Résumé :
Abstract Goat breeding is a traditional livestock industry for many regions of Russia. Due to unpretentiousness and high adaptive qualities, the Karachai, Dagestan wool and Dagestan down breeds are widespread in the North Caucasus. Moreover, their uniqueness is determined by sharing a common habitat with their wild relatives, West Caucasian and Dagestani turs, thus forming hybrid zones. The aim of the research was to study allele pool and interbreed differentiation of domestic goat breeds and wild relatives by microsatellites. Research was performed based on 16 loci on the ABI 3130xl analyzer. Population genetic characteristics were calculated in GenAlEx 6.5, and the phylogenetic tree was constructed in Populations 1.2.30 and SplitsTree 4.14.5. The sample collection included goat breeds (n = 226): Karachai (KRCH), Dagestan down (DAGD), Dagestan wool (DAGW) (North Caucasus), Soviet wool (SOVW) (Siberia), Orenburg (OREN) (South Ural), and wild goats (n = 72). Wild goats comprised mountain goats: Siberian goats (Capra sibirica) from the Altai, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and the Himalayas; bezoar goats (Capra aegagrus) from Turkey and Pakistan; and tur (Capra caucasica) from the West Caucasus (Kuban), Central Caucasus, and East Caucasus (Dagestan). The Karachai breed was characterized by the highest level of genetic diversity: the average number of alleles per locus (NA) and allelic richness (AR) were 9,154 and 7,713, respectively, while these indices varied from 6,538 to 7,538 and from 6,425 to 7,538 (Table 1) in other breeds, respectively. The values of genetic distances showed differentiation of Karachai, Dagestan down and Dagestan wool breeds from Orenburg and Soviet wool breeds (Table 2). The formation of three clusters was established. The first one included subspecies of the Caucasian tur, the second one comprised Siberian goats, and the third contained domestic goats. Bezoar goats were in the root of the third cluster that confirmed their participation as an ancestral form of domestic goats.

Résumé :
A remotely fired net-gun was used at a waterhole for capturing wild goats and urial in an area where helicopters could not be used. Twenty-six goats and eight urial were caught, with a capture effort of 12.5 person-hours per goat, and 59.5 person-hours per urial. Up to four animals were caught at once, multiple captures accounting for 74% of all captures for both species. A remotely fired net-gun should be effective for capturing other species at waterholes or other sites where the animals' presence can be predicted.

Résumé :
The emergence of farming during the Neolithic transition, including the domestication of livestock, was a critical point in the evolution of human kind. The goat (Capra hircus) was one of the first domesticated ungulates. In this study, we compared the genetic diversity of domestic goats to that of the modern representatives of their wild ancestor, the bezoar, by analyzing 473 samples collected over the whole distribution range of the latter species. This partly confirms and significantly clarifies the goat domestication scenario already proposed by archaeological evidence. All of the mitochondrial DNA haplogroups found in current domestic goats have also been found in the bezoar. The geographic distribution of these haplogroups in the wild ancestor allowed the localization of the main domestication centers. We found no haplotype that could have been domesticated in the eastern half of the Iranian Plateau, nor further to the east. A signature of population expansion in bezoars of the C haplogroup suggests an early domestication center on the Central Iranian Plateau (Yazd and Kerman Provinces) and in the Southern Zagros (Fars Province), possibly corresponding to the management of wild flocks. However, the contribution of this center to the current domestic goat population is rather low (1.4%). We also found a second domestication center covering a large area in Eastern Anatolia, and possibly in Northern and Central Zagros. This last domestication center is the likely origin of almost all domestic goats today. This finding is consistent with archaeological data identifying Eastern Anatolia as an important domestication center.

