Résumé :
In Japanese sentences, the default word order is ‘subject-object-verb’ (SOV). However, Japanese allows scrambling of noun phrases (NPs), for example ‘object-subject-verb’ (OSV) as opposed to the unscrambled default order. Two self-paced reading experiments in the moving window paradigm were conducted to test the effects of syntax, semantics and discourse in native Japanese and native English speakers’ processing of scrambled Japanese sentences. The first experiment examined how the syntactic factor (NP order) and semantic factor (NP animacy) affect processing of Japanese sentences. Results rev

Résumé :
This paper investigates gender agreement mismatches between nominal expressions and the targets of agreement they control in two groups (adults and adolescents) of Heritage Greek speakers in the USA. On the basis of language production data elicited via a narration task, we show that USA Greek Heritage speakers, unlike monolingual controls, show mismatches in gender agreement. We will show that the mismatches observed differ with respect to the agreement target between groups, i.e., noun phrase internal agreement seems more affected in the adolescent group, while personal pronouns appear equal

Résumé :
In Brazilian Portuguese, depictive predicates can have ambiguous readings: the attribute can either refer to the subject (high attachment; HA) or the object (low attachment; LA) of the sentence. Previous studies have found that LA is the default interpretation for ambiguous depictive predicates (e.g., Magalhães & Maia 2006, Fonseca & Magalhães 2007), and that speakers use different acoustic cues to signal HA. However, these studies found several mismatches between speakers’ intended intonation and listeners’ interpretations. We conducted a judgement task and a production task to determ

Processability Theory (PT; Pienemann, 1998) argues that there is a universal hierarchy in the acquisition of second language (L2) grammar. As for L2 syntax, PT proposes the Lexical Mapping Hypothesis (LMH; Pienemann, et al. 2005) in which learners are predicted to progress from ‘default mapping’, where the argument hierarchy maps onto the grammatical function hierarchy in a default way, to ‘non-default mapping’, where the strictly hierarchical mapping is disrupted under semantic and/or pragmatic pressure (Pienemann, et al., 2015). It checks whether code-switching imposes a prosodic break at the place of language change, and whether this prosodic break affects RC parsing, as predicted by the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis: a high attachment (HA) preference results from a prosodic break at the RC. In this way, Ivy claims that speakers tend to experience an internal duty of honesty and truthfulness and this is what drives assertoric practices. Given

Résumé :
Most IRC 52 based upon existing TP52 retain their original rig proportions and mainsail girths to avoid the cost and disruption of a rig change and to not disturb he finely tuned yaw balance. It is not obvious whether the mainsail proportions essentially dictated by the TP52 box rule (aggressively square topped mainsails) are actually optimal under IRC even though IRC 52 with TP52 style mainsails tend to successfully compete under IRC. To determine the answer to this question, a mainsail planform investigation was performed as collaboration between Botin Partners and Quantum Sail Design Group.

Résumé :
In this study, the computational fluid dynamics programs ANSYS Icepak along with ANSYS Fluent were used to model and simulate the multiphase dielectric fluid immersion cooling of a multichip model on a printed circuit board using a variety of functions for nucleation site density and bubble departure diameter. Numerical results were validated against experimental data for the same geometry and working fluid. The numerical model in this study is a reduced form of an experimental setup, which consisted of four equally spaced, 24 mm by 24 mm die, arranged in a square pattern and centered on a pri

Résumé :
Design features of SMART such as a large coolant inventory with a relatively low flow rate and the existence of a once-through steam generator require new steam control logic capable of coping with a prompt load change without inducing severe operational parameter fluctuations. A new MMS SMART model was developed to study the load-following capability and the system parameter manageability of three candidate control logics: the reactor leading, the turbine leading, and the feedwater leading logics. The MMS SMART model was composed of several interacting MMS modules with numerical data, each of

Nowadays, with the introduction of multilingual crews and the loss of universal forms of communication, the importance of English as the 'lingua franca' of the sea has become paramount. In the aftermath of Intermar (a European Cooperation Programme under Key Action 2 of the Transversal Programme), this paper showcases part of the project's final result - online custom-designed courses for Intercomprehension (a 'natural' form of communication based on mutual understanding) and Maritime English. The ultimate goal of this project was to create of consortium of 18 institutions including European m

Résumé :
JAI has developed a simple computer program for use in determining a preliminary estimate of costs for transporting spent nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive waste by legal weight truck or by rail. The JAI Corporation Spent Fuel and High-Level Radioactive Waste Transportation Cost Model © is a Microsoft Excel 2000-based collection of spreadsheets. Both the truck and rail sub-models consist of three spreadsheets, or modules — as follows: • The “Input” spreadsheet accepts the user’s inputs (the user’s configuration of the transportation scenario to be modeled); • The “Cost Calculations” sprea
