Résumé :
An active electromagnetic stabilization of the Leipholz column We study the application of electromagnetic actuators for the active stabilization of the Leipholz column. The cases of the compressive and tensional load of the column placed in air and in water are considered. The partial differential equation of the column is discretized by Galerkin's procedure, and the stability of the obtained control system is evaluated by the eigenvalues of its linearization. Four different methods of active stabilization are investigated. They incorporate control systems based on feedback proportional to the transverse displacement of the column, its velocity and the current in the electromagnets. Conditions in which these strategies are effective in securing safe operation of the column are discussed in detail.

Résumé :
Deep lime stabilization such as lime column, can effectively improve the problematic soft clay through stabilization, settlement reduction and embankment stabilization. Nevertheless, the reduction of lime column load capacity was often encountered due to the column lateral displacement which was induced by high lateral earth pressure in embankments and deep excavation. In order to protect and enhance the mobilization of lime column strength, geotextile encapsulation was proposed for lime column. In this study, large shear box tests were conducted on lime column and geotextile encapsulated lime column (GELC) stabilized Pontian marine clay samples with different column sizes and curing ages, in order to investigate the performance of geotextile encapsulation on lime column in Pontian marine clay under shear loading. It was found that geotextile encapsulation effectively increased the horizontal shear resistance of lime column and protected the column from defect due to lateral displacement, especially at early age when modification was still in process. Geotextile encapsulation also successfully protected lime column from shear and bending failure under lateral load.

Résumé :
The major rivers within the City of Winnipeg are founded in glacial Lake Agassiz clay and silt sediments that have low shear strength. As such, riverbank instabilities are a common issue along many stretches of the rivers. The use of rockfill columns has become an increasingly utilized approach for stabilizing failing banks. Recent cases in Winnipeg have shown that movements can occur following installation of rockfill columns. Uncertainty regarding the magnitude of these movements that is required to mobilize shearing resistance in the rockfill columns has resulted in situations where the stability of riverbanks following remediation has been questioned. This has provided a need to improve our understanding about how much movement a stabilized slope must undergo before sufficient shear resistance of the rockfill column will be mobilized. The results of experimental testing conducted to assess the shear mobilization of rockfill column materials using a large-scale direct shear test apparatus are presented in this paper. The testing methodology is described along with the test results. The results show that the development of material specifications, construction, and placement methods and appropriate methods of analysis requires understanding of the stress–strain properties of the in situ soil and the rockfill material.

Résumé :
Dry jet mixing has been widely used since the 1980s for stabilization of soft soil. The quality and strength of the dry-jet-mixed columns must be evaluated to confirm the success of the stabilization. The standard penetration test (SPT) is shown to be a simple and effective method for this task. The strength characteristics along the length of the column were determined, and correlations between the SPT blow count and the unconfined compressive strength were developed.

Résumé :
Object The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results obtained in patients who underwent anterior stabilization for three-column thoracolumbar fractures. Methods The authors retrospectively reviewed available clinical and radiographic data (1997–2006) to classify three-column thoracolumbar fractures according to the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO) system, neurological status, spinal canal compromise, pre- and postoperative segmental angulation, and arthrodesis rate. The mean computed tomography–measured preoperative spinal canal compromise was 48.3% (range 8–92%), and the mean vertebral body height loss was 39.4%. The mean preoperative kyphotic deformity of 14.9° improved to 4.6° at the final follow-up examination. Although this angulation had increased a mean of 1.8° during the follow-up period, the extent of correction was still significant compared with the preoperative angulation (p < 0.01). There were no cases of vascular complication or neurological deterioration. Conclusions Contemporary anterior spinal reconstruction techniques can allow certain types of unstable three-column thoracolumbar fractures to be treated via an anterior approach alone. Compared with traditional posterior approaches, the anterior route spares lumbar motion segments and obviates the need for harvesting of the iliac crest.

Résumé :
Column experiments investigated the stabilization of waste rock from Ljusnarsberg mine in Kopparberg, Sweden. In order to inhibit the generation of acidic leachate from the waste rock, biosludge and a Ca carbonate – rich residue from the paper industry were mixed with the sulfidic mine waste. The results of the column experiments indicate that the stabilization of the waste rock with the reactive amendments succeeded in maintaining a near – neutral pH in the waste rock leachate, compared to a pH 3 leachate from untreated waste rock. Copper and Zn concentrations in leachate from the untreated waste exceeded 100 mg/L, while these metals were detected at concentrations less than 0.1 and 1 mg/L, respectively, in the leachate from the treated wastes. This study indicates that the stabilization of acid – generating waste rock with biosludge and Ca carbonate residues is effective in preventing the generation of acid mine drainage; the treatment is expected to continue until the reactive amendments are exhausted.

