Résumé :
Stamp collectors frequently donate their stamps to cultural heritage institutions. As digitization becomes more prevalent for other kinds of materials, it is worth exploring how cultural heritage institutions are digitizing their philatelic materials. This paper begins with a review of the literature about the purpose of metadata, current metadata standards, and metadata that are relevant to philatelists. The paper then examines the digital philatelic collections of four large cultural heritage institutions, discussing the metadata standards and elements employed by these institutions. The paper concludes with a recommendation to create international standards that describe metadata management explicitly for philatelic materials.

One of the two reviewers studied in high school to be a physicist. In the end, he became something else, but he never lost his awe of physics. The other reviewer never intended to become a physicist, but he sometimes asks himself why he didn’t become one. Today, they are both sociologists who practice their science on an action theory basis and believe that regularities exist in the world of social actions which can be perceived, understood, explained – and even used for making predictions.

Résumé :
The Russian pre-revolutionary book features many various provenance marks including marks of ownership. Such marks indicate that a particular item belongs to a particular owner. They can have forms of supralibros (or super ex-libris), ex-libris (or bookplates), book stamps, signatures and inscriptions. There are also “non-specific” ownership stamps and labels, which do not have indications of their book nature (such as phrases “from the books/library of...”, “ex-libris…”) and can be used on any objects. Usually these are word rubber stamps (rarely — labels) with a text consisting of a book owner’s name and occasionally some additional information (such as an owner’s address, title, etc.). In Russia, bibliophiles and bibliologists have been studying bookplates for about two centuries. However, there are still many blank spots in the history of the Russian bookplate. Regional book ownership marks are mostly unexplored. This article presents an attempt to describe and analyse book ownership marks of the Russian Far Eastern book owners. Studying of library holdings of 13 regional institutions and conducting bibliographic research allowed revealing 58 local marks of ownership (excluding signatures and inscriptions) that belonged to 23 local book collectors of the pre-revolutionary period. The study showed that they used all types of marks from supralibros to inscriptions, but mostly preferred the “non-specific” book stamps and super ex-libris. There was also established that the bookplate labels were particularly rare — the author discovered the only specimen in the Far Eastern State Research Library. The predominance of book stamps as marks of ownership can be explained by their multipurposeness, cheapness and easiness of manufacturing. Far Eastern book owners frequently used two or three different types of marks together on one book, for example, book stamp and supralibros, inscription and book stamp or supralibros and inscription, etc. Often one collector used several different stamps or supralibros: almost 40% of book collectors had two or three marks of ownership. At the same time, 11 of 23 book owners additionally marked their books with the inscriptions.

