This chapter describes the close relationship between the mental faculty of attention and the physical faculty of orienting, and the importance of this relationship to the construction of artificial biomimetic systems. It reviews the importance of physical orienting to natural motor behavior, which places attention management at the core of all behaviors (“orienting is acting”), and the concomitant social role of physical orienting both in expressing and revealing the focus of a mind. The article highlights the efficiency of top-down and bottom-up processing for behavioral control, using map-based saliency processing as a model, and the suitability of map-based algorithms for parallel or bespoke computation. Given this, and the similar nature of the challenges faced by artificial and natural sensorimotor systems, it is argued that attention management may be a, if not the, key component of future artificial motor control systems.

It explores how understanding our orientations and perspectives on the world as fundamentally embedded in and emerging from our bodily manner of existence allows us to begin grasping how it is not reason or intellectual reflection alone by which we can address perceptual alignments that might appear problematic to us. Habits and socio-cultural practices are not simply matters of belief or conviction held in a disembodied mind, but are embedded within our bodily perceptual orientation.

This introduction presents the concept of social justice as an idea (and ideal) linked to Enlightenment philosophies and their realization in modern democracies. The historical emergence of social psychology as a discipline is discussed in relation to twentieth-century movements for postcolonial independence and civil rights, the demise of the eugenics movement, and challenges to ideologies of ethnic hierarchy. Five principles of a social psychology of social justice for the twenty-first century are proposed, orienting empirical work toward (1) a critical ontological perspective, (2) assumption of a normative stance toward justice, (3) alliance with the subordinate, (4) analysis of resistance, and (5) commitment to public science and scientific activism. Chapters within the volume are situated in relation to six areas of inquiry: (1) critical ontologies, paradigms, and methods; (2) race and ethnicity; (3) gender and sexuality; (4) class and poverty; (5) globalization and conflict; and (6) intervention, advocacy, and social policy.

This chapter examines the social significance of potlucks. In the United States, the word potluck has come to mean a particular category of commensal events, where each participant brings a “dish to pass” to create a communal meal. As a social social event, the potluck represents a shift in both the form of the meal and the normative expectations of hospitality, away from formality and temporal sequencing. Because both emotional and material labor is shared at potlucks, people potentially construct different situated identities through these events than they might if orienting their social lives around more formal modes of entertaining. Potlucks are also about constructing temporary unities, bounded groups of informal and often heterogeneous people.

This chapter argues that the prevailing orienting concepts and tenets of contemporary philosophy of music—the centrality of aesthetic objects, the assumption of the mono-functionality of music, the paradigm of European classical music, and the spectatorialist perspective—do not provide the basis for an adequate understanding of musical improvisation. The essays calls for a more robust philosophical consideration of the gamut of improvisational activity, including the aesthetic aspects of musical improvisation, the range of musical and social skills made manifest by improvisers, and the deeper social meanings of the practice, including the implicit reference to human freedom and situated meanings that arise from the national, ethnic, racial, gendered, and socio-economic contexts in which the music arises. Such a view would be theoretically nuanced, empirically informed, phenomenologically sensitive, and ineliminably indexed to the manifold ways in which improvised music situates itself in the complex of human affairs.

Chapter 4 considers the different sensibilities that inform current conventions of ethnographic authorship. The author juxtaposes the “renegade practices” of contemporary ethnographic writing with the more disciplined traditions of standard research reporting. The rest of the chapter elaborates on the ethnographic writing process through two orienting frameworks. The first, organizational approach, emphasizes a need to communicate research results with a measure of empirical precision. This includes discussions of how to develop and organize themes, select useful illustrations, and decide on requisite background and theoretical information. The second, evocative approach, prioritizes the authorial role in communicating meaning and sentiment through effective use of voice, rhythms, textures, and imagination. The author argues that good ethnographic writing must find a productive balance between these competing dispositions. Ultimately ethnography is presented as an adverbial mode of writing that animates social life by describing not only what takes place but also how it occurs.

