Résumé :
This paper summarizes recent developments in the theory of Bogomol'nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield (BPS) state counting and the wall crossing phenomena, emphasizing in particular the role of the statistical mechanical model of crystal melting. This paper is divided into two parts, which are closely related to each other. In the first part, we discuss the statistical mechanical model of crystal melting counting BPS states. Each of the BPS states contributing to the BPS index is in one-to-one correspondence with a configuration of a molten crystal, and the statistical partition function of the melting cr

Résumé :
AbstractThe moduli space of holomorphic maps from Riemann surfaces to the Grassmannian is known to have two kinds of compactifications: Kontsevich’s stable map compactification and Marian–Oprea–Pandharipande’s stable quotient compactification. Over a non-singular curve, the latter moduli space is Grothendieck’s Quot scheme. In this paper, we give the notion of ‘ ϵ-stable quotients’ for a positive real number ϵ, and show that stable maps and stable quotients are related by wall-crossing phenomena. We will also discuss Gromov–Witten type invariants associated to ϵ-stable quotients, and investiga

We present the scalar moduli stabilization from the perspective of the real intrinsic geometry. In this paper, we describe the physical nature of the vacuum moduli fluctuations of an arbitrary Fayet configuration. For finitely many Abelian scalar fields, we show that the framework of the real intrinsic geometry investigates the mixing between the marginal and threshold vacua. Interestingly, we find that the phenomena of wall crossing and the search of the stable vacuum configurations, pertaining to D-term and F-term scalar moduli, can be accomplished for the Abelian charges. We review free fermion, melting crystal, and matrix model representations of wall-crossing phenomena on local, toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. We consider both unrefined and refined BPS counting of closed BPS states involving D2- and D0-branes bound to a D6-brane, as well as open BPS states involving open D2-branes ending on an additional D4-brane. Appropriate limit of these constructions provides, among the others, matrix model representation of refined and unrefined topological string amplitudes.

The trajectory and reach of jets issuing from tangential control ports at the periphery of a vortex amplifier's swirl chamber depend largely on design geometry, size and pressures applied. Excessive control port pressure causes these jets to extend too far across the face of the radial supply ports, to impact on the opposing supply port wall whereupon, they bifurcate to create back diffusion of control port flow along the supply port channels. Flow through vortex amplifier geometry is simulated using a baseline Reynolds stress turbulence model with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFX) automatic

Résumé :
Potential earthquake-induced damage to overlapped tunnels probably occurs during the operation and maintenance of mountain tunnel engineering, especially in the seismically active zone. This study investigated the dynamic response and the failure characteristics of the parallel overlapped tunnel under seismic loadings by employing shaking table tests. The failure mode of the parallel overlapped tunnels was analyzed through macroscopic test phenomena. The dynamic responses of the surrounding rock and tunnel lining were evaluated by acceleration and dynamic strain, respectively. In particular, w

The three-dimensional (3D) interactions between crossing shock waves and a turbulent boundary layer (CSWBLI) inside a symmetric double fin are experimentally studied using nanoparticle-based planar laser scattering, supersonic particle image velocimetry, and surface oil visualization. The possibility of controlling the separated flow generated by CSWBLI is considered by employing micro-ramp vortex generators. First, the fractal dimension, velocity profile, and logarithmic law of the incoming turbulent boundary layer at Mach number 2.8 are examined. Then, the flow structure and velocity distrib

We study the twisted index of 3d \mathcal{N}=2𝒩=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on S^1 \times \SigmaS1×Σ in the presence of a real FI parameter deformation. This parameter induces a 1d FI parameter for the effective supersymmetric quantum mechanics on S^1S1. Using supersymmetric localisation, the twisted index can be expressed as a contour integral. We show that the contour prescription is modified in the presence of the 1d FI parameter, leading to wall-crossing phenomena for the twisted index. In particular, we derive a general wall-crossing formula for abelian gauge theories. We also examine

In part 1, we study the space of stability conditions on a Calabi-Yau-N category associated to an affine type A-quiver. Bridgeland introduced the notion of stability conditions on a triangulated category which consists of a group homomorphism from Grothendieck group to complex number and a family of full additive subcategories of semistable objects of phase satisfying certain axioms. Résumé :
The understanding of physical phenomena such as flow behaviour and mass transfer performance is needed in order to develop appropriate micromixers for industrial or biomedical applications. In this work, CFD is used to characterize the flow and the liquid mixing quality in a micromixer as a function of the Reynolds number. Two micromixers are studied in steady flow conditions; they are based on two geometries, respectively T-shaped (⊤) and cross-type (+). Simulations allow, in the case of ⊤ micromixers, to chart the topology of the flow and to describe the evolution of species concentration do

We present in this paper an experimental and numerical study about the Coanda effect which causes the sudden reattachment of a jet to an inclined plane. This phenomenon induces a large hysteresis loop, which can be used to reduce the noise produced by an airflow crossing two diaphragms in tandem inside a duct. The angle of the inclined wall with horizontal plane and the flow velocity are the two main parameters studied here. With the aim of doing optimal control, we propose to construct for this flow configuration a low-dimensional dynamical system with a basis issued from a Proper Orthogonal

Abstract This paper continues previous research by the current authors in a series of papers describing the impact of multi-row interaction on the forced response behavior of embedded compressor rotors. Specifically, this work dives into an aspect of the embedded rotor forcing that has been sparsely addressed in literature — the impact of an asymmetry in the upstream stator on the forcing function and blade vibration. Although the concept of introducing an asymmetry was introduced nearly 50 years ago, no papers in literature talk about the impact of multi-row interaction with an upstream asymm

Abstract Vibrations induced by fast varying thermal gradients were first investigated by Boley in the Fifties with respect to the case of beams operating in extra-atmospheric microgravity environment. Indeed, spacecrafts and orbiting satellites crossing from the Earth’s shadow into sunlight experience rapid changes in the thermal loading due to the solar radiation. Such loading is responsible of time dependent bending moments and transverse shear forces on appendages and booms. Those are typically lightweight structures having high flexibility with low frequency and damping characteristic. The

Résumé :
The construction of a pipeline in mountainous terrain often exposes great challenges compared to that on flat land. To accommodate the terrain and resultantly complex route, the pipeline design must incorporate a large quantity of cold bends and elbow fittings. A recently constructed project provides a prime example of a pipeline crossing such terrain. The challenging construction conditions and the bends and elbows make the assessment of stress impacting long-term pipeline integrity critical, yet difficult. This paper focuses on three specific aspects of long-term integrity for construction i
