Résumé :
This paper presents a new type of damper using electro-rheological (ER) magnetic fluid for improving magnetic fluid damper and ER fluid damper. Silicone oil based magnetic fluid dispersing 10 nm size of magnetite, silicone oil based ER fluid dispersing 2 nm to 50 nm size of smectite and a mixture, that is, ER magnetic fluid have been used in a piston type damper. Dynamic visco-elasticities of these fluids have been measured by considering chain (cluster) formations. Next, frequency characteristics of transmissibility (magnification factor) and phase in damper have been compared with those fluids under magnetic field, electric field and both fields. The Voigt or Maxwell model can be applied in those dampers depending on amplitude. ER magnetic fluid has showed the decrease of amplitude ratios at resonance point and higher frequency at any amplitude under both magnetic and electric fields as low-pass filter.

Résumé :
This paper presents an analytical model for computing the force-displacement loops of the passive hydraulic dampers filled with shear thinning fluid when the damper is subjected to a sinusoidal excitation. The analytical model is developed on the basis of Navier-Stokes equations by considering the rheological behavior of silicone oil. The obtained computational results agree well with those by experimental measurements, and both of them suggests that viscous friction, fluid compressibility, and friction loss are the three major damping mechanisms of a hydraulic damper with shear thinning fluid. The damper in a low-frequency and large-amplitude vibration may have bigger viscous damping coefficient than that when it is in a high-frequency and small-amplitude vibration, which suggests that a hydraulic damper filled with shear thinning fluid can satisfy the requirement of the isolation system better.

Résumé :
A shear mode magnetorheological (MR) elastomer damper is designed and manufactured, in which the MR elastomer is made by mixing RTV silicone, carbonyl iron particles and silicone oil, and solidifying under magnetic field. A flexible cantilever rotor system with single disk is constructed, and the controllability, effectiveness and stability of vibration control for the imbalance response of the rotor system using the MR damper are experimentally studied. From the test, it is found that as the strength of applied magnetic field increases, the damping and stiffness of the damper are increased; the critical speeds of the rotor system supported on the MR damper is increased distinctly, and the vibration at two critical speeds are restrained; the on-off control method may be used to control the rotor vibration while passing through the two critical speeds. The study shows that the shear mode MR elastomer damper is suitable for active vibration control of flexible rotor.

Résumé :
Bi-directional-cylinder viscous fluid dampers are studied numerically. Based on the power-law characteristic of silicone oil,the flow pattern of silicone oil is analyzed, the non-Newtonian fluid power-law model’s influence on the energy dissipation characteristic and the damping resistance of viscous dampers is discussed, and the calculation formulas are presented. The damping force of the viscous damper samples is simulated by professional CFD software based on the dynamic mesh model, Based on comprehensive analysis of the results, the experiential design method of large-tonnage-damping-force viscous fluid dampers is finally established. On the other hand, the numerical simulation curves are in good agreement with experimental curves, which validates the feasibility of numerical method in the preliminary design of bi-directional-cylinder viscous fluid dampers. The numerical method helps to enhance the engineering precision, guide the design, and shorten the development cycle.

Résumé :
Dampers are widely applied to protect devices or human body from severe impact or harmful vibration circumstances. Considering that dampers with low velocity exponent have advantages in energy absorption, they have been widely used in antiseismic structures and shock buffering. Non-Newtonian fluid with strong shear-thinning effect is commonly adopted to achieve this goal. To obtain the damping mechanism and find convenient methods to design the nonlinear fluid damper, in this study, a hydraulic damper is filled with 500,000 cSt silicone oil to achieve a low velocity exponent. Drop hammer test is carried out to experimentally obtain its impact and buffering characteristics. Then a coupling model is built to analyze its damping mechanism, which consists of a model of impact system and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Results from the coupling model can be consistent with the experiment results. Simulation method can help design non-Newtonian fluid dampers more effectively.

Résumé :
The article presents an example of research results of the mechanical vibrations of the internal combustion engine with a viscous torsional vibration damper of the crankshaft for different values of the viscosity of silicone oil. A comparison of the crankshaft torsional vibration and the transverse vibration motor body was made. There was proposed the use of the information contained in the transverse vibration signals in order to determine the changes in the technical condition of the viscous damper (changes in viscosity of silicone oil fillingthe damper). Accepting the argument which assumes that there exists the coupling vibration and torsional shaft bent in transverse vibration signals, there should appear symptoms associated with changes in the torsional vibrations. In order to prove this thesis there was conducted active research experiment. Measurements of transients during engine acceleration were made. There was presented the example of the results of measurements of the crankshaft torsional vibrationand the transverse vibration of the motor body.