Résumé :
With the development of economic status and living standard, eutrophication of lakes has become serious problem. Due to continuous inflow of external nutrients into lakes, phosphorus, a critical nutrient for lake production, has been accumulated in large amount in the sediment. Thus phosphorus rich sediment acts as an internal nutrient source and reduction of phosphorus release from the sediment is very important for restoring eutrophied lakes. Among the various strategies to restore lakes, in-situ capping is known as an attractive and cost-effective method for remediation of contaminated sediments. In this paper, lab-scale batch column test was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of capping materials on reduction of phosphorus release from the sediment. Three different types of capping materials including sand, zeolite, and natural gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) were used. Each column was filled 7 cm with sediment and covered by 1 cm of sand, zeolite, and natural gypsum, respectively. The change of water quality in supernatant solution was monitored for 10 days in each column. From the results, addition of gypsum showed higher treatment efficiency than sand and zeolite. In case of the capping with gypsum, it was found that the phosphorous release from the sediment could be reduced by around 90% as compared with untreated column. On the contrary, phosphorus reduction efficiencies of sand and zeolite were 60% and 14%, respectively. Moreover, in case of the capping with sand and zeolite, sudden increase of phosphorus concentration was observed with the generation of CH4 gas from sediment. Methanobacterial ebullition is one of the important factors for transporting phosphorus from sediment into water column. It was reported that the addition of gypsum could reduce the progress of methanogensis by supplying sulfate into sediment, which enhances the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and mineralization rate of organic matter.

Résumé :
In this article, a new strategy for switching control has been proposed with the aim of reducing oscillations in floating offshore wind turbines. Such oscillations lead to a shortage in the system’s efficiency, lifespan and harvesting capability of wind and wave energies. In order to study the decreasing of undesired oscillations in the system, particularly in pitch and top tower fore-aft movements, a square-shaped platform barge equipped with four symmetric oscillating water columns has been considered. The oscillating water columns’ air flux valves allow to operate the air columns so that to control the barge movements caused by oscillatory motion of the waves. In order to design the control scheme, response amplitude operators have been used to evaluate the performance of the system for a range of wave frequency profiles. These response amplitude operators analysis makes it possible to implement a switching control strategy to adequately regulate the valves opening/closing transition. The obtained results show that the proposed controlled oscillating water column-based barge present a better performance compared to the traditional barge one. In the case study with the period of 10 s, the results indicate the significant oscillation reduction for the controlled oscillating water column-based system compared to the standard barge system by 30.8% in pitch angle and 25% in fore-aft displacement.

Résumé :
Previous researchers reported that problematic soft clay can be improved by deep lime stabilization. However, due to low confining pressure of surrounding soil, problems often occurred at top part of column which reduced the performance of lime column, such as: crushing at column head and higher settlement for surrounding soil at the upper part of column. Geotextile encapsulated lime column (GELC) was proposed in this study. The stresses on column are essential in the analysis on columnar improved soil. Multi-stage loading test was conducted on lime column and GELC stabilized Pontian marine clay aged 14 days, 28 days and 56 days in order to investigate axial stress on lime column and GELC stabilized Pontian marine clay. Geotextile encapsulation increased the compressive strength of lime column about 70 percent at axial strain of 8 percent.

Résumé :
This paper presents the findings of a study into the engineering properties of two peats from the Irish Midlands that were mixed with various binders to form a stabilized soil. The study comprised an investigation of the increase in unconfined compressive strength over time achieved using different binders for both peats and a comprehensive series of triaxial and compression tests on one peat when mixed with cement. A stabilized structure (i.e., a stabilized surface layer and a stabilized column) was tested in a large testing chamber in Trinity College to compare the laboratory parameters with those interpreted from the results of the large-scale test. The study showed that the engineering properties of the peat were considerably improved when mixed with some binders, however the degrees of improvement were markedly different for the two peats that had similar organic content. The formation of the stabilized soil structure within the testing chamber significantly reduced the amount of settlement when compared with that interpreted for the untreated soil, and the rate of consolidation was accelerated. A finite element analysis of the recorded behaviour in the large testing chamber showed good agreement between the simulated and the experimental behaviour.Key words: peat, cement, stabilization, compressibility, column.

