Tucker-Stephenson, Aisha. « An exploratory study of the psychosocial factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior among African American college aged women ». DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2001. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/1461.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study examines whether or not HIV/AIDS education, socioeconomic status, and/or self-esteem affect the frequency with which African American women between the ages of 18 and 24 participate in risky sexual behavior. HTV is an acronym for the human immunodeficiency virus, which is the virus that leads to AIDS, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. AIDS is one of the most deadly diseases affecting the world today and is the number one killer of African American women between the ages of 18 and 24. HIV/AIDS prevention education has been the major outreach tool used to combat the spread of this disease. However, prevention education does not seem to be impacting this population significantly, which leaves many searching for other answers for outreach. The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not HIV/AIDS prevention education plays a major role in deterring this population from participating in risky sexual behavior or if self-esteem and socioeconomic status are more influential in this population's sexual decision making. A predominantly African American college campus in Atlanta, Georgia provided a sample of 94 African American women between the ages of 18 and 24. Each participant completed a questionnaire regarding their HIV/AIDS prevention education level, their socioeconomic status, and their level of selfesteem. The data collected via the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive, as well as, cross tabulation analysis. A focus group often participants was also convened to explore the responses on the questionnaires more in-depthly. While the findings did not show a significant relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), HIV/AIDS knowledge and risky sexual behavior, there was evidence of a relationship between selfesteem and risky sexual behavior. Implications for measuring SES and self-esteem in this population are discussed.

Miletic, Blanka. « Psycho-Social, Work, and Marital Adjustment of Older Middle-Aged Refugees from the Former Yugoslavia ». Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30430.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Adopting the Ecological Contextual Model of Acculturation and Adjustment (Birman, 1994; Trickett, 1996) and the Stress and Coping paradigm (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984, 1986, 1991), the present thesis explored the psycho-social, work, and marital adjustment of 200 established older middle-aged refugees from the Former Yugoslavia living in the Ottawa area. More specifically, three studies were conducted to examine specific stressors and resources of relevance to the adjustment of Former Yugoslavian men and women, across the following three distinct life domains: psycho-social, work, and marital. Study I explored the potential buffering effects of interpersonal trust on the relational growth of Former Yugoslavian refugees. Results demonstrated that interpersonal trust moderated the negative effects of war-related trauma on the relational growth of Former Yugoslavian women. No such buffering effect was found for the men. Study II investigated Former Yugoslavians' work adjustment by exploring the influence of pre-migratory work-related expectations-outcome congruence, occupational mobility, work stress (general and discrimination), as well as personal (education, English language proficiency) and social resources (support at work) on their work satisfaction and distress. Results indicated that different factors emerged as significant predictors of work satisfaction and work distress for Former Yugoslavian men and women. Study III explored the potential moderating role of marital resilience on the relationship between marital stress (general and acculturative) and marital adjustment. Results showed that marital resilience moderated the negative effects of marital stress on the marital adjustment of Former Yugoslavian women. No protective effect of marital resilience was found for the men. Taken together, the results of the three studies provide support for the relevance and importance of studying the stress, resources, and adjustment of refugees across contexts and gender. Given that important gender differences were found in different adaptational domains, the need to study further the impact of gender in refugees is reinforced. The findings are discussed within the current gender and migration literatures as well as the multidimensional theories of cross-cultural adjustment. Theoretical, research, and clinical implications were presented, along with recommendations for future research.

Garrett, Dawne. « What are the experiences of sexual intimacy in people aged 75-85 in the UK in the context of partnership relationships ». Thesis, University of Hull, 2017. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:16531.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The experiences of sexual intimacy for partnered older people are little researched. This study, situated in a life course perspective on sexuality, purposively sampled data from 11 in-depth interviews and 41 pieces of correspondence from people between the ages of 75-85 in the United Kingdom. The study used Intuitive Inquiry, a method consisting of five “Cycles”; clarification of topic, literature review and description of initial “lenses”, data collection and summaries, integration of the data with literature to produce the final “lenses” and lastly synthesises of the stages of the study to produce a final interpretation. Data were analysed thematically and phenomenologically providing both breadth and depth. The thematic findings recorded observable acts of sexual intimacy and continuums of participant’s thoughts and feelings. The continuums were organised into five meta-themes: the effects of ageing, the nature of relationships, the family context, seeking assistance and the sexual life story. The phenomenological analysis provided “Being Together” as the essence with the constituents; Maintaining intimacy in changing circumstances, Setting current intimacy across a life course, Concern about what people think, The possibility of sexual intimacy and The spectre of death. In addition to the findings the new contributions to the body of knowledge include; a definition of sexual intimacy in older age, the use of intuitive inquiry as a research method within the UK and a greater understanding in researching sensitive topics with older people. The recommendations highlighted a need for increased professional understanding of older age sexual intimacy and practical interventions to preserve sexual intimacy as part of essential holistic care. Further development of the continuums is planned to develop a tool to aid identification of synchronicity or discord between couples as a potential aid to clinical and therapeutic intervention.

