Texte intégralThe purpose of this study was to determine the images of aging of a small sample of Early Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1951. The Baby Boomers are a generation consisting of those born between 1946 and 1964. This study focuses on a narrower range of birth years in order to capture the images of aging of those now 60 and over who came of age in the 1960s and early 1970s. They represent the first wave of the Baby Boom Generation to reach age 65, society's marker of "old age." Baby Boomers are the largest generation in history and currently 10,000 of them are turning 65 every day. The questions posed in this study were to explore how these Early Baby Boomers expect to age, how their generational experience influences their image of aging, and how that image differs from that of previous generations.
Using a phenomenological and hermeneutical research method, eight men and eight women with like ethnic, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics were interviewed. Through recordings and verbatim transcriptions the collective meaning of life, aging influences, fears, and expected life spans were determined. The collective results were compared to literature of aging stereotypes of previous generations. This select group reported that they will not age and are surprised when experiencing small signs of aging. Work is what brings meaning to their lives and they have no plans of retiring. They expect to maintain control over the length and quality of their lives. These Early Baby Boomers expect to establish a new image of aging.
As the numbers of Baby Boomers age and lifespan lengthens, unavoidable losses will occur. Researchers predict an increase in depression, addiction, and dementia. The Early Baby Boomer expects their needs to be met and as those losses occur they will increasingly seek mental health professionals to "fix" their emotional responses. It is important for mental health professionals to understand the unique generational lens from which Boomers view aging in order to provide quality assessment, recommendations, referral, and treatment.
Key words: boomer; aging; generation; image; mental health; retirement; lifespan.

Texte intégralThe purpose of this research is to showcase an alternative solution for parents with children under 5 years, who will be able to reach a pediatrician network through a virtual platform that is secure, affordable and customized, this will also allow to generate income for such doctors, and at the same time elevate their personal brand through social media. As part of the business case analysis, we ran a study that allowed us to identify our target market, obtaining a result of 77,500 families within the socioeconomic class “C”, with children between 0 and 5 years, located in key districts of the Metropolitan area of Lima, Peru. Also, when evaluating the current level of competence, we identified a niche whit a significant growth potential. This researched also allowed us to the define a business model, which aims to connect pediatricians and parents through a virtual platform, named Baby Salud. The business’ profits will consist on commissions charged per each appointment between doctor and patient, settled through our application. The platform’s design enables the option to schedule a virtual or face-to-face appointment with pediatricians quickly, customized and at an affordable cost. Our added value will consist in execute strict filters and monitoring to affiliated pediatricians, in order to ensure a high quality attention for patients; in addition, the application will provide, with no additional cost, access to a virtual log in which doctors will record a unified medical history, accessible to parents at all times.

This work proposes to develop a reflection about the process of intersubjectivity that begins during the initial relationship between a mother and her baby. Our approach seeks to study the interaction between the Self and the Other at a moment in which the Other finds itself in a conflicting position, in which at the same time it mirrors and is similar while still remains the Other. Using as a principal base the psychoanalytical theory of Winnicott, we approach the process of subjectivation highlighting its intersubjective dimension mutually created by the mother-child pair. In this manner, the psychological development of the baby as well as the becoming a mother of a specific baby are considered processes built through a non-verbal dialogue which is established between the mother and the newborn in the paradoxical experience of being one and being separate.

Many extensions of the standard model predict heavy metastable particles which may be modeled as solitons (skyrmions of the Higgs field), relating their particle number to a winding number. Previous work has shown that the electroweak interactions admit processes in which these solitons decay, violating standard model baryon number. We motivate the hypothesis that baryon-number-violating decay is a generic outcome of collisions between these heavy particles. We do so by exploring a 2+ 1 dimensional theory which also possesses metastable skyrmions. We use relaxation techniques to determine the size, shape and energy of static solitons in their ground state. These solitons could decay by quantum mechanical tunneling. Classically, they are metastable: only a finite excitation energy is required to induce their decay. We attempt to induce soliton decay in a classical simulation by colliding pairs of solitons. We analyze the collision of solitons with varying inherent stabilities and varying incident velocities and orientations. Our results suggest that winding-number violating decay is a generic outcome of collisions. All that is required is sufficient (not necessarily very large) incident velocity; no fine-tuning of initial conditions is required.

Texte intégralThe purpose of this study was to investigate Baby Boomers? knowledge of Alzheimer?s disease (AD) and how a boomer?s age, race/ethnicity, sex, and contact with the disease were associated with knowledge levels. Knowledge was tested using the Alzheimer?s Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS). Results included 86 participants and indicated that there was a direct relationship between the age of Baby Boomers and their overall knowledge of AD in that the older the individual the more knowledgeable they were about AD. Furthermore, the following results were obtained about knowledge of AD based on the subscales of the ADKS: the older an individual, the more knowledge they had about symptoms, females were less knowledgeable about the risk factors than males in the sample, Hispanics were less knowledgeable about assessment and diagnosis of AD than other ethnicities, the longer an individual had contact with someone with AD, the more knowledgeable they were on the course of the disease process.
