Résumé :
The connection between Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) decomposition and short-term market movements is investigated. Since SSA is a non-parametric approach, suitable to decompose general time-series into meaningful components, such as trends, oscillations and noise, it is proposed as a new oscillator-type Technical Indicator, replacing popular ones. New Technical Trading Rules (TTRs) are designed and applied to some major global stock indexes to illustrate the benefits in terms of revealing market movements. The performance is evaluated according to different risk-adjustment metrics and the empirical results reveal that the SSA-TTRs may outperform some popular technical oscillators and also the Buy & Hold strategy.

Résumé :
It is noted that the free harmonic vibrations of a classical pendulum are due to the mutual conversion of the kinetic energy of the load intothe potential energy of the spring. Oscillators with a different nature of energy exchange have been developed, for example, by converting the kinetic energy of a load into the energy of a magnetic field of a solenoid or the energy of an electric field of a capacitor. All these oscillatory systems and the like were a prerequisite for the creation of a biinert oscillator,in which the acceleration of one load occurs due to the braking of another, i. e. only kinetic energies are exchanged. The aim of the work is mathematical modeling of a multi-inert oscillatory mechanism. The main research methods in the framework of this work are methods of mathematical modeling and analysis. The methods used make it possible to obtain a reliable description of the studied objects. Inthe proposed multi-inert oscillator, inert bodies of mass m each carry out harmonic oscillations due to the mutual exchange of kinetic energy. The potential energy of the springs is not requiredfor this. Body vibrationsare free. A feature of a multi-inert oscillator is that the frequency of itsfree oscillations is not fixed and is determined mainly by the initial conditions. This feature can be very useful for technical applications, for example, for self-neutralization of mechanical reactive (inertial) power. n-gon, formed by inert bodies, carries out complex motion – orbital rotation around the center of coordinates and spin rotation around its axis passing through the center of the n-gon. Moreover, each load performs linear harmonic oscillations along its guide. With the arrangement of the guiding weights not in the form of a star, but in parallel to each other, the angles between the corresponding cranks must be 360/n degrees.

Résumé :
The diffusion flux given by the Fick’s law characterizethe mixing rate. A passive mixing strategy is proposed to enhance mixing of two fluids through perturbed jet low. A numerical study of passive mixers has been presented. This paper is focused on the modeling of a micro-injection systems composed of passive amplifier without mechanical part. The micro-system modeling is based on geometrical oscillators form. An asymmetric micro-oscillator design based on a monostable fluidic amplifier is proposed [2,7]. The characteristic size of the channels is generally about a few hundred of microns. The numerical results indicate that the mixing performance can be as high as 99 % within a typical mixing chamber of0.20 mm diameter inlet and 2.0 mm distance of nozzle - spliter. In addition, the results confirm that self-rotation in the circular mixer significantly enhances the mixing performance. The novel micro mixing method presented in this study provides a simple solution to mixing problems in microsystem.

Résumé :
The article discusses the method of bottomhole assembly (BHA) for the «Perfobore» technical system, investigated as a complex of elastic-viscous working elements - coupled oscillators located in a dynamically disturbed section of the assembly. The length of the section is determined using the group velocity of propagation of the energy of a packet of quasi-harmonic waves differing from each other in phase and frequency, with prevailing natural frequencies, which are calculated after statistical processing of the obtained dynamograms of phase trajectories. Then, the working elements of the technical system are assembled with selected natural frequencies and taking into account various bending and torsional stiffnesses of the component assemblies (oscillators), and the damping properties of the assemblies are enhanced by the additional placement of hydromechanical axial load regulators with a variable vibration isolation coefficient in the calculated places of the «motion stability nodes».

