Résumé :
The absense or presence of death in the public discourse has been on the death studies agenda for a long time. Although the tone of this debate was once set by writers who bemoaned the hidden nature of contemporary death and the un-healthy, dishonest modern death ways, recent research has focused on death’s re-emergence into public discourse, not least via mass and social media. This study aims to contribute to the debate by mapping teenagers’ perceptions of death and the process by which they arrive at them. Furthermore, this study looks into religion’s role in this process. This is a relevant aspect considering that the Church of Sweden is still responsible for funeral organization, despite the 2000 church/state split. This mixed methods study combines data from a survey of three upper sec-ondary schools in three different Swedish cities with data from semi-structured interviews with students from each of the three schools. Socialization theory (more specifically death socialization) and unpacked religion are used to analyse what shapes the teenagers’ perceptions of death. The author concludes that alt-hough the teenagers are well aware of the presence of death in media, this pres-ence does not shape the way they think about death. Death socialization instead takes place in the primary group and only in connection to primary group deaths. The religious funeral remains important to the teenagers, but it is disconnected from their personal beliefs and primarily important as a tradition.

Résumé :
Adolescence – that tricky time when children have not yet reached adulthood – is a time of much disturbance, change and growth. Faced with a body that changes, stretches and grows in all directions, as does the mind, the adolescent finds that they are not who they once were, and that their concerns are not what they once were. According to David Punter, the nature of adolescence is integral to Gothic writing; for him, adolescence can be seen as a time when there is a fantasised inversion of boundaries: ‘where what is inside finds itself outside (acne, menstrual blood, rage) and what we think should be visibly outside (heroic dreams, attractiveness, sexual organs) remain resolutely inside and hidden’ (Punter 1998, 6). However, this is to ‘Gothicise’ adolescents - to view adolescents themselves as Gothic beings – rather than to understand what the true nature of their concerns and fears really are. This thesis intends to investigate, therefore, those fears and concerns as they are represented through the medium of Gothic texts written for adolescents. I propose to examine what happens to the Gothic mode in the gap between young children’s literature and adult fiction and will look at, through the Gothic lens, Young Adult literature which explores the teenager's relationships with issues such as sex, death and autonomy. As the Gothic is ‘erotic at root’ (Punter 1996, 191) and often focused on the centrality of sexuality, I explore the nature of ‘changing bodies’ and consider the adolescent’s burgeoning sexuality and desire for romantic relationships; however, the Gothic is not just about sex, and I also examine adolescent engagement with the concept of death, before finally going on to study issues of adolescent power and autonomy.

Death is one of the most mysteries and terrifying experiences in our life. Even if it is as natural thing as birth, death gives us completely different feelings. Most often it is fear, insecurity, panic and other negative feelings. During the ages man‘s relations with death changed. It was slow process. In the past death was met with respect, without bigger fear, panic, even with a little bit of admiration and curiosity. In our days death is considered as one of the worst things that could happen to human, taken as a punishment for all sins and the life spent in a bad way. Relationship with death depends on many different factors for each person. Age, gender, education, earlier experience with death, belief and religion could be the main criteria why people understand death one way or another. The object of this work – to investigate the connection between religiousness and understanding death, students and teenagers being as a case in this study. 224 participants were investigated (120 students – 70 girls and 52 boys, and also 102 teenagers aged 14-16, that contained 60 girls and 42 boys). Questionnaire with the separate scales for religion and understanding death and general questions about age, gender, education and marital status was presented to the participants. It was found that older participants propagate religious attitude more, while for the younger participants belief and religion creed is more important. Also it was found that intensity of the fear of death... [to full text]

