Résumé :
The main objective of this master&rsquo
s thesis is to analyze the place assigned to human subjectivity by French philosophers Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze. In order to fulfil the requirements of this objective, what is focused on is their shared critique which is exercised against the traditional conceptions of humanity and subjectivity. Through the thesis, first Foucault&rsquo
s analyses which demonstrate that universal man as a construction emerges as an effect of discursive practices and power relations, and his archaeological method that illustrates knowledge process is not dependent on transcendental consciousness are explained and discussed. Then it is argued that Deleuzian philosophy of becoming which does not submit to any transcendent unity that governs experience is an actual alternative to subject-centered understandings of the world. Throughout the course of arguments it is emphasized that according to both Foucault and Deleuze the human subject is an effect of network type relations that occur in a non-subjective fashion.

Originally published in 1975, Lavoura Arcaica (Ancient Tillage), written by Raduan Nassar is considered one of the main Brazilian literary productions of the 20th century, being also responsible for many of the author’s awards. The romance follows, in first person, the story of André, middle son of a peasant family, who runs from home to get away to the submissions of the patriarch and to cope with the rejection of the sister after the incestuous act, but returns after the supplications of Pedro, the oldest brother. By the authoritative nexus of the father, always reinforcing the ideas of union and patience, situations of continuous discomfort have to be put up by the protagonist. In order to decipher these relations, the existentialist phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty is used as the theoretical basis. In this approach of Humanist and Cultural Geography, it was possible to identify the diverse tensions that manifests and builds up the place. In the passages which the everyday of the tillage is unraveled, the way the home and the power influx is composed, it was possible to evidence the obtuse and complex feelings that are contraposed in ways that architects a place that is founded on contradictions. André offers a perspective of place that is not a space of bonding, but of attachments. Mainly in the book are the linkages of ancestry, blood, passion, hate, strength, religiousness, survival, bonding, nature, corporeality, imposition, and others; each with its relational possibilities. It is by the way of those attachments that the characters are going to interact at and with the place-Tillage. By the means of the concepts of place-ballet, temporality and home, the notions of the ways by with place and subject are inserted in a profound and tense dialect was reconstructed. In the contrapositions made aware by the limit situations of the novel, it was possible to explore the spatialities of being-in-the-world and comprehend the existential dynamics at the nature of place.

The research shows, first, the limits of the use of the speech place and, later, how this use and these limits affect the political action of the left, of the social movements of the left. The character of the work is theoretical, making an extensive bibliographical review and based on Critical Theory. In the first chapter we make a historical, political and theoretical point about the subject who speaks, the political action of a subject in the many visions within the left thinking. Chapter two deals with the limit of the current sense used to the speech place, namely: a liberal emphasis of politics on individuals, these are considered as an ideological category, the speech place as an individualism obliquely. Finally, it was concluded that the contemporary identity politics, represented by the use of the speech place, shifted the axis of action from the left of the collective to the individual.

All literary works are given a particular form – space – by the movement of their author’s mind. The unified or divided form built by the novelistic body of work bears witness to the intentions and intuitions of the author. By seeking to identify the limits of the celinian novelistic space, we aim at understanding what motivates the act of writing and, through a reading of the novels of Louis-Ferdinand Céline, try to conceptualize what could come to be used as a tool of critical analysis: the “novelistic space”

Abstract: The emergence of the "second wave of feminism" in Brazil and Argentina in the beginning of the 70s, as part of the Latin American economic outlook, implied in the formation of the political subject feminist women related to the formation of a collective enunciation place of women and for women in discourse and in history. From the theoretical-methodological materialist Discourse Analysis, a comparative analysis of the constitution of the feminist discourse in both countries are useful to observe similarities and singularities of these discursive processes and the force relation with other discourses circulating in society at that time. Therefore the discursive corpus of the research is constituted by enunciations of written feminist texts (newspapers, pamphlets, meeting decisions and open letters) circulating in Brazil and Argentina in the 70s, standing out is the newspaper Nós Mulheres (1976-1978) and the magazine Persona (1974-1976). The description of discursive processes which imaginably represent social places and positions which behave as a space of identification, where women constitute/signify as feminists and as so, as a new political subject by active support in political e social struggles, undertaken by the movement, produces elements so that one can apprehend the constitution of this enunciation place. Questioning the border between public and private in the feminist discourse, expressed by the watchword "The private is political!" establishes the enunciation place of the political subject feminist women. Feminist movement and discourse were (and are) heterogeneous and produce different meanings in certain production conditions. Regularity of certain imaginary projections in the feminist discourse in Brazil and Argentina sustain the existence of a feminist discursive formation that works like a "self-dictionary" and a "source for meaning" of the feminine discourse where we find several subject positions

