The work of Stephen Taylor Architects extends from urban strategies to the individual dwelling. Underlying this continuum is a deep understanding of the city and its component parts and a concern to develop typologies that contribute to civic life. Taylor studied in London at South Bank University and the Royal College of Art (RCA) and worked first for Richard Reid, his former tutor at South Bank and the author of a number of studies of housing types. After brief periods in the offices of Richard Rogers, Stanton Williams and others, Taylor established a partnership with Andrew Houlton in 1993. For several years in that partnership and for the five years subsequently, Taylor has occupied the same site in Shoreditch, east London. To begin with, the practice occupied the basement and he lived over the shop. As the office expanded, it colonised a set of spaces on three floors organised around a small court. We met there in a space at the back, beyond the court, and began by discussing the arrangement of the spaces.

Abstract The article is a case study demonstrating that the Bible at the end of the 19th century could still function as a common rhetorical tool, a frame of reference, and a common court of appeal in important public debates. The case in question is the Anglophone debate over women’s rights, voice, and vote on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean around 1890. The article analyzes three different lay positions represented by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Christina Rossetti, and Heber Hart. They represent three different directions that reception of the Bible with regard to gender equality and women’s authorial voice could take in this period. The article also argues that a concept of gender equality goes several centuries further back than what is often thought, and that the early development of the concept in a pre-secularized intellectual environment needs much further scholarly attention.

ABSTRACT On the 19th of August 1989 at 2:30 p.m., a fracture occurred in a pipeline carrying Venezuelan crude oil from a shipping terminal at Tranmere to the Shell (U.K.) Ltd. oil refinery at Stanlow, on the Mersey Estuary, England. 150 metric tons of oil were released into the estuary before the pipeline was sealed; tidal currents widely distributed the oil within a tidal cycle. The Mersey Estuary is heavily industrialized and urbanized but does retain extensive areas of salt marsh and intertidal mud flats which are internationally important for wildfowl and wading birds. Cleanup operations were coordinated by the two local fire brigades whose areas of responsibility included impacted shoreline. Input to the response came from government, local authorities, specialist consultants, and various other interested parties. The occurrence of the spill on one of the highest spring tides of the year and under favorable weather conditions served to lessen the environmental impacts. Less than two weeks after the spill, Shell (U.K.) and Cheshire County Council set up the Mersey Oil Spill Project Advisory Group, with a membership drawn from independent scientific groups, which would monitor the environmental effects of the spill and publish its findings. The primary report of the advisory group is a detailed historical record of the spill incident, the response to it, and the coordination of that response, as well as the lessons learned by the involved parties. Further studies consider the persistence of the oil, and its effects on birds, invertebrates, vegetation, and algae. Recommendations have already led to a review of the local contingency plan and the commissioning of work to produce specific cleanup guidelines and sensitivity maps for the region. In February 1990, a court action brought by the newly formed National Rivers Authority led to Shell (U.K.) Ltd. being fined £1 million due to the pollution arising from this incident.

Bureau of provincial national councils as appeal instances against penal college in the years 1951–1957 on the example of the Presidium of the Provincial National Council in Zielona Góra 
 In 1951, the communist authorities introduced the institution of a penal college in Poland. This institution was modeled on the legislation in force in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Colleges were not courts but performed judicial functions. The fi nal instance of appeal against the rulings of the colleges was the Presidium of the Provincial National Council. The article showed that a large part of the rulings issued by colleges in the Zielona Góra region in the years 1951–1957 were annulled by the Presidium. College rulings were often in confl ict with applicable law. 
 
 Die Präsidien der Nationalräte der Woiwodschaften als Berufungsinstanzen gegen die verwaltungsstrafrechtliche Rechtsprechung in den Jahren 1951–1958 am Beispiel des Präsidiums des Nationalrates der Woiwodschaft Grünberg [Zielona Góra]
 Im Jahre 1951 haben die kommunistischen Behörden in Polen die Institution eines Kollegiums für Ordnungswidrigkeiten eingeführt. Diese Institution wurde nach der in der Sowjetunion geltenden Gesetzgebung organisiert. Die Kollegien waren keine Gerichte, sie übten jedoch richterliche Funktionen aus. Die letzte Berufungsinstanz gegen die Beschlüsse der Kollegien war das Präsidium des Nationalrates der Woiwodschaft [Prezydium Wojewódzkiej Rady Narodowej]. In dem Beitrag wurde gezeigt, dass das Präsidium eine große Zahl der Entscheidungen der Kollegien, die in den Jahren 1951–1958 in der Woiwodschaft Grünberg ergangen, aufgehoben hatte. Die Entscheidungen der Kollegien standen oft im Widerspruch mit dem geltenden Recht.