Résumé :
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the needs of sibling-bereaved adolescents in high schools in the Western Cape, South Africa. A grounded theory approach was used to examine unexpected sibling bereavement with specific focus on participant perceptions and experiences regarding support provided by their high school. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with siblings who were in high school when their brother or sister died suddenly. An argument is developed for why high schools need insight into effective ways of supporting sibling-bereaved adolescents as they attempt to fit in and function at school. As this study was conducted in a multi-language environment, attention is given to the differing abilities of adolescents to articulate their bereavement experience. The effectiveness of focus groups with this population and the importance of providing psycho-education support during the interviewing process are emphasised. The scarcity of studies on adolescent bereavement in South Africa can be attributed to a combination of the emotional painfulness of the subject for adolescents and gatekeeping by school personnel and parents. Understandably, concerns about disclosure and fresh trauma/grief triggering may be given precedence over research. Themes grounded in the data uncovered a psychosocial journey involving disruption, transition and changed self. Bereaved siblings felt singled out as different from their peers when they return to school. Hence discreet acknowledgement and disclosure of the death is important to them. A key finding is that accomplishment plays a significant role in boosting the flagging morale of bereaved adolescents. Accomplishment aids their inviduation and stimulates them to regain interest in their own life goals. While individual teachers and other school personnel were considered helpful, there was an absence of a structured plan of support for bereaved adolescents in the schools examined. Attachment theory foregrounded an explanation of why the loss of a sibling during adolescence can have a lasting influence on the future of those left behind. Most adolescents in the study evidenced a desire for an on-going connection with their sibling who died while they simultaneously took on new roles to try and fill the void created by their death. Findings from this study are intended to provide richer insight into the complexity of adolescent sibling bereavement and may also serve to inform educational and health care interventions for bereaved learners in South Africa.