Résumé :
The theme of this investigation explores rememoration/commemoration and urban imaginary . This study is grounded on the theoretical domains of History and Anthropology and the dislocation of the notion of commemoration to the discourse analysis operation. Therefore, the two notions are defined separately. The rememoration, on the one hand, as a discourse of, which operates as inter-discourse and the operation of the pre-constructed, le gitimates and supports the commemoration. On the other hand, the commemoration as a discourse about is related to the present time. The rememoration/commemoration together constitute the intra-discourse the line of the subject s discourse as an effect of the interdiscourse about itself. The rememoration vertical axle has two operations: as memory and as founding text. We divided the discursive corpus based on memory place, notion developed by Nora (1984) and which in the discursive order is constituted, according to Courtine (2006), as a file system, a net of formulations from which return statements that update the speeches and knowledge of a discursive formation. The rememoration/commemoration is a place of memory of this discourse and is structured in four instances, represented by the urban institutions: the Érico Verissimo Foundation, which organizes the discursive memory and, determines what has to be observed and what has to be erased; the UNICRUZ (Foundation of Cruz Alta University); the municipal government, and the media. The urban imaginary refers to Cruz Alta, city located in the inland of Rio Grande do Sul state, which is represented in the inner and outer boundaries as Érico Verissimo s land . The writer is the object of rememoration/commemoration and constitutes himself as the object to (cause of willingness) and the object of willingness (the object of this willingness) and he materializes himself in the line of the discourse by the willingness subject perspective. Two questions support our reflection: the first one is How the object of rememoration/commemoration is constituted in urban space? And the second one: which memory s domains operate in this discourse? Our aim is to know how the discourse of rememoration/commemoration as discursive practice of an urban imaginary constitution is represented and institutionalized. The corpus of this file comprehends the period from 1969 to 2006. There from we set apart texts samples of discourse from the instances of delimitated place of memory. We analyzed a complex corpus, which is constituted of varied discursive materialities: documentaries (two), billboards, signs and advertisement, which are materialized in the line of discourse by verbal and non-verbal statements. The analyses show, briefly, the effort of the urban institutions of Cruz Alta in providing visibility to object of rememoration/commemoration: Érico Verissimo.
Delimitamos quatro lugares: O museu, a Unicruz, o Poder Público Municipal e a Mídia.

The hypothesis for this essay is: ”Teachers use assessment methods that are mainly summative and as a consequence student involvement in the assessment process is low, with too little focus on the goals of the education.” The primary aim is to investigate whether or not this hypothesis is true. To answer this, students were asked their opinions about assessment. Also, teachers were asked questions about assessment, to see if there is a correlation between students' and teachers' thoughts. The investigation was conducted through a questionnaire, which 46 students and three teachers answered. The students came from three different ninth grade classes.

The results from the questionnaires indicate that mainly summative assessment methods are used since, for example, only 50% of the students know how they are being assessed. Also, when giving examples of assignments they get to do in class, most students gave answers that traditionally are connected with summative assessment. The results also show that student involvement in the assessment process is low, as 65% answered that they rarely or never get to self-assess, and they are only involved in planning subject areas sometimes. Also, a majority of 74% would like to have more personal conversations with their teacher about their development. However, most students feel that their teacher is clear about the goals and objectives of assignments.

The conclusion reached in this essay is that the hypothesis was partly true. The teachers in this study use mainly summative assessment methods, and student involvement in the assessment process is low. On the other hand, teachers are good at explaining the educational goals. In a majority of the questions, students' and teachers' opinions about assessment coincide. However, the opinions differ greatly between the classes in all but two questions.

