Résumé :
The economics of clean energy have evolved beyond their traditional environmental justifications. Solar energy, in particular, now stands at the confluence of market competitiveness, technological advancement, and strategic resilience. This article expands upon the prevailing arguments in favor of solar investment, offering deeper theoretical insights and empirical illustrations. It examines how solar energy addresses multiple forms of market failure, catalyzes employment in emerging sectors, reduces geopolitical vulnerabilities, and presents a sustainable vehicle for intergenerational wealth

The solar photovoltaics (PV) is one way for us to deploy free, abundant and clean solar energy. The development trend of solar PV deployment around the world is growing over time thanks to the price drops in solar PV modules and systems and low greenhouse gas emission of solar energy. The goal of this thesis is to estimate the solar PV potential in Finland. A comprehensive climatological database, Meteonorm, is our primary tool for the estimation of annual solar irradiations in different Finnish cities. Afterwards, the annual energy output of a 1 kWp solar PV system inclined to the optimum ang

Résumé :
In this thesis, I present three research papers that focus on the economics of behind-the-meter technologies for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Each of these papers takes the perspective of the customer, where the value of the technology comes from reducing their electricity bill. In Chapter 2, I assess whether solar photovoltaics are economically viable without subsidies for residential customers across the United States. I calculate the break-even electricity prices and installation costs and find that, at a state level, solar PV is only currently economically attractive

Over the last 10 years, the solar photovoltaic (PV) market has experienced tremendous growth due in part to government incentive programs. However the effect and welfare analysis of these policy instruments remain ambiguous. In the first chapter of my dissertation, we estimate a dynamic model of households investment decisions on rooftop PV systems to understand the impact of these programs on residential solar installations and evaluate the outcome of alternative incentive policies. The model separately evaluates the effect of system prices, up-front subsidies, tax credits and production reve

As the ‘green’ energy movement continues to gain momentum, photovoltaic generation is becoming an increasingly popular source for new power generation. The primary focus of this paper is to demonstrate the benefits of close-to real-time cloud sensing for Photovoltaic generation. In order to benefit from this close-to real-time data, a source of cloud cover information is necessary. This paper looks into the potential of point insolation sensors to determine overhead cloud coverage. Abstract The life expectancy of transmission structures depends largely on the material selected and the material’s suitability to the environment to which the structures are exposed. The selection of galvanized and weathering steels for above and below grade applications is a matter of corrosion engineering judgement and corrosivity of the service environments, economics, appearance, and aesthetics. The best way to select the right material for T&D applications is to develop a corrosion map for the service territory that addresses both atmospheric and underground corrosion risks. The map

Résumé :
There are not many non-biological resources that can be extracted from the ocean without causing serious environmental impact and whose extraction is concomitantly sustainable. But among the few ones it is appropriate to mention ocean energy. The exploitation of these has been suggested for centuries, often decried, only exceptionally undertaken. It is perhaps opportune to reconsider them because, mega-projects set aside, they could bring an appreciable relief to the heavy burden that weighs upon isolated areas, poor countries, deprived of hydrocarbon reserves, for their energy needs.

Résumé :
The levelized costs of electricity from renewables have decreased by up to 90% in the past decade. During the same period, the cost of nuclear power has increased by more than a third. This led to a domination of renewables in new investments worldwide. Even when factoring in integration costs of renewables and new nuclear technologies, building new nuclear power remains multiple times more expensive than new solar or wind projects. Given the financial, project, and technological risks, the role of nuclear in the energy transition should be questioned.