Résumé :
The article presents the definition of the study of stamps as a separate area of research of historical and cultural heritage of Ukraine. Views on the postage stamp as a historical pictorial source, through which the historical, national and cultural memory of people is fixed, are revealed. A review of the prerequisites for the scientific study of postage stamps in the field of humanities shows them as unique representatives of the national historical and cultural environment. The significance of addressing the issue of scientific study of postage stamps (philately) as a carrier of cultural and historical heritage is observed in the context of historical, philosophical, cultural and art studies. The practical value of the research is concentrated in the circles of collectors, profile museums of the post office, in archival funds, which keep general, documentary collections of postage stamps. In the process of the research, new research-interdisciplinary direct connections have emerged, which reveal aspects of philately from the point of view of psychology and philosophy. Taking into account all the achievements of interdisciplinary research, we consider historical explorations of preservation and translation of the historical and cultural heritage of Ukraine on postage stamps important and promising in the context of scientific and theoretical as well as empirical and applied Heritage Studies. All the above leads us to determine the purpose of the study, which can be described as identifying the conceptual foundations of the postage stamp not only as an independent object of cultural heritage, but also understanding the process of coding Ukraine’s sovereignty at different stages of statehood developing the postage stamp as a carrier of the historical and cultural heritage of the nation and the state. Scientific prospects for further elaboration of this topic in general and in its systemforming elements in particular are seen in the need to increase the importance of further scientific study of cultural heritage of Ukraine through the prism of postal miniature, where the object of study focuses on revealing the concepts and the practice of philately in stamp publishing cultural environment.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to a detailed analysis of issues of postage stamps of the world during the first half of the XIX - beginning of the XXI century. The study is based on the study of the image content of postage stamps of the standard type, which are the most widespread and intended for long-term technological use. The main content of the study is the analysis of symbols of statehood on the background of postage stamps, which act as a carrier of historical information. The postage stamp reflects the historical and cultural heritage of the country and the prospects for the development of culture around the world. Performing its main technological function, a postage stamp with elements of symbolic load automatically formulates – attributive. In this sense, it is not just an artistic miniature, it acts as a kind of matrix that has the ability to connect history with the present. The plots of postal issues cover significant events in the history of the state, with their assistance the historical and cultural heritage is popularized. Therefore, the postal administration of Ukraine is directly interested in the plots depicted in postal issues. Due to its wide distribution in the world, and based on the communicative function of the postage stamp, it is advisable to reproduce the symbols of statehood – flag, coat of arms, national currency, maps, parliament or legislature, national monuments, portraits of national and political leaders who testify to the sovereignty of the state. As a way of understanding the past and perceiving the present, the postage stamp expresses a single concept: historical memory – artistic image - the sovereignty of the state. Possessing a semiotic aspect, the postage stamp fits into the general symbolic, symbolic theory of the image both art, and information. The high artistic level and content of the plots are visual forms that encourage the study of national symbols and form a positive attitude of domestic and foreign collectors to the issuing state.

Résumé :
Stamp collecting and industrial capitalism in the United States emerged simultaneously in the mid-nineteenth century. England issued the first government postage stamp in 1840, and other nations quickly adopted the idea. The United States printed its first official stamp in 1847, although it was preceded by the provisionals issued by local postmasters. Postage stamps were a product of the industrial revolution. The adoption of the prepaid penny post in England, while opposed by the General Post Office, was widely supported by large merchants who understood that a low-cost, single-rate system was vital to the communication demanded by an increasingly national market. The adhesive label was originally conceived by the English postal reformer, Rowland Hill, as a convenience for illiterates who would not be able to write addresses on the official envelopes that he preferred as proof of prepayment. Within a decade, almost every major nation in the world had borrowed this device, which became a symbol of the economic transformation of the nineteenth century. I would argue that the collecting of these tokens was a microcosmic performance of the system that created them. Stamp collectors took on many of the key roles of actors in the market economy and played out various conflicts embodied in the larger society in the philatelic arena.

Résumé :
The article deals with the memorial aspect of the Brazilian philatelic bibliography. The research aimed at analyzingthe Catalog of Postage Stamps in Braziledited by Rolf Harald Meyer. The research procedure was bibliographic and documentary. The catalogs were accessed in a private library of a bibliophilatelist in Recife. Scientific literature was accessed through BRAPCI, BDTD Capes and SciELO. The survey resulted in a sample of 31 editions of the Catalog produced between 1975 and 2019. This sample was grouped into 3 different time periods: 1975 to 1986,1987 to 1999 and 2000 to 2019 and the data tabulated in Excel. Historical and editorial aspects, data on layout, printing, physical constitution and information architecture were identified. It was concluded that the Catalog has its brand consolidated in Brazil and abroad. It represents the symbolic work of collaborative knowledge between philatelic collectors and traders. It is proposedfor future studies that the Catalog goes beyond graphic studies and information organization and fits into the field of cultural transfer of transatlantic knowledge and the history of the book. It ratifies the postage stamp and its information regime as an object of research in several and different areas.