This essay examines how the love relationship is made in Märta Tikkanens Århundradets kärlekssaga and Ebba Witt-Brattströms Århundradets kärlekskrig. The aim for this study is to analyze how place, and the consumption of “the other” interact in the writing of a love relationship. I explore how a narcissistic, collapsed subject functions and how it is made in the poems. I discuss how and if experience-based writing maintains a capitalistic and narcissistic lovesystem where the subject commits violence on itself and others by determining an abstract and physical place. The book Eros Agoni by Byung-Chul Han discusses the atopic otherness in the love relationship and how the liberalistic and consuming subject exploit the other and itself. I analyze this theory of the other and how the love relationships function in the poems. I also discuss how the others lack of space and how the consuming gaze is made in the writing. In the fixing of place there is an aspect of power where a consuming gaze exploits the other by doing, and writing it.    In parallel with the analysis, I also problematize myself and my own writing and the fears that exist in a collapsed, narcissistic, writing subject. I show how the writer violates text and analysis, and how the determination of place is an illusion of liberation in the capitalist system. I show how failed writing can become a way out of a capitalist society where the subject strives for perfection.

Martel, Keith. « The Narrative Subject and Place ». 2011. http://digital.library.duq.edu/u?/etd,154082.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This dissertation investigates the ways in which the human encounter with place has an active role in shaping personal identity. I commence the study with an examination of the appearing of place in the life of the subject. This begins with a consideration of intentionality through the philosophies of Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty. I then identify several characteristics of place including: place as unselfconsciously intended and tacitly known, place's bleeding boundaries, the intimate connection between the self and environment, and place's affectivity on the emplaced subject. Edward Casey, E.C. Relph, and J.E. Malpas are key influences in the development of these characteristics. <br>The dissertation continues to employ the narrative identity theory of Paul Ricoeur as he develops a sense of self-identity that is founded neither in the subject as posited in the Cartesian cogito, nor in Nietzsche's deconstruction of the subject. While Ricoeur's narrative identity is a helpful means of understanding the concept of personal identity, nevertheless, I argue that Ricoeur's framework manifests a significant oversight. In his attention to time and action, he misses the vital role of environment in the development of one's narrative. I reconsider Ricoeur's work giving attention to the way that the appearing of place in experience is effectual in shaping the self's story and thus the formation of identity. <br>I then turn to explore the question regarding why place is overlooked in everyday experience, in the work of Ricoeur, and throughout much of the history of philosophy. In the consideration of the veil of place, I utilize the inconspicuity of the ready-to-hand tool in Heidegger's Being and Time. However, I argue that to remain hidden is not necessarily the fate of place. I endeavor to exhibit the ways in which place is (and can be) self-consciously experienced. Finally, to demonstrate the ways in which place is a significant aspect of identity formation, I turn to the fictional works of author Wendell Berry and the later philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Through Berry and Heidegger I explore the themes the self's relationship with place, the effects of displacement, and the role of place-based memory.

Le, Audrey. « A New Place to Work and Play : Play Labor and the Production of the New Worker-Subject at Hackathons ». Thesis, 2017. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8348XXN.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Since 2012, hundreds of companies have poured thousands of dollars into hackathons – finite events where creatives come together in small teams to design, build, and demo a new product of feature. The spectacle of the hackathon engages participants in a number of things: a transgressive ethos, disciplined play, and hacker’s literacies (Santo 2011). Based on my dissertation fieldwork at seven hackathons in three industries (journalism, healthcare, and e-government), I explore various types of play labor (Terranova 2000) based on the performances of eight teams. I show how teams creatively manage their peers’ affective and intellectual labor, and negotiate what appear to be industry-specific preferences for different technologies. In the process of competing for status and recognition, they engender distinct forms of play labor and making do. Hackathon participants directly embed resistance in their designs; some learn how to learn (Bateson 1972), giving them a strategic advantage over other classes of workers. They embody the characteristics of the new worker-subject required in the digital economy, as mutable, playful, and rapid.