What do our everyday experiences and bodily movements have to do with our theological imagination? How should we draw the connection between lived experience and theology? Feminist theologians, as well as other scholars, appeal to the importance of bodily experiences and perceptions when developing claims regarding social and cultural values and argue that our actions are always meaningful. But where and how do these arguments gain traction beyond mere thinking about methods in religious studies or theological exploring of metaphors? Religious scholars and theologians need to acquire a robust grasp on how sensory perceptions and interactions are cultural and theological acts that are bodily meaning making. This book presents a method of tracing embodied experience in order to account for meaning in everyday movements and encounters by strengthening and refining the concept of “experience” through a set of analytical commitments built on Maurice Merlau-Ponty’s phenomenological concepts. The notion of bodily experience is extended to that which makes up our social and theological knowledges. Bodily perceptual experiences are ways of thinking and orienting in the world, therefore comprising theological imagination. This is demonstrated in historical and cultural comparisons where taste, touch, and emitted sounds may order normalcy, social status, or communal belonging. Constructive body theology as analytical tool is tested in feminist projects known for their explicit turn to experience and embodiment (Carter Heyward, Marcella Althaus-Reid). This book concludes with presentations of constructive possibilities that emerge when everyday bodily experience is utilized effectively as a source for religious and theological inquiries.

Comparing the radical aesthetic and social experiments undertaken by two exile intellectuals, James and Oiticica, Harris chart a desire in their work to formulate alternative theories of citizenship, wherein common reception of popular cultural forms is linked to a potentially expanded, non-exclusive polity. By carefully analyzing the materiality of the multiply-lined, multiply voiced writing of the “undocuments” that record these social experiments and relay their prophetic descriptions of and instructions for the new social worlds they wished to forge and inhabit, however, Harris argue that their projects ultimately challenge rather than seek to rehabilitate normative conceptions of citizens and polities as well as authors and artworks. James and Oiticica’s experiments recall the insurgent sociality of “the motley crew” historians Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker describe in The Many-Headed Hydra, their study of the trans-Atlantic, cross-gendered, multi-racial working class of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Reading James’s and Oiticica’s projects against the grain of Linebaugh and Rediker’s inability to find evidence of that sociality’s persistence or futurity, Harris show how James and Oiticica gravitate toward and seek to relay the ongoing renewal of dissident, dissonant social forms, which are for them always also aesthetic forms, in the barrack-yards of Port-of-Spain and the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, the assembly lines of Detroit and the streets of the New York. The formal openness and performative multiplicity that manifests itself at the place where writing and organizing converge invokes that sociality and provokes its ongoing re-invention. Their writing extends a radical, collective Afro-diasporic intellectuality, an aesthetic sociality of blackness, where blackness is understood not as the eclipse, but the ongoing transformative conservation of the motley crew’s multi-raciality. Blackness is further instantiated in the interracial and queer sexual relations, and in a new sexual metaphorics of production and reproduction, whose disruption and reconfiguration of gender structures the collaborations from which James’s and Oiticica’s undocuments emerge, orienting them towards new forms of social, aesthetic and intellectual life.

Against Sustainability responds to twenty-first-century environmental crisis not by seeking the origins of U.S. environmental problems, but by returning to the nineteenth-century literary, cultural, and scientific contexts that gave rise to many of our most familiar environmental solutions. In readings that juxtapose antebellum and contemporary writers such as Walt Whitman and Lucille Clifton, George Catlin and Louise Erdrich, and Herman Melville and A. S. Byatt, the book reconnects sustainability, recycling, and preservation with nineteenth-century U.S. contexts such as industrial farming, consumerism, slavery, and settler colonial expansion. These readings demonstrate that the paradigms explored are compromised in their attempts to redress environmental degradation because they simultaneously perpetuate the very systems that generate the degradation to begin with. Alongside the chapters that focus on defamiliarization and critique are chapters that reveal that the nineteenth century also gave rise to more unusual and provisional environmentalisms. These chapters offer alternatives to the failed paradigms of recycling and preservation, exploring Henry David Thoreau’s and Emily Dickinson’s joyful, anti-consumerist frugality and Hannah Crafts’s and Harriet Wilson’s radical pet keeping model of living with others. The coda considers zero waste and then contrasts sustainability with functional utopianism, an alternative orienting paradigm that might more reliably guide mainstream U.S. environmental culture toward transformative forms of ecological and social justice. Ultimately, Against Sustainability offers novel readings of familiar literary works that demonstrate how U.S. nineteenth-century literature compels us to rethink our understandings of the past in order to imagine other, more just and environmentally-sound futures.