Résumé :
The need for clean and sustainable energy sources has witnessed a sudden upsurge in recent years owing to rising environmental degradation and climate disruption brought on by an overdependence on fossil fuels [1-3]. Electrochemical energy conversion technology is a crucial complement to the storage and on-demand utilization of renewable energy resources [4-6]. Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have gained a significant research upsurge in recent times owing to their attractive potential for large-scale energy storage applications. In addition to low cost and naturally abundant raw materials, AZIBs technology offers competitive electrochemical performance and compatibility with water-based electrolyte systems, thereby eliminating the safety concerns associated with prevalent lithium-based battery technology. Moreover, multivalent AZIBs offer the opportunity to attain high energy and power density by permitting multiple electron transfers during reversible electrochemical operations [7]. In the context of AZIBs, significant research efforts are being actively pursued to develop high energy density cathode materials and to address the issue of Zn dendrite formation [8]. However, the selection of stable and low-cost current collectors is equally important as it serves as a bridge between the battery components and the external circuit, thereby influencing the battery capacity and its rate capability [9-10]. In this work, we have analyzed the electrochemical behavior of potential current collectors that are used globally in battery applications, namely Ni, Al, carbon paper, Cu mesh, graphite, and stainless steel in near-neutral aqueous ZnSO4 electrolyte (pH value = 5-6). The electrochemical stability of different current collectors has been investigated using linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques for their application as anode and cathode collectors. Scanning electron microscopy analysis has also been performed to understand the sign of corrosion post-electrochemical study. With stability up to 2.3 V w.r.t. Zn/Zn2+, Ni has proved to be the most corrosion-resistant current collector among the tested collectors on the cathode side. Although Zn itself is sufficiently stable at the anode side than any other current collector under the ZnSO4 electrolyte environment, Ni has shown considerable stability. Nonetheless, understanding the electrochemical stability of current collectors for AZIBs is a vital step in their design and future practical applications. Résumé :
Book bindings of the 18th century, like all bindings of the period of hand press, are unique objects of individual labour, they were made to order and could be done much later than the date of printing. Russian bindings of this time are overwhelmingly anonymous, do not have the stamp and signature of the bookbinder or any written evidence of the binding customer, which makes it difficult to attribute them. The Department of Rare Books (Book Museum) of the Russian State Library (RSL) stores books by a major collector of the 18th century P.K. Khlebnikov, bound in the late 1750s — 1780s in one bookbinding workshop. The owner sought to record in super-exlibrises his career growth and changes in social status, and it helps to date the binding work within a frame of few years. The bindings were decorated with gold embossing using different stamps and roles. Over time, the bookbinderʼs tools were enriched, new stamps were used in embossing, and the old ones were put out of use. Linking the use of a particular stamp to a specific time helps to date other similar bindings made in the same workshop. So, impressions of stamps that came into use no earlier than 1775 were identified on the bindings of books from the library of Prince I.A. Vyazemsky. Identical prints are also found on bindings from other collections. The article provides an example of Russian edition of the 1730s in a luxurious morocco binding with a similar embossing. Information about the stamps used in P.K. Khlebnikovʼs bindings assisted to significantly adjust the time of the masterʼs work and date the binding to the second half of the 1770s — 1780s.Thus, it is obvious that the identification value of individual stamps of gold tooling when describing the bindings of the 18th century is high. The detailed description of decorative elements with photofixation of prints, the creation of a kind of stamp bank would make it possible to identify other arrays of bindings of close origin, and biographical knowledge about the owners would help both in the localization of hypothetically reconstructed bookbinding workshops and in more accurate dating of samples.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT Postage stamps are small works of art seen by people worldwide that can be used effectively in education. The first paleontological stamp was released by India in 1951. Since then, over 4000 stamps with fossils, paleontologists, museums, and collecting sites have been issued by almost 200 countries. Stamps that illustrate fossils or reconstructions are intrinsically interesting and popular with many of the millions of stamp collectors. All disciplines of paleontology are represented, but dinosaurs are by far the most common subject, although even bacteria appear on a few stamps. Most of the stamps were scientifically accurate at the time they were issued though some artists took artistic liberties to fashion unique stamps. Overall, the stamps are artistic and educational because their small sizes and low cost make them easily accessible for classroom activities, exhibits, and presentations. They cover topics such as biodiversity, geology, ecology, oceanography, and evolution, among others. Paleophilately has provided art, education, joy, and happiness to people worldwide.