Résumé :
The search for models which can accurately forecast the market trend has developed over the past decades. Technical indicators and oscillators are the most usually employed inputs in the prediction models. These inputs basically rely on prices and the evolution of the index itself, which may cause some problems like multicolinearity and autocorrelation, in the case of linear models, or overoptimization and noise, in the case of neural networks. This paper proposes filtering the inputs to be employed in the models. To this end, their impact on the forecast will be analysed. A support vector machine will be used to this end, in order to characterize both inputs (indicators and oscillators) and output (market trend). Doing this, it can be assessed whether the relationship between the different inputs and the market trend offers relevant information regarding the contribution of the inputs in the prediction process and whether this contribution remains constant over time. Those inputs will be selected, which obtain more stable forecasts in order to obtain more consistent predictions.

Résumé :
Vortex-induced vibrations at lock-in conditions are modeled through generalized van der Pol-Duffing oscillators endowed with frequency-dependent coefficients, taking inspiration from fluid-elastic models. Accordingly, it is found that the limit-cycle amplitude and the non-linear frequency are mutually dependent (feedback effect), differently from the classic oscillator behavior. Consequently, the mechanical non-linearities, which are often believed to be unimportant, do affect the amplitude of motion. Examples concerning an ideal one degree-of-freedom van der Pol-Duffing oscillator and a two degree-of-freedom model, coarsely representative of a tower building, confirm the importance of this approach also from a technical point of view. Thus, non-linear geometric terms and modal interaction (even in non-resonant cases) can lead to non-negligible modifications of purely aeroelastic problems.

Résumé :
Over a long period of time, researchers have investigated the efficiency of financial markets. The widely accepted theory of the subject is the Efficient Market Hypothesis, which states that prices of financial assets are set efficiently. A common way to test this hypothesis is to analyze the returns generated by technical trading rules which uses historical prices in an attempt to predict future price development. This is also what this study aims to do. Using adjusted daily closing prices ranging over 2007 to 2019 for 5120 stocks listed on the U.S stock market, this study tests a momentum trading strategy called the stochastic oscillator in an attempt to beat a buy and hold strategy of the Russel 3000 stock market index. The stochastic oscillator is constructed in three different ways, the Fast%K, the Fast%D and the Slow%D, the difference being that a smoothing parameter is used in the Fast%D and Slow%D in an attempt to reduce the number of whiplashes or false trading signals. The mean returns of the technical trading strategies are tested against the mean returns of the buy and hold strategy using a non-parametric bootstrap methodology and also, the risk adjusted returns in terms of Sharpe Ratios are compared for the different strategies. The results find no significance difference between the mean returns of the buy and hold strategy and any of the technical trading strategies. Further, the buy and hold strategy delivers a higher risk adjusted return compared to the technical trading strategies, although, only by a small margin. Regarding the smoothing parameter applied to the strategies, it seems to fulfill its purpose by reducing the number of trades and slightly increasing the mean returns of the technical trading strategies. Finally, for deeper insight in the subject, a reading of "The efficiency of financial markets: A dual momentum trading strategy on the Swedish stock market" by Netzén Örn (2018) is recommended.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The work presented in this thesis is divided into two distinct sections. In the first, the functional neuroimaging technique of Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is described and a new technique is introduced for accurate combination of MEG and MRI co-ordinate systems. In the second part of this thesis, MEG and the analysis technique of SAM are used to investigate responses of the visual system in the context of functional specialisation within the visual cortex. In chapter one, the sources of MEG signals are described, followed by a brief description of the necessary instrumentation for accurate MEG recordings. This chapter is concluded by introducing the forward and inverse problems of MEG, techniques to solve the inverse problem, and a comparison of MEG with other neuroimaging techniques. Chapter two provides an important contribution to the field of research with MEG. Firstly, it is described how MEG and MRI co-ordinate systems are combined for localisation and visualisation of activated brain regions. A previously used co-registration methods is then described, and a new technique is introduced. In a series of experiments, it is demonstrated that using fixed fiducial points provides a considerable improvement in the accuracy and reliability of co-registration. Chapter three introduces the visual system starting from the retina and ending with the higher visual rates. The functions of the magnocellular and the parvocellular pathways are described and it is shown how the parallel visual pathways remain segregated throughout the visual system. The structural and functional organisation of the visual cortex is then described. Chapter four presents strong evidence in favour of the link between conscious experience and synchronised brain activity. The spatiotemporal responses of the visual cortex are measured in response to specific gratings. It is shown that stimuli that induce visual discomfort and visual illusions share their physical properties with those that induce highly synchronised gamma frequency oscillations in the primary visual cortex.