Jayes, Claire Sharman. « Some characteristics of a group of coloured runaway boys aged 8 - 16 years and factors that these boys and their mother perceived as contributing to their runaway behavior ». Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14560.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study was of a group of street children who had run away from home. The writer sought to discover factors that led to their running away. Interviews were conducted with both the boys and their mothers (or mother substitutes). Interview schedules with both open-ended and closed questions were used to obtain certain demographic characteristics of the families, the runaway episodes and the causes for the runaway behaviour as perceived by the runaways and their mothers. The study revealed that multiple interrelated factors within the families, the boys and society seemed to contribute either directly or indirectly to their runaway behaviour. Homes were marked by conflict, instability, alcohol and physical abuse, deprivation and neglect. The runaways in turn responded to their stressful home life by running away. The runaways in contrast to their mothers, predominantly perceived factors within the home as causing them to leave home, whereas the mothers tended to externalize these causes to peer group influences.

Shaon, Amanda R. « The relationship between social support and current life satisfaction in combat theatre veterans aged 50 and older ». Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1570855.

Texte intégral
Résumé :

This thesis investigated the relationship between social support and current life satisfaction in combat theatre veterans aged 50 and older. This study addressed a lack of research-based literature on this topic. The participants of this study (n=31) served in active duty in a theatre of war. Social support was measured using a researcher constructed questionnaire, The Veterans Perceived Social Support Questionnaire. Life Satisfaction was measured using Diener's (1985) Satisfaction with Life Scale. No significant relationship was found between social support and life satisfaction for this group. However, veterans who engaged in social activities a few times per month or more frequently reported higher current life satisfaction, than those who endorsed very minimal social activity.

Gerontologists can use this information to educate facilitators of veterans' groups about how to increase the frequency of social activities, which could lead to an increase in life satisfaction.

Nicole, Colette. « The effects of media exposure on the self-perceptions of black women who have aged out of the foster care system ». DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2016. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/2928.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Black community within the foster care system has received minimal empirical attention as it pertains to the impact of media intake, caregiver navigation and levels of self-perceptions. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the correlations between these variables. The nonrandom snowball sampling method was used to recruit 18 Black women, who were eighteen years old or older and former foster youth, to participate in a self-administered online survey. The nonparametric test, Spearman's Rho, was chosen to analyze both research questions due to the sample size violating a Pearson's Correlation assumption. The relationship between media intake and levels of self-perceptions had a p value of .394, whereas, the relationship between caregiver navigation and levels of self-perceptions had a p value of .109. Therefore, the findings for research question one revealed that there were no correlations between levels of self-perceptions and media intake. Similarly, research question two identified no significant relationships among the levels of self-perceptions and caregiver navigation. This study highlights the importance for additional research, as Black foster care youth are an underserved population with many unidentified needs; this includes that of parental guidance to heighten self-perceptions and buffer the potentially negative impact of the media.

Garrity, Zoë. « Old age, caring policies and governmentality ». Thesis, University of Sussex, 2013. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/47054/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Through the theoretical lens of Foucault's archaeological method, this thesis undertakes a discourse analysis to examine how old age and ageing are strategically positioned as forms of governmentality in New Labour social care policy documents. It is argued that these discourses are not directed purely at the older generation, but at everyone, at all stages of life, encompassing all aspects of everyday living. Old age thus becomes a strategy of governing the population through individual everyday lives. This hints at the way ageing is prefigured, anticipated and lived in advance. An analytical method is developed by weaving together Foucault's notions of archaeology and governmentality; the latter is utilised both as an analytical perspective and to provide an understanding of how people primarily act and interact in contemporary Western societies. This analytical perspective is initially applied to an exploration of how the form and function of social policy enable ordinary practices of life to become targets of political government, making both possible and desirable the government of everyday living: governing how we ought to live in every aspect of life from work and finances to health, to personal relationships and leisure activities. The thesis progresses to explore this in more detail through a practical application of governmentality and focused discourse analysis of eight New Labour social care policy texts. The aim of the analysis is to explore what subjectivities and forms of life are possible within these discourses and therefore what these policies actually do, as distinguished from what they claim to be doing. It is argued that the discourses that emerge in these policies act to limit and subjectify, by attempting to contain and stabilise the multitude of possibilities for practices of living. By ostensibly aiming to create social inclusion the policies make possible vast areas of exclusion that become prime spaces of government. Thus many ways of living, ageing, and being old become untenable due to their inherent contradiction with the social values and rationalities upon which these discourses are based. Whilst governmentality analyses have been brought to many other policy areas, this thesis makes an original contribution by: developing a governmental analysis of social policy as a form of biopolitics; by applying this analysis to the social care field; and by using policy discourses of old age and ageing to draw out significant aspects of a governmental society. In particular it explores the dispersion of many traditional boundaries, leading to the rearrangement of relations, responsibilities and subjectivities.

