Résumé :
This paper builds on Roettger and Williams’ extensions of the primordial Lucas sequence to consider some relations among difference equations of different orders. This paper utilises some of their second and third order recurrence relations to provide an excursion through basic second order sequences and related third order recurrence relations with a variety of numerical illustrations which demonstrate that mathematical notation is a tool of thought.

Résumé :
I will argue that – as an exception to the general rule adopted in England and Wales – third parties, including victims, should in some circumstances be permitted to bring proceedings for (inter alia) judicial review of sentences, and other measures, imposed on offenders. Such proceedings should not be ruled out when parts of sentences, or other orders, are meant to affect the interests of individual third parties themselves, and the prosecution cannot reasonably be expected to be solely responsible for protecting those interests. However, I will also conclude that, from a public law perspective, there is a preferable solution. Third parties who may be adversely affected by sentences or orders imposed on offenders should sometimes be given a limited degree of involvement in the process leading up to the imposition of those sentences or orders. Recent legislation takes us some way towards this goal.

Résumé :
Citrus fibrous roots are vital for absorption and transport of water, nutrients, and other endogenous plant growth regulators. Efficient functioning of these roots in Huanglongbing (HLB)-affected citrus trees is important for their survival. One-year-old ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) trees on Swingle citrumelo were budded with HLB-infected budwood to determine the HLB-induced pathological responses at the ultrastructural level of different fibrous root orders. The fibrous root mass was dissected into four root orders: fourth-order (attached to a thick rudimentary taproot), third-order (attached to the fourth-order root), and second-order roots (attached to the third-order root). We were not able to study the ultrastructure of the first-order (attached to the second-order root) roots in this study. Severe loss in fibrous root mass was observed within 1 year following HLB infection. All root orders displayed various degrees of HLB symptoms. The fourth-order roots comprised normal phloem and disintegrated phloem. Some vascular bundles had completely disintegrated phloem tissue, whereas others showed normal ultrastructure. The fourth-order roots were also deficient in starch granules compared with controls. The pattern of phloem disintegration was similar in the third- and second-order roots. A thick layer of necrotic phloem developed near cortical cells, while the rest of the phloem structure remained normal in the third- and second-order roots. Cortical cells of both third and second orders were enriched with starch granules; therefore, soluble carbohydrates are most likely not the limiting factor for root decline in these root orders. The xylem anatomy displayed heptarch to pentarch morphology in the various root orders. These observations confirmed that various root orders in the fibrous root system are distinct and exhibit varied pathological responses during HLB pathogenesis. We propose that photosynthates deprived fourth-order roots in conjunction with necrotic phloem promoted decline in all root orders and impaired the translocation process to aboveground plant parts.

Résumé :
We present a rapidly convergent method for solving cubic polynomial equations with real coefficients. The method is based on a power series expansion of a simplified form of Cardano’s formula using Newton’s generalized binomial theorem. Unlike Cardano’s formula and semi-analytical iterative root finders, the method is free from round-off error amplification when the polynomial coefficients differ by several orders of magnitude or when they do not differ much from each other, but are all large or small by many orders of magnitude. Validation of the method is assessed by casting a cubic equation of state as a polynomial in terms of the compressibility factor and the reduced molar volume for propylene at temperature and pressure conditions where Cardano’s formula and iterative root finders fail.

Résumé :
In this paper, we derive the numerical solutions of the various fractional-order Riccati type differential equations using the third-kind Chebyshev wavelet operational matrix of fractional order integration (C3WOMFI) method. The operational matrix of fractional order integration method converts the fractional differential equations to a system of algebraic equations. The third-kind Chebyshev wavelet method provides sparse coefficient matrices, therefore the computational load involved for this method is not as severe and also the resulting method is faster. The numerical solutions agree with the exact solutions for non-fractional orders, and also the solutions for the fractional orders approach those of the integer orders as the fractional order coefficient [Formula: see text] approaches to 1.

Résumé :
Mitochondrial (mt) genomes are the largest molecular data source for deep level insect phylogenetics that is also obtainable in a reasonable timeframe and for a reasonable cost. Over 100 insect mt genomes have been sequenced, representing 29 of the 30 orders, multiple suborders for a third of the orders, and many representatives of the mega-diverse orders. Genome rearrangements have been found in a third of the insect orders however these rearrangements diagnose groups of ordinal or lower rank. Sequence based phylogenetic hypotheses utilizing mt genomic data are a promising source of data on interordinal relationships however these studies are hampered by base compositional biases, unequal rates of nucleotide substitution across groups and other long-branch effects. Available data from the field of insect mitogenomic phylogenetics is reviewed and future directions in this research outlined.

