Rapid and robust characterization of large earthquakes in terms of their spatial extent and temporal duration is of high importance for disaster mitigation and early warning applications. Backtracking of seismic P-waves was successfully used by several authors to image the rupture process of the great Sumatra earthquake (26.12.2004) using short period and broadband arrays. We follow here an approach of Walker et al. to backtrack and stack broadband waveforms from global network stations using traveltimes for a global Earth model to obtain the overall spatio-temporal development of the energy r

Neural networks are extremely versatile tools, as evidenced by their widespread adoption into many fields in the sciences and beyond, including the geosciences. In seismology neural networks have been primarily used to automatically detect and discriminate seismic signals within time-series data, as well as provide location estimates for their sources. However, as neural network research has significantly progressed over the past three decades, so too have its applications in seismology. Such applications now include earthquake early warning systems based on smartphone data collected from large

Quantifying uncertainty in models derived from observed seismic data is an important issue in exploration geophysics. In this research we examine the geological structure of the subsurface of the Earth using controlled source seismology which consists of data recorded in time and the distance between acoustic sources and receivers. There are a number of inversion tools to map data into depth models, but a full exploration of the uncertainty of such models is rarely done because of the lack of robust strategies available for the analysis of large non-linear complex systems. Seismology is the study of earthquakes and the Earth’s internal structure using seismic waves. Traditional seismology is constrained by the timing and location of seismic sources, and by the location of seismometers with which energy from the sources are recorded. Improvements in the global seismometer networks have reduced the latter constraint. Furthermore, recent advances into Seismic Interferometry (SI) have enabled detailed information about the Earth’s interior to be obtained using ambient seismic noise, hence even in areas with low natural seismicity. This particular generalization is considerably more difficult to compute and to apply than its predecessor. The detection and identification of low yield explosions requires seismic stations at regional distances (1500 km).