Résumé :

The purpose of this project was to design a program, identify a funding source, and write a grant to fund a prevention and intervention program for youth and parents in impoverished neighborhoods who are facing educational losses and barriers due to their socioeconomic class. An extensive literature review increased the writer's knowledge about the relationship between poverty and education. Information about evidence-based prevention programs was gathered and used by the grant writer to design a best practices program for impoverished neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, particularly the South Central area. A search for potential funding sources via Internet, library, and grant funding search engines resulted in the selection of the Weingart Foundation as the best funding source for this project.

The funds will be used to open "Pearl of Hope" in the South Central area of Los Angeles. The objectives of the program are to: (a) increase student's academic performance; (b) facilitate home environments that are conducive to their child's education; and (c) educate teachers of effective ways of working with children that come from poor backgrounds.

Crossland, John. « Border crossings : investigating the comparability of case management in a service for older people in Berlin ». Thesis, University of Sussex, 2012. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/38640/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Case management, a coordinating process designed to align service provision more closely to the identified needs of people requiring assistance in the context of complex care systems, is an example of those policies and practices that cross the borders of different national welfare systems, ostensibly to resolve the same or similar problems in the adopting country. Developed in the USA, case management was re-named 'care management' upon adoption in the UK as part of the community care reforms of the early 1990s, reforms which have framed my professional life in English local authority adult social care services ever since. In 2007, a temporary research fellowship (TH Marshall Fellowship, London School of Economics) enabled me to spend four months in Berlin studying a citywide case management service for older people in the context of German long-term care policy and legislation. This experience sits at the core of this thesis which addresses the extent to which the study of a specific case management service for older people in Berlin can illuminate how case management translates across differing national welfare contexts, taking into account the particular methodological challenges of cross-national research. Drawing on both cross-national social policy and translation studies literatures and adopting a multi-method case study approach, the central problems of determining similarity and difference, equivalence and translation form the core of the thesis. Informed by a realist understanding of the social world, the study took a naturalistic turn in situ that fore-grounded the more ethnographic elements in the mix of documentary research, semi-participant observation and meetings with key informants that formed my data sources and were recorded in extensive field notes. The data were analysed to trace how case management was constructed locally in relation to both state and federal level policy and legislation, and then comparatively re-examined in the context of the key methodological problems identified above in relation to understandings of care management in England as reported in the literature, in order to further explore the question of comparability of case management across different welfare contexts. The research clearly demonstrates how institutional context both shaped and constrained the adoption of case management in Berlin, and highlights a need in comparative research for close contextual examination of the apparently similar, with a focus on functionally equivalent mechanisms, to determine the extent to which case management can be said to be similar or different in different contexts, particularly where English words and expressions are directly absorbed into the local language. Relating the case study to findings from earlier studies of care management in England highlights the extent to which care management in England is itself a locally shaped and contextualised variant of case management as developed in the USA that matches poorly to the variant in Berlin. Indeed problems discovered in the research site constructing definitional boundaries for case management in practice mirror issues in the wider literature and raise questions about the specificity of the original concept itself. Nonetheless, the study shows that, despite the multiple asymmetries of equivalence and difficulties of translation, there are sufficient points of similarity for cautious potential lessons to be drawn from Berlin, particularly with regards to policy changes on the horizon in England, but also in the other direction with regards to how case management in Berlin may also be re-shaped following recent reforms to German long-term care legislation.