Résumé :
Peats are geotechnically problematic soil due to their high compressibility and low shear strength. Cement is widely used for the stabilization of peat by deep mixing method (DMM). This paper presents the results of the model study of compressibility property of peats stabilized with cement columns formed by DMM. The results of consolidation test, scanning electron micrographs (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX) showed that the compressibility of peats can be improved significantly by the installation of cement stabilized columns. The amount of cement used to form the column was observed to influence the engineering behaviour of treated tropical peats and it had more influence on sapric peat than on hemic and fibrous peats.

Résumé :
SummaryThis report describes the management of clinically significant, single level cervical spinal canal stenosis associated with articular facet hypertrophy in a three-year-old Great Dane dog, by combined surgical decompression and spinal stabilization. Spinal column stabilization was achieved by ventral application of two String of Pearls locking plates and subsequent decompression was accomplished by unilateral facetectomy. The six-month postoperative reassessment examination confirmed satisfactory clinical outcome with a complete return to normal activity, resolution of neurological deficits and maintenance of implant positioning.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT Though a large fraction of primary production and organic matter cycling in the oceans occurs on continental shelves dominated by sandy deposits, the microbial communities associated with permeable shelf sediments remain poorly characterized. Therefore, in this study, we provide the first detailed characterization of microbial diversity in marine sands of the South Atlantic Bight through parallel analyses of small-subunit (SSU) rRNA gene (Bacteria), nosZ (denitrifying bacteria), and amoA (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria) sequences. Communities were analyzed by parallel DNA extractions and clone library construction from both sediment core material and manipulated sediment within column experiments designed for geochemical rate determinations. Rapid organic-matter degradation and coupled nitrification-denitrification were observed in column experiments at flow rates resembling in situ conditions over a range of oxygen concentrations. Numerous SSU rRNA phylotypes were affiliated with the phyla Proteobacteria (classes Alpha-, Delta-, and Gammaproteobacteria), Planctomycetes, Cyanobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidetes. Detectable sequence diversity of nosZ and SSU rRNA genes increased in stratified redox-stabilized columns compared to in situ sediments, with the Alphaproteobacteria comprising the most frequently detected group. Alternatively, nitrifier communities showed a relatively low and stable diversity that did not covary with the other gene targets. Our results elucidate predominant phylotypes that are likely to catalyze carbon and nitrogen cycling in marine sands. Although overall diversity increased in response to redox stabilization and stratification in column experiments, the major phylotypes remained the same in all of our libraries, indicating that the columns sufficiently mimic in situ conditions.

Résumé :
✓The neutral zone (NZ) is a region of intervertebral motion around the neutral posture where little resistance is offered by the passive spinal column. The NZ appears to be a clinically important measure of spinal stability function. Its size may increase with injury to the spinal column, which in turn may result in spinal instability or low-back pain. Dynamic stabilization systems are designed to support and stabilize the spine while maintaining range of motion (ROM). The Stabilimax NZ device has been designed to reduce the NZ after spinal injury to treat pain while preserving ROM.

Résumé :
Winter cooling and persistent mixing for more than a quarter of year (November to early March) along the North Eastern Arabian Sea (NEAS) results in nutrient enrichment of the euphotic column thereby triggering biological production. Hydrographic characteristics of NEAS during Late Winter Monsoon (LWM) and Early Spring Inter Monsoon (ESIM) and the influence on biological production are overviewed here. Winter convective mixing signatures were evident during LWM with low SST (24°C), high SSS (36.4), deep mixed layers (>100 m) and increased surface nitrate (~1 µM). Open ocean waters observed high chlorophyll a (1–2 mg m−3) and microphytoplankton abundance (1.2–1.5 × 104 cells l−1). Diatoms and green Noctiluca scintillans were the major microphytoplankton identified. ESIM observed gradual stabilization of water column with curtailment of winter signatures and strengthening of Noctiluca scintillans blooms. Mesozooplankton biomass was higher during LWM and decreased towards ESIM with intensification of Noctiluca blooms. However during ESIM, abundance of gelatinous zooplankton occurred in the bloom region. Inter-annual variations were observed in the biological responses along with the hydrographic changes. Thus the convective process during winter monsoon and stabilization of the water column during ESIM plays a significant role in the production pattern of NEAS.

Résumé :
In recent decades there have been revolutionary technological advances in the management of traumatic spinal column injuries. Despite these advances, the basic principles of reduction and stabilization of vertebral fractures and dislocations remain similar to those proposed by ancient and medieval physicians. Theodoric of Bologna, in his text Chiurgica de Theodoric (ca. AD 1267), described an extracorporeal approach to the management of traumatic spinal column misalignments. Surprisingly, his techniques are still used in many instances by contemporary spine surgeons, despite the availability of a more advanced technological armamentarium than that existent in medieval times.
