Résumé :
Concentration breakthrough data collected by the USGS at Stanton, Texas during tracer injection tests of the Ogallala aquifer are simulated using an approximate and an exact analytical solution of conservative solute transport in a radial flow field from an injection well. Data were collected at selected depths in the aquifer and at fully screened observation wells. The concentration breakthrough data were simulated with the analytical solutions by finding the values of hydraulic conductivity and dispersivity which provided the best fit of the data. The exact analytical solution is the appropriate solution for analyzing data collected at the Stanton site. Both dispersivity and hydraulic conductivity vary greatly at the site. Bromide is considered to be conservative. Boron distribution coefficients are determined by using hydraulic conductivities estimated by simulation of boron and bromide breakthrough curves. Additional tracers used in the experiments at the Stanton site include aniline, phenolphthalein and benzoate.

Saengprapan, Pichaiwat. « Le décor chez Stanley Kubrick ». Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011TOU20064.

Questions on film sets always seem to open up new fields of research, especially when the film is by Stanley Kubrick. Certainly, his scenic design conveys the emotional state of the characters illustrates the atmosphere of the sequences and even arouses our aesthetic pleasure. Kubrick’s film sets are a dominating element for his film language. Many of them are a part of our collective film memory. Among his thirteen films, this research focuses on the scenic design in A Clockwork Orange / Orange mécanique ( 1971 ) which caused as much debate as the movie itself. Thank to a multidisciplinary approach: cinematography, aesthetics, semiology, sociology, and history of art, this research shows the significance and artistic value of the film sets which are linked to its iconic and plastic aspects and to its relationship with sound. The main objective is to clarify the "meaning" of the film sets and the way they are conceived within the movie. The study of the Kubrick’s film sets allows us to know his artistic tastes, his sources, classical and contemporary, of architecture, design and Arts. Furthermore, this research gives evidence of his perfectionist character, thanks to which he is considered as one of the greatest visionary filmmakers of cinema’s history

The edition of Aeschylus plays edited by Thomas Stanley, and the notes he collected for a second one, are the subject of this thesis. The analysis considers the work of Thomas Stanley from different points of view: ch. Land 2 present a summary on the historical events of English Revolution, the contemporary cultural upheavals, and the biography of Thomas ' Stanley. The traits of Stanley's edition and sources are considered in ch, 3 and 4. Ch. 4 describe the different volumes, from which Thomas Stanley copied and exploited the marginal notes of XVI and XVII century scholars (Jean Dorat, Franciscus Portus, Il Scaliger, Isaac Casaubon, Henry Jacob, John Pearson) in his large philological commentary (aIllisted in ch. Il). Furthermore, Thomas Stanley's edition, well-known and widely used tiIl the end of XVm century, has given a great contribution to the diffusion of these scholars' conjectures, much before these annotated volumes were discovered and explored indipendently. Ch. 5 considers how Stanley worked on a portion of Aeschylus' Agamemmon (vv. 1-680), considering the tranlsatioIl, the commentary, the correction practice, and the metrical knowledge. AlI these aspects are deepened in ch. 6,7,8,9. Stanley's edition does n9tjust give attention to the philological issues raised by the text, but shows itself as an "aeschylean encyclopaedia", giving readers a great amount of information on different subject (archaeology, chronology, geography, etc. . . ), in order to let a wider and more complete comprehension of the text. This encyclopaedic 'character matches with the requirements put forward by Francis Bacon and his followers in the first half of the XVIIe century

Thompson, Andrew William. « Stanley Kubrick and the American Myth ». Thesis, Boston College, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/1962.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Thesis advisor: John Michalczyk
Stanley Kubrick explored and subverted the concept of American Myth throughout his filmography. American Myth may include the notion of social mobility (the American Dream), the archetypal gunslinger of the American West, the righteousness of a democratic system, a belief in social egalitarianism, and explicit foreign policies such as the Monroe Doctrine and the idea of Manifest Destiny. Kubrick’s Paths of Glory is an indictment of modern war and the commoditization of human lives. Dr. Strangelove demonstrates a uniquely American obsession with technology, proving innovation is not always progress. Finally, with Full Metal Jacket, Kubrick shows Vietnam has supplanted the West as America’s frontier, complete with gunplay between cowboys and native inhabitants