Résumé :
The paper highlights the role of communities of monks and nuns (the Third Orders) inthe structure and activity of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), which functionedunderground. It is emphasized that the historical roots of the Third Order are traced back to the13th century when spiritual life of specific lay communities was regulated by the Franciscan andthe Dominican Orders, and later, by the Carmelite Order. Between 1900 and 1930s lay communitiesof the UGCC became noticeably active. A characteristic example of their activity is the well knownRules for laypersons of the Basilian Order drawn by Metropolitan Archbishop Andrey Sheptytsky. In the 1970s (the Soviet time, when the UGCC worked underground), there appeared theRedemptorist and the Basilian Third Orders in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Their members kept insafety different cult objects, held underground Divine Services, meetings, had spiritual practices, did catechesis, etc. On the whole, these lay communities had played an important role in theUGCC underground activity up till the late 1980s

Résumé :
Intriguing and unusual physical properties of graphene offer remarkable potential for advanced, photonics-related technological applications, particularly in the area of nonlinear optics at the deep-subwavelength scale. In this study, we use a recently developed numerical method to illustrate an efficient mechanism that can lead to orders of magnitude enhancement of the third-harmonic generation in graphene diffraction gratings. In particular, we demonstrate that by taking advantage of the geometry dependence of the resonance wavelength of localized surface-plasmon polaritons of graphene ribbons and discs one can engineer the spectral response of graphene gratings so that strong plasmonic resonances exist at both the fundamental frequency and third-harmonic (TH). As a result of this double-resonant mechanism for optical near-field enhancement, the intensity of the TH can be increased by more than six orders of magnitude. Résumé :
Runge-Kutta methods are iterative methods for the approximation of solutions of ODE’s that were developed around 1900 by the German Mathematicians C. Runge (1856–1927) and M.W. Kutta (1867–1944). Runge-Kutta methods provide a popular way to solve the initial value problem for a system of ordinary differential equations and many Mathematicians have developed these methods in different ways. In this research work, we gave the overview of Runge-Kutta second and third orders in a simplified way and obtained new Runge-Kutta methods for these orders; our new schemes are better than the previous results obtained on the method.

Applications for security for costs raise fundamental principles of legal philosophy, with leading arbitrators being divided on whether such orders should be available in investor-State arbitration and, if so, in what circumstances. Security for costs has only ever been granted in three decisions, and in two of those decisions the tribunal has been firmly divided – a rarity for procedural orders. Unionmatex v. Turkmenistan marks the third such decision. This article summarizes the key findings in the case, outlines the framework for making such orders in International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) proceedings, summarizes the prior jurisprudence in this area, and concludes with a discussion of how the jurisprudence is likely to develop in the future. Résumé :
The crown of model trees growing in natural habitats is characterized. An attempt was made to identify more conservative and stable traits of crown axes of different orders. The dependence of the composition of shoots of second-order axes on their position in the first-order axis of the maternal growth is shown. The relationship between the lifetime of the axes and the time of their growth (aging) is revealed. Skeletal axes of the second order show similar pattern of changing the number of shoots from year to year, but differ in the length of their constituent shoots. The axes of the third, fourth and fifth orders determine individual differences of trees, by adjusting them to specific habitats. It was revealed that the change in the dominance of the fourth order over the third one in the crown reflects the regulation of the crown development under specific conditions and the rate of ontogeny. Acrotonia in the form of a stronger development of lateral shoots in the second and third positions from above on the mother shoot is characteristic of all branching orders. With an increase of the branching order, the manifestation of acrotonia is smoothed out. In this regard, the shoots of high orders become more and more similar to each other, which is particularly associated with the manifestation of the aging effect.

Résumé :
Common Fund Orders’ (CFOs) have had a significant effect on Australian third party-funded class actions by requiring all class members to make a contribution to the third-party litigation funder’s fee in the event of a successful outcome. This altered past practice whereby only class members who had contracted with the litigation funder would be liable for such a contribution. However in a 5:2 decision in BMW Australia Ltd v Brewster in 2019, the High Court cast some doubt on CFOs, determining that neither s 33ZF Federal Court of Australia Act 1976 (Cth) nor s 183 Civil Procedure Act 2005 (NSW) provided a legal basis for making CFOs at the outset of proceedings so as to secure litigation funding support. In late 2020, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Joint Committee (PJC) on Corporations and Financial Services recommended that legislation be enacted to ‘address uncertainty’ in Brewster in a manner that would enable CFOs to be made at settlement or judgment. The authors canvass normative arguments as to the merits of CFOs and compare the alternative practice of making Funding Equalisation Orders (FEOs). They also consider the related issue of courts setting overall funding commissions. Given the possibility of legislative intervention, they also review arguments as to the potential constitutional validity of CFOs, a matter that was raised, but received very limited treatment from the High Court in BMW.

