Résumé :
ABSTRACT The Cucumber necrosis virus (CNV) particle is a T=3 icosahedron consisting of 180 identical coat protein (CP) subunits. Plants infected with wild-type CNV accumulate a high number of T=3 particles, but other particle forms have not been observed. Particle polymorphism in several T=3 icosahedral viruses has been observed in vitro following the removal of an extended N-terminal region of the CP subunit. In the case of CNV, we have recently described the structure of T=1 particles that accumulate in planta during infection by a CNV mutant (R1+2) in which a large portion of the N-terminal

This study investigates the two-way coupling effects of finite-size solid spherical particles on decaying isotropic turbulence using direct numerical simulation with an immersed boundary method. We fully resolve all the relevant scales of turbulence around freely moving particles of the Taylor length-scale size, 1.2≤d/λ≤2.6. The particle diameter and Stokes number in terms of Kolmogorov length- and time scales are 16≤d/η≤35 and 38≤τp/τk≤178, respectively, at the time the particles are released in the flow. The investigation of a Brownian particle subjected to an AC force that diffuses within a T-shaped chamber was conducted. This T-shaped chamber is composed of a strip cavity and a trapezoidal cavity positioned below it. The interplay between the AC force and asymmetric geometry creates a spatially bistable potential perpendicular to the AC force. With the assistance of noise, the particles can transition between two stable states and oscillate along the AC force at corresponding amplitudes at every spatially stable state. The asymmetric geometry facilitates the trapezoid cavity’s ability to mor

Abstract We introduce a modified Galton‒Watson process using the framework of an infinite system of particles labelled by (x,t), where x is the rank of the particle born at time t. The key assumption concerning the offspring numbers of different particles is that they are independent, but their distributions may depend on the particle label (x,t). For the associated system of coupled monotone Markov chains, we address the issue of pathwise duality elucidated by a remarkable graphical representation in which the trajectories of the primary Markov chains and their duals coalesce to form forest g

A convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to identify the morphology of rough particles from their interferometric images. The tested particles had the shapes of sticks, crosses, and dendrites as well as Y-like, L-like, and T-like shapes. A conversion of the interferometric images to polar coordinates enabled particle shape recognition despite the random orientations and random sizes of the particles. For the non-centrosymmetric particles (Y, L, and T), the CNN was not disturbed by the twin image problem, which would affect some classical reconstructions based on phase retrieval algorithms

Abstract Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an aggressive peripheral T-cell neoplasm that develops only after long-term chronic infection with human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1). HTLV-1-specific Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) play an important role in suppressing proliferation of HTLV-1-infected or transformed T cells in vitro. The development of ATLL in approximately 2% of persons chronically infected with HTLV-1 may suggest a specific immunegenetic background predisposing to CTL failure in a proportion of HTLV-1 carriers. The evolution of protoplanetary disks is believed to be driven largely by angular momentum transport resulting from magnetized disk winds and turbulent viscosity. The ionization of the disk that is essential for these processes has been thought to be due to host star coronal X-rays but could also arise from energetic particles produced by coronal flares, or traveling shock waves, and advected by the stellar wind. The purpose of this thesis is to study a symmetry of string theory known as T-duality. We focus on a particular example establishing the equivalence between a quantized string moving in a circular space of radius R and a dual string moving in a similar space of radius 1/R . We will show that this duality implies that the momentum of the string in one picture becomes the number of times the string is wound around the circle in the dual picture. We present two proofs of T-duality. The first reflects the standard interpretation of T-duality as an isomorphism of quantum theories. The second approa

AbstractGradual solar energetic-particle (SEP) events are “big proton events” and are usually much more “gradual” in their decay than in their onset. As their intensities increase, particles streaming away from the shock amplify Alfvén waves that scatter subsequent particles, increasing their acceleration, eventually limiting ion flow at the “streaming limit.” Waves generated by higher-speed protons running ahead can also throttle the flow of lower-energy ions, flattening spectra and altering abundances in the biggest SEP events. The purpose of this work is to develop a carrier system for delivering RNA molecules aimed to downregulate specific functions in T cells. In many forms of cancer, T cells that express the protein Forkhead Box P3 (Foxp3) are associated with cancer progression. These cells can be identified by CD4 and CD25, molecules express on the cell surface. Studies have shown that downregulation of Foxp3 can increase the ability of other immune cells to destroy tumors. A class of RNA molecules, commonly referred to as “siRNA”, bind to and degrade specific messenger RNA (mRNA) in a sequence-dependent manner

Résumé :
Abstract The ingestion of CMAS (Calcium-Magnesium-Alumino-Silicate) particles into aircraft engines is an issue for both the safety and resilience of aircraft. CMAS ingestion process can erode compressor blades, erode/infiltration thermal barrier coatings, and lead to overheating and stall. To better understand the physical details, this paper presents a novel approach to exploring individual CMAS dynamics in the context of melting particles. The methodology was accomplished by resolving the details of a single CMAS particle using the volume-of-fluid method. To account for thermal properties o

Résumé :
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a re-emerging class of smart materials whose novel behavior stems from their response to magnetic fields. Historically comprised of soft-magnetic carbonyl (spherical) iron particles embedded in highly compliant matrix materials, MRE research has focused on their apparent change in shear modulus (in excess of 60%) under a magnetic field. Recent work by the authors has departed from the experimental and theoretical focus on MREs made from soft-magnetic particles (S-MREs) to investigate MREs having hard-magnetic particle inclusions (H-MREs). While H-MRE ma

Résumé :
Magnetic responsive materials can be used in a variety of applications. For structural applications, the ability to create tunable moduli from relatively soft materials with applied electromagnetic stimuli can be advantageous for light-weight protection. This study investigated magnetorheological composite materials involving carbonyl iron particles (CIP) embedded into two different systems. The first material system was a model cementitious system of CIP and kaolinite clay dispersed in mineral oil. The magnetorheological behaviors were investigated by using parallel plates with an attached ma

Résumé :
Microelectronics is a complex field with ever-evolving technologies and business needs, fueled by decades of continued fundamental materials science and engineering advancement. Decades of dimensional scaling have led to the point where even the name microelectronics inadequately describes the field, as most modern devices operate on the nanometer scale. As we reach physical limits and seek more efficient ways for computing, research in new materials may offer alternative design approaches that involve much more than electron transport e.g. photonics, spintronics, topological materials, and a

Résumé :
The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) stream habitat monitoring protocol collects data to give park resource managers insight into the status of and trends in stream and near-channel habitat conditions (McDonald et al. 2018a). Wadeable stream assessments are currently implemented at the five SECN inland parks with wadeable streams: Horseshoe Bend National Military Park (HOBE), Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park (KEMO), Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park (OCMU), Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CHAT), and Congaree National Park (CONG).