In Oman, postage stamps are more than simply little bits of paper used to pre-pay mail delivery and/or to be collected by philatelists (stamp collectors). The topics depicted on these stamps can also play an important role in promoting both the national identity and goals of the state. Such was the case of stamps issued by the Sultanate of Oman postal service during the reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al-Said which were used to reinforce His Majesty’s goal of the modernization of the state within the context of its cultural traditions. Abstract Americans outside Massachusetts proved so adept in following Boston’s violent example that we may suspect that they did not need it. Needed or not, Boston’s action offered a model that captured attention everywhere in America. Revulsion from the Stamp Act permeated social groups of all sorts and came to focus, almost naturally it seems, on the men chosen to distribute the stamped paper—on the tax collectors and their friends. By the end of October all but two of the stamp distributors had resigned, usually in order to save their lives and property; and of the remaining two, one, William Houston of North Carolina, gave way on November 16, and the other, George Angus, appointed for Georgia, did not arrive in America until January 1766.

No person better defined the collaborative gestalt of queer Chicano art practices than Joey Terrill. As a principal figure in the Escandalosa Circle, he bore witness to his friends’ HIV infection and eventual demise. This chapter examines the queer visual testimonios engendered by his scene paintings and portraits. As it follows his excursions between coasts, it shows him rendering sights of contagion, whether on a Fire Island beach in New York or a hazardous garden in Beverly Hills. Terrill’s retrospectively eyes his HIV transmission in self-analytical portraits tempered by a pathogenic time stamp, creating what is arguably the most consistent visual account of AIDS in American art. The implications of his queer visual testimonios on canvas and paper have profound meaning for collectors rearticulating their domestic environments with traces of Terrill’s retrospective examinations of HIV infection and terminal illness.

This chapter describes the development of Florida’s Shipwreck Tagging Archaeological Management Program (STAMP), a unique citizen science program designed to monitor shipwreck sites and disarticulated timbers. Historically, Florida’s coastal regions have been some of the most treacherous navigable waterways for mariners due to high wave turbidity, oceanic currents, and meteorological phenomena. As a result, thousands of ships have ultimately met their demise along Florida coasts. The Florida Public Archaeological Network (FPAN) began STAMP in 2019 to utilize citizen scientists to assist archaeologists in tracking the movement and degradation these sites and materials. Résumé :
he intention of the current paper is to explore Walter Bendix Schönflies Benjamin’s (1892–1940) essays, especially “Unpacking My Library” (1931), in which the theorist focuses on collections, and Stefan Zweig’s (1881–1942) story “Buchmendel” / “Mendel the Book-Dealer” (1929). W. B. S. Benjamin’s views on bibliophilia, the relationship of the narrative with the fragment and other similar questions linked to the philosophy of literature are as scattered as the rare items collected by the obsessed bookworm he mentions, however, it is possible to compare them with S. Zweig’s vivid story about the bookkeeper and librarian Mendel, who memorizes “every plant, every infusoria and every star in the ever-changing and restless cosmos of the world of books”. Vladimir Nabokov’s (1899–1977) and John Robert Fowles’s (1926–2005) real and symbolic collections of butterflies, Umberto Eco’s (1932–2016) “The Infinity of Lists” and other examples serve as Ariadne’s thread that leads to the main motivation for collecting, which could be the owner’s or heir’s desire, but not solely that. Likewise, collecting can be prompted by apparent or real self-absorption, excitement, and also by old age (although children also tend to collect, of course). The hoarding individual often faces confusion, isolates himself/herself, and gradually becomes lonely. Most often, the psychological portrait of this person is, as follows: an eccentric man for the reasons mentioned above, often a typical bachelor, because he does not need to account to anyone for time and money spent outside the family. You can also notice that he has been collecting stamps, stickers, cards, tickets, different [fruit] labels, pins, magnets, comic books, vinyl records, toys or dolls, coins, rocks, seashells, herbaria (etc.) since childhood. Collecting also perfectly helps to cope with various memories or traumas; it can be compensation for failures in other spheres of life. When a collector passes away, his relatives can keep the collection intact or donate/sell it all. The works of both authors – W. B. S. Benjamin and S. Zweig – and their fragments, viewed through the prism of literature and philosophy, allow us to get to know the world of collectors in German-speaking countries and create the image of a collector as a peculiar person whose fate is “drowning” in his/her books or at least a chance to “grow into them”.

