Intermittent fasting (IF) has been gaining popularity as a means of losing weight. The Ramadan fast (RF) is a form of IF practiced by millions of adult Muslims globally for a whole lunar month every year. It entails a major shift from normal eating patterns to exclusive nocturnal eating. RF is a state of intermittent liver glycogen depletion and repletion. The earlier (morning) part of the fasting day is marked by dominance of carbohydrate as the main fuel, but lipid becomes more important towards the afternoon and as the time for breaking the fast at sunset (iftar) gets closer. The cornerstone for treating obesity remains diet and lifestyle, with the ultimate goal being normalising those parameters that are associated with ill health, for example hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance. Because obesity predominantly develops due to a mismatch between energy intake and utilisation, this thesis looked at the effects of dietary interventions upon Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) and substrate oxidation. Résumé :
Abstract Several corrosion monitoring techniques are used in the oil and gas industry as a part of corrosion management programs. Some of these techniques include weight loss coupons, linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes, electrical resistance (ER) probes, electrochemical noise (ECN) probes, etc. One of the limitations of conventional corrosion monitoring technique is that they only report general corrosion, not pitting. However, pitting is the form of corrosion which commonly leads to failure in oil and gas systems. Thus finding and evaluating better monitoring technology for pitting c

Résumé :
Abstract Corrosion is a major concern in transmission pipelines that transport captured CO2. While dry CO2 is noncorrosive, significant corrosion has been reported in dense phase CO2 with trace amounts of water and impurities such as O2, H2S, SOx, and NOx. The aim of this work is to improve our understanding of the physicochemical aspects on the corrosion of carbon steels in the high-pressure environments associated with CO2 transmissions pipelines. The effect of flow on the corrosion of X65 carbon steel was investigated in a series of autoclave tests with different combinations of impurity co

Résumé :
Abstract The harsh effects and costly losses due to erosion-corrosion in the oil and gas industry have made studying aspects of erosion, corrosion, and, the additive of the two, erosion-corrosion a high priority in recent years. Corrosion and the combined effects of erosion-corrosion have been more prevalent in recent years primarily as a result of a combination of improved oil collection techniques where CO2 is injected into the reservoirs, as well as increased development of crude with higher quantities of H2S and CO2, from drilling in deeper wells.1 Corrosion prediction has become more impo

Résumé :
Around one third of the weight of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, and around a third of crop calories are lost to the food system during livestock production. Meanwhile, the global food system causes significant environmental impacts and around 800 million people are undernourished. This building block examines the following aspects of food loss and waste: mainstream definitions and alternative understandings, global statistics, and ‘hierarchies’ for prevention and treatment.

Objectives: The objectives of the proposal were to study how potassium (K) enters the berry and in what tissues it accumulates, to determine what is the sensitive phenological stage that is responsive to K, to study the influence of K on sugar translocation, to determine if K has effects on expression of genes in source and sink organs and to study applied aspects of the responses to K at the vineyard level. During the research it was realized that K acts externally so a major part of the original objectives had to be deserted and new ones, i.e. the role of K in enhancing water loss from the b