This chapter provides an overview of the wide and complex territory of Community Music Therapy, orientating readers to the key events, arguments, and practices of this international movement. Characterizing CoMT as a “social movement” helps explain the particular pattern of its emergence and development, and the varying reactions to it. This also indicates how the movement critically refracts dimensions of the practice, discipline, and profession of international music therapy more generally in its late-modern phase—showing how it is adapting to the demands and opportunities of globalization, cultural plurality, economic crisis, and the restructuring and revisioning of health and social care services. In its short history CoMT has functioned variously as an inspiration for broader and more flexible practice, as a critique of traditional theory, as a platform for exploring fresh interdisciplinary theory, and as an instigator of inter-professional dialogue and dispute.

Este libro, así como lo hizo el VII Coloquio Nacional y V Internacional de Metodología de la Investigación en Ciencias Sociales, presenta a los lectores reflexiones metodológicas para indagar sobre lo interculturalidad/educativo. Se han seleccionado los textos producto de investigación, para formar parte de esta publicación y entregar a las personas interesadas perspectivas metodológicas y teóricas para pensar lo intercultural como problema social/educativo en América Latina y sus diversos modos de configuración. Por ello, retomamos como apertura los planteamientos realizados en la convocatoria al Coloquio en tanto propusieron lo que ahora este libro recoge, una mirada múltiple y diversa. La vida colectiva expresa formas múltiples de repertorios simbólicos y sociales que validan, orientan y definen cursos de pensamiento y acción donde se tejen relaciones entre lo propio y lo asumido (por diferencia con lo propio) en las localidades, tanto desde la localidad misma como desde los hilos de relación con la globalización de la economía y la mundialización de la cultura. En este entramado de relaciones, emerge la diversidad como condición de humanidad y expresión de las culturas con sus desafíos para tramitar las diferencias en la cotidianidad y para educar desde ellas, en ellas y para ellas. De modo tal que los territorios geográficos y socio-simbólicos devienen en campos de expresión de fuerzas históricas: dislocaciones de tiempos y modos de conquistar la propia humanidad, así como de relacionarse con lo no humano. Surge en tal dinámica relacional lo intercultural como problema social/educativo, en la medida que desafía la inteligencia colectiva tanto para la pervivencia como para la supervivencia en un continente como el Latinoamericano, donde confluyen con los discursos modernizantes y globalizados, los esfuerzos por evidenciar los encubrimientos históricos y por mantener las luchas de resistencias y re-existencias sostenidas por siglos, tanto como las luchas de aparición más reciente. Adentrarse en esta trama de relaciones desafía los recorridos metodológicos en la configuración de los problemas derivados, implica cuestionar los parámetros de legitimidad y legitimación del conocimiento producido, así como los lenguajes, las sensibilidades y los estatutos de validación y circulación de estos. Las hoy reconocidas transformaciones en los principios y fundamentos, en las formas de producir conocimiento, así como planteada y asumida la incorporación del sujeto investigado/investigador, de los asuntos metodológicos en términos de las estrategias, de las rutas y de las lógicas de configuración y despliegue para desbrozar los problemas, así como para validar el conocimiento derivado de ello, devienen centrales para pensar los problemas contemporáneos asociados a interculturalidad en este caso.

Este tomo contextualiza política e históricamente el proceso constituyente en Chile, enmarcando el estado de los derechos sociales tanto dentro de América Latina como del Chile post-dictadura, para luego identificar los eventuales límites del trabajo de la Convención Constituyente. En una segunda parte, este tomo conceptualiza a los derechos sociales dentro de un espectro más amplio de los derechos humanos, enfatizando la indivisibilidad e interdependencia que existe entre todos ellos (y por consiguiente desmitificando su comprensión como derechos de segunda generación) y la necesidad de adoptar medidas afirmativas en algunos casos para lograr la igualdad sustantiva. Además, esta sección resalta algunas particularidades de los derechos sociales como la posibilidad de implementación progresiva de aquellas partes de los derechos que no corresponden al contenido mínimo (de ejecución inmediata), la prohibición de regresividad en los sucesivas reformas que se orienten a garantizar derechos sociales y el rol fundamental que juega la política fiscal en la protección de estos derechos en el contexto constitucional.