Résumé :
"The debate over whether there is a single unifying scientific method or a variety of methods, each of which is applied to a different discipline of science, is still a difficult one. Popper idea of refutation was a criticism to the inductive method and claimed the need to submit theories to falsification. His thesis ended up being a demarcation of science and pseudoscience. But the question remains: do all sciences follow the same scientific method? Namely because discoveries in geology have to overcome time and space enormous scales, geologist have been called by Lord Kelvin as “stamp collectors”. Having started as a field science, and even having been denied by Hutton as an experimental science, modelling in geology only took place at the end of the 19th century by the hand of Sir James Hall. The need to mirror scientists’ methods is a demand of inquiry-based teaching, but few geology teachers have correct knowledge about the method used by geologists. In the present study, a survey was undertaken online with the main objective of investigating what is teachers’ knowledge about the (geo)scientific method. Participants were 108 geology middle and secondary teachers in Portugal. The majority of respondents were women (n=79; 73.1%) and the average age was 46 years old. All participants were graduated, but 51 (47.2%) had a master and 5 (4.6%) had a Ph.D. The results showed erroneous conceptions that are commonly reflected in inquiry-based teaching classrooms, namely regarding the scientific method but also about investigative competencies and geology as an experimental science. The majority of the teachers’ said that there only exists one scientific method for all sciences (n=49; 45.4%) and that it has a fundamentally linear nature from observation to conclusion (n=54; 50.0%). The scientific method was claimed as needed to allow the confirmation of hypothesis by many teachers (n=44; 40.7%). Some participants referred Uniformitarianism as a principle that justifies the historical and interpretive reasoning of geologist (n=48; 44.4%), but not so many referred the analogic reasoning (n=28; 25.9%). Teachers also referred to critical and systemic thinking as scientific competencies (n=72; 66.7%) and gave less importance to others like observation and argumentation (n=27; 25.0%). Results analysis corroborate that an inquiry-base teaching methodology requires history of geology and an epistemological reflection to be integrated in teachers’ initial training and professional development. The epistemology behind geology classes has to be taught to eradicate alternative conception about the scientific method."

Résumé :
The ancient city of Tyras was in the late classical and Hellenistic times an important economic center of the North-Western Black Sea region. Ceramic stamps are an important source of external relations of the polis during this period. The monograph considered in the article deals with this group of archaeological material. Based on an unpublished manuscript of ceramic stamps from the Northern Black Sea region (IOSPE III), the archive of the Athenian agora, the corpus of Rhodian stamps from Alexandria, as well as materials from a number of museum collections, the authors have thoroughly rechecked the stamps published in the monograph. A careful analysis of photographs and stamps with the given readings and, accordingly, the interpretations of individual copies, made it possible to reveal a lot of erroneous reconstructions of legends, incorrect dates and definitions of production centers. This is especially true for Rhodes (102 corrections and clarifications) and Sinope (66). The corrections confirm the analogies from publications and the indicated sources.