This chapter provides a more technical outline of the construction, starting with a solution to the Euler-Reynolds system and a correction v₁ = v + V, p₁ = p + P. The correction V is a divergence free vector field which oscillates rapidly compared to v. In the construction, there will always be a bounded number of waves Vsubscript I (at most 192) which are nonzero at any given time t. Each individual wave Vsubscript I composing V is a complex-valued, divergence free vector field that oscillates rapidly in only one direction. The chapter introduces several ways in which to represent each Vsubscript I. Finally, it presents five main error terms: the Transport term, the High–Low Interaction term, the High–High Interference terms, the Stress term, and the Mollification terms.

Résumé :
A hybrid system composed of a spin coupled to a mechanical degree of freedom is interesting for several reasons: enhancing the functionality of the spin and of the mechanical system, and in the quantum and semiclassical regimes. This chapter gives an overview of some of the goals of spin-coupled mechanical systems and then introduces the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre, its energy level structure, and its sensitivity to external fields, with a discussion on what makes NVs exciting for hybrid quantum technologies and in particular integration with mechanical oscillators. Simple group theory arguments will be introduced to explain the NV’s energy level structure and its coupling to strain. It concludes with a discussion of different NV centre-mechanical coupling mechanisms, specifically magnetic- and strain-based ones, with realistic values for the coupling strength and protocols for coupling, as well as technical challenges to achieving a functional NV-mechanical coupled system, particularly in the quantum regime.

Résumé :
This chapter critically engages relevant literature on the trajectories of disability inclusion in Technical Vocational Education and Training Centres (TVET) education and training systems. It challenges dominant epistemologies in critical disability studies that have been traditionally fore-grounded, imagined, and constructed within Westernized philosophical paradigms. For centuries, it has been difficult to re-imagine alternative forms of knowledge of impairment, disability, and debility from the subaltern standpoint. The author seeks to highlight the uneven ways through which knowledge systems on Disability Inclusion in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) oscillates between the so-called problematic dichotomies of the global North and Global South. This is achieved by critically weighing in the contribution and impact of legislation, policies, and newer perspectives on the Scholarship of Learning (SoL) from the global North that influences critical pedagogies on disability inclusion in TVET colleges in the Southern African context.

Résumé :
In critical activities and organizations, decision making in the face of complexity has been a growing normal. Complexity troubles humans due to cognitive limitations. Moreover, humans are merely able to understand cause-and-effect relationships that are close in time and space, not the paradigm of many complex socio-technical systems. Decision-making processes shall rely on models that help harness a problem´s associated complexity – among them the dynamics of supply chains. Models typically fall into two broad categories: mental and formal models. Supply chains are complex systems, which may exhibit complex behaviour patterns. Decisions and policies within organizational systems are the causes of many problems, among them undesirable oscillations and other problematic patterns of the parameters of interest. A system is a grouping of parts that work together for a purpose. Hence, the systems dynamics methodology is an adequate approach to deal with fuel supply chain management. A model was developed that helps manage marine gasoil supply chains in the context of the navy.

