Sino-French war of 1884–1885 on land and at sea was significant as the beginning of a new stage of active French colonial policy in the Far East. It was a continuation of the Second French-Vietnamese war of 1883–1886, more known as “Tonkin Campaign”. France wanted to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a protectorate there. Tonkin belonged to Chinese sphere of interest because of Hong (Red) river which connected China’s southern provinces with the sea as an important trade route. Additional research, intended to place this painterarchaeologist in historical context, showed that his situation was not unique and that, during the same period, in France well as elsewhere in Europe, there was a surge of interest in reproductions of objects and of archaeological sites. Abstract This article provides an in-depth study of two occultist journals published in France at the turn of the twentieth century, namely, La Voie and La Gnose. Although ultimately commercially unsuccessful, both journals proved to be very important in the development of the influential esotericist René Guénon (1886–1951). Through a detailed analysis of all issues, it is shown how both journals initiated their publication as house organs of a neo-Gnostic organisation (the Gnostic Church of France), but soon moved to “Eastern” themes such as East Asian religions or Islam. A puzzle in the sociolinguistic history of Sanskrit is that texts with authenticated dates first appear in the 2nd century CE, after five centuries of exclusively Prakrit inscriptions. Various hypotheses have tried to account for this fact. Senart (1886) proposed that Sanskrit gained wider currency through Buddhists and Jains. Franke (1902) claimed that Sanskrit died out in India and was artificially reintroduced. Lévi (1902) argued for usurpation of Sanskrit by the Kshatrapas, foreign rulers who employed brahmins in administrative positions. Pisani (1955) instead viewed the “Sanskrit Renaissa

Résumé :
It seems that everyone wants a piece of the African continent, reviving nightmares of a return to the 19th-century European colonisation of the ‘Dark Continent’. Fears of neo-colonialist expansion by European countries like France, emerging hegemonic contenders like Communist China and revivalist powers like Turkey may be premature or unfounded. The reasons are simple. Résumé :
There is a growing recognition that offshore structures fundamentally distort the world map of foreign direct investment (FDI). This paper advances efforts to map the ultimate owners hidden in official data behind offshore or ‘phantom’ FDI by using a novel methodology to deconstruct the ultimate origins of FDI in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Russia, India, and China. In contrast to previous studies, this methodology unpicks distortions created by the offshore re-domiciliation of corporate groups at the parent level, in addition to subsidiary level, by determining the ‘true’ ulti