Shen, Li. « Sudden death and pump failure death in heart failure ». Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8651/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Sudden death and pump failure death are two major modes of death in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HF-REF) and in patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction (HF-PEF). There have been advances in evidence-based treatments in patients with HF-REF over the last two decades, along with the changing patient characteristics in both HF-REF and HF-PEF populations. It is of great interest and significance to discover if these changes have translated into temporal changes (and corresponding trends over time) in the risks of sudden death and pump failure death in both populations. Apart from examining any changes in the rates of mode-specific death in population level, it is also of interest and importance to estimate the risks for sudden death and pump failure death in individual patients. Accurate risk prediction can aid in better risk stratification. In patients with HF-REF, identifying high-risk subgroups would help target the device therapy to those most likely to benefit and identifying low-risk subgroups would avoid unnecessary implantation, thus improving the cost-effectiveness of the therapy. In patients with HF-PEF, identifying high-risk subgroups would enable further research into the efficacy of device therapy in this population. The aims of this work were to examine the trends in the rates of sudden death and pump failure death over time in patients with HF-REF and in patients with HF-PEF, and to separately develop validated models to predict sudden death and pump failure death in both populations. Given that there are limited data on mode-specific death from community-based studies, I used data from clinical trials which have more detailed and standardised sub-classification and adjudication of mortal events. Besides, compared to community-based studies, clinical trials have more detailed baseline characterisation, which allows more complete multivariable adjustment to account for confounding and between-study differences. Therefore, a cohort of 46,163 patients with HF-REF enrolled in 13 clinical trials conducted between 1995-2015 and a cohort of 10,517 patients with HF-PEF in 3 clinical trials over the period 1999-2013 were included in this thesis. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the trends in the rates of sudden death and pump failure death over time in both populations respectively. The cumulative incidences for sudden death and pump failure death in each trial at different time points during follow-up were calculated with the cumulative incidence function method, counting the competing risk of death from other causes. The risk for each mode of death across trial arms and by HF duration was examined using the Cox regression models, with further adjustment for a number of confounding variables. The models to predict sudden death and pump failure death in patients with HF-REF were separately developed in PARADIGM-HF and validated in ATMOSPHERE. Models for both modes of death in HF-PEF were developed in I-PRESERVE and validated in CHARM-Preserved as well as TOPCAT. These models were constructed using a competing risk approach with the Fine-Gray sub-distributional hazards regression analysis. Model performance was examined by assessing calibration (i.e. the agreement between the observed and predicted cumulative incidences over time) and discrimination (i.e. the ability to separate patients at higher risk from those at lower risk). I found that the risks of sudden death and pump failure death in patients with HF-REF have fallen across 13 clinical trials over the period 1995-2015, consistent with a cumulative use of evidence-based therapies in this population. The absolute rates of sudden death and pump failure death were very low in the early follow-up after randomisation in patients with HF-REF who received modern evidence-based treatment. Longer standing HF was associated with greater risks of sudden death and, particularly, pump failure death in HF-REF. The risks of sudden death and pump failure death were consistently low across the 3 largest clinical trials in patients with HF-PEF, with little difference by experimental treatment in any trial. There was a downward trend in the rates of sudden death and pump failure death across these trials over time, in parallel with a changing characteristic of patients enrolled in these trials. Nevertheless, sudden death and pump failure death remained the most common modes of death, altogether accounting for the majority of CV death. The absolute rates of sudden death and pump failure death in patients with HF-PEF were extremely low in the early follow-up after randomisation. Longer standing HF was associated with a slightly higher risk of sudden death and a substantially higher risk of pump failure death in HF-PEF. The sudden death and pump failure death models in patients with HF-REF I developed in the largest and most contemporary cohort (PARADIGM-HF), included a number of variables collected in routine clinical practice, and accounted for the prognostic impact of the competing risk of death from other causes. The discriminating ability was modest for the sudden death model but excellent for the pump failure death model. Both models showed good calibration and were robust when externally validated in ATMOSPHERE. The prognostic models in patients with HF-PEF I developed in I-PRESERVE, using simple demographic and clinical variables, showed good discrimination and calibration for both sudden death and pump failure death, and were robust in external validation in CHARM-Preserved and TOPCAT. The performance of both models was further improved with the inclusion of NT-proBNP. In conclusion, I have found that the risks of sudden death and pump failure death have declined over time both in patients with HF-REF and in patients with HF-PEF based on clinical trial data. The patterns of change in the rates of both modes of death over time need to be examined in community-based populations. The prognostic models for both modes of death, showing reasonable performance, can be considered for use in risk stratification for mode-specific death in both populations, aiding in decision making in device therapy in similar patients in HF-REF and helping with patient selection for device interventions in future trials in HF-PEF.

Résumé :
This study had four basic purposes: The first purpose was to examine the dimensions of personal meanings of death (PMDS) perceived by university students. Secondly, understanding how these meanings and self reported religiosity contribute to predict death anxiety
third to predict death fear from PMDS and self reported religiosity. Lastly, to investigate gender differences between females and males in terms of personal meanings of death, death anxiety and death fear. The sample consisted of 498 undergraduate students from METU, of whom 271 were male and 227 female. Three instruments-Personal Meanings of Death Scale (PMDS), Templer&rsquo
s Death Anxiety (DAS) and Collet &
Lester Fear of Death Scale (FDS)- and a demographic Data Form were administered to participants. Turkish versions of DAS (Ertufan, 2000) and FDS (Ertufan, 2000) were used. Factor analysis was employed to investigate dimensions of Personal Meanings of Death Scale (PMDS) in Turkish university sample. Secondly, t-test was conducted to investigate gender differences in terms of personal meanings of death, death anxiety and death fear. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate how Personal Meanings of Death and self reported religiosity predicted death anxiety and death fear of Turkish University students. Results of the factor analysis of PMDS revealed three factors, extinction, afterlife, motivation/legacy. Results indicated that there was significant gender differences in terms of &ldquo
extinction&rdquo
dimension of death, females had significantly higher mean scores on &ldquo
extinction&rdquo
dimension than males. Additionally, there was significant gender difference in terms of death anxiety and death fear, in that, females had higher scores on both death anxiety and death fear. Results of stepwise regression analysis indicated that extinction is the main predictor of both death anxiety and death fear.