Résumé :
e19161 Background: ChemoPalRx is a free iOS mobile application developed for chemotherapy referencing and prescribing. Providers can readily download and use ChemoPalRx to generate and print chemotherapy formatted prescriptions. In the absence of a computerized chemotherapy order entry system, institutions may adopt ChemoPalRx for chemotherapy prescribing in place of traditional methods such as handwritten prescriptions. However, effectiveness of ChemoPalRx in the real-world practices has not been established. Methods: With our aim to determine the effectiveness of ChemoPalRx, we conducted a cross sectional study at an academic institution. Our study primary predictor was the method of generating a chemotherapy order, dichotomized as “handwritten” or “ChemoPalRx”. Primary outcome was corrected order, dichotomized as “corrected” or “satisfactory” order. Corrections were defined as any correction made to an order (e.g. illegible handwriting, modifications in drug dosing, missing chemotherapy or patient’s information). Covariates included fellowship training year (first, second, or third) and complexity of order (“simple” = 2 drugs or less; “complex” = 3 drugs or more). Correction rate (CR) was defined as the proportion of corrected orders. Chi Square test was used for statistical analysis. Results: From October 2019 to December 2019, 288 chemotherapy orders were examined, of which, 226 were handwritten (78.5%) and 62 were ChemoPalRx (21.5%). Of the 226 handwritten orders, 184 (81%) were satisfactory, 42 (19%) were corrected. Of the 62 ChemoPalRx orders, 57 (92%) were satisfactory, 5 (8%) were corrected. CR was significantly reduced by ChemoPalRx compared to handwritten (p = 0.034). Subgroup analysis found that first-year fellows tend to make more corrections on complex orders (CR: 19%) compared to second- and third-year fellows (CR: 6%) (p = 0.19), while second- and third- year fellows made more corrections on simple orders (CR: 22%) compared to first-year fellows (CR: 9%) (p = 0.013). Conclusions: ChemoPalRx significantly enhanced prescription accuracy compared to handwritten chemotherapy orders. Implementation of ChemoPalRx in real-world practices is validly feasible and effective. While ChemoPalRx may support less experienced providers on more complex orders, it may help to catch overlooked simple details for the experienced providers. In the evolving digital era in oncology, ChemoPalRx may be a promising alternative to handwritten prescriptions that can be readily available at one’s fingertips.

Résumé :
The finite verb typically occurs in second position in main clauses in Germanic languages other than English. Hence they are often referred to as ʽverb-second languagesʼ or V2-languages for short. The difference between a V2-language and a non-V2 language is shown in (i)–(ii) with Icelandic examples and English glosses (the finite verb is highlighted): In example (i) the finite verb occurs in second position in Icelandic, immediately following the subject María in Icelandic but in the English gloss it occurs in third position, following the adverb never. In (ii) the finite verb immediately follows the fronted (topicalized) object Maríu in Icelandic but in the English gloss the finite verb again occurs in third position, this time following the subject. This article discusses the influence of intense language contact (English/Icelandic) on the two V2-order types in North American Icelandic (NAmIce), a heritage language spoken in former Icelandic conclaves in North America. We show that the subject-first V2-order is more robust in NAmIce than the topic-first V2-order and less vulnerable to English influence, although both types are affected to some extent. This is interesting for two reasons. First, it has been argued that word order is typically less prone to cross-linguistic influence than for instance morphology. Second, these results suggest that, contrary to common assumption, the two types of V2-orders discussed here may have different syntactic sources in Icelandic syntax.

SummaryCommunity treatment orders (CTOs) have been widely introduced to address the problems faced by ‘revolving door’ patients. A number of case–control studies have been conducted but show conflicting results concerning the effectiveness of CTOs. The Oxford Community Treatment Order Evaluation Trial (OCTET) is the third randomised controlled trial (RCT) to show that CTOs do not reduce rates of readmission over 12 months, despite restricting patients' autonomy. This evidence gives pause for thought about current CTO practice. Further high-quality RCTs may settle the contentious debate about effectiveness.