Résumé :
The crankshaft of today’s internal combustion engines with high performance output are exposed to harmful torsional oscillations originated from the unbalanced gas and inertial forces. To avoid the fatigue damage of engine components, caused by the undesired vibrations, torsional vibration dampers can be applied. Viscodampers are one type of the torsional vibration dampers, which operational fluid is silicone oil. For cost-effective R&D activities and production, finite element and finite volume numerical discretization methods based calculation techniques must be involved into the engineering work supported by the modern computer technology. The aim of this paper is to provide an insight into the multidisciplinary design and development process of visco-dampers in vehicle industry applications. Four different examples as structural, fatigue, CFD analyses and structural optimization have been introduced in the present work. It turned out from the static structural and fatigue analyses, that the investigated damper has safety factor over the limit for both static structural and fatigue analyses, so it is suitable for the given load conditions. In the structural optimization process 34.36% mass reduction has been achieved. According to the coupled fluid dynamic and heat transfer simulations a rather stagnating air zone evolved between the engine and the damper during the operation, which can cause efficiency reduction of cooling fins mounted onto the housing. In light of the numerical results, the suitable damper position has been determined for the highest heat transfer.

Résumé :
A basic experiment for the gap flow in a closed piston - cylinder system of ER fluid was carried out with regard to engineering application to dampers. The purpose of this study is to gain system characteristics and to elucidate flow behaviors of ER fluid in the piston–cylinder system; the model damper. Pressure, which is the system characteristic, was examined in the present study. The test fluid was a smectite ER fluid in silicone oil base of the 3wt% particle dispersion concentration. In the apparatus the piston moves in the vertical direction at a given speed. Theoretical formula of pressure difference is considered by the one-dimensional analysis of the ER flow in the gap of cylinder. It was shown that the response of the pressure was retarded with strong electric field. In comparison with the theoretical estimation and experimental value, the theoretical pressure difference was in good agreement with experimental data. For a sake of giving an insight to flow phenomena, visualization was also achieved using model Newtonian fluid in the piston-cylinder system, and shown that vorticity generated at the rear corner of the piston plays an important role for the pressure characteristic.

Résumé :
Supplemental dissipation plays a vital role in reducing structural damage, repair costs, and downtime due to earthquakes. A hybrid dissipation mechanism has been developed to offer repeatable and consistent energy dissipation, while maintaining significant re-centring capability. This dissipation device consists of a viscous damper (VD) and a friction ring-spring (RS) combining rate-dependent dissipative behaviour of the viscous device with rate-independent dissipation and re-centring from the ring-spring. This approach, ensures simultaneous displacement reduction and increased self-centring potential. Spectral analysis of a single-degree-of-freedom structure has been carried out to outline the efficacy of the device and delineate the impact and contribution of each component to the overall device behaviour. A prototype hybrid device is tested comprising a viscous damper with silicone fluid and a ring-spring with peak design force of 26kN. These components are connected in a parallel configuration through a fixed outer shell and a moving coupled shaft. Experimental proof-of-concept testing for the hybrid device and single ring-spring includes sinusoidal displacement inputs with amplitude of 25 and 30 mm, loading frequencies of [0.25-1.75] Hz, and ring-spring pre-load of 21 and 34%. The overall device has a peak response force of 32kN at input velocities of ~200 mm/s. At this speed, ~20kN comes from the ring spring and ~12kN from the viscous damper. Further tests on the single viscous device are conducted using silicone oils with viscosities of 100, 500, and 1000 cSt and peak input velocities of [50-300] mm/s to evaluate the impact of viscosity on the damping force. These experimental tests are used to delineate the function of the individual components of the device and assess the behaviour of the hybrid combination, in comparison to the predicted analytical behaviour.

Résumé :
Cultural relics are precious properties of all humankind, the damage of which is nonresilient. In previous earthquakes, stored cultural relics have shown poor seismic performance, so effective seismic methods are urgently needed. However, due to various restrictions, traditional damping methods are not suitable for the cultural relics stored in the Palace Museum. An efficient damping method, composed of silicone damper and connecting elements, is proposed to protect these stored cultural relics. This novel damping device is very convenient to install and no change or move for the original structures is needed. It is suitable for various kinds of new and existing relic cabinets. In order to validate the effectiveness of this novel damping method, both numerical simulation and shaking table tests are carried out. Results show that this method can effectively enhance the seismic performance of relic cabinet itself and the internal cultural relics. Relic cabinets with damping devices deform significantly less than noncontrol cabinets while the inside relics also have less sliding or overturning. Overall, a damping method, designed for seismic protection of cabinet stored cultural relics, is proposed and its effectiveness has been successfully demonstrated.