Botsis, Hannah. « Subject positioning in the South African symbolic economy : student narratives of their languages and lives in a changing place ». Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/20754.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of the Witwatersrand December 2015
Language use is irreducibly social and historical, bearing the complexities of difference, location, and power. These dynamics are particularly visible in “post”-apartheid South Africa, where historical and contemporary asymmetries of race and class are refracted through language politics, practices and experiences. “Youth embody the sharpening contradictions of the contemporary world in especially acute form” (Comaroff & Comaroff, 2005, p. 21) because they are often at the coalface of societal change. At this particular historical moment the paradoxes and challenges of South African students are acutely visible when examining the role of language in reproducing a bifurcated education system, and indeed society. Methodologically, I examined 15 student narratives about their experiences of language in everyday life. The narratives were generated using a multi-modal approach to language biographies, where participants’ linguistic repertoires are visually represented in different colours on a pre-given body outline (Busch et al., 2006). The inclusion of the visual component provided participants with a nuanced vocabulary for constructing their narrative accounts. This narrative data was then thematically analysed with a focus on participants’ subject positioning. Firstly, it was found that the notion of an authentic identity functioned as an ideological claim. The participants referred to a desire for authentic cultural roots, through reference to what they considered “pure” African languages. They articulated a sense that an authentic cultural identity might be lost by virtue the ubiquitous nature of English in their lives. Participants positioned themselves and others as either belonging or not belonging, depending how “authentic” a member of an identity category one was assessed to be. The narratives demonstrated that the nuances of language and voice become the site for the nano-politics of identity and authenticity (Blommaert & Varis, 2015), especially when cultural and racial identity categories appear to be in crisis. Secondly, English was constructed as a variable symbolic asset across different fields. Representations of English and African languages were positioned in line with existing colonial and racial tropes where English was represented as the language of the mind and rationality, while African languages, even when positively described, were construed as languages of the body or emotion. For black participants, while it was appropriate and desirable to speak English at university, in other fields, such as the home, English could be negatively sanctioned. It is the relation of power between fields in the symbolic economy that influences the reception of a linguistic asset. I argue that English was negatively sanctioned (while still being desirable) as a way of containing the power of English qua whiteness. The link between desirability and derision that English represents makes claims to authenticity, as well as accusations of betrayal, pivotal in the subject positioning of participants in relation to their experiences of language across different fields. These student narratives about experiences of language capture a particular historical moment and demonstrate how the youth straddle the contradictions of the past and the future. However, while these narratives are historically specific they also point to the universal process of becoming a subject through language.

Shaw, Jennifer. « Transnationally adopted children's perspectives on place and identity ». Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2892.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis focuses on the ideas and experiences of transnationally adopted children regarding place and identity, and how their perspectives compare to those of their parents’. Although anthropologists have long been interested in child circulation, the growing transnational nature of adoption has sparked new interest in kinship studies. However, anthropological literature on transnational adoption largely focuses on the perspectives of adults including adoptive parents, adoption professionals, and adopted adults, while children’s opinions are rarely elicited. I interviewed ten transnationally adopted children using semi-structured interviews and drawing exercises to explore how they come to know about their migration and birth places as well as what places they find important sources of their identification. I also interviewed 14 parents of transnationally adopted children to examine how they emplace their children, physically and socially, upon adoption. Parents understand birth places to be a significant source of their children’s identities and construct ideas of this place that are meant to foster children’s ethnic and cultural connections to their birth places. However, children do not always conceptualize place or themselves in the same way as their parents. Rather than articulating abstract ethnic identities based on birth places, children draw on particular locations, people, and events that are important in their daily lives. By solely drawing attention to dichotomous dual ethnicities, or dual places of belonging, multiple other places that play an important part in children’s lives may be neglected. Through child-focused research, children can be viewed as competent social actors who are subject to their parents’ practices and desires but they also hold divergent perspectives on place and identity that shape their lives and influence those around them.

