Résumé :
Background: Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is fatal if untreated; the drugs to treat it are toxic making its management difficult and diagnosis complex. Nwoya district has a long history of sleeping-sickness dating back to pre-colonial times. The civil war of 1986-2008 displaced many who upon return complained of cattle and dogs dying of unknown causes alongside increased tsetse flies infestation hence, the needs for the study. Methods: We enrolled local 3,040 pupils and recorded their social-demographic characteristics and access to different domesticated animals/fowls in their homes. Screening for HAT using the card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis (CATT) was performed; positive individuals had their titres determined, followed by microscopy and loop mediated isothermal amplification analysis (LAMP). R was used for analysis where associations were sought between dependent and independent variables. Any factor with P-value <0.05 was taken as statistically significant. Results: HAT serological prevalence of 1.2% (95% CI 0.8-1.6) was obtained, 58.3% being boys while 41.7% were girls with titres ranging from 1:2 - 1:16. Two schools alone, constituted 47% of the CATT positive cases. Pupils who came from homes with dogs were more likely to be CATT/Trypanosoma brucei gambiense positive; (adjusted odds ratio = 3.12, 95% CI 1.41-6.99 & p=0.005). Conclusions: Though no parasites were detected, with prevalence of CATT positive at 1.2%, active surveillance in the district is still recommended. CATT positive cases needs follow-ups were immune trypanolysis test done to ascertain their exposure.

Résumé :
Nursing assistants (NAs) working in nursing homes (NHs) are at higher risk for work-related musculoskeletal symptoms (WRMSs) than their counterparts working in other health care settings. Worldwide, NAs have ranked shoulders in the top three body parts at risk of WRMSs. However, factors associated with their shoulder WRMSs are currently unknown. The aim of this study was to identify these associated risk factors among NAs working in NHs. 440 NAs from 47 nursing homes (with 60–90% response rate from each nursing home), recruited by convenience sampling, participated in this cross-sectional study in 2014–2015. A validated and reliable questionnaire was used for data collection. Information on demographic, job content questionnaire (JCQ), perceived physical exertion (PE), workstyle, ergonomic and manual handling knowledge and other work-related factors was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. 53% of the participants reported experiencing with WRMSs in their shoulders. Nine associated factors of shoulder WRMSs were identified using bivariate analysis. With the adjustment of age and gender using multivariable logistic regression, body mass index (OR = .931, 95% CI [.874–.991]), job title of health workers (OR = 2.72, 95% CI [1.18–6.25]) and workstyle-working through pain (OR = 1.06, 95% CI [1.01–1.11]) remained as predictors. Effort should be directed at integrating “workstyle intervention” into lifestyle physical activity training for NAs.

Résumé :
Purpose Emotion regulation (ER) has been identified as an important factor influencing psychological and health problems of adult populations. The purpose of this paper is to address a gap in the literature by examining available evidence relating to the use of ER strategies (avoidance, problem solving, reappraisal, rumination and suppression) on the well-being of older people (OP). Design/methodology/approach A systematic search for peer-reviewed articles published from 1985 to 2015 was conducted in PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline, Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Collections and ASSIA and resulted in 1746 titles. In total, 20 studies met full inclusion criteria (the cross-sectional association between well-being and ER was reported, participants were 60 years or older, without cognitive impairment and the article was written in English, Portuguese or Spanish). Findings Rumination was found to be the ER strategy most strongly associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression in OP populations, while mixed result were found for avoidance, problem solving, suppression and reappraisal. Research limitations/implications Given the scarcity of research examining the association between ER and positive psychological concepts only a conclusion about ER and negative mood measures could be made. Questions for future research on ER and well-being in OP are proposed. Originality/value This paper addresses a significant gap in the literature regarding the use of ER strategies in older adults.

Among the studied taxa, Mentha longifolia has the smallest pollen grains, and Ocimum basillicium possesses the largest ones. The main shape of pollen grains in the most taxa suboblate, oblate – spheroidal or prolate–spheroidal. However subprolate are recorded for Salvia elegans. The grains are hexacolpate in all taxa, but in S. farinacea octacolpate pollen was found. Three distinct exine sculpturing exist, reticulate–perforate the common type, also reticulate, granulate and bi-reticulate. However, the fine details are characteristic to differentiate between the pollen species. Exine is microreticulate in case of S. elegans and S. farinacea, but reticulate-foveolate in case of S. splendens. As well as, the presence of holes on colpus membrane ornamentation can be used as a taxonomic tool for sectional division between. S. elegans from S. splendens is clearly distinct from the other taxa examined by its characteristic pollen morphology.