Résumé :
Monitoring progress towards the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires the assessment of potential future trends in poverty. This paper presents an econometric tool that provides a methodological framework to carry out projections of poverty rates worldwide and aims at assessing absolute poverty changes at the global level under different scenarios. The model combines country-specific historical estimates of the distribution of income, using Beta-Lorenz curves, with projections of population changes by age and education attainment level, as well as GDP projections to provide the first set of internally consistent poverty projections for all countries of the world. Making use of demographic and economic projections developed in the context of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, we create poverty paths by country up to the year 2030. The differences implied by different global scenarios span worldwide poverty rates ranging from 4.5% (around 375 million persons) to almost 6% (over 500 million persons) by the end of our projection period. The largest differences in poverty headcount and poverty rates across scenarios appear for Sub-Saharan Africa, where the projections for the most optimistic scenario imply over 300 million individuals living in extreme poverty in 2030. The results of the comparison of poverty scenarios point towards the difficulty of fulfilling the first goal of the SDGs unless further development policy efforts are enacted.

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-353071.

Résumé :
This thesis examines how global development goals affect Fijian plans and policy strategies to achieve food security. The concept of food security is vast and complex, as several development issues contribute to the difficulty in achieving such security. It is therefore relevant to look at some of the dominating and underlying causes that challenge the possibility for Fiji to achieve food security. Built on previous theoretical and empirical evidence, this thesis identifies poverty and vulnerability as two dominant causes that hinder food security on Fiji. However, other causes, both internal and external, are recognised. Global development goals such as the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals have highly influenced the strategies built within Fijian plans and policies. Millennium Development Goal 1 and 7, and Sustainable Development Goal 1 and 2, are of particular interest to this study, as the different goals target the issues of poverty, vulnerability and hunger. Although the different goals all target the underlying causes of food insecurity, this thesis finds that they differ in influencing a focus on achieving sustainable food security. Therefore, as the aspects of poverty, vulnerability and food security are highly intertwined, this thesis examines how strategies tackling poverty and vulnerability reduction have influenced strategies on food security on Fiji. By comparing the plans and policies built in consistency with the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals, it has been possible to analyse whether such global goals have had an influence on addressing the underlying causes of food security on Fiji. Using the method of structured focused comparison in combination with an in-depth text analysis, structured questions have been built in order to analyse the chosen materials. The analysis has been conducted using information from different national plans found to be of relevance to the purpose of this study. The results show that goals with greater focus on social and environmental vulnerability, as well as long-term targets to eradicate poverty, provide a greater success in influencing a focus on food security in Fijian plans and policies. However, additional factors such as political instability, climate change and globalization need to be integrated into further studies on the chosen subject, in order to provide a greater understanding of how to achieve food security in a Pacific Small Island Developing State such as Fiji.

Thesis, Umeå universitet, Handelshögskolan vid Umeå universitet (USBE), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-185687.

Résumé :
Today, supply chain is often complex with low transparency and traceability. This is causing environmental and social harm in lower tier levels of supply chains, which the focal firm will be held accountable for. In the light of this, focal firms are aspiring to become more sustainable, which includes sustainable practices in both primary and supportive activities. In order for organizations to achieve this, there is a need for higher transparency and traceability. An issue that can be solved by the implementation of blockchain technology. A blockchain allows transaction to be made without a third party which results in secured and verified information and thus increased transparency and traceability. Moreover, sustainability has moved to become imperative in organizations strategic decisions in recent years where Trippel Bottom Line is a common approach but current literature states that his approach often lack all dimensions in sustainability research. Making it clear that a broader view on sustainability is needed, which the UNs Global Goals has as it takes up different aspects including a more extensive view of the socioeconomic and environmental view of sustainability. The current literature is missing a more practical view of how the implementation of blockchain technology can help focal firms achieve the Global Goals. Thus, our study aims to answer the following research question: How can the application of blockchain technology in supply chain management help focal firms to achieve UNs Global Goals 12 and 13, by enabling transparency and traceability in supply chain networks? The purpose of this is study to understand how blockchain technology enables transparency and traceability in focal firms supply chains and how this can be applied when companies want to reach UNs Global Goals connected to responsible productionand consumption, and taking action against climate change, i.e., Global Goals 12 and 13.To answer our research question and fulfill the purpose, a qualitative study including eightsemi-structured interviews were conducted covering different themes related to the research question. Our findings shows that blockchain has several features that leads to transparency and traceability, namely, decentralized information sharing, secure information, verified information and enables better structures for communication within the supply chain. Thus, enables focal firms to act against climate change and promote sustainable consumption and production in theory supply chain. However, the findings show that to achieve the optimal outcome, this is dependent on the supply chain and its actors meeting certain criteria. These criterions include, the characteristics of the industry, the complexity of the supply chain, the costumers demand, the degree of adoption of the technology in the supply chain, the relationship between actors and supporting activities. This thesis theoretically contributes with further understating and a new logic of the connection between blockchain technology and sustainable supply chain management by showing that the transparency and traceability enabled by blockchain can help focal firms achieve sustainable practices by enabling decentralized, secure, and verified information. This facilitates a better structure for tracing carbon footprint and unethical production and working practices are made transparent. Further, the practical implication of this study is that the focal firms will get a better understanding and knowledge of the supply chain network and their production and consumption and making it easier to act against climate change. Lastly, the social implication of this study is that it facilitates a broader view on sustainability which includes the social dimension to a larger extent.