The paper examines a complex web of domestic and external issues which have both provoked a systemic crisis in Venezuela and, at the same time, determined its specificity in comparison with the wave of protests sweeping across Latin America in 2019.The authors conclude that the escalation of the conflict in Venezuela was caused not only by the standoff between the legislative and the executive branches of the government, but also by the split of the whole society into proponents and opponents of ‘socialism of the 21st century’. The contradictions have led to the formation of the parallel branches of power: two presidents, two parliaments and two supreme courts (one of them in exile) which de facto coexist in the country and each claims exclusive rights and legitimacy.The authors also stress that the situation in Venezuela has obvious regional consequences. The miscalculations of the incumbent president were used in election campaigns in other Latin American countries and became one of the reasons for the defeat of left candidates, the subsequent ‘right drift’ leading to the isolation of the republic. The new political landscape has also affected the architecture of integration associations, which failed to develop a unified position toward the Bolivarian regime.Furthermore, in a current heightened state of international tensions Venezuela has turned into a theatre of international rivalry and conflict involving all the key subjects of world politics. The United States, China, Russia and the European Union compete for the energy resources of the country and pursue their own strategic interests. The inability or unwillingness of external forces to reach compromise and to bring the parties to the negotiating table can pose a threat to peace and international security.As a result, Venezuela has become one of the most turbulent countries in the region. At the same time, the repeated outbursts of protest waves are significantly different from popular uprisings in other Latin American states. In the worst-case scenario, a constantly worsening situation may result in a social explosion which threatens to make the Bolivarian Republic another hot spot of the planet.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critically explore the impact of anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) on young people with mild learning disabilities. In an attempt to identify why young people (under the age of 18) with learning disabilities are exposed to the criminal justice system, an emerging body of evidence is considered. The research provides an insight into some of the difficulties vulnerable young people may encounter, such as receiving unrealistic prohibitions and the lack of support provided after receiving a court order. The research also highlights the lack of professional awareness and understanding of learning disabilities and considers the level of training available to professionals. The paper closes with a discussion of the themes identified from the literature reviewed and some of the changes proposed by the coalition government regarding the future of the criminal justice system. Design/methodology/approach – Although a strict systematic review of the literature was not required for the literature review, a less rigorous systematic approach was employed. When searching for literature, the general principles and guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration were employed, this included inclusion and exclusion criteria. The eligibility criteria guided the focus of the literature review and determined the relevance of the research. During the literature review it was recognised that much of the research is discussion/review based, and currently there is a limited amount of empirical research available. An eco-systems perspective was employed to consider the connections between young people, the environment and anti-social behaviour (ASB). Findings – The findings from the literature review, illustrate a growing body of evidence which suggests that young people with learning disabilities have been “caught up” in ASB measures. It is positive that more recently, there has been a much needed focus on early identification and diversion away from the criminal justice system, for those with mental health conditions and learning disabilities. The research findings presented by Cant and Standen, and Talbot, provide possible explanations as to why vulnerable young people are made subject to ASBOs. Indeed this lack of sufficient training has not gone unnoticed by other researchers. Research limitations/implications – Although the author is aware of the valuable insight qualitative research can provide, the methodological limitations raise questions regarding the validity of the research the author has considered, especially as most of the research the author has drawn upon is based on exploratory approaches. Nevertheless, the concurring themes drawn from the research findings raise much curiosity around the potential links between disability awareness training and the identification of young people with mild learning disabilities. Practical implications – Despite the governments recent proposal to abolish the ASBO and introduce a new approach to tackling ASB, it appears unclear as to how the new measures will differ from the existing ones. The recent proposed measures are set out in the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. Although the accompanying guidance for frontline professionals clearly sets out the need for early intervention, which sits alongside a new menu of ASB powers, including the Criminal Behaviour Order (which seems very similar to the ASBO), it is disappointing that the guidance does not give any direction of how new measures will impact on young people with learning disabilities. Social implications – Although the ASBO was not initially designed to target children and young people, it is clear from the literature that certain families and young people are often singled out and labelled as “anti-social”. It is unsurprising, that children and young people from poor families, with low educational attainment, limited employment opportunities and live in the most marginalised and deprived communities are amongst those who are singled out as being particularly problematic. Originality/value – The research findings have helped me to understand some of the potential difficulties vulnerable young people may encounter if they come into contact with the criminal justice system. As there appears to be a lack of empirical research available which considers the connections between learning disabilities and ASBOs, further research within this area of practice would be beneficial. The research invites an alternative perspective which adds to the existing literature.