Résumé :
This dissertation is a critique of the general theory that Stanley Fish presents in his two books, Is There A Text In This Class: The Authority Of Interpretive Communities, and Doing What Comes Naturally: Change, Rhetoric and the Practice of Theory in Literary and Legal Studies. The importance of the theories presented in these two books is of wider-ranging importance than just the literary and legal academy, which is, at first glance, what Stanley Fish appears to be writing about. Stanley Fish uses these fields as a starting point to discuss interpretation of the text. However, he claims that his arguments have a wider relevance, and can explain the nature of all interpretations of the world around us. Both the legal and literary academies make claims about the nature of interpretation of texts. The history of both fields is full of discussion over what should be regarded as the best method of interpretation of any particular text, with various reading strategies being proposed as being the most objective. Fish’s point of view, however, is that no interpretation can be truly objective, although he also claims that this point of view does not commit him to a position where all interpretation is subjective. He refuses the traditional dichotomy between these two terms. The key to this apparent paradox is in the use of his concept interpretive communities. Stanley Fish proposes interpretive communities as a coherent social system of meaning which explains how interpretation, whilst not being objective in the pure sense of the term, is nevertheless not subjective. Fish’s explanation of interpretive communities has been subject to a great deal of criticism, and this dissertation will first summarize both Fish’s view, and that of some of his critics, then will discuss whether Fish’s arguments prove what he says they prove, or whether his critic’s objections prevail.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In the past few years, the claim that meaning is normative has grown increasingly suspect and many powerful arguments have been developed against its interpretation in terms of (1) conditions of correct use, (2) prescriptions and (3) rule-following. In the first essay of my thesis, I discuss the precise arguments that have been invoked by Paul Boghossian and by Kathrin Glüer and Asa Wikforss against the latter interpretation. In the second essay, I turn towards the two other interpretations of the normativity of meaning, as they are discussed by Anandi Hattiangadi and by Daniel Whiting. My main strategy in both of these essays is to show that the possibility of following a rule, like the existence of conditions of correct use, depends on our ability — and our willingness — to adopt a normative stance. That is to say, I defend the normativity of meaning by showing (i) that we (as human beings) are not indifferent as to how things are done or how words are used and (ii) that the notions of “rule-following” and of “conditions of correct use” are ways to express that fact. In the first essay, I attempt to clarify what I mean by adopting a normative stance — and following a rule — by linking them with the notions of understanding and of intelligent behaviour. In the second essay, I rather insist that conditions of correct use can be explained in terms of appropriateness or of fittingness with the circumstances. As such, I put myself in a position to criticize the traditional unfolding of that notion and to further articulate my idea of a normative stance.

Edwards, Guy J. « Structures of stance in interaction ». Connect to thesis, 2009. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/6671.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Stance and stance-taking are fundamental to the achievement of social interaction. Through stance and stance-taking, speakers position themselves relative to objects, and to other speakers. Stance is conceptualized as a social action whereby both positioning of the self and evaluation of an object are achieved through language in social interaction. The central contention is that stances are complex and interrelated social relationships established by speakers in conversation; stance(s) are established not only relative to stance, subject and object, but also to other stances, other objects, other subjects, and context. This relativity of stance acts to the multiplex vectors of other stance(s) is the basis for the proposal of the stance matrix as a framework for conceptualizing stance in conversation. Through micro-qualitative analysis of conversational data, speakers are shown to orient to the stance matrix in the everyday achievement of complex structures and sequences of stance acts. In addition, the communicative means by which stance is achieved in conversation is examined, and the heterodox nature of stance-taking expressions is shown to be critically dependent on an expanded and flexible model of indexicality, relating linguistically enabled stancetaking acts to the stance acts that are thereby achieved. The role of subjects in the stance matrix is considered in terms of achieving stance acts towards people. Subjects are shown to be deployed as objects through the intervention of membership categorization to foreground the social roles and/or categories in which people can be categorized. In conclusion, the stance matrix is proposed as a critical framework for conceptualizing and examining how speakers can be seen to orient to, in conversation, the multiple vectors of stance connecting subjects, objects and other stances.