Résumé :
Introduction: Telehealth (TH) uses telecommunication technology (e.g. internet, telephone, mobile or smart phone) as a cost-effective way to provide healthcare delivery for hypertension (HTN) control. However, effectiveness of TH on HTN control among disparate populations is unclear. Methods: We conducted a systematic review using the Cochrane methods to assess effectiveness of TH for HTN control in disparate people diagnosed with HTN. Participants were considered disparate based on Healthy People 2020 definitions. Outcomes included: 1) HTN control; 2) blood pressure change; 3) medication adherence; and 4) utilization of care. Multiple databases were searched for published articles from 2000-July 2016 without restrictions on study design, language, location, or outcomes. The search garnered 1766 titles. Following screening, 18 primary studies were included that noted at least one outcome from TH use in disparate people with HTN. Results: Thirteen randomized control trials, 4 pre-post, and 1 cross-sectional studies were included. Most studies (61%) were conducted in USA. Follow-up varied from 28-730 days and total sample included 14,136 adults. Studies reported disparate populations by social and community context (89%), education (28%), income (33%), health and healthcare (39%), neighborhood and built environment (6%). TH was utilized in primary care including federally qualified health centers, community clinics, rural and urban small practices, homes, or in mixed settings. Most TH interventions were multi-component, included disease monitoring (83.3%), and/or self-management education (55.5%) implemented by nurses, pharmacists, or community health educators. TH used internet (55.5%) and/or phone (61.1%) or text message (22.2%) to deliver healthcare securely. Physicians reviewed reports as needed. Compared to usual care (UC), 14 of 18 studies found improvement in HTN control or reduced blood pressure. Of these, 9 of the 14 reported on HTN control and 3 of the 9 found improved control (p< 0.05). Of the 12 studies reporting on change in blood pressure, 9 found a significant reduction in either SBP or DBP (p<0.05). Eight of the 18 studies reported on hypertension medication adherence and 2 of the 8 studies found a significant improvement in adherence (p<0.05). Frequency of HTN assessment was reported and significantly improved for TH in 2 of 18 studies (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, TH showed promise to improve blood pressure control, and other health outcomes in disparate people with HTN. These results may inform healthcare providers, health plans, and decision makers of the potential for TH to improve HTN control among disparate populations.

Booysen, Juann. « A critical analysis of the financial and social obligations imposed on sectional owners in sectional title schemes, as well as their enforcement ». Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/86255.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Thesis (LLD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Over the years sectional ownership satisfied the psychological need of many South Africans to acquire home-ownership and it is currently estimated that there are more than 780 000 sectional title units throughout South Africa. The concept of sectional ownership consists of three elements, namely individual ownership of a section (residential or commercial); joint ownership of the common parts of the sectional title scheme and membership of the body corporate which governs the sectional title community. Sectional ownership is therefore a unique statutory institution with its own characteristics. An imperative of every sectional title scheme is to strive for financial stability, happiness and harmony in an intensified, diverse community where the objects of ownership, the individual units, are physically interdependent. The Sectional Titles Act 95 of 1986, as amended, therefore imposes numerous financial and social obligations on sectional owners. These obligations require each owner to give up a certain degree of freedom that he might otherwise enjoy in separate, privately owned property. Ultimately the success of a sectional title scheme will depend upon the necessary co-operation and support of its members for compliance with these obligations. Since non-compliance can destroy the financial stability and social harmony in a sectional title scheme, effective procedures for the enforcement of these financial and social obligations are essential. Accordingly, effective sanctions are a sine qua non for a financially viable and socially successful sectional title scheme. This thesis provides a critical analysis of the various financial and social obligations that are imposed on sectional owners, as well as the measures available for their enforcement. It will become evident that the sanctions in the South African sectional title legislation for non-compliance with these obligations are conspicuously few and far between. It is generally accepted that the Sectional Titles Act 95 of 1986 does not have sharp enough „teeth‟ to deal effectively with the non-compliance of these obligations. Consequently, the thesis will also focus on sanctions that are used in foreign jurisdictions to enforce sectional owners‟ financial and social obligations, with the aim to identify sanctions that may be adopted in the South African context to render the enforcement of these obligations more efficient and effective. In conclusion it will be recommended that the only manner in which financial stability and social harmony can be restored in a troubled sectional title scheme is to introduce legislation which allows the body corporate as a last resort to exclude a persistent offender who makes it impossible for the other sectional owners to share the sectional owners‟ community with him or her temporarily from this community.