Proyecto investigativo interinstitucional indaga por los núcleos y ejes que orientan las grandes temáticas y problemáticas que sobre el argumento de la formación integral se investiga en muchas de las Instituciones de Educación Superior a lo largo y ancho del continente latinoamericano. El grupo de docentes investigadores, parten de la generosa idea de que toda acción educativa vela por el crecimiento del ser humano como un todo invisible. Por tal razón, no habrá privilegios de la inteligencia sobre la afectividad, del desarrollo particular sobre el social, ni se separa la imaginación de la acción, por el contrario, y desde el fundamento de las corrientes epistemológicas y educativas contemporáneas, se debe concebir como un todo integrado e integral al ser humano, desde todas sus dimensiones; de esta manera, los autores apuestan a lo largo de sus premisas y conceptos, por la idea de que es necesario optar por un tipo de educación más holística e integral, a la vez que diversa e incluyente.

Plantear que la educación, en tanto hecho social, es factor de cambio, parece una premisa que concita acuerdos o, al menos, puntos de confluencia. Donde emergen las divergencias es en el despliegue de los procesos educativos y en sus alcances para enfrentar las demandas de la vida social contemporánea. Aún con un alto control por parte de los Estados, la educación institucionalizada pareciera requerir intervención permanente orientada a dar cuenta de la denominada calidad de la educación. Dotar de cualidad tal calidad implica establecer relaciones tanto internas como externas a la institución escolar misma, comprender los sujetos en el campo educativo y sus dinámicas, así como establecer vínculos con los territorios geográficos y socio-simbólicos donde esas relaciones se gestan, se tramitan, se tensionan, se rompen. En estos entramados, la noción de región cobra fuerza como ámbito de identidad y cercanía geográfica, cultural y social materializada en modos de relación económica, de circulación y producción cultural y de experiencia y emergencia de formas de vida social. En el reconocimiento de la potencia y alcance de tales entramados han surgido formas de organización política y administrativa diversas, orientadas, por un lado, al reconocimiento de las confluencias, y, por otro, al reconocimiento de las diversidades como referentes de organización y administración. Interrogar los vínculos entre educación y región, implica cuestionar, entre otras cosas, ¿Qué entramados teje la educación con el aprendizaje-la sociedad-la cultura?, ¿Cuál es el lugar del sujeto en las gestas territorializadas en las regiones?, ¿Qué dice la escuela (desde el preescolar hasta la universidad) sobre la educación?, ¿Qué alcance tiene internacionalizar la educación en perspectiva de pensar global y actuar local?, ¿De qué disponen las regiones para el vivir juntos? Este tipo de interrogantes orientan indagaciones y abren espacios de reflexión compartida entre instituciones. Así mismo, amplían horizontes en el diálogo con universidades extranjeras. Este libro reúne algunas reflexiones provenientes de diferentes ángulos e instituciones que posibilitan el refinamiento de las preguntas con miras a trabajar desde las raíces de los problemas emergentes en la relación educación y región.

Evaluar la sustentabilidad llevará a considerar la posibilidad de mostrar un aspecto contradictorio a dicho proceso; la insustentabilidad. Entonces la sustentabilidad e insustentabilidad se muestran como dos aspectos de una misma contradicción en un proceso mucho más amplio de análisis, experiencias y resultados de la humanidad por equilibrar armónicamente su relación con la naturaleza. Equilibrio o destrucción, ambas acepciones tendrán al centro de su proceso la vida en general y la supervivencia de la especie humana. La sociedad y las instituciones requieren de un sistema de señales que orienten la perspectiva de la sustentabilidad, mismas que se traduzcan en indicadores de la trayectoria del proceso. Éstos son sin duda una herramienta útil que contribuyen a objetivizar las principales tendencias ambientales, económicas, sociales y territoriales. Existe una gama de indicadores ambientales o de desarrollo sustentable de países con mayor poder económico o de agencias de desarrollo que han instrumentado su utilización.