Tersteeg, Margaretha Cornelia Antonia. « Locomotion and stance at height ». Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.555606.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Postural threat induced by height affects the control of movement. The aim of this thesis was to develop a better understanding of the extent and the mechanisms through which postural threat can affect movement. The first study showed that a postural threat induced with a height of 80 cm (walkway width 22 cm) did not affect the gait pattern or arousal levels of young healthy adults. Whereas a height of 3.5 m did, an increase in arousal and a more cautious gait pattern compared to walking at ground level were observed. The influence of visual information was tested by occluding visual information of the drop when walking on a 3.5 m high walkway while retaining the danger. Occluding the visual information lead to reduced arousal but still a cautious gait pattern was observed which did not differ from walking at this height with the presence of visual information of the drop. So visually driven balance mechanisms were not the dominant cause of the gait adaptations observed at height (3.5 m). In a third study the walking task was repeated several times. While walking at a walkway raised 3.85 m off the ground a tendency to reduce the lateral centre of mass (COM) movement was observed. It was proposed that a minimizing lateral COM movement was prioritized. The thesis continued with two studies exploring the effect of cognitive factors on adaptations seen in conditions of postural threat. A one-leg stance task was performed repeatedly on various locations. Risk of the task, quantified by a simple model based on the constraint in recovery possibilities, could not explain the adaptations (increased co-contraction index, flexion of the stance leg and increased heart rate) to the one-leg stance task completely. A priori expectations of the task were shown to influence the one-leg stance task: anticipation and familiarization were observed in two separate studies. Furthermore, exposure (position further along the walkway) did influence the execution of the one-leg stance task. The final study of this thesis investigated the response to galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) during standing. GVS elicits a lateral body sway. The maximum lateral displacement of the body was significantly reduced while standing on a 3.85 m high walkway compared to standing on the ground. However the initial vestibular reflexes were unaffected. The results suggest that feed forward control did not influence the vestibular reflexes under postural threat.

Hoult, Cathy. « The dual legacy of Elizabeth Cady Stanton ». Thesis, University of Leicester, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31070.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of Elizabeth Cady Stanton on her peers and subsequent generations involved in the fight for equality for women. Stanton's historical legacy has been obscured by her demand for the vote at the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and as a result, scholars have failed to engage in a detailed discussion of her significance. This project argues that Stanton's importance was twofold in nature, suggesting that the creation of the American women's rights movement and the development of an ideological vision for the equality of women, are in fact two distinct aspects of Stanton's legacy. As Stanton's philosophy directed the first generation of women to seek a broad range of goals for equality, including the right to vote, the inherent separation that existed between the women's rights movement and Stanton's ideas was initially concealed. However, the eventual rejection by the woman suffrage movement of Stanton's broad ideological platform in favour of the single issue of suffrage, illustrates the duality of her legacy. It is only by recognising and then by examining the two distinct areas of her legacy, her wide-ranging ideas for change, and the resulting women's rights movement, that Stanton's influence can be analysed and appreciated. Stanton's impact is highlighted through a series of case studies of selected individuals who can be connected to Stanton. The early character studies provide the opportunity to delve into the formation of Stanton's ideas and to briefly discuss the development of the women's rights movement. The later studies will expand on this base by tracing the process of transfer and evolution of Stanton's ideology, discussing the interaction between the organisation that she had established and her agenda for equality.

Résumé :
The main task of the diploma thesis is an analysis of financial performance and position of Morgan Stanley during several successive periods before and during the subprime financial crisis. Through the analysis of trends in key items, it also demonstrates strong cyclicality of financial performance and position of the investment bank. The first chapter deals with history and key divisions of the Company. The following chapter generally discusses selected phenomena, which, as per the author's view, significantly influenced industry-wide record-breaking performance during the period before the subprime crisis, and which substantially determined Morgan Stanley's risk profile and performance's corrections later during the Crisis. The core part of the Thesis is conceived as an analysis of financial performance and position of Morgan Stanley during the selected periods. The analysis of pre-crisis period until 2006 in the third chapter demonstrates growth of activities lying behind the unprecedented profitability of the Institution. The following fourth chapter analyzes deteriorating financial performance during the subprime crisis and indicates crucial strategy changes, implemented by the Company at the end of 2008. Effects of the strategic changes and challenges of the future development of the Institution are discussed in the last chapter. Additionally, the Thesis includes annexes, which further deal with selected topics and their general relations to investments banks and two annexes which compare Morgan Stanley with its nearest peers during specific periods.

