Sheep production systems in south-west Victoria are based predominantly on perennial ryegrass pastures, resulting in highly seasonal growth and declining feed quantity and nutritive value in late spring and summer. These changes result in reduced animal performance and increased CH4 emissions per kg DM intake. A potential alternative to the feedbase used in south-west Victoria that provides high quality and quantity of feed in late spring and early summer are legume-based pastures, such as clovers and lucerne. This experiment examined the impact of legume-based pastures on the growth rates and

Sheep housed after grazing and offered straw as a feed show reluctance to eat for several days. Evidence exists to indicate that eating habits can be manipulated through a learning process, especially if manipulation occurs pre-weaning. Australian research by Arnold and Mailer (1977) with unpalatable pastures, and Green, Elwin, Mottershead, Keogh and Lynch (1984) with whole cereal grain, showed that sheep exposed to these feeds early in life were more willing to accept the feeds later in life than others not exposed. The present experiment investigated whether this observation was applicable to

Modal theory has been fraught with shortcomings and inconsistencies from the Renaissance to the present, but the Phrygian mode has proven especially problematic, earning a reputation as the unruly black sheep of the modal family. Much of the difficulty stems from the inadequacy of the clausula in mi to serve as an effective terminal cadence, the threat of mi contra fa between scale degrees 5 and 2 (B and F), and the tendency of Phrygian works to prefer the fourth and sixth degrees (A and C) as cadential goals. Sheep (Ovis aries) were domesticated around 10,000 years ago and have since become an integral part of human agriculture, providing essential resources, such as wool, meat, and milk. Over the past century, advances in communication and agricultural productivity have driven the evolution of selective breeding practices, further enhancing the value of sheep in the global economy. Recently, the rapid development of whole-genome resequencing (WGR) technologies has significantly accelerated research in sheep molecular biology, facilitating the discovery of genetic underpinnings for critical traits.

Résumé :
Central problems in sheep and dairy cattle production are reproductive failure due to embryonic/fetal mortality and low birth weights, especially in prolific breeds, and reduced milk yields which adversely affect neonatal survival and economy of production. The sheep placenta expresses lactogenic (ovine placental lactogen, oPL) and somatogenic (ovine placental growth hormone, oGH) hormones. Our research has focused on the biological roles of oPL and oGH in function of the uterine endometrium during gestation and the mammary gland during pregnancy and lactation. Major conclusions were that: ( 1

Résumé :
The key objectives of this BARD project were to: (1) study long-term effects of immunization of prepubertal ewes against recombinant ovine placental lactogen (roPL) on subsequent birth weights of their lambs and their milk production; (2) optimize the anti-roPL immunization protocol using adjuvant preparations acceptable to producers and regulatory agencies; and (3) determine the physiological mechanism(s) whereby immunization against oPL increases fetal growth and development and mammogenesis. These objectives were based on key findings from a previous BARD project that: (a) immunization of e
