Résumé :
The relationship between mother and child has been one of interest to attachment theorists who have studied this relationship following Bowlby’s (1969/1982) proposition that children are attached to their mother. They suggest that their mother is guided by a caregiving behavioural system to provide care and protection to her child. It has been proposed that this system develops throughout life, reaching a peak in its maturity during pregnancy and the transition to motherhood, however the ontology of this system has not previously been studied. Other researchers have proposed that the relationship during pregnancy is reflective of the mother being attached to her foetus. Although many researchers have studied the relationship between mother and foetus and mother and child, very few have looked at these constructs together. This thesis aims to draw together the differing methodologies to provide a better understanding of what impacts a mother’s transition to parenthood and her relationship with her child. The findings of a total of 6 studies will be discussed. First, this research found that the antenatal relationship between a mother and her foetus is best explained as a caregiving relationship rather than as an attachment relationship. Additionally, maternal relationships with partners were important factors in the women’s transition to motherhood – high relationship satisfaction and providing responsive care to partners 1 year after giving birth were significantly associated with lower parenting stress. Finally, a small longitudinal sample from the 3rd trimester of pregnancy until the children were 1 year old is presented. Overall, these results indicate that the development of the caregiving behavioural system merits further study, as it does seem to be related to antenatal relationships, which may impact infant attachment security.

Résumé :
In an attempt to promote the psychological well-being of new parents during he transition to parenthood, the "Promoting Parenthood Project" was established in Ayrshire and Arran, Scotland. Models of Anticipatory Guidance (defined by three inter-related activities including the provision of factual information, the anticipation of common psychological reactions to pregnancy, birth and early parenting and the mobilisation of coping resources) were examined in a comparative outcome study based within the context of existing local NHS ante-natal education provision. Significant differences were observed among the entire sample over time which supported earlier findings reported in the transition to parenthood literature. Specifically, findings corroborated earlier evidence suggesting that new parents experience a statistically significant decline in relationship satisfaction (as defined in this study by decreasing affectional expression) and that maximal relationship dissatisfaction appears to occur within the first three post-natal months. Interestingly, although gender differences were observed on measures of individual psychological well-being, relationship-based gender differences (with women experiencing significantly greater relationship dissatisfaction/greater dissatisfaction with partner's instrumental role performance than men) were not observed. Reasons for the findings obtained in the study were explored and future research options were discussed. The study raised substantive issues for future transition to parenthood research (including issues in changing cultural understandings of gender and parenthood), mental health promotion theory (including issues in the role of mental health promotion in the context of normative life-events) and practice-based issues for Midwifery and Clinical Psychology in the current NHS. Each of these issues was considered in detail.

Résumé :
Factors influencing adjustments in the transition to parenthood are identified and strategies for support in Britain and the USA are reviewed through participant-observation of 20 USA programmes (N=94 parents). A longitudinal British study, using a wide range of self report measures and in-depth interviews at three time points (1) examined key features of the transition to parenthood for a low risk sample of women (N=106) and men (N=106), and compared adjustments of 52 couples who participated in a new support programme with 54 couples who did not. The programme combined a group-based and home visit model which either began in pregnancy and continued postnatally, or began postnatally. The programme focused on the psychological dimensions of the transition to parenthood, with the intersubjectivity of the couple and parent-infant relationship at the core of the integrative model. Evidence is provided that the transition to parenthood is more complex than previous studies assume. A substantial number of the "low risk" women and men appeared to experience psychological distress and the main concern of women and men were different from the agenda of hospital based antenatal classes. A number of gender differences were found but partners were the main source of support for women and men. Women and men in the support group were comfortable to disclose explicit details about their experiences. At 6 months postnatally, their adjustments were more positive than women and men on the control for aspects of (a) confidence as a parent; (b) satisfaction with the couple relationship ; (c) satisfaction with the parent-infant relationship; (d) coping strategies, and (e) separation anxiety. Implications for theory, research and practice are discussed.