Résumé :
This dissertation demonstrates performance as a mode of knowledge transfer, cultural continuity and intercultural influence that connects people – Indigenous as well as settlers and newcomers – to land. In it I engage with performance studies theory in light of Indigenous conceptions of land, performance and place naming held within the hən'q'əmin'əm' language, while using case studies to explicate histories based on archives and repertoires. Two of my dissertation case studies critically engage with the City of Vancouver Archives. The first deconstructs the use of reenactment to create an origin narrative of benevolent “whiteness” in settler society and the second examines possible Indigenous interventions in the archive through cultural restriction. A third study demonstrates how Aboriginal Tourism of BC’s Klahowya Village, located in Stanley Park 2010-14, presents an enterprise which asserts a connection to land while enabling some intra-nation Indigenous transfer of knowledge. In aiming to rectify the absence of Indigenous women in the archival work that I have undertaken, this dissertation also features performance responses to contemporary theatrical works written and/or performed by Indigenous women in Vancouver between 2012 and 2014. Research methodologies include semiotic and phenomenological analyses enabled by an engagement with Indigenous research methodologies supported by language learning, interviews, as well as archival and field work. This research puts forth a careful examination of the influence of Vancouver’s first archivist, James Skitt Matthews, making note of limitations of the city’s archival collection with regard to Indigenous knowledge and activities. Through analyses of the performative knowledge contained within hən'q'əmin'əm' and colonial place names this research proposes further critical consideration of existing Vancouver place names. I also develop two terms, grounded practices and eddies of influence, which are employed to create a fuller understanding of the significance of land, language and reciprocity, as well as the strategic and tactical methods through which the Indigenous peoples of this area have used performance to contribute to cultural continuation and the maintenance of Indigenous places.

Résumé :
This thesis assesses the impact of a Cistercian monastery on the landscape and how, in its turn, the landscape influenced the monastery. It also tests some of the traditional early ideals of the Cistercians such as their attitude to colonisation, land clearance, administration of their territory and dealings with secular society. This study also goes beyond the monastic period and examines what effect the suppression of the monastery had on the landscape and community. The research of monasteries has tended to be insular and concentrate on the recording of their standing fabric or the excavation of the church and conventual buildings; however, this thesis approaches the subject from a different perspective and examines not only the abbey but its territory using archaeology, architecture, documents and map evidence in a holistic, ‘landscape’ manner. In order to understand why the monks chose Chippenham Forest for their monastery the geomorphology of the region and the pre-monastic landscape is first assessed since it probably affected later colonisation. Using the earthwork survey plan of the abbey features within the precinct are identified. It is clear that, following its suppression, the west range of the abbey was converted into a mansion house with gardens and parkland beyond, which are revealed on the plan. Similarly, archaeological evidence would suggest that similar conversions were undertaken at some granges. The abbey’s granges were located in diverse locations; some were in isolated positions while others were on the edge of existing settlements. It is also clear that the monks held manors at an early date, but within some of these manors there were also granges, thus the monks held a compact blocks of land in severalty, but also owned the demesne with tenants owing dues to the abbot.

Bartimote, Aufflick Kathryn Mary. « The relation between academics' epistemic stances and culture ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20634.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this thesis the relationships between epistemic stance and culture are examined. Epistemic stance is the personal theory one holds in relation to knowledge and knowing, and represents an integrated system of beliefs in relation to several important issues in epistemology. Stance was studied as an unordered categorical variable, assuming all stances hold equal merit. The framing of the study and the methodology were informed by critical realist ideas. This added to the richness of this quantitative exploration of potentially formative cultural communities and experiences for academics. The relationship between the epistemic stances of academics and a range of sociocultural factors was explored via a person-centred analysis approach, using data collected via a survey developed for the study. Complete responses were received from 462 academic staff members and PhD students from four large research-intensive Australian universities across eight disciplines. The results indicate that the family, religious groups, disciplinary communities, organizational structures (e.g. university departments and institutions), and university courses are all potentially formative environments for academics’ epistemic stances. Further, some experiences of remaining or moving between cultural communities seem important, as do experiences of continuity within one cultural community versus experiences of multiplicity. Discipline had the closest linkage with epistemic stance, followed by family and religion. An academic’s current discipline was shown to be important, but also previous disciplines they had taught or researched in, as well as their undergraduate major area. Only three out of the eight disciplines studied here were dominated by one particular stance. The limitations and affordances of taking a critical realist stance in this thesis are discussed, along with an elaboration on the key findings. In particular, it is noted that when considering groupings of academics we need to go beyond disciplinary boundaries. It is proposed that epistemic stances themselves provide potentially useful groupings, and could be seen as untapped and disconnected cultural communities.