Résumé :
There are not many physical models of oral and laryngeal systems for human speech movement in both computer simulators and mechanical simulators. In particular, there is no robot tongue mechanism that completely reproduces the deformation motion of the human tongue. The human tongue is an aggregate of muscles devoid of a skeleton. It only possesses a small hyoid. The purpose of this study is to develop a flexible actuator without a rigid link, aiming at the development of a tongue mechanism for a mechanical speech robot. We propose a flexible pneumatic bending actuator using thin McKibben muscles and a soft body formed by a silicone resin. We have verified its mechanical characteristics and described a control method for displacement and curvature. The elasticity/compliance of the silicone resin forming the soft body of this actuator was quantified by tensile tests. The oscillation parameters were identified, and it is suggested that the dynamic model can be described by a spring-mass-damper system. Assuming an arc-shaped deformation model, a simultaneous control system for the arc length and curvature was constructed and its effectiveness was confirmed.

Résumé :
As a candidate for the development in electrorheological (ER) materials, phosphate cellulose (PC) particles were synthesized from the phosphate–ester reaction between cellulose particles and ammonium phosphate solution prepared from six different molar concentrations of phosphoric acid. The synthesized particles were then dispersed in silicone oil to prepare the PC-based anhydrous ER fluid. The effects of electric field strength and particle concentration on the ER performance were investigated with both steady shear and dynamic oscillatory shear modes. The ER system with PC particles formed with a 2 M phosphoric acid solution exhibited the highest yield stress. A difference in the flow behavior of the PC-based ER fluids was also analyzed via the dielectric spectra using an impedance analyzer. We adapted the PC-based ER fluids to the semi-active ER damper and the examined their damping characteristics.

Résumé :
In this paper, a parametric constitutive model based on Abel dashpot is established in a simple form and with clear physical meaning to deduce the expression of dynamic mechanical modulus of MREs. Meanwhile, in consideration for the pressure stress on MREs in the experiment of shear mechanical properties or the application to vibration damper, some improvements are made on the particle chain model based on the coupled field. In addition, in order to verify the accuracy of the overall model, five groups of MREs samples based on silicone rubber with different volume fractions are prepared and the MCR51 rheometer is used to conduct the experiment of dynamic mechanical properties based on frequency and magnetic field scanning. Finally, experimental results indicate that the established model fits well with laboratory data; namely, the relationship between the dynamic modulus of MREs and changes in frequency and magnetic field is well described by the model.

Résumé :
Silicone fluids belong to the group of pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluids with complex rheological characteristics. They are considered in basic and applied researches and in a wide range of industrial applications due to their favorable physical and thermal properties. One of their specific field of applications in the automotive industry is the working fluid of viscous torsional vibration dampers. For numerical studies in the design and development phase of this damping product, it is essential to have thorough rheological knowledge and mathematical description about the silicone oil viscosity. In the present work, adopted rheological measurement results conducted on polydimethylsiloxane manufactured by Wacker Chemie with initial viscosity of 1000 Pas (AK 1 000 000 STAB silicone oil) are processed. As a result of the parameter identification by nonlinear regression, the temperature-dependent parameter curves of the Carreau–Yasuda non-Newtonian viscosity model are generated. By implementing these parameter sets into a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, a temperature- and shear-rate-dependent viscosity model of silicone fluid was tested, using transient flow and thermal simulations on elementary tube geometries in the size range of a real viscous torsional vibration damper’s flow channels and filling chambers. The numerical results of the finite volume method provide information about the developed flow processes, with especial care for the resulted flow pattern, shear rate, viscosity and timing.

Résumé :
Helical method of tube formation and Hartree-Fock SCF method modified for periodic solids have been applied in study of electronic properties of single-wall silicon nanotubes (SWSiNT), silicone sheet, and nanoribbons (SiNR). The results obtained for nanotubes in wide diameter range of different helicity types have shown that metallics are only SWSiNTs with diameter up to <6.3 Å due to the effect of curvature, which induces coupling ofσandπorbitals. From the calculated band structure results that, irrespective of helicity, the SWSiNTs of larger diameter are small-gap semiconductors with direct gap between the Dirac-like cones of (π*,π) bands. Gap of SWSiNTs is modulated by fold number of particular tubular rotational axis symmetry and exhibits an oscillatory-decreasing character with increase of the tube diameter. Oscillations are damped and gap decreases toward 0.33 eV for tube diameter≈116 Å. Irrespective of the width, the SiNRs are small-gap semiconductors, characteristic by oscillatory decreasing gap with increasing ribbon widths. The gap of SWSiNTs and SiNRs is tuneable through modulation of tube diameter or ribbon width, respectively. The SiNRs and SWSiNTs could be fully compatible with contemporary silicon-based microelectronics and could serve as natural junction and active elements in field of nonomicrotechnologies.