Résumé :
Abstract We consider in this paper the following system of coupled nonlinear oscillatorsx..+x-k(y-x)=εf(x,x.),y..+(1+δ)y-k(x-y)=εf(y,y.). In this system we assume ε to be a small parameter, i.e. 0 < ε ≪ 1. A coupling between the two oscillators is established through the terms involving the positive parameter k. The coupling may be interpreted as a mutual force depending on the relative positions of the two oscillators. For both ε and k equal to zero the two oscillators are decoupled and behave as harmonic oscillators with frequencies 1 and 1+δ, respectively. The parameter δ may therefore be viewed as a detuning parameter. Finally, the term ε f represents a small force acting upon each oscillator. Note that this force depends only on the position and velocity of the oscillator upon which the force is acting. To analyse the system’s dynamic behaviour we use the method of averaging. When k and δ are choosen such that no internal resonance occurs, one typically observes the following behaviour. If the trivial solution is unstable, solutions asymptotically tend to one of the two normal modes or to a mixed mode solution. For the special case with δ = 0 a system of two identical oscillators is found. If in addition k is O(ε) we obtain a 1 : 1 internal resonant system. The averaged equations may then be reduced to a system of three coupled equations — two for the amplitudes and one for the phase difference. Due to the fact that we consider identical oscillators there is a symmetry in the averaged equations. The normal mode solutions, as found for the non-resonant case, are still present. New mixed mode solutions appear. Moreover, Hopf bifurcations in the averaged system lead to limit cycles that correspond to oscillations in the original system with periodically modulated amplitudes and phases. We also consider the case with δ = O(ε), i.e. the case with nearly identical oscillators. If k = O(ε) again a 1 : 1 internal resonant system is found. Contrary to the previous cases the normal mode solutions no longer exist. Moreover, different bifurcations are observed due to the disappearance of the symmetry present in the system for s = 0. We apply some of the results obtained to a model describing aeroelastic oscillations of a structure with two-degrees-of-freedom.

Résumé :
Abstract The paper presents a discussion on relationships between the concepts of nonstationary, random and chaotic motion. The discussion is based on computer simulation results and the approximate theory of nonlinear oscillations. Two forced oscillators are considered: the dissipative unsymmetric oscillator and the self-excited symmetric system. It is concluded that chaotic component of motion can be interpreted as a sort of nonstationary “free vibration” with randomly modulated amplitude and phase. The proposed approximate model of chaos seems to blur a clear distinction between the traditional concepts of stochastic and deterministic, and between stationary and nonstationary system as well.

Résumé :
Abstract We present a perturbation solution for a linear oscillator with a variable damping coefficient involving the limit cycle of the van der Pol equation (van der Pol 1926). This equation arises as the variational equation governing the stability of in-phase vibration in a pair of identical van der Pol oscillators with linear coupling. The van der Pol oscillator has served as the classic example of a limit cycle oscillator, and coupled limit cycle oscillators appear in mathematical models of self-excited systems ranging from tube rows in cross flow heat exchangers to arrays of stomates in plant leaves. As in many systems modeled by coupled oscillators, criteria for phase-locking or synchronization are of fundamental importance in understanding the dynamics. In this paper we study a simple but interesting problem consisting of a pair of identical van der Pol oscillators with linear diffusive coupling which corresponds, in the mechanical analogy, to a spring connecting the masses of the two oscillators. Intuition and earlier first-order analyses suggest that the spring will pull the two masses together causing stable in-phase locking. However, previous results of a relaxation limit study (Storti and Rand 1986) indicate that the in-phase mode is not always stable and suggest the existence of an additional stability boundary. To resolve the apparent discrepancy, we obtain a new periodic solution of the variational equation as a power series in ε, the small parameter in the sinusoidal van de Pol oscillator. This approach follows Andersen and Geer’s (1982) solution for the limit cycle of an isolated van der Pol oscillator. The coupling strength corresponding to the periodic solution of the variational equation defines an additional stability transition curve which has only been observed previously in the relaxation limit. We show that this transition curve, which provides a consistent connection between the sinusoidal and relaxation limits, is O(ε2) and could not have been delected in O(ε) analyses. We determine the analytical expression for this stability transition curve to O(ε31) and show very favorable agreement with numerical results we obtained using an Adams-Gear method.