In recent years, “aging population” and “low fertility” have become the issue of concern in Taiwan. This research discusses the two social phenomena of caring and nursing for elderly people, with special focus on Taiwan’s non-metropolitan areas where only elderly people remain because most of their next generations have moved to metropolitan areas to pursue opportunities of education or career. On the other hand, as time goes by, many parents no longer consider living with their own children to be the best choice while growing old. Hence the elderly people who choose to live in their original place till the end of the life will become the trend in the future. This research starts from the concept of “aging in place” and the field study was conducted on Tai-tung Sugar Factory Kuang-ming Community. In addition, based on the special background of “work/live community”, this study investigates the implementing factors of “aging in place” by living environment, daily activities and living patterns of elderly people in Kuang-ming Community. The results of this study shows three key points:1. The physical environmental setting is helpful to establish a precious informal support network and the social environment which is tightly linked with local sentiments. 2. Developing local resources in “multi-function”, “sharing” and “fine-tuning” ways are beneficial to complete the requirements for aged life. 3. To strengthen the functions of community could reduce the disparity between expectations and executions of “aging in place” of the elderly people. Furthermore, the making of social policies should think about the influences of social values. They not only create the “common interests”, but also concern about the “universal welfare”. From the point of view of community planning, the meaning of “aging in place” goes along with another issue-how to establish a community having enough tolerance in any period of life cycle? This could achieve sustainable development of living environment and local resources.

Scannell, Leila. « Natural and civic place attachment and the relation to pro-environmental behaviours in Trail and Nelson, British Columbia ». Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/925.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The relation between place attachment and pro-environmental behaviour has not been thoroughly examined. Of the few studies to have investigated this, findings conflict (Uzzell, Pol, & Badenas, 2002; Vaske & Kobrin, 2001). Possibly, these inconsistencies relate to the definition of place attachment. The current study distinguished two dimensions of place attachment: social-symbolic (civic), and physical-natural. Data were collected from 104 community members in two proximate towns. Participants indicated their levels of natural and civic attachment, evaluated the current and future local environmental quality, and reported their pro-environmental behaviours. Greater place attachment was associated with more positive current evaluations in Trail. Surprisingly, environmental evaluations did not predict pro-environmental behaviour in either town. Both types of place attachment predicted pro-environmental behaviour in Nelson, but in Trail, only natural attachment was significant. Thus, for different cities, different types of place attachment will predict pro-environmental behaviour. Implications and directions for further research are discussed.

Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis was to research what factors determines the teachers choice in using outdoor educational activities in their mathematics teaching as well as when and where the outdoors mathematics teaching is being used. The research that lies behind the study shows that there is a knowledge gap in the research on outdoor mathematics, since most of the research conducted today is focusing on a more general use of outdoor pedagogical activities irrespective of which subject content it`s applied on. The relevance of the study therefore becomes an important source of knowledge for teachers and students in teaching education. The survey was conveyed by a questionnaire as a research method with the purpose of being able to examine how the use of outdoor mathematics occurs today, in correlation to factors such as professional experience, education or which grade the teacher mostly teaches. The result of the survey showed that many teachers today use outdoor educational activities in their mathematics teaching. The purpose of the use of outdoor mathematics was primarily to vary their teaching and to concretise the subject content. The result also shows that the forest was the place that is best suited for outdoor mathematics according to the teachers. The teachers, however, shed light on the lack of time when planning and implementing lessons, class sizes and human resources as obstacles for outdoor educational activities.

This study uses a case study to investigate the experiences of Nigerian market women as leaders. The conventional leadership literature has relied on the experiences of White women within formal educational and organizational settings, which emphasise hierarchy. formal organizational knowledge, ability to negotiate bureaucratic structures, etc. However, my observation of Nigerian market women led me to question this vision of leadership and attempt to widen it to include a more inclusive view of women's leadership. Semi-structured interviews provided the data for this inquiry. Results of the audio-taped interviews and the notes were analyzed for themes and patterns. Findings of this inquiry suggest that their leadership is collaborative, and in the context of community without which an individual is nothing. It is also influenced by gender, which shapes their relationship to household subsistence, apprenticeship, wealth that is acquired or passed down from their female relatives, and economic clout acquired through marketplace trading.