Résumé :
As aid-in-dying legislation expands across the United States, this study examines the dynamics influencing participation in Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act. In addition to data from secondary sources, this thesis analyzes field research data collected in Oregon, including 14 in-depth interviews with volunteers and employees of two advocacy organizations at the center of legalized physician-assisted death. Themes emerged including the conditions that motivate participation, the importance of both personal and professional autonomy, the significance of a good death, and the growth of open dialogues about end of life choices. This thesis concludes with a discussion of the impact Death with Dignity laws could have across the United States, with a specific focus on the state of Tennessee.

Résumé :
This dissertation takes as its central topic visual narratives in Death with Dignity Storytelling and posits the author’s ideas of a beautiful death and the heard gaze. Its methodology includes a textual analysis of such images, which in turn leads to a typology, and the use of a digital tool to “sum images” to test the veracity of the typology. What creates the impulse to look at images of pain, suffering the withering body, the compulsion to bear witness to misery? That question is in part answered by Sontag (2003) Regarding the Pain of Others—“we are spectators of calamities” (p. 18)—and is evident in the indefinite pronoun that hangs at the end of the slim volume’s title. Because it is in those others, that we see ourselves. A Beautiful Death: Visual Representation in Death With Dignity Storytelling considers two case studies as examination and proofs of its claims.

Résumé :
Wordsworth is known as the poet of joy and hope, and to associate his name with death may seem at first strange. Yet, according to his own estimation, he was the poet not simply of joy but of “the very heart of man," of "human kind, and what we are”, of "men as they are men within themselves." Any vision of human nature which does not take into account the facts of mortality and bereavement is blinkered and inevitably inadequate and Wordsworth was committed to clarity of perception and the fullest insights of the Imagination. He did not shy away from the implications of “our mortal Nature”; throughout his career, he sought to portray in poetry the place of death in human life. Two basic ways of understanding mortality are considered in this thesis: the first is death as disjunction, extinction, the end; the second is death as part of a larger continuity, a threshold, a stage. The conflict between these two visions was fundamental to Wordsworth's thought, and writing. Isolation and despair were the corollaries of the first vision, while the capacity for love and hope which was essential to the life of the human spirit was nurtured and made possible by the second. Wordsworth wrestled in his writings with the effects of these different visions of death on the complexities of human nature. The thesis has been divided into three main parts. Section I - Death in Wordsworth's Time - seeks to place the poet into a historical context. Section II - Death in Wordsworth' Life - is concerned with Wordsworth's personal experiences of loss and feelings about his own mortality, And in Section III - Death in Wordsworth's Poetry - what he had to say about death is considered in relation to some of the other major themes in his poetry.

Résumé :
In this dissertation I consider the current controversy surrounding the definition of death in certain rare situations which arise in response to advances in medical technology. In relation to these, I criticise various approaches which seek a resolution to such problems, arguing that all of them involve unjustified and unexamined assumptions as to the nature of death, and other related concepts. In chapter 1, I introduce and define the nature of the problem, arguing that whilst the problem can be seen to spring from technological advances, these merely reveal an inherent ambiguity. In chapter 2, I examine the so-called 'strictly-biological approach', and argue that its premise (that we can treat death as a purely factual matter) is flawed. In chapter 3, I support this conclusion with a broader attack upon conceptual essentialism, of which the strictly-biological approach can be seen as a foremost example. I also argue that this means that the nature of the problem is one that is not amenable to the sort of conceptual analysis that many might use to resolve the problem. Chapter 4 looks at the idea that biological function - the central criterion of the strictly-biological approach - cannot be considered an intrinsic, mind-independent feature of the world (and therefore, neither can a strictly-biological definition of death). Chapters 5 and 6 look at non-strictly-biological attempts to define death (what I term 'partly-biological' views) - namely the capacity for consciousness and personal identity respectively - and argue that both these approaches, far from resolving the problem, merely shift it to a different ground. In chapter 7,1 present a different picture of death as an 'observer-relative' feature of the world (to use John Searle's terminology), and argue that the resolution of the problem must have more in common with practices (e.g. in sport) where similar ambiguities are occasionally faced. In chapter 8, I further explore the consequences of the observer-relative status of death, arguing that this means that a much wider degree of variance and mutability is possible in relation to the related concepts of 'self and 'death', and that certain religious viewpoints and scenarios in science-fiction literature embody just such a 'dialogue with death' and present us with what I term notions of 'the expanded self. Finally, I briefly outline some of the consequences of my arguments for medicine and public policy decisions, and suggest certain avenues for future research, arguing that rather than seeking to arrive at a single, unified definition of death, we should instead search for ways of coping with multiple parallel 'redefinitions' of death.

