In 2004, Tennessee failed to receive the national attention it enjoyed in the three prior presidential elections. In l992, the governor of neighboring Arkansas, Bill Clinton, selected Tennessee’s popular Senator Al Gore as his vice presidential running mate, and together they successfully challenged President George H.W. Bush. Clinton won Tennessee’s electoral votes, but captured only a 47 percent plurality of the popular vote in the three-way race; Bush received 42 percent of Tennessee’s votes, while independent Ross Perot took the balance. Four years later, the Clinton-Gore ticket won reelec

Rome after the Second World War presented something of an anomaly. Of all the traditional capitals of European civilization it was the least affected by the conflict. Because of the Pope's presence, it had not been bombed, and it had escaped the heavy fighting in the campaigns to the south. Indeed, so easily was it taken that one film was to show the Eternal City captured by a single jeep. Italy was also faster to recover than any of the other combatants. American money flooded into the country, and political life was quickly under way again. All this made it a good place for visitors, a relat

After white landowners evicted black sharecroppers in late 1960 for registering to vote, activists in Fayette and Haywood Counties organized ‘Tent Cities' in a bid to focus national media attention on their plight. Over the decade, it developed into a wide-reaching campaign for desegregation in public accommodations and education, welfare reform, voting rights, and sustained community improvement measures. This little-known episode significantly advances scholarly understanding of rural civil rights activism. Notably this story reveals complex dualities including: a local grassroots movement b

This paper’s purpose is to give a brief overview of the legal issues, identify practical issues and dangers associated with restrictive abortion laws, and contextualize preemption in the current political moment. The topic here is medical emergency – this paper does not address abortion for either nonmedical or nonemergency reasons. Lastly, this paper is designed to appeal to those in many dis

Abstract By the late 1830s, Squatter Democracy, in style and substance, had become a dominant strain in American politics. Whigs began appropriating the trappings of their rivals’ signature brand, first by stoking the legend of one of their own—a brash congressman from western Tennessee named David Crockett—and then by waging a “log cabin and hard cider” campaign in 1840 that landed western war hero William Henry Harrison in the White House. Whigs then played a leading role in passing the landmark Preemption Act of 1841, which legalized squatting on a mass scale. Meanwhile, the emergence of so