Résumé :
In this paper, I examine the intertwined science, politics, and religion of a major figure of nineteenth-century French biology, the Parisian professor of histology Charles Robin (1821–1885). Historiography generally associates his name with France’s rejection of the cell theory formulated by Schwann and then Virchow in the 1830s–1850s. One of the main factors put forward is the influence of Comtean positivism. Here, I propose to go beyond this historiography and discuss not only convergences but also divergences between Robin’s and Comte’s visions of the organism and society. Moreover, I analyze Robin’s research agenda in light of the political ideas he defended as a republican in the context of the emergence of the Third Republic. At first sight, Robin’s political activity (marked by his late tenure as senator) may initially appear disconnected from his scientific agenda. However, I argue that Robin’s approaches to different areas of knowledge (biology, sociology, politics, and metaphysics) were mutually supportive and lent one another authority, especially through the parallel structure and shared vocabulary of their discourses. Ultimately, I demonstrate that Robin’s biological materialism, combined with his outspoken anticlericalism, constitutes a political stance, and show how the concept of “solidarity” helped him to cast a new light on the relations between the parts and the whole, both in biology and social policy. This essay is part of a special issue entitled REVOLUTIONARY POLITICS AND BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY FRANCE AND GERMANY edited by Lynn K. Nyhart and Florence Vienne.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the opportunity for third-party logistics providers (3PLs) to develop further value-added services for their clients, focused on purchasing. The provider perspectives on third-party purchase (3PP) services are examined in conjunction with their business environment, with a survey informed by transaction cost economics. Design/methodology/approach New Zealand 3PL providers were surveyed, and 166 responses were received. Structural equation modeling was used to test the conceptual model. Findings From the perspective of 3PL providers, uncertainty, frequency and transaction size, but not asset specificity, are significantly associated with client value from a 3PP service. While asset specificity in investments is not required by 3PLs, they need a high frequency of orders, sufficient order size and low levels of uncertainty as supporting conditions for the development of 3PP services. Research limitations/implications The sample focuses on 3PL providers and therefore does not address the behavioral characteristics of users or customers of the services. Originality/value This study shows that 3PP services may be further developed by 3PL providers to improve the value offered to their clients.

Résumé :
Abstract Third order women religious actively participated in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian society. Scholars have argued that the introduction of monastic enclosure for all women religious after the Council of Trent crushed non-enclosed forms of female monasticism in Italy and Europe. The study of third orders reveals, however, that non-enclosed monastic communities survived the Tridentine reforms and met specific social needs in the early modern society. Third order women religious provided education, care, and companionship to women of all ages and socioeconomic ranks. They thus filled a gap left by other monastic and custodial institutions. Ecclesiastical and secular authorities as well as neighbors considered women’s third orders an asset to local communities. Résumé :
Previous studies in this laboratory have shown that autoregulation of blood flow and dilation of midsized (second-order) arterioles were significantly enhanced during sympathetic nerve stimulation of cat sartorius muscle apparently because of a greater myogenic response of the arterioles. Quite typically, blood flow increased with arterial pressure reduction to 80, 60, and 40 mmHg (superregulation) during sympathetic nerve stimulation. To determine the contribution of the various orders of arterioles to the enhanced autoregulation, we measured diameters in all orders of arterioles and measured red cell velocity in first-, second-, and third-order arterioles. Without sympathetic nerve stimulation, all orders of arterioles except the first order dilated to pressure reduction, but flow autoregulation was weak. With sympathetic nerve stimulation, arteriolar dilation to pressure reduction was significantly enhanced in all six orders of arterioles, and flow rose significantly. The resistance change in the arteriolar network during pressure reduction as calculated from diameter changes was greatest in third- and fourth-order arterioles. Experimentally determined flow changes to pressure reduction and to sympathetic nerve stimulation were quantitatively similar to those predicted from diameter changes in a model of the arteriolar network. Calculated wall shear stress (from viscosity and shear rate) for first-, second-, and third-order arterioles decreased during pressure reduction with and without sympathetic nerve stimulation. We concluded that endothelium-mediated dilation due to shear stress would tend to oppose autoregulation of blood flow to a similar degree under both circumstances.

