harm. Throughout this patient safety journey, the MHS series synthesizes and disseminates evidence on the effectiveness of patient safety practices (PSPs). In 2022, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) launched work on the fourth iteration of the MHS Report (MHS IV). Topics were prioritized for inclusion in the MHS IV series based on a modified Delphi technique used by a Technical Expert Panel (TEP) that met in December 2022. The MHS IV Prioritization Report provides further details about how the TEP was engaged in prioritizing topics for inclusion in MHS IV.1 The MHS IV series consists of two rapid evidence product types (i.e., rapid reviews and rapid responses) to accommodate providing multiple evidence summaries within a two-year period. The type was determined by considering the preliminary body of evidence. Investigators made strategic choices about which processes to abridge to yield the most relevant search results within the topic scope. However, the adaptations made for expediency may limit the certainty and generalizability of the findings from the review, particularly in areas with a large literature base. In the first option year of this project, we completed a total of seven rapid reviews and six rapid responses.2 In the second option year of this project, we completed a total of 6 rapid reviews and 1 rapid response. Rapid reviews (which are streamlined systematic reviews): Patient monitoring systems to prevent failure to rescue Use of structured handoff protocols for intrahospital within unit transitions Supply chain disruption monitoring programs Examining the impact of implementing high reliability organization principles on patient safety outcomes Programs for responding to harms experienced by patients during clinical care Interventions to prevent nonventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia Rapid response (which is a brief narrative review): Acute care nursing staff shortages that compromise patient-to-nurse ratios The purpose of this report is to provide a summary of the TEP’s judgements about which PSPs are ready for widespread implementation and their rationale based on findings from the rapid reviews and rapid responses completed in the second year of MHS IV.

Detges, Adrien, André Mueller, and Michelle Helene Reuter. Climate vulnerability and security in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin. Adelphi research gemeinnützige GmbH, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.55317/casc026.

Résumé :
Climate change will affect millions of people in the Euphrates-Tigris basin. It will add to other foreseeable challenges in a region that is undergoing rapid demographic changes and development, that is grappling with political instability, and that struggles to manage its shared water resources sustainably. Resisting and preparing for the adverse impacts of climate change will be essential for the riparian countries Iraq, Turkey, Syria, and Iran. Their chances to do so successfully over the coming years will largely depend on their ability to build and bolster strong institutions and a healthy economy, to provide a safe environment for their citizens, to carefully manage their natural resources, and to maintain peaceful and productive relations among each other. Looking ahead to the year 2050, this paper develops three possible scenarios for the Euphrates-Tigris basin, each one marked by distinct vulnerability conditions and opportunities for the basin countries to withstand the effects of climate change. Based on these distinctions, the paper identifies scenario-specific climate risks for water resources, lives, and livelihoods, as well as possible implications for migration, political stability, and cross-border water cooperation. The paper builds on CASCADES research which examines the impacts of climate change on trade, investments, sustainable development and human security in the European neighbourhood, with a view to inform European policies and improve interregional cooperation. The scenarios presented in this paper have been co-developed with 30 experts from the region, representing the fields of climate change adaptation, natural resource management, conflict prevention, and other relevant areas, to allow for a multidisciplinary perspective on major challenges and possible solutions. The methodological approach is described in the appendix. The scenarios presented here are not exhaustive. Rather, they display a diverse set of possible future challenges and opportunities to inform strategic planning, promote flexible policies, and encourage a range of adaptation measures by the basin countries and their European partners.