Résumé :
Metals in the interstellar medium (ISM) of essentially all types of galaxies are observed to be depleted compared to the expected values. The depletion is most likely due to dust condensation in, for example, cold molecular clouds and various circumstellar and interstellar environments. The relative observed metal abundances should thereby reflect the composition of the ISM dust components. We aim at identifying the most dominant dust species or types, including silicate and iron oxide grains present in the ISM, using recent observations of dust depletion of galaxies at various evolutionary stages. We use the observed elemental abundances in dust of several metals (O, S, Si, Mg, and Fe) in different environments, considering systems with different metallicities and dust content, namely damped Lyman-α absorbers (DLAs) towards quasars and the Galaxy. We derive a possible dust composition by computationally finding the statistically expected elemental abundances in dust assuming a set of key dust species with the iron content as a free parameter. Carbonaceous dust is not considered in the present study. Metallic iron (likely in the form of inclusions in silicate grains) and iron oxides are important components of the mass composition of carbon-free dust. The latter make up a significant mass fraction (~1∕4 in some cases) of the oxygen-bearing dust and there are good reasons to believe that metallic iron constitutes a similar mass fraction of dust. Wüstite (FeO) could be a simple explanation for the depletion of iron and oxygen because it is easily formed. There appears to be no silicate species clearly dominating the silicate mass, but rather a mix of iron-poor as well as iron-rich olivine and pyroxene. To what extent sulphur depletion is due to sulfides remains unclear. In general, there seems to be little evolution of the dust composition (not considering carbonaceous dust) from low-metallicity systems to the Galaxy.

Résumé :
One fiber stain measure and control system has been designed to meet the problem that the magnitude and uniformity of the fiber strain directly determine the properties and longevity of the carbon fiber continuous sucker rod during the pultrusion process. In this system, there are 2 key technologies. The first one is the sensor that is used to measure the micro bend strain of the carbon fiber during the pultrusion process, designed base on fiber micro-bend principle, using silicon film as sensitive element and fabricated by silicon integrated circuit technology and three dimensional processes. Another is the executive unit of the system: Magneto-rheological Fluids torsional damper, which is designed base on one type of intelligent material named Magneto Rheological Fluids which can change its viscosity in millisecond according to the magnetic strength around it. So this paper provides a technical means to ensure the quality of the pultrusion process applied in fabricating the carbon fiber continuous sucker rod.

Résumé :
The damping property of viscoelastic dampers is mainly based on the shear hysteretic behaviorof viscoelastic materials, so as to reduce the dynamic response of viscoelastic materials. Therefore, theviscoelastic damping properties of viscoelastic materials greatly affect the viscoelastic dampers. At present, viscoelastic materials mainly use rubber materials, but in this thesis, the excellent properties of polyurethaneelastomer materials are used to replace rubber materials and applied to viscoelastic dampers. However, purepolyurethane elastomer damping properties are related to poor performance, so it should be modified. Basedon the research of inorganic filler-modified polyurethane elastomer, the research group modified the threekinds of organic chemicals with hydroxyl silicone oil, HTPB liquid rubber and epoxy resin E-51, in the lowfrequency region of 0.025Hz-1.5Hz through the dynamic load test machine to test the dampingperformance.

Résumé :
DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a satellite-born experiment, resulting from the collaboration of Chinese, Italian, and Swiss institutions. Since December 2015, DAMPE flights at the altitude of 500 km and collects data smoothly. The detector is made of four sub-detectors: top layers of plastic scintillators, a silicon-tungsten tracker, a BGO calorimeter (32 radiation lengths), and a bottom boron-doped scintillator to detect delayed neutrons. The main goal of the experiment is the search for indirect signals of Dark Matter in the electron and photon spectra with energies up to 10 TeV. Furthermore DAMPE studies cosmic charged and gamma radiation. The calorimeter depth and the large acceptance allow to measure cosmic ray fluxes in the range from 20 GeV up to hundreds of TeV. An overview of the latest results about light component (p+He) of charged cosmic rays, gamma astronomy and electron and positron spectrum will be presented.

Résumé :
In this work a novel pneumatic artificial muscle is fabricated using golden muga silk and silicon rubber. It is assumed that the muscle force is a quadratic function of pressure. Here a single degree of freedom system is considered where a mass is supported by a spring-damper-and pneumatically actuated muscle. While the spring-mass damper is a passive system, the addition of pneumatic muscle makes the system active. The dynamic analysis of this system is carried out by developing the equation of motion which contains multi-frequency excitations with both forced and parametric excitations. Using method of multiple scales the reduced equations are developed for simple and principal parametric resonance conditions. The time response obtained using method of multiple scales have been compared with those obtained by solving the original equation of motion numerically. Using both time response and phase portraits, variation of few systems parameters have been carried out. This work may find application in developing wearable device and robotic device for rehabilitation purpose.