Dalton, Lindsay Paige. « Place of women : exploring the role of place in shaping self-employment as a livelihood strategy for women in the resource dependent community of Gold River, B.C ». Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2359.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In the academic literature resource dependent communities have been characterized as principally economic spaces that evolved relative to their socio-economic dependence on a single resource-based industry. Subsequently, as industry restructuring and closure has effected community transition, research emphasis has shifted to the emergence of alternative economic futures for these places. Currently, economic and social renewal in resource dependent communities is typified by sets of locally based strategies that rely on the participation of all community members. However, as recent research positions local actors as catalysts for socio-economic development, very little research has been dedicated to exploring the multiple roles and contributions women make to their households and broader community. By extension, the organization of women's economic lives, particularly in terms of self-employment, has been absent from the discourses surrounding community transition and resilience. In response, my research is rooted in place-based change as a means of highlighting how self-employed women have made use of place-based resources to structure their livelihood strategies. Using personal observation and semi-structured, open-ended interviews with 13 women in Gold River, BC, the purpose of my research was to demonstrate how self-employed women simultaneously shape and are shaped by place. In turn, I demonstrate that women pursue self-employment as a means of fulfilling their requirements for paid work, personal fulfillment, and the flexibility to maintain household and community responsibilities. In the process, self-employed women have made unique contributions to community well-being and to the evolution of place-based identity.

Résumé :
The concepts and issues surrounding the study of sacred places represent a complex interaction of mindscapes and landscapes. Using as the main examples Stonehenge and the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, this thesis is about these interactions in natural, community sacred places and serves two main purposes. The first is to clarify the meaning of -sacred- and the application of sacred designation to natural places. The second is to explore options for the protection. conservation and restoration of such places. In addition. an interpretation of cultural issues surrounding the understanding of the sacred in place explores and explains the connections between worldviews, stories or mythologies, and sense of place in sacred places so that a better understanding can be reached of the paradigms that underlie our conception of the sacred and of nature. and by extension, the sacred in nature. This in turn serves to illuminate the recommendation of focal restoration techniques to restore sacred places.

Von, Petzinger Genevieve. « Making the abstract concrete : the place of geometric signs in French upper paleolithic parietal art ». Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/1402.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In Paleolithic cave art, geometric signs tend to outnumber figurative images and yet, they remain relatively understudied. To address this gap in our knowledge, I compiled a digital catalogue of all known geometric signs found in parietal art in France, and then trended the results looking for patterns of continuity and change over time and space. I focused on parietal art, as I could be certain of its provenance, and picked France as my region due to its abundance of decorated sites and its natural boundaries of water and mountain ranges. The database is searchable by a variety of criteria such as sign category, method of production, date range, site type, geographical coordinates and region. It is now being converted into an online resource. To provide a visual dimension, it includes a selection of linked photographs and reproductions of the different signs. In this thesis, I detail the chronological and regional patterning in sign type and frequency and the implications of these patterns for understanding where, when and why the making of these signs was meaningful to the Pleistocene peoples who created them.

Résumé :
This is a geographical study of the experience of place for older adults in the rapidly growing area known as `Oceanside' on Vancouver Island. Oceanside's population is one of Canada's oldest: more than 40% are aged 55 and over. The goal of the research is to explore notions of home and community, place and space, and to consider the implications for planning future environments for an aging population. Qualitative analysis of 27 in-depth interviews suggests that the physical, social, cultural and structural environments are multi-layered. When considering a move to the area, it was physical environment that was most important. Once participants moved to the area, social and cultural environments became central in their lives. Finally, the structural environment, particularly the shortage of health services, may cause people to leave the area. Personal identity and past place experience influence participants' experience of the present and their hopes for the future.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Concord Pacific Place, a glass wall of tall, thin condominium towers lining the north shore of Vancouver's False Creek, is an urban mega-project being developed on the former Expo '86 lands sold to Hong Kong property magnate Li Ka-shing in 1988. This study examines the local, provincial. federal. and Hong Kong-based cultural, economic, social, and political conditions implicated in the production of Concord Pacific Place and how the mega-project's architecture and artworks refer to these conditions. This thesis argues that Concord Pacific espoused a high-tech self-image as a strategy to challenge the local perception of the mega-project as a Hong Kong-funded development for Hong Kong buyers. This study illustrates how the site's Supermodern architecture and some of its artworks overtly emphasize that the space is a high-tech community and also subtly allude to Chinese transnationality by using inconspicuous references intended to be detected only by Concord Pacific's Hong Kong consumers.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis broadly explores the complex relations between commodity circulation, modes of visuality, landscape experience, and hierarchies of place in the Yellowhead Pass and Robson Valley areas of east-central British Columbia during the period 1910-1975. By examining a wide array of sources, including some that are banal, fragmentary, and indirect, it shows that views of that space and the numerous rural communities located within it have been structured and mediated by modem networks and systems of transportation and communication, beginning with transcontinental railways and ending with transprovincial highways. It demonstrates that the shifting ways in which places in this corridor-region have been connected to and separated from these lines of circulation, and also the associated ways in which they have been seen (and not seen) by people travelling along them have played vitally important roles in both the routines and possibilities of residents' everyday lives, and their local, place-based identities.