On the 11th of October in 2021, about 2.8 million boxes (i.e. 57 million pieces) of untaxed cigarettes were seized by the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary (hereinafter: NTCA) from a Ukrainian barge in the town of Paks and on the next day in a warehouse in Pest county. The confiscated cargo was hidden in rock salt sling-bags. Four perpetrators have been arrested during this HUF 5.5 billion value case, which is an unprecedented detection in the history of Hungarian Customs related to cigarette smuggling.The organised group of Hungarian citizens of Ukrainian origin caused almost HUF 4 billion in damage to the budget through the fraud of VAT and excise duties. During the operation, three persons were caught red-handed and the fourth suspect was captured by Customs Officers during the escape. All of them were detained, and the court ordered their arrest. The NTCA was investigating suspected budget fraud and money laundering. The perpetrators could face up to 20 years in prison. The international aspects of the operation were coordinated by Europol under international criminal and judicial cooperation. Thanks to the great analytical work done by customs investigators, a network of companies was uncovered and an invoicing chain was established, which, through international cooperation, led to Polish, Czech, Romanian and Ukrainian companies. It has been revealed that they, not for the first time, benefited from this method. But was the unravelling of the case a complete success, or were there mistakes that could weaken the security of the Danube River? In the light of this case study, what are the possibilities for further developing international cooperation on the Danube?Streszczenie11 października 2021 r. około 2,8 miliona kartonów (57 milionów sztuk) nieopodatkowanych papierosów zostało skonfiskowanych przez Krajową Administrację Podatkową i Celną Węgier (dalej: NTCA) z ukraińskiej barki w mieście Paks, a następnego dnia w magazynie w okręgu Peszt. Zorganizowana grupa obywateli węgierskich narodowości ukraińskiej w wyniku oszustwa związanego z podatkiem VAT i akcyzą spowodowała szkody w budżecie w wysokości prawie 4 mld HUF. Podczas operacji na gorącym uczynku zostały zatrzymane trzy osoby, a czwarty podejrzany przez funkcjonariuszy celnych — podczas ucieczki. Na mocy deczyji sądu sprawcy zostli aresztowani. NTCA prowadziła dochodzenie w sprawie podejrzenia o popełnienie oszustw budżetowych i pranie brudnych pieniędzy. Sprawcom może grozić do 20 lat więzienia. Międzynarodowe aspekty operacji były koordynowane przez Europol w ramach międzynarodowej współpracy karnej i sądowej. Ogromna praca analityczna wykonana przez śledczych celnych pozwoliła wykryć sieć firm i stworzyć łańcuch fakturowania, co w ramach współpracy międzynarodowej doprowadziło do firm polskich, czeskich, rumuńskich i ukraińskich. Un grupo organizado de ciudadanos húngaros de origen ucraniano causó un perjuicio presupuestario de casi 4.000 millones de HUF mediante el fraude del IVA y los impuestos especiales. Durante la operación, tres personas fueron detenidas in fraganti y un cuarto sospechoso fue capturado por agentes de aduanas cuando huía. Todos fueron detenidos y el tribunal ordenó su arresto. Die beschlagnahmte Ladung war in Säcken mit Steinsalz versteckt. Vier Täter wurden im Zusammenhang mit dem Fall verhaftet, und der Wert der beschlagnahmten Waren belief sich auf 5,5 Milliarden HUF, was eine beispiellose Aufdeckung in der Geschichte des ungarischen Zolls im Zusammenhang mit Zigarettenschmuggel darstellte. Eine organisierte Gruppe ungarischer Staatsbürger ukrainischer Herkunft verursachte durch den Betrug mit Mehrwert- und Verbrauchssteuern einen Haushaltsverlust von fast 4 Milliarden HUF. Die internationalen Aspekte der Operation wurden von Europol im Rahmen der internationalen strafrechtlichen und justiziellen Zusammenarbeit koordiniert. Dank der enormen analytischen Arbeit der Zollfahnder war es möglich, ein Netz von Unternehmen und eine Rechnungskette aufzubauen, die über internationale Zusammenarbeit zu polnischen, tschechischen, rumänischen und ukrainischen Unternehmen führte. Wie sich herausstellte, war dies nicht das erste Mal, dass sie diese Methode anwandten. War jedoch die Aufdeckung des Falls ein voller Erfolg, oder wurden Fehler begangen, die die Sicherheit der Donau untergraben könnten? Национальным налоговым и таможенным управлением Венгрии (далее: NTCA) с украинской баржи в городе Пакш и на следующий день — на складе в округе Пешт было изъято около 2,8 млн картонных коробок (57 млн штук) сигарет, без акцизных налогов. Организованная группа, состоящая из граждан Венгрии украинской национальности нанесла ущерб бюджету почти на 4 миллиарда форинтов в результате мошенничества с налогами и акцизой. В ходе операции с поличным были задержаны три человека, а четвертый подозреваемый —- задержан во время побега сотрудниками таможни. По решению суда преступники были арестованы. NTCA проводило расследование по подозрению в мошенничестве в сфере бюджетных расходов и отмывании денег. Преступники могут быть приговорены к срокам до 20 лет лишения свободы. Операция в рамках международного уголовного и судебного сотрудничества координировались Европолом. Огромная аналитическая работа, проведенная таможенными следователями, позволила обнаружить сеть компаний и установить схему выставления счет-фактур, которая в рамках международного сотрудничества довела до польских, чешских, румынских и украинских компаний. Выяснилось, что этот метод использовался не в первый раз. Однако, следует ли считать, что раскрытие данного преступления оказалось полностью успешным? Были ли совершены ошибки, которые могут повлиять на безопасность Дуная? Каковы возможности дальнейшего развития международного сотрудничества на Дунае в контексте представленного исследования?

The cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White says that we can often count the fixed points of elements of a cyclic group acting on a combinatorial set by plugging roots of unity into a polynomial related to this set. One of the most impressive instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is a theorem of Rhoades asserting that the set of plane partitions in a rectangular box under the action of promotion exhibits cyclic sieving. In Rhoades's result the sieving polynomial is the size generating function for these plane partitions, which has a well-known product formula due to MacMahon. We extend Rhoades's result by also considering symmetries of plane partitions: specifically, complementation and transposition. The relevant polynomial here is the size generating function for symmetric plane partitions, whose product formula was conjectured by MacMahon and proved by Andrews and Macdonald. Finally, we explain how these symmetry results also apply to the rowmotion operator on plane partitions, which is closely related to promotion.

Repo Man and Paris, Texas firmly established Harry Dean Stanton as what one writer called "the patron saint of the edgy set." In his sixties now, he hung out with the so-called "Brat Pack"--Sean Penn, Madonna, Johnny Depp. He was partying with Robert De Niro at the Chateau Marmond the night comedian John Belushi died of a drug overdose there. Dan Tana's in West Hollywood was his favorite hangout, however, and he held court there with pals like actors Ed Begley Jr. and Dabney Coleman. The lead roles he'd expected after Paris, Texas never came, but important supporting roles did. He rejoined Sam Shepard in Fool for Love in 1985, and he widened his following with his performances in Pretty in Pink in 1986 and Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation in 1988. More important, however, was his work with director David Lynch, including four Lynch projects in the 1990s and several more after the turn of the century. The weirdness of the Lynchian world even seemed to touch his personal life with an armed robbery at his home in 1996 and the embezzlement of his personal finances by his financial manager a few years later.

This chapter discusses the trial of Clyde Kennard in a segregated courtroom inside the Forrest County Courthouse. It details how Attorney Jess Brown represented his client and was skeptical of the jury. Brown addressed the court, declaring that the prosecution had failed to prove its case against Kennard, and motioned for the judge to declare Kennard as not guilty. However, the state's case against Kennard had its problems. Judge Stanton Hall overruled the motion and instructed bailiffs to bring back the jury, and the trial would continue as such. The chapter also looks into the contradiction between testimonies and witnesses.

Miroslav Krleža’s novel Na rubu pameti (On the Edge of Reason) was published in German under a title that may at first sight seem curious: Ohne mich. Eine einsame Revolu-tion. According to certain sources Krleža had nothing against the title. Perhaps because of the word revolution. If one considers that Krleža’s expressionism offers one of the most im-portant starting points for the Yugoslav avant-garde, it will be easier to understand the affinity of his literary texts for the revolution and revolutionary topics. However, a signifi-cant change in the way he deals with these topics can be observed in different periods of his creative work. Whereas Hrvatska rapsodija (Croatian Rhapsody) offers revolutionary pro-gress depicted in a train that cannot and does not want to stop, On the Edge of Reason, the novel he wrote twenty years later, speaks of the disappointment of an individual who does not belong to the “revolutionary class”, but feels close to it. In this closeness, the concept of “justice” occupies the central position, diverging from the ethical content and questioning the unbearable social conditions. It crystallises the more than conspicuous discrepancy between justice and law in concrete legal proceedings. This knowledge will enable the anonymous narrator to thoroughly confront the institutions of the system. Shaken by the injustice of the court, the distinguished attorney will slide further and further into madness, as he moves away from his social class. Based on his advanced destruction, two things beco-me clear: not only the injustice towards lower classes of society, but also the injustice affec-ting him personally showing him what happens to those who oppose existing juridical con-stants. It seems we are told that his spiritual fabric, his melancholy and pessimism do not allow him to remain a revolutionary. Therefore, his revolution is paradoxically “lonely”, pe-trified in a status in which the materialisation of revolution is – impossible.