Résumé :
Abstract Limit cycle oscillators arise in a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and biological systems. Recently, emphasis has been placed on the study of systems of coupled limit cycles, such as cardiac oscillations. Synchronization criteria have remained a focus of most investigations. One area of investigation in the field of coupled limit cycles is studying the behavior of a pair of linearly coupled van der Pol oscillators (Low, 1998; Rand, 1980; Sliger, 1997). Previous investigations (Storti, 1993; Storti, 1996) found the stability regions of the coupled oscillators for their in-phase and out-of-phase modes numerically. The coupled oscillators can be viewed as a mechanical system, where the coupling parameters are equivalent to a spring and damper attached between two masses. With positive coupling (positive damping) a region was found (Storti, 1993; Storti, 1996) where the in-phase mode is unstable. This counter intuitive result is yet to be discovered in a physical system of two coupled limit cycle oscillators. This research focuses on finding the region with positive coupling parameters where the in-phase mode is unstable using a physical model of two linearly coupled van der Pol oscillators. The coupled van der Pol oscillators were modeled using an analog electric circuit.

Résumé :
The dynamics of a planar ring of N coupled identical, damped Duffing oscillators with external excitation is considered. Each oscillator is in 1:1 resonance with all other oscillators. The external forcing is a mono-frequency excitation near primary resonance with each oscillator and the analysis is considered in the context of weakly nonlinear systems. The symmetry of the system is exploited to determine, for an arbitrary number of oscillators, all possible classes of periodic solutions at the excitation frequency. These are fixed-point solutions for the system and are determined by the averaged equations. These solutions are classified into standing waves, traveling waves, and motions in-phase with the external forcing. Linear stability analysis is described for each solution class containing the highest degree of symmetry. To continue the study to motions with smaller degrees of symmetry, numerical simulations using the bifurcation analysis and branch continuation software AUTO 97 are utilized. The study presents the specific example of the dynamics of three Duffing oscillators.

Résumé :
Abstract In the presented paper the response of nonlinear random oscillators is calculated by the numerical solution of the associated Fokker-Planck-Equation. This approach can be used to approximate the invariant probability density of chaotic nonlinear oscillators or to calculate the response of a nonlinear oscillator, driven by additive white noise. A weighted residual approach is proposed to solve the Fokker-Planck-Equations numerically. By this method the partial differential equation is transformed to a coupled set of linear ordinary differential equations. These equations can be derived easily, because the integrals associated to the Galerkin procedure can be solved analytically. Considering stationary densities the solution is given by a generalized Eigenproblem. Utilizing sparse matrix techniques the solution can be calculated very efficiently.

This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a 1D array of magnetically coupled MEMS oscillators. To facilitate future research and innovation, this paper details the model used to predict wave propagation behavior in the microfabricated array. The investigations model the oscillator array as a series of clamped-clamped beams that are coupled via magnetic proof masses. The contributions to system dynamics of the beam and magnetic interactions of each oscillator are theorized. Finally, the dynamic behavior for the entire array is investigated with a series of theoretical trend studies.

Résumé :
In this work we study a system of three van der Pol oscillators, x, y and w, coupled as follows: x¨−ε(1−x2)x˙+x=εμ(w−x)y¨−ε(1−y2)y˙+y=εμ(w−y)w¨−ε(1−w2)w˙+p2w=εμ(x−w)+εμ(y−w) Here the x and y oscillators are identical, and are not directly coupled to each other, but rather are coupled via the w oscillator. We investigate the existence of the in-phase mode x = y for ε ≪ 1. To this end we use the two variable expansion perturbation method (also known as multiple scales) to obtain a slow flow, which we then analyze using the software products MACSYMA and AUTO. Our motivation for studying this system comes from the presence of circadian rhythms in the chemistry of the eyes. We model the circadian oscillator in each eye as a van der Pol oscillator (x and y). Although there is no direct connection between the two eyes, they are both connected to the brain, especially to the pineal gland, which is here represented by a third van der Pol oscillator (w).
