Résumé :
This article reviews that wheels riding along parallel tracks have to balance diameters by “hunting.” Hunting wears down both wheels and rails, because a wheel must move sideways to find balance. The wheels, much like a pup chasing the phantom tip of a cropped tail, seek an accord they can never reach. Auto manufacturers might say all that energy used to go toward metal forming of the unwanted variety. American freight lines carry heavier loads than their counterparts in Europe. In Europe, passenger rail exerts more influence over railroad infrastructure than it does in the United States. Abc-

Abstract We investigate the dynamics of a bicycle on an uneven mountain bike track split into straight sections with small jumps (kickers) and banked corners. A basic model of the interaction of bicycle and rider proposed and used to derive equations of motion, which capture the possibilities to accelerate the bicycle without pedaling. Since this is a first approach to the problem, only corners connected by straight lines are considered to compute optimal riding strategies. The simulation is validated with experimental data obtained on a real pump track. It is demonstrated that the model effec

Reactive multilayer nano-foils possess high heat release and combustion temperature, which makes them very attractive for advanced applications, such as materials joining materials, tuning ignition and actuation, energy microsources, and others. The combustion mechanism of CuO/Al foils has not been adequately described yet. In this work, we report experimental evidence of an amazing combustion mode in CuO/Al reactive multilayer nano-foils. A set of droplets of molten combustion products forms behind the reaction front and “rides” this front under the action of surface tension. When the combust

In general, compared to four-wheel vehicles even a small percentage of accidents that include motorcycles causes a significant rate of all fatalities in the Czech Republic. Two-wheelers nowadays face the challenge of electric propulsion and wider user adoption. This fact emphasizes the need to assess rider´s behaviour. The constant increase in traffic load at mining enterprises forces to look for ways to improve the quality of feeder roads of coal open pits. There is a constant search for tools and methods for improving road pave- ment to increase the service life of truck haul roads. It is known that haul roads are topped mostly with lightweight flexible pavements due to the pe- culiarities of moving vehicles. One of the most applicable materials for pav- ing truck haul roads is crushed stone sand mixtures. However, the lack of scientific research aimed at finding ways to improve the riding quality of open

Train–bridge dynamic interaction analysis is critical for the dynamic design of bridges and the safety and comfort assessment of trains. This study introduces a train–bridge dynamic model of a straddle monorail train and a steel–concrete composite track beam to investigate the dynamic performance of the bridge and train. It explores the influence of track irregularities and passenger loads on the dynamic response of train–bridge systems at various traveling speeds. The numerical results indicate that there is no significant resonance between the straddle monorail train and the steel–concrete c

The dynamic behavior and ride quality of railway vehicles are influenced by track quality. Monitoring riding comfort and safety is a major task of the Austrian Federal Railway’s Infrastructure Division. The track testing and recording car EM 250 provides a proven measuring instrument for modern track maintenance. Equipped with an inertial measuring system and an optical track gauge measuring system, the track testing and recording car can measure the track alignment and rail profiles at speeds of up to 220 km/h. Rail corrugation can cause intense dynamic interaction between train and track, which can reduce riding comfort and lifespan of track structure, and even threaten running safety. Instead of investigating the root cause and growth of corrugation, this case study aims to investigate possible solutions to the excess train–track dynamic interaction excited by rail corrugation in a metro track through both numerical analysis and field experiments. Numerical analysis was performed based on a vehicle–track coupled dynamical model with field-measured rail corrugation information from two curves. The n

When resources are spatially and temporally variable, consumers can increase their foraging success by moving to track ephemeral feeding opportunities as these shift across the landscape; the best examples derive from herbivore–plant systems, where grazers migrate to capitalize on the seasonal waves of vegetation growth. We evaluated whether analogous processes occur in watersheds supporting spawning sockeye salmon ( Oncorhynchus nerka ), asking whether seasonal activities of predators and scavengers shift spatial distributions to capitalize on asynchronous spawning among populations of salmon

Abstract Tropical cyclones (TCs) over the western North Pacific (WNP) are usually embedded in the multitime-scale summer monsoon circulation and occasionally experience sudden track changes, which are currently a challenge in TC forecasting. A composite analysis of 15 sudden north-turning cases and 14 west-turning cases that occurred during the period 2000–10 was conducted with a focus on influences of low-frequency monsoon circulations. It is found that TCs in the two specific categories of track changes are embedded in a monsoon gyre of about 2500 km in diameter on the quasi-biweekly oscilla

This paper reviews the approach adopted in overcoming rough riding on the Class 31 locomotives. It describes how the problem was defined, contains an explanation of the technical investigation, and resultant design modifications, on-track testing, and finally analysis of results, thus demonstrating achievement of a successful design solution. The paper describes how excessive hysteresis in the existing spring tended to degrade ride performance. The improvements in the ride have been achieved by reducing this friction level significantly, which has resulted in a corresponding reduction in ampli