This study\'s general objective was to analyze the relationships among social network and support, satisfaction with social support and sociodemographic variables, and the physical and mental health of elderly individuals cared for in a Geriatric Ambulatory Clinic of a Tertiary General Hospital in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. This descriptive, cross-sectional and exploratory study was conducted with 98 elderly individuals cared for in the aforementioned clinic. The following were used to collect data: Mini-Mental State Exam, sociodemographic and health characterization questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), Katz Index, Lawton and Brody Scale, the network and social support scales of the Medical Outcomes Study, and the Satisfaction with Social Support Scale. This study was in compliance with the ethical aspects of Resolution 466/2012, National Council of Health. The participants were 80.1 years old on average; 70.4% were women; 49.0% were widowed; with 2.3 years of schooling on average; 24.5% lived with their spouses and children or only with children; and family income was R$1,773.70, on average. In regard to functional capacity, 80.6% were independent in the performance of basic activities of daily living (BADL) and 88.8% were partially dependent for instrumental activities (IADL). The individuals had 5.3 medical diagnoses on average and depressive symptoms were experienced by 61.2%. In regard to social networks, the individuals had an average of 6.5 people in their network, while 36.7% presented medium contact and participation in social activities. In terms of social support, the highest average score was obtained in the material dimension (90.2) and the lowest score was obtained in positive social interaction (81.8), while 36.7% and 32.7% of the individuals presented high and average satisfaction with social support, respectively. A inverse correlation was found between the scores of all dimensions of the social support scale and the scores obtained on the EDG-15, indicating that the higher the social support in all the dimensions, the lower the presence of depressive symptoms. Statistically significant differences were found in all the dimensions: material (p=0.014), affective (p=0.026), interaction (p=0.011), emotional (p=0.001) and information (p=0.005). In turn, correlation between the scores of the dimensions of the social support scale and the scores obtained on the Lawton and Brody scale was weak and inverse for the material (r=-0.157) and information (r=-0.027) dimensions, suggesting that the lower one\'s independence for performing IADLs, the higher the social support in these dimensions, though no significant differences were found between material (p=0.121) and information (p=0.789). The correlation between the EDG-15 scores and the scores obtained for satisfaction with social support scale was and inverse and moderate (r=-0.467); i.e., the higher one\'s satisfaction with social support, the lower the presence of depressive symptoms, a finding that is statistically significant (p=0.000). Therefore, there is a need to acquire more knowledge in regard to the elderly individuals inserted in a social network and identify how they perceive social support, in order to better direct healthcare delivered to elderly individuals and plan public policies, and programs and projects directed to this population

Résumé :
Research suggests that the relatively low rates of former foster youth enrolling in and graduating from a postsecondary institution may be related to lack of foster care system support. This study examined whether perceived support from the foster care system was related to the postsecondary enrollment and academic performance of former foster youth, and whether males and females differed in perceived support from the foster care system. Forty-five former foster youth aged 18-24 years who had transitioned from a southeastern state completed a measure of social support and reported whether they had attended a postsecondary institution and, if so, their cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Analysis showed no significant relationships between participants' perceptions of foster care system support and their postsecondary attendance or performance. Analysis also showed no difference between genders in perceived support from the foster care system based on gender. Two notable results of the study were that over half the sample reported they had attended or were attending a postsecondary institution, with over 90% of those planning to continue, and nearly 40% reported a college GPA of 3.0 or above, suggesting considerable success in postsecondary classes. A limitation of the study was its reliance on self-report data. Recommendations included repeating the study by surveying former foster youth in several states to obtain ample participants. A social change implication was that a number of former foster youth are overcoming the unique challenges they face that might hinder their postsecondary attendance and success.

Résumé :

The purpose of this study was to examine and describe how politicians and directors of care define and experience quality in aged care facilities. Further on we wanted to compare on which fundamental principles the participants base their opinion about quality and how they work with quality. To reach our aim we conducted five interviews with politicians and directors of care. The results show that it is hard to determine quality in an unambiguous and objective way. Quality in aged care appears to be about relations and encounters amongst people. The participants in our study agree that experiences are subjective and depending on individual expectations.

There are fundamental principles shared by both politicians and directors of care regarding safety and respect of human integrity. Directors of care point out the difficulties in having multiple perspectives to consider, residents and their relatives have other expectations on what services should be provided than the directors of care understand to be their assignment from the local government. It appears to be a gap between political goals and reality. The future will bring changes, regarding both needs and expectations. The participants see a challenge in developing aged care and meeting new generations of elderly.