Campbell, Gavin A. « A goal-directed and policy-based approach to system management ». Thesis, University of Stirling, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/1220.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis presents a domain-independent approach to dynamic system management using goals and policies. A goal is a general, high-level aim a system must continually work toward achieving. A policy is a statement of how a system should behave for a given set of detectable events and conditions. Combined, goals may be realised through the selection and execution of policies that contribute to their aims. In this manner, a system may be managed using a goal-directed, policy-based approach. The approach is a collection of related techniques and tools: a policy language and policy system, goal definition and refinement via policy selection, and conflict filtering among policies. Central to these themes, ontologies are used to model application domains, and incorporate domain knowledge within the system. The ACCENT policy system (Advanced Component Control Enhancing Network Technologies, http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/accent) is used as a base for the approach, while goals and policies are defined using an extension of APPEL (Adaptable and Programmable Policy Environment and Language, http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/appel). The approach differs from existing work in that it reduces system state, goals and policies to a numerical rather than logical form. This is more user-friendly as the goal domain may be expressed without any knowledge of formal methods. All developed techniques and tools are entirely domain-independent, allowing for reuse with other event-driven systems. The ability to express a system aim as a goal provides more powerful and proactive high-level management than was previously possible using policies alone. The approach is demonstrated and evaluated within this thesis for the domains of Internet telephony and sensor network/wind turbine management.

Currently the main impacts and threats to island communities include bioinvasions and standing out the goats between them. Most of the islands reported in the literature, are ecosystems where vegetation evolved in absence of large herbivores. On the island of Mallorca is well known the ancestral presence of a pre-human endemic ungulate, Myotragus balearicus, which suggests that herbivore was a selection factor constantly present to the vegetation in the island. Today, two goats that currently shared habitat and hybridized, have mainly occupied its ecological niche: the Wild Mallorcan Goat and feral domestic goats. The presence of these goats has generated many opinions about its effect on the vegetation of the island. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to characterize and compare the botanical composition of the diet of the Wild Mallorcan Goat and feral domestic goat in Mallorca. Additionally, the browsing levels on the main components of the vegetation and the habitat use by both goats was evaluated in order to investigate possible differences in their social structure and behavior that help to elucidate the level of resource use and find possible evidences of climate change in the diet of extinct Myotragus balearicus. The study was carried out in six areas of the Sierra Tramuntana in Mallorca; three inhabited by the Wild Mallorcan Goat and three by the feral domestic goats. Microhistological analysis of faeces from each goat ecotype in spring, summer and winter for two years as well as the assessment of availability and browsing intensity of the most abundant species of vegetation were performed. Analysis of the feeding and social behavior in both goat ecotypes was conducted through focal in abovementioned seasons. Stomatal density and index of Buxus sp. epidermis fragments found in coprolites from extinct Myotragus were compared with actual epidermis of Buxus balarica and Buxus semprevirens to detect a possible manifestation of climate change. The diet of the Wild Mallorcan Goat and feral domestic goat was very similar especially in times of scarcity (Summer). Indeed, the possible damage on vegetation would be subject to an overpopulation of goats that goat ecotype itself. Both goat ecotypes showed a selective dietary behavior, with clear preferences and rejections, but also capable to adapt to availability because they use most species available. Few species are heavily browsed in all periods of the year, although the intensity of browsing by almost all studied species can be considered moderate. Some differences in the feeding behavior of the both goat ecotypes were found, especially related with herd size, suggesting a more efficient use of plant resources in the Wild Mallorcan Goat. The current density and stomatal indexes in B. balearica were considerably smaller than those found in Myotragus coprolites, which could be due to increased CO2. This thesis highlights the importance of a properly management of both goat ecotype populations so that ensure the conservation of animal and vegetal species.