The title of the final section is ‘Reproducing and Re-creating’. Considering camps as home places - places where people feed, care for and house each other, means to see them as sites where social reproduction takes place. This raises a number of questions, for example concerning the balance between social reproduction and more confrontational forms of political contestations (as well as the highly contested expectations about who should participate in each of these functions). Because they can become a temporary home for many people, questions of physical, psychological, and symbolic safety (especially for women and minority groups) have frequently been the cause of tension within camps. How do campers struggle to realize some of their political hopes within the space of the camp - not just their ‘big’ hopes for a more just, equal and sustainable society; but their hopes for a transformation of everyday social relations between people?

Résumé :
In this final section the author returns to pairing, the “two” of this chapter title. He hopes to show how you can understand waiting even more clearly by comparing it with emotional experiences that entail not pairs, but the single individual (the “one” of the chapter title) or a trio of individuals (the “three” of the chapter title). One emotion that are associated with “one” is boredom (though depression could be as well). The preeminent emotion associated with “three” is jealousy. The author begins with boredom, an emotion that he was convinced, before he toyed with this book, was the very same thing as waiting. It’s not. This final chapter also aims to link Holding On to the author’s two previous books, Boredom: A Lively History (2011) and Jealousy (2014). Holding On, you might say, is the final part of its own trio.

Résumé :
This chapter describes Article XXII of the Oklahoma constitution, which concerns alien and corporate ownership of lands. Section 1 provides that an alien or person who is not a citizen of the United States may not directly or indirectly gain legal title to or own land in Oklahoma. An alien, however, who can show he or she has taken up bona fide (or genuine) residence in Oklahoma may acquire and hold lands during the time he or she actually resides in Oklahoma. If that resident alien ceases to be a bona fide inhabitant of Oklahoma, then he or she must dispose of those lands within five years from the time he or she is no longer a resident of the state. Meanwhile, Section 2 prevents land companies from buying rural land and prevents private corporations from buying more rural land than is necessary and proper for their operation. This provision is meant to encourage private rural home ownership.

Résumé :
We look at how Chapter 5’s ‘people ideas’ play out in practice; it is about real people talking about real jobs. Respondents described their interactions, how much was internal or external, the frequency and nature of contacts, and how much their social and work lives interpenetrated. Strongly evident in the responses is the role of different technologies in displacing face-to-face in specific contexts and settings. The trade-offs between on- and off-line encounters emerged, as did what that means for how firms conduct business and choose where to locate. A section titled Was This the Future? reports on a follow-up survey of our original interviewees in the midst of a global pandemic that tested our assumptions and arguments. With lockdowns, ‘social distancing’ and working from home as people’s ‘new normal’, was this the moment to discover that F2F wasn’t quite so important after all? The section reports both on immediate effects in their sectors, and their views on the likely longer-term impacts on how business would be done.

Résumé :
This chapter is where Dr. Kollmann’s original manuscript starts. His introduction of the fundamental aerothermodynamic principles governing the design of centrifugal (radial) compressors is not in a form that one would find in standard textbooks, vintage or modern. Dr. Kollmann essentially lists the pertinent equations in the form of a ‘crib sheet’ that an experienced engineer would consult in his or her daily work. This is not surprising because, in all likelihood, when he was writing this manuscript (or at least this part of it) Dr. Kollmann did not have access to all his papers and books. In fact, the authors have a suspicion (a rather strong one from the cover page, as shown in the title page of the present book) that Dr. Kollmann wrote this section while he was actually in Allied custody or at ‘home supervision’.

Résumé :
Chapter 8 focuses on student meanings of gender as found in a dance studio course titled “Embodying Pluralism.” Since 2008 the course has fulfilled Temple University’s general education requirement in race and diversity. The study is based on 348 students’ Blackboard gender discussions in seventeen sections of the course over 2008 to 2014. Prompted by a reading on gender in children’s dance, students write a 300-word response to this (or similar) question: “What messages about gender did you receive as a child…?” This prompt encourages description and memoir. In its concern with lived experience, gender, ethics and human possibility, the study aligns philosophically with feminist phenomenology. Qualitative analysis procedures were adapted from phenomenologist Max van Manen’s (2014) methods for isolating themes. As well as highlighting students’ lived experiences of gender, the study illuminates participant theories (beliefs, assumptions, critical perspectives) and hopes for the future of gender in dance and life. Research findings are presented thematically, followed by dialogue with pertinent theory and reflection. Experiential themes include dance in/and the family, dancing is for girls, shall we not dance, outside the box, and communities of practice.