Abstract. This article explores the role of the EU as a global actor in international relations and a promoter of its own standards and values abroad. In particular, this article studies selected substantive and procedural means of exporting the acquis communautaire into the legal systems of third countries. It is argued that the substantive means refer to the fundamental ways of implementing the acquis into third country legal orders. The procedural means relate to specific technical/procedural tools which either directly or indirectly encourage the implementation of the acquis into third country legal orders. The article concludes that these substantive and procedural means are not uniformly applicable, but are rather exercised in accordance with the specific objectives of EU external agreements. Analysis of the selected EU external agreements illustrates that their objectives unquestionably constitute a driving force behind understanding the role and mechanism of the substantive and procedural means of exporting the acquis communautaire.

Third-harmonic generation (THG) and its origin are investigated in an anharmonic quantum well by the perturbation theory. The calculated results show that the nonlinear effect roots in an anharmonic oscillation of electrons deviate asymmetrically or symmetrically from an ideal harmonic oscillation, and the more the deviation is, the larger the nonlinearities will be. In addition, the nonlinear coefficient is also relative to the anharmonic-oscillation frequency in the model. The most important point is that the THG coefficient may be obtained over 10-10 (m/V)2, about ten orders of magnitude greater than those in bulk GaAs.

Résumé :
Abstract This corpus study investigates well-known violations of the verb second constraint in Old High German main clauses. Starting from the observation that the attested orders are overwhelmingly ambiguous regarding the position of the verb and the preverbal constituents, the paper applies methods for identifying diagnostic datasets which can be clearly distinguished in terms of structure and use. Two types of diagnostic non-verb-second orders are tested, namely verb-final clauses in which no verb movement applies, and verb-third clauses in which the verb as well as all preverbal categories occupy specified positions in the left periphery of the clause. The result is that diagnostic evidence for any of the datasets is sparse in native prose, and that especially diagnostic verb-third orders are not sufficiently distinguishable against their Latin originals. In addition, both diagnostic patterns interfere in use, suggesting that they represent less clearly differentiated, unproductive patterns, used for special stylistic purposes.

Commelina caroliniana Walter is an andromonoecious rainy-season weed. It bears staminate and hermaphrodite flowers in spathes. In some spathes, structurally hermaphrodite flowers of the third and fourth orders function either as male or female. The flowers are structured for cross-pollination. Events of floral biology suggest weak protandry which also contributes to cross-pollination. Large numbers of hymenopterans (nine species) visited the flowers and transferred pollen to stigmas. Whenever cross-pollination failed, selfing took over. Auto-fertility and self-compatibility indices revealed that the plants were self-compatible. Only some flowers of the third and fourth orders within a spathe were partially self-compatible. These facts notwithstanding, manual cross-pollination of flowers yields increased fruit and seed set.

AbstractIn this paper I will communicate some new consequences of the Proper Forcing Axiom. First, the Bounded Proper Forcing Axiom implies that there is a well ordering of ℝ which is Σ1-definable in (H(ω2), ϵ). Second, the Proper Forcing Axiom implies that the class of uncountable linear orders has a five element basis. The elements are X, ω1, , C, C * where X is any suborder of the reals of size ω1 and C is any Countryman line. Third, the Proper Forcing Axiom implies the Singular Cardinals Hypothesis at k unless stationary subsets of reflect. The techniques are expected to be applicable to other open problems concerning the theory ofH(ω2).

The diffraction of regular waves by a vertical circular cylinder in finite depth water is considered, within the frame of potential theory. The wave slope kA is assumed to be small so that successive boundary value problems at orders kA, k2A2, and k3A3 can be formulated. Here we focus on the third-order (k3A3) problem but restrict ourselves to the triple-frequency component of the diffraction potential. The method of resolution is based on eigenfunction expansions and on the integral equation technique with the classical Green function expressed in cylindrical coordinates. Third-order (triple-frequency) loads are calculated and compared with experimental measurements and approximate methods based on long-wave theories.

Résumé :
Abstract The Immigration Act 2014, the UK statutory law governing deportation, requires deportation as the normal consequence of criminal offending by a foreign national. Deportation is a binary institution; a foreign national offender (FNO) is made subject to a deportation order and deported from the UK, or they are not. This is problematic because it creates two kinds of ‘hard cases’ on either side of the statutory categories for exemption from deportation on the basis of an FNO’s article 8 ECHR family life. This article proposes the introduction of a ‘suspended deportation order’ so as to create a third possible disposal for deportation appeals as a means by which to tackle the problems arising from the binary outcomes to deportation appeals. The article examines suspended prison sentences as a model for the rationale and practical application of a ‘suspended deportation order’, noting both similarities and differences to this fixture of sentencing law.

