Cardiovascular disease is common in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) independently predicts cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Pathological changes in the systemic vasculature have been proposed as potential mechanisms linking COPD to cardiovascular disease, and patients with COPD may be at increased risk of acute myocardial infarction during acute exacerbations. Notwithstanding causation, FEV1 may be a useful prognostic marker in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This thesis examined these three aspects of cardiovascular c

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cancer, cardiovascular (heart diseases or stroke), respiratory (COPD or asthma) and metabolic diseases (diabetes) are chronic conditions that represent a major global health problem of the 21st century.

It was hypothesized that Respiratory heat and moisture loss (RHML) would be altered in patients with Asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to the effects of airway inflammation and re-modeling. By designing a novel device incorporating humidity, temperature and flow sensors, RHML was measured in 25 normal controls, 33 asthmatics and 17 patients with COPD. In normal subjects RHML was found to be dependent on breathing pattern as defined by tidal volume and minute ventilation whereas no association was found between RHML and body surface area. At matched breathing patterns

Résumé :
The studies in this thesis evaluated the physical activity (PA) in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), identified strategies to optimise PA, determined the effects of a supervised walking training program on performance during the endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT) and determined the minimal detectable difference for the ESWT.The measurement techniques used included: PA using motion sensors; HRQoL assessment; Fear of Falling Questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; and functional exercise testing.

Résumé :
Rationale: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is not only a common lung disease but is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) helps optimize function and independence by increasing exercise capacity, reducing symptoms and improving health related quality of life (HRQL). Exercise training is certainly a key component of the PR programs; however, many of its aspects still need to be better defined such as optimal exercise assessment and training modality for these patients. The general purpose of this thesis was to generate new knowledge that