Résumé :
Computational approaches to opinion mining have mostly focused on polarity detection of product reviews by classifying the given text as positive, negative or neutral. While, there is less effort in the direction of socio-political opinion mining to determine favorability towards given targets of interest, particularly for social media data like news comments and tweets. In this research, we explore the task of automatically determining from the text whether the author of the text is in favor of, against, or neutral towards a proposition or target. The target may be a person, an organization, a government policy, a movement, a product, etc. Moreover, we are interested in detecting the reasons behind authors’ positions. This thesis is organized into three main parts: the first part on Twitter stance detection and interaction of stance and sentiment labels, the second part on detecting stance and the reasons behind it in online news comments, and the third part on multi-target stance classification. One may express favor (or disfavor) towards a target by using positive or negative language. Here, for the first time, we present a dataset of tweets annotated for whether the tweeter is in favor of or against pre-chosen targets, as well as for sentiment. These targets may or may not be referred to in the tweets, and they may or may not be the target of opinion in the tweets. We develop a simple stance detection system that outperforms all 19 teams that participated in a recent shared task competition on the same dataset (SemEval-2016 Task #6). Additionally, access to both stance and sentiment annotations allows us to conduct several experiments to tease out their interactions. Next, we proposed a novel framework for joint learning of stance and reasons behind it. This framework relies on topic modeling. Unlike other machine learning approaches for argument tagging which often require a large set of labeled data, our approach is minimally supervised. The extracted arguments are subsequently employed for stance classification. Furthermore, we create and make available the first dataset of online news comments manually annotated for stance and arguments. Experiments on this dataset demonstrate the benefits of using topic modeling, particularly Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, for argument detection. Previous models for stance classification often treat each target independently, ignoring the potential (sometimes very strong) dependency that could exist among targets. However, in many applications, there exist natural dependencies among targets. In this research, we relieve such independence assumptions in order to jointly model the stance expressed towards multiple targets. We present a new dataset that we built for this task and make it publicly available. Next, we show that an attention-based encoder-decoder framework is very effective for this problem, outperforming several alternatives that jointly learn dependent subjectivity through cascading classification or multi-task learning.

Rantsudu, Boitshwarelo. « Stance and objectivity in hard news reporting ». Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/119443/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study examines the appearance of evaluative language and strategic adherence to the principle of objectivity in hard news reporting. While these concepts have traditionally been treated as distinct from each other, they are related. The study highlights a key relational tension between taking an evaluative stance and adhering to the requirement for objectivity. This relational tension is pointed out by Richardson (2007:87), who argues that news reporting is a value-laden process, and that journalists make language choices to express those values while remaining 'journalistically objective'. This demonstrates a two-sided tension that journalists strategically handle in news reporting. In this thesis, I examine this important aspect of the characteristics of hard news reporting, that is, how evaluative language and objectivity concurrently appear in the news. This is dealt with by considering 16 hard news articles from the Daily News and Mmegi. The news articles cover the 2011 nationwide public sector workers' strike in Botswana. In this study a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches is used to compare how the two newspapers use evaluative language, and how they mitigate such evaluative language in order to remain objective. Four research questions are addressed in this study: 1. How frequent and varied is the use of evaluative language in the Daily News and Mmegi? 2. Given the legal requirement for press objectivity in Botswana, what strategies are used by the Daily News and Mmegi to mitigate such evaluative language? 3. Are there significant differences in the strategies employed by the two newspapers to use and mitigate evaluative language? 4. Can any differences in the strategies of evaluation and mitigation be related to the newspapers' political positioning or the nature of the event covered? Evidence from analysing comparable news articles indicates that, when studied within the context of hard news reporting, evaluation and objectivity are not mutually exclusive concepts, but that the variety of linguistic resources employed in news articles affords journalists success in expressing evaluative content while maintaining the objectivity ideal.
