Résumé :
There are abundant examples of negative assessments of cultic honors to Roman emperors by nineteenth- and twentieth-century researchers. In the minds of historians raised in modern societies, in which monotheistic Abrahamic religions usually reign supreme, this is a completely understandable a priori approach; nevertheless, it hinders a correct understanding of Roman society in antiquity. This paper examines the need to provide a complex answer to the question of whether the inhabitants of the Roman world really believed in the divinity of their rulers. A complex answer to the question can onl

AbstractNumerous solutions have been proposed to slow the accelerating loss of biodiversity. Thinking about biodiversity conservation has not, however, been incorporated into the everyday activities of most individuals and nations. Conservation scientists need to refocus on strategies that reshape ethical attitudes to nature and encourage pro-environmental thinking and lifestyles. Religions are central to basic beliefs and ethics that influence people's behaviour and should be considered more seriously in biodiversity discourse. Using data from the World Religion Database we conducted an analy

Th e aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the level of modernization and the most important demographic indicators of religions. Correlation analyses, which helped us to draw the conclusion, were produced by Statistica for Windows. Our study is based on statistical publications on national level. Hungary was one of the most diversified countries in terms of religions before World War I. Croatia was different from Hungary in terms of religious diversity, as the majority of its population was Roman Catholic and 25% Orthodox. First, we examine the relationship between religion

Summary When dealing with Isis, Serapis and the other members of the so-called ‘gens isiaca’, scholars have hesitated whether to emphasize their (indisputable) historico-geographic origin in the Nile valley or their (no less indisputable) character as Graeco-Roman cults. We thus find these deities referred to as ‘Egyptian’, ‘Graeco-Egyptian’, ‘Graeco-Roman’, ‘Greek’, ‘Roman’ and, again, ‘Oriental’, ‘Orientalized Roman’, and so on. Each of these definitions is evidently partial, which is one reason for the growing preference for the less specific terms ‘Isiac gods’ and ‘Isiac cults’. Yet even t

Roma triumphans and the birth of antiquarianism : Biondo Flavio and Andrea Mantegna. Biondo Flavio completed his Roma triumphans, the foundation of the Renaissance antiquarian movement, in 1459 while in Mantua. The work was immediately successful : in a letter written in December 1460 to Ludovico Gonzaga, Biondo himself reported that it was already being read and copied in courts all over Europe. First published in Mantua in 1473 and continually reprinted from the late 15th century to the mid-16th century, Roma triumphans rapidly became a crucial point of reference for the study of Roman antiq

Double and multiple religious belonging (MRB) is one of the most popular fields of research in Religious Studies and Theology in the West. It is curious that Russia does not utilize the notion of MRB being acquainted just with the notion of double belief (Rus. dvoeverie ). The latter has almost nothing in common with double and multiple religious belonging in the Western sense of the word. So, what is MRB? Although the term does not seem to be ambiguous it does not mean a complete form of belonging to two or more religious traditions, it rather implies formal belonging to one religion and some

Theories of how religion shapes business tend to focus on dominant religious institutions. What happens in the case of minority religions, where the alignment of religion with other dominant institutions may be weak at best? To answer this question, I first develop an emergentist account of religion, explaining how macro-level conditioning shapes meso- and micro-level interactions in religious contexts, leading to either structural change or stasis in business contexts. I illustrate this account by examining how Roman Catholicism as a minority religion shapes corporate capitalism in two cities