Résumé :
As people living in 2017, what, if anything, have we come to know about art as a whole? What can we say about the artistic impulse? What is art for, and what does it stand to show us about ourselves today? In this paper, I try to address these questions, from the standpoint of both an artist and a human being. Examining art as ancient as the prehistoric cave paintings, as well as art of the present day, I discuss certain ontological traits that art-making has both lost and maintained over the years. Through Heidegger’s philosophy of Being, Tillich’s theology of New Being, and Stephen King’s depictions of the uncanny, I explore the idea that all creative acts ultimately point us back to our own mortality and finitude.

Résumé :
My work explores hallucinatory landscapes of the US American West by using a combination of painting styles outside of the Western painting canon. I cross-reference painting and cinema, interweaving video, acrylic paint and the panorama to create a satirical homage to the history and present state of the USA. However, through an earnest devotion to the medium - both painting and cinema - I find my criticisms also yearn to hold onto a belief in a myth I know to be false. This is an American History conversation about artifice and consumerism through advertising. I use Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert as my metaphor. Las Vegas’ rapidly expanding population has displaced actual plants and animals to replace them with artificial sculptures of the desert cactus and coyote. This desert landscape occupies what was previously Mexico and before that Indigenous lands. TV and hallucinogens play a part in my work - as a means to tap into the psychological staticky holiness of the desert, and I use certain painting techniques to mimic the optical effects of these phenomena. These techniques reference my experience with theater backdrop painting and psychedelic movie posters as well as kitsch hobbyist landscape painting. My focus is the specific territory outside of the National Parks service, the government lands leased to mining companies and housing developers. These are the mystical desert tracts of spacious landscape, just as ecologically important to the whole, yet considered “not quite pretty enough” to warrant a National Park sign or roaming ranger.

Résumé :
This paper focuses on the evolution of the theme the Triumph of Death, the representation of the personification of death and the dead in the late Middle Ages. The first part of this thesis represents different points of view of art historians and historians concerning the death and the afterlife. There follows a short description and analysis of the cultural environment especially regarding literature which closely relates to the visual art and the representation of death. The last part describes three themes of death and the most important representations in frescoes, panels, bas-reliefs of the Triumph of Death evincing the main idea and the underlying structure and composition. Two different ways of representation can be distinguished: the Triumph of Death in the shape of the apocalyptic rider as appearing in the Revelation of Saint John the Evangelist and the Triumph of Death based on Petrarch's poem the Trionfi.

Résumé :

In studies on Near Death Experiences (NDE) data has been collected by using the recently developed scaling methods, the scale developed by Ring and the Greyson NDE Scale. In order to illustrate the problems in the empirical study of NDEs, my intention is to compare the Greyson NDE-scale with the most common theories on NDEs.  After series of modifications the final scale consisted of a questionnaire consisting of sixteen different questions, that yielded into four different areas, Cognitive components, Emotional components, Paranormal components, and Transcendental components.