Résumé :
In order to analyze the motion of motorcycles and other vehicles, it is desirable to measure and record data using a combination of data loggers and video and audio recording devices and accurately integrate the collected data. For this purpose, it is necessary to be able to record the position and time at which data was recorded with sufficient accuracy. In recent years, it has become relatively easy to determine the recorded position with an accuracy on the order of cm by using high-precision satellite positioning such as RTK-GNSS. On the other hand, determining the position of a moving object from data timestamps with an accuracy of cm order often requires a time accuracy of 1 millisecond or better. The time stamps used in conventional data loggers, general video cameras, smartphones, and other motion sensors and video recording functions cannot easily achieve a time accuracy of 1 millisecond due to limitations such as the accuracy of the built-in clock generator and the effects of communication delays related to synchronization. The accuracy of the built-in clock generators of consumer-use equipment may have an error on the order of 100 ppm due to various factors. This error cannot be ignored, as even a recording of only 10 seconds cannot guarantee a time accuracy of 1 millisecond. The problem is further complicated when software is involved. In particular, there is a video camera in which the video frame interval fluctuates on the order of several tens of percent due to load fluctuations in the video encoding. A calibration signal for synchronization is used to guarantee the time accuracy of data loggers. In professional equipment, high-precision time management is performed by SMPTE timecode (SMPTE12M-1, 2008) and IEEE1588, etc. However, it is not common in consumer equipment. In general, synchronizing data loggers in remote locations or between different media, such as inertial motion and video/audio recording, is not easy. This paper proposes a method and system for time synchronization between independent data loggers, motion sensors, and different media, such as video and audio, within a 1-millisecond error. The proposed method takes advantage of the fact that the one-second timing pulses (PPS signals) generated by typical GNSS receivers have accuracy on the order of 100 nanoseconds for synchronization purposes. The proposed system achieves synchronization by embedding PPS signals in an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and by displaying LEDs synchronized with PPS signals in the camera images. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the main parts of the prototype experimental system with the motorcycle. A logger collects ob- servation data from GNSS, IMU, and vehicle information, and a video camera records video images. The GNSS receiver connected to the logger receives correction information via a server from the electronic reference point. It performs satellite positioning with centimeter-level positional accuracy and nanosecond-level time accuracy using the RTK method. The IMU device used in the proposed system, simultaneously records PPS signals at the sampling timing and can identify the time with the accuracy of the IMU sampling frequency. Using our team’s previous work (Ando et al., 2020), we can also identify the time with even higher accuracy by analyzing the IMU data over a longer period. This method takes advantage of the stable and constant interval nature of IMU sampling. In the data evaluation with a sampling frequency of 1 kHz, the time was identified with an average error of 0.136 milliseconds. Although some video cameras can input an electrical signal for time synchronization, the timing of data encoding and the computational load may cause a discrepancy with the recorded time. Therefore, the proposed method employs a method in which a synchronizing LED is projected in the actual video image. Suppose the frame rate during video recording is stable and constant. In that case, the shooting time can be accurately determined by analyzing the image of a single LED lit by the PPS signal using the same method as in the IMU case described above. In our evaluation using an action camera with a frame rate of 240 fps and a shutter speed of 1/3840 seconds, we have confirmed that the time is determined with an accuracy of about 0.4 milliseconds. In the proposed system, the GNSS LED Beacon shown in Figure 2 was developed with multiple LEDs to enable highly accurate time synchronization even with video cameras whose frame rate is not stable. Figure 3 shows the outline of the LED matrix drive circuit. The 8x8 LED matrix is lit by a combination of time signals (10 bits) in 1-millisecond increments generated by resetting a counter with a PPS signal, which is fed by a 16 kHz asynchronous clock input. It is possible to read the time with up to 1 millisecond accuracy directly from the video image taken by the GNSS LED beacon. The time can be read directly from the video image of the GNSS LED beacon with an accuracy of up to 1 millisecond. The snapshot in Figure 4 shows the GNSS LED Beacon attached to the handlebars of the motorcycle and the 360-degree camera capturing driving images. Figure 5 is a screenshot of the operation logs of the brake (red) and turn signal (yellow) as the trajectories shifted 30 cm above and to the left and right sides of the motorcycle’s travel path and displayed on GoogleEarth.