Résumé :
Since the publication of images of Iranian students' raised angry fists storming the American embassy in 1979, the idea of Iranian youth has captured the world's imagination and has been a source of puzzlement. The children of the Iranian revolution are today old enough to have their own children. Thus, one unique and original window from which to study Iranian youth is to investigate as they undergo the significant transition from youth to parenthood. This study will be in conversation with three expecting Montreal-based Iranian couples who fall in the cohort known as "the fruit of Iran's revolution;" in other words, youth that have lived entirely under the post revolutionary regime. I will examine parenting as an imagined projection and investigate ways in which my interlocutors envision their life as a first time parent.

Under the modern sociocultural reality, parenthood is highly prioritised among the issues of education of children and their integration into the social space. The positioning of parenthood in the framework of public discourse suggests a so-called ‘parenthood turn’ where parenthood is the key to understanding and addressing the widest range of issues related to the social identity of personality. The purpose of this article is to examine the main parenthood implementation patterns existing in the space of contemporary culture, and to research into publicity and privacy in the context of each of the concerned patterns. The methodological basis of the study is represented by systemic, ethno-psychological, and phenomenological approaches allowing us to analyse the parenthood phenomenon in terms of super-individual and subjective-personal determination, and to highlight discursive parenthood patterns implementable within the space of contemporary culture. The article covers such concepts as ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ parenthood. The main markers characterising these concepts have been presented. The mobility of the modern sociocultural reality, the transparency of national and cultural boundaries sets a number of prerequisites that change the sociocultural perception of parenthood. As transmittable within the framework of public discourse, these prerequisites at the level of personal choice are implementable throughout the range of possible patterns of parenthood. The diversity and variability of the parenthood experience implementation implies the extension of boundaries of parenthood normativity in culture. That said, the normativity criteria shall be set up both on the basis of external social-demographic, economical, and other prerequisites, and much more on the maturity of inner attitudes of the parent understanding and accepting the permanency of the parenthood experience, and taking on the responsibility for the freedom assumed under this permanency.

Résumé :
In 2022, the European Commission (EC) published the Proposal for a Council Regulation on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition of decisions, and acceptance of authentic instruments in matters of parenthood and on the creation of a European Certificate of Parenthood. Its main objective is to ensure that same-sex couples receive recognition of parenthood. The article offers a concise critical overview of the two aspects of this Proposal – jurisdictional and conflict-of-laws rules. In particular, the author observes that the Proposal suffers from the mismatch between its particular focus on rainbow families and a much broader scope. While its rules are advantageous for surrogacy arrangements and rainbow families, the authors of the Proposal have seemingly forgotten that according to its scope, the Proposal covers certain forms of adoption and paternity disputes that may arise years after the child’s birth. Jurisdictional rules and conflict-of-laws rules found in the Proposal are less suitable for these types of “parenthood matters”. Nonetheless, overall, even if these technical deficiencies were to be solved, the Proposal’s future seems grim as it takes a definitive stance on the divisive issues of same-sex parenthood and surrogacy arrangements.

Résumé :
The report considers the difficulties of adaptation to parenthood in the post-natal period. It dicusses current conditions and problems parents experience after childbirth. The main factors of disadaptation to parenthood are highlighted: a lack of readiness for a real life situation, lack of motivation, parental incompetence. The report defines the area of psychological assistance in the post-natal period. Psychology of parenthood is a modern trend of psychological science and practice, focused on psychological assistance to adults at different stages of parenthood: children's birth planning, preparation for pregnancy and childbirth, pregnancy, childbirth, adaptation to parenthood after childbirth, all subsequent stages of growing and upbringing children. In Russian psychology, parenthood is considered as activity (PA – parental activity), which has all the components of the structure of activities: motivational, executive, psychological readiness to activities, conditions of activities, actors (parents), an object of actions (a child), and others. д.