In the end the theory that has the most likely possibility to explain NDEs in the future must be the Dying Brain theory, but one should not disclose the different features of the Afterlife theory (but without the origin explanation).

Résumé :
The contemporary juridico-political and bioethical debate over physician assisted dying has emerged as one of the most divisive of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Commonly strained through Western conceptions of individual rights and near ubiquitous calls for the respect an abstractly defined human dignity, popular discourse on assisted dying tends to promote universal understandings of both human beings as well as ethical, legal, moral action. This thesis, however, holds these debates in abeyance preferring rather to explore the ways in which the possibility of an assisted death creates a more meaningful dying space for many Canadian advocates. And though I cannot answer for everyone, for many of the 24 individuals I spent months interviewing, “hanging out” with and generally following around to various meetings/training sessions, the assisted death is not some nihilistic response to the suffering of our materially bounded/feeling bodies, but a contemporary recurrence of a deeply spiritual, relational and artful dying.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The extraordinary body of Sacred Harp music has been dubbed "the oldest continuously sung American music." Steven Marini, scholar of sacred arts, proposes that the Sacred Harp community welcomes anyone into their singings, regardless of their religious beliefs. His analysis does not take into account the emphasis placed on conversion to Christianity that is demonstrated by the lyrics and the rituals of the Sacred Harp community, however. Religion is not "a matter of personal faith" to Sacred Harp singers as Marini suggests, but a matter of a very specific set of faith commitments. The implications of these commitments for Sacred Harp singers determine their eternal destiny. An investigation into the lyrics of The Sacred Harp hymnal reveals a preoccupation with death, always with intent to point toward the individual "religious" choice of eternal death or eternal life and the desire to share that knowledge with anyone who comes in contact with this remarkable phenomenon.

Résumé :
This thesis arises at the meeting place of a philosophical and a thanatological treatment of the book of Qohelet. A philosophical treatment is defended on the grounds of previous studies of the type of thinking evidenced in the text, as well as a comparison with ancient notions of philosophy which suggest that philosophy concerns the type of questions asked, the method of answering the questions, the answers to the questions, and the purpose of the endeavour. A thanatological treatment is defended both on the grounds of previous studies of the text as well as on the grounds of clear evidence that the text is very concerned with the issue of death. From a philosophical perspective it is assumed the book says something about such themes as beauty, knowledge, states of being, ethics, and the benefits of a philosophical outlook. These philosophical categories are combined with the text’s thanatology. The thesis therefore presents: a death aesthetic, in which death can be beautiful; an epistemology of death, in which we are shown to possess certain knowledge of our own mortality in contrast to the lack of understanding we possess about the events of life; a phenomenology of death, or a study of the state of being dead, in which it is seen that death can only ever be the object of our gaze, and we can never experience our own death; an ethics of death, or more precisely an ethics of suicide, in which it is asked, if suicide is appropriate, under what conditions it is better to be dead than alive; and, finally, the death-based nature of the philosophy itself, in which it is seen that one cannot be wise without thinking on death, and that such thoughts confer a particular sort of life on the wise person.

Résumé :
Death is a universal event that all living things experience. Older adults, in particular, are more mindful of death than younger generations because of their proximity and increased exposure to it. In addition, thoughts of one’s own death often increase with the death of a spouse. Previous research has explored the role of social support in death acceptance and the effect of previous marital satisfaction on a widow’s well-being. However, there is a lack of research regarding the experience of a widow’s personal death acceptance relative to spousal death acceptance and marital satisfaction. This phenomenological study aims to better understand the personal death acceptance of eight older widows (age 65+) through their experiences with marital satisfaction and spousal death acceptance. Seven women and one man participated in two rounds of semi-structured telephone interviews and completed supplemental surveys regarding their marriage and death attitudes. Findings indicate that essential dimensions of recalled high marital satisfaction and spousal death acceptance relates to experiences of positive personal death acceptance.