Résumé :
Four different case management programs delivered by UnitingCare Community Options (UCCO) in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne were examined against the expectations of case management as a policy solution to a range of perceived policy problems at the micro-, meso- and macro-levels. The micro-level expectations were related to client and family experiences of the service system and outcomes. At the meso-level expectations were focused on perceived service delivery problems such as poor matching of services to the needs of ‘complex’ clients including a lack of integration, flexibility and responsiveness to clients’ needs and preferences. Perceived macro-level policy problems were concerned with a variety of issues including increasing rates of institutionalisation, increasing costs to governments, lack of economic efficiency and the desire to create market or quasi-market conditions in the community care service delivery sector. Résumé :
Even though Sweden is considered a high trust society, research on this topic is primarily based on a few standardized survey questions. It is also known that there is a robust pattern of less trustful young people compared to older ones. Still, a satisfactory explanation of this fact is lacking. Thus, the first aim of this dissertation is to map trust among young adults and middle-aged individuals. The second aim is to examine by which factors and in what way different dimensions of trust are determined, focusing on individuals’ life course and consequently experiences. Analytical principles from the life course tradition are used as a theoretical framework. Data is derived from a Swedish cross-sectional nationally representative postal survey on trust, and qualitative interviews using a mixed-methods approach. A multi-dimensional concept of trust is suggested. Participants report relatively high levels of trust in known and unknown people, confidence in institutions, normative notions of trust, security, and trustful behaviour. Trust also seems to be structured according to a closeness principle. Young adults display lower trust levels in general. However, in some respects the pattern is reversed, particularly regarding domains they are expected to be more familiar with. Contrary to the well-established idea of generalised trust derived from predispositions and primary socialization, and particularised trust originating from experiences in adulthood, the results of this study suggest that unique combinations of factors, both individual characteristics and experiences, might explain each of the different dimensions. Often there is a sphere-specific relationship between experiences and later trust, i.e. experiences from one sphere of life seem to exclusively affect trust within the same sphere. It is suggested that as people grow older they accumulate what is called experience capital, which might benefit trust and contribute to an explanation of the age differences.

Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the dynamics of family support and public pension systems, and their impact on late-life happiness in contemporary South Korea. For this, three specific research questions, namely (1) the dynamics of intergenerational solidarity, public pension systems, and happiness; (2) the association between intergenerational solidarity and happiness; and (3) the association between public pension systems and happiness, are analysed by exploiting the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The analyses show that (1) the structural solidarity of older people is relatively stronger than of middle-aged people; (2) contacting is the key player in associational solidarity in later life; (3) middle-aged people supply more financial aid to their adult children than they receive from them, but the reverse applies to older people. Both middle-aged and older people actively exchange food, household items, and health-care supplies; (4) more older men receive the National Pension Scheme benefit than older women but the reverse is true for the Basic Old-Age Pension benefit; (5) the level of happiness in later life is very high but decreases as people age; (6) the number of adult children, frequency of contact, and amount of financial support are positively associated with the happiness of older people; and (7) the National Pension Scheme is positively associated with the happiness of older men while the Basic Old-Age Pension is negatively associated with the happiness of older people. The results suggest some policy implications for late-life happiness in contemporary South Korea. At the individual level, increased frequency of contact, availability of the children, and the amount of financial support can enhance late-life happiness. At the governmental level, the research suggests that the gendered structure of the National Pension Scheme and means-tested structure of the Basic Old-Age Pension should be reformed.

« Differences in causal attributions among depressed, aggressive, and mixed depressed and aggressive latency-aged children ». Tulane University, 1992.

Résumé :
This empirical investigation compared the attributional styles of depressed, aggressive, and mixed depressed and aggressive latency-aged children. It was hypothesized that there were significant differences in the manner in which the three diagnostic groups explain good and bad events utilizing the attributional dimensions of controllability, locus, stability, and globality The outpatient clinical sample consisted of 30 youngsters ages 7 through 12, 10 depressed, 10 aggressive, and 10 mixed depressed and aggressive. Diagnostic classification was made utilizing the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (1981, 1983) and the Children's Depression Inventory (1988). Attributions were measured using the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale (1973) and the Kastan-Revised Children's Attributional Style Questionnaire (1978, 1988). Social competency, demographic, and family data were also obtained. Results pertaining to hypotheses were analyzed by one-way ANOVA comparing attributional differences among diagnostic categories. Correlational statistics were utilized in a more exploratory analysis of the relationship between depression and aggression and the attributional dimensions and included family and social competency data The results indicated that the Aggressive group viewed themselves as having significantly more control over events in their lives as compared to the Depressed group. The Mixed group did not differ substantially from either of the other two groups on controllability. On the other attributional dimensions, significant differences were found only between the Aggressive and the Mixed groups. The Mixed group had a more overall depressive attributional style, attributed fewer positive events to internal causes, and viewed negative events as more global than did the Aggressive group. Social competency was positively correlated with Depressed group membership and negatively correlated with Mixed group membership. Youngsters in the Mixed group were also more likely to have suffered abuse and neglect. The results suggest that controllability is an important attributional dimension in understanding the thinking of both depressed and aggressive youngsters; that there is more than one attributional pattern in youngsters exhibiting clinical depression; and that social competency and abuse/neglect play a role in the development of both depression and aggression in children