Résumé :
Background: The shift in women’s fertility and birth rate to the higher age is characterized as the most significant feature of reproductive behaviour over the past decades in the Czech Republic (and in other developed countries). The trend of the so-called delayed or late pregnancy/motherhood/parenthood is determined by polyfactorial influences with possible risk impacts on the biomedical and psychosocial aspects of the health of mothers, fathers, children and society as such. In 2020, the following project was implemented: 50/2020/PPZ/OKD In Time – responsible, erudite, planned and prepared parenthood – The shaping and development of health literacy in the area of reproductive health among young adults (university students). The project was supported by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and the Faculty of Education, Palacký University Olomouc. The outcomes of the project are of both educational and research nature. Method(s): The Research on the cognitive and affective dimensions of young adults in the area of early pregnancy/parenthood involving a sample of 844 student respondents from 14 universities in the Czech Republic evaluated the level of knowledge of health literacy with an emphasis on the general area of sexual and reproductive health as well as the specific area of possible risks associated with delayed/late pregnancy/parenthood. The research also focused on the personality and attitude dimensions of young adults in the context of delayed and late pregnancy. Results: In a specific area of sexual and reproductive health, the level of knowledge was problematic, sometimes even insufficient. An alarming fact is the complete lack of knowledge concerning the probability of conception during a single ovulation cycle of a young woman (18–30 years). Surprisingly, the correct answer was identified by less than 2% of female university students. The complete set of results of the research is published in the monograph In Time: The cognitive and affective dimensions of young adults in relation to pregnancy and parenthood. Conclusions: The unfavourable level of health literacy concerning early pregnancy/parenthood may have a negative effect on the affective and behavioural dimension of young adults and support the 63 manifestations of possible bio-psycho-social risks and complications resulting from the trends of shifting motherhood/parenthood to higher age bands. It is thus necessary to educate the young generation by means of adequate didactic procedures in order for them to be able to make informed decisions about whether and when to have a child.

Résumé :
Lone parent families are consistently identified among those most at risk of poverty and deprivation in Irish society, which causes the members of these families short- and long-term harm. In this study we draw on the Growing Up in Ireland study (GUI) 08 Cohort, using four waves of data from 2008 to 2017, when the study child was aged 9 months to 9 years. We examine the relationship between family trajectories, economic vulnerability and employment among lone parent households. The aim is to understand the contexts and social factors that lead to the association between lone parenthood and economic vulnerability.

Résumé :
Reliable and affordable non-parental childcare is intimately related to female participation and other outcomes in the labor market given the conflicting demand for women's time on both, work and care activities. In terms of policy, public provision and subsidy of childcare services lift some of the time constraints and contribute to help families in the transitions through the initial years of parenthood. Both enrollment and this in turn increases the probability for mothers to look for a job or to be employed. This paper summarizes the available evidence specifically discussing characteristics and impact of childcare policies and programs in the Latin American region. Almost all random assignment and quasi-experimental studies show consistent positive effects on the intensive or extensive margins of female labor supply. This document also provides a review of incipient evidence about factors that affect program take-up and demand for childcare services and other informal care arrangements.

Résumé :
The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) is one of the most active nongovernmental organizations delivering reproductive health (RH) services in Ghana, focusing particularly on youth issues and services. USAID suggested to the Population Council’s Africa OR/TA Project II staff that PPAG might benefit from technical assistance. A large and well-funded IPPF program to promote sexual health among youth of the Volta Region offered a good opportunity to begin OR work. Earlier, the program was envisioned as a demonstration educational program of five years duration. Further discussions suggested that this program was unlikely to be duplicated anywhere, because of its high cost and because the design of the evaluation did not include a comparison area. As a result, even if the surveys documented change in the program it would be unclear how much change resulted from program activities and how much resulted from other, nonprogram factors. It was PPAG’s assessment that IPPF would appreciate an OR approach more than a demonstration approach to sexual health issues for youth. Therefore, as detailed in this report, Africa OR/TA Project II and PPAG developed a project to strengthen PPAG’s research capacity.