AbstractObjectives:To determine the frequency with which physician, on-line medical direction (OLMD) [direct medical control] of prehospital care results in orders, to describe the nature of these orders, and to measure OLMD time intervals. Methods:Blinded, prospective study.Setting:A university hospital base-station resource center.Participants:Ten emergency physicians, 50 advanced life support providers.Interventions:Prehospital treatment was directed by both standing orders and OLMD physician orders. Independent observers recorded event times and the characteristics of OLMD.Results:Physician orders were given in 47 (19%) of the 245 study cases, and covered a variety of interventions, including many already authorized by standing orders. Mean OLMD radio time was four minutes (245 ± 216 seconds [sec]), and time from beginning of OLMD to hospital arrival averaged 12 minutes (718 ± 439 sec). Mean transport time in this system was 13 minutes. Conclusion:Despite detailed standing orders, OLMD results in orders for clinical interventions in 19% of cases. On-line medical direction requires about four minutes of physician time per call. This constituted about one-third of the potential field treatment time interval in this system. Thus, OLMD appears to play an important role in providing quality prehospital care.

Résumé :
High-brightness X-ray radiation produced by third-generation synchrotron light sources (TGLS) has been used for numerous time-resolved investigations in many different scientific fields. The typical time duration of X-ray pulses delivered by these large-scale machines is about 50–100 ps. A growing number of time-resolved studies would benefit from X-ray pulses with two or three orders of magnitude shorter duration. Here, techniques explored in the past for shorter X-ray pulse emission at TGLS are reviewed and the perspective towards the realisation of picosecond and sub-picosecond X-ray pulses are discussed.

Résumé :
The selfconsistent high-density expansion for thermodynamic quantities of the quantum spin-polarized fermion lattice gas, derived in the preceding paper, is extended to higher orders. The (1/z)2 terms in the free energy are evaluated by summing two-loop diagrams and the corresponding equation for critical temperature in the classical limit is discussed. Ground state phase diagram of the system for arbitrary electron density is derived in the first and second order of the expansion. Properties of the half-filled, one-dimensional spinless fermion model at T = 0, obtained here in the first three orders in 1/z, are compared with the results of exact calculations and of other approximate methods. This provides a test for the unrenormalized high-density expansion method.

Résumé :
Fine roots play important roles in the allocation of forest net primary productivity. Here, to provide insights into the intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting the root growth, we examined the morphology and longevity of different-order fine roots in two poplar (Populus × euramericana (Dode) Guinier) plantations with contrasting forest productivities. The results indicated that the biomass of fine roots decreased significantly as the root orders increased (P < 0.05). In the plantation with relatively high productivity, the specific root length of the first- and second-order roots was significantly greater than that of the third- to fifth-order roots (P < 0.05). Observations of minirhizotrons showed that roots of the third-order and higher lived longer than the first- and second-order roots. Compared with those in the plantation with relatively low productivity, the cumulative survival rate of the first-order roots was significantly higher in the plantation with relatively high productivity, while that of the third-order or higher roots was lower. The life-span of the first-order roots correlated negatively with soil available inorganic nitrogen, while that of the second-order roots correlated positively with the soil phenolic acid content. A Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that soil conditions, root orders, season of root birth, and soil depth significantly affected fine-root longevity. These findings suggest that roots of different orders contribute unequally to the poplar plantation productivity.

Abstract Recently, identification systems that use human biometric characteristics in solving the problem of access to information systems are becoming more common. The paper proposes a new method of biometric identification of users of computer systems based on the definition of integral Volterra models of the human oculomotor system (OMS) according to experimental research “input-output” using innovative technology of eye tracking. Developed in the Python IDLE programming environment software to identify OMS. Experimental studies of the OMS of two individuals were performed. Based on the data obtained using the TOBII PRO TX300 eye tracker, the transient functions of the first, second and third orders of the OMS are determined. There is a significant difference in the diagonal intersections of the transition functions of the second and third orders of the two individuals.

Like other social animals, humans play adaptively important games, and current evolutionary theory predicts special-purpose, domain-specific cognitive mechanisms for playing such games. We offer a functional analysis of the information requirements for successfully playing one important social game, the “hawk-dove” conflict-of-interest game, developing new graphic conventions for doing so. In particular, we address the orders of recognition necessary for successfully playing such games, showing that there are adaptive advantages of capacities for first, second, third, and fourth such orders, but no more. We suggest that first-order recognition is not only the most basic in analytic terms but is likely to have been the first to evolve, with subsequent orders added later in evolution.