Shaw, Pamela Jean. « Boxed in : the place of the public good in the retail landscape ». Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2867.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The retail landscape has changed significantly since the mid 20th century, evolving from a city centre focus through strip malls, shopping centres, shopping malls, mega-malls, big box stores, and to the newest form of retailing - the lifestyle commercial centres. One constant through this evolution has been the permissive role of land use regulations in shaping the form and location of retailing. At issue is whether local governments, and in particular land use planners, have abandoned a holistic approach to evaluating the public good and instead focused solely on the economic benefits gained from new development. This study offers a new approach to understanding the "boxed in" relationship between the retail landscape and the public good: that is, boxed in by the form of available retailing, by the paradoxical lack of choice brought on by an obsessive belief in "larger is better", and by permissive decision-making that focuses too strongly on the economic benefits of more and larger retail stores. A case study of the retail landscape of Nanaimo, British Columbia is included to illustrate a practical example of this relationship. Drawing on primary research on the impact of shopping locations on individuals combined with in-depth interviews and archival research, the retail landscape is examined. The intended outcome of this research is to challenge local governments, and in particular land use planners, to more fully consider the question of the public good when evaluating land use proposals.

Résumé :
This thesis documents and highlights - within the context of other exclusionary practices - some of the spatial and architectural strategies deployed by the government and the privileged classes to exclude and evict homeless citizens from the spaces of the city. Although various spatial scales are incorporated into the argument - from the national to the municipal - this investigation focuses primarily on the Capital Region of British Columbia and the City of Victoria, where much of the statistical and empirical research has been gleaned. Through the implementation of regressive legislation, oppressive urban planning, and exclusionary architectural design, the visible and abject homeless body is systematically concealed, wrongfully prohibited, or violently evicted from private and public space. Indeed, not only are homeless citizens denied a fundamental right to a private space of secure, adequate, and affordable housing, they are also denied fundamental political and physical rights to the public spaces of the city.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A sample of 96 rural adolescents recruited from four rural communities in the Kootenay Boundary region of British Columbia completed a cross-sectional survey tapping self concept, possible selves, sense of community, and the connections among these constructs. The consideration of both present and future selves were viewed through a contextual lens where rural characteristics were considered. There were mixed sentiments regarding living in the rural communities. Youth were typically able to find support and generally liking living in their communities although many indicated ambivalence about staying in their community after leaving high school. An important connection was found between a high estimation of capability for obtaining a future hoped-for self and a high rating of self-concept. This result suggests important implications for rural and possible selves research, and implications for rural youth including building self-esteem though fostering perceptions of capability, increasing community engagement, and strengthening community connections.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis presents the development, implementation and evaluation of a cross-cultural, experiential marine program that occurred in 2007 at a Senior High School in Sooke, British Columbia. The program consisted of a field-intensive, marine curriculum that acknowledged the contributions of Aboriginal science (Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Wisdom) as complementary to Western science, when understanding and monitoring the coastal environment. Students of both Aboriginal (N= 8) and non-Aboriginal (N= 11) heritage were surveyed before and after instruction of theirknowledge and beliefs about marine science and Aboriginal culture. Prior to instruction, students tended to have positive opinions about Aboriginal culture and marine science, although their knowledge in marine ecology and oceanography was not strong. However, students showed a good understanding of human impacts on the environment. An important finding was that after instruction all students, regardless of cultural heritage, gender or previous coursework, gained positively in all measures from the experience.