Due to the high demand for pesticide by the agricultural systems and the possible inadequate use of the products, drift became one of the biggest concerns of the modern agriculture, and the correct use of adjuvants may be one of the possible alternatives to minimize the negative impact of spray operations. This study was developed to evaluate the effect of different adjuvants on physical and chemical properties of spray solutions, droplets spectra as well as drift potential measured in wind tunnel, aiming the correct choice of adjuvants to improve efficiency in pesticide application. For this purpose 18 commercially available agricultural spray adjuvants were selected including products usually mixed up with pesticides in the sprayer tank. The evaluation included physical and chemical properties of spray solutions (viscosity, density, surface tension and electric conductivity), droplets spectra and drift risk potential measured in wind tunnel. The experiment was set up with 33 treatments (solutions) obtained from 18 adjuvants used in different concentrations with 3 replications, including pure water as a standard. For wind tunnel tests and droplet spectra analysis it was used a Teejet XR8003 flat fan nozzles at 200 kPa (medium droplets) and all solutions were mixed up with a food color dye (Blue FDC) at 0,6% m v-1 for spectrophotometry analysis of drift deposits on the wind tunnel. The results showed that the addition of adjuvants changed physical and chemical properties of spray solutions in different magnitudes according to the product concentration. The organosilicon surfactants (Silwet 0.1% e 0.2% and BreakThru 0,1%) had the lowest values for surface tension, while the drift retardant based polymers (Define 0,06% e 0,12%) had the highest values for viscosity and density. Résumé :
The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organisation comprised of six countries, five of which are classed as having a low development level and one of which is classed as medium. The region has low rates of human development and electrical connectivity but is committed to meeting the universal access and clean energy goals of Sustainable Development Goal 7. This thesis seeks to explore the renewable energy potential of the EAC at a regional level. There is little study of the energy situation of the EAC as a specific region, contrasting this work to the majority of similar analyses that focus on the national or sub-Saharan level. The potential for solar PV and wind power in the EAC was examined through an analysis of existing energy systems, a simplified multi-criteria analysis through geographical information systems, and a comparison with similar work by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The region was shown to have a small but growing electricity sector and a primary energy system dominated by traditional biomass. The mapping analysis identified large areas across all studied countries as potentially suitable for on- or off-grid renewable energy. It also highlighted issues with the results of IRENA’s work in its current form. Solar PV and wind energy potential across the EAC is shown to be high, with a low carbon electricity sector consequently a possibility for the region in the future.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/iowtc2018-1079.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
New floating wind turbine designs are needed to reduce production costs and to increase mass production feasibility. The TetraSpar floating wind turbine achieves these goals by being constructed using components highly suitable for standardization and industrialization. The design makes use of a suspended submerged counter weight to obtain a low center of gravity of the floating system, while also allowing a low draft during transport and installation. This novel concept requires a multibody modeling approach to perform a dynamic load and response analysis, as the stiffness between the floating platform and the counter weight is provided by chains. Additional design criteria are required for the counter weight system dependent on a combination of chain capacity and maintaining positive tension in all of the lines. To satisfy these design criteria a global hydrodynamic load and response analysis of the floater and counter weight is performed. In this concept, the counter weight depth contributes significantly to the dynamic properties of the system and therefore a parametric study is conducted. The global response parameters of the rigid-body motion natural frequencies, nacelle accelerations, counter weight chain tensions, and maximum platform-pitch angles are compared. Design recommendations are made for the configuration of counter weight depth and suspension system layout.

Résumé :
It is better to know than not to know the devil. Platelet transfusion therapy is one such devil. While the therapy initially is a benefit and might even be life-saving, it often implicates future problems which prohibit optimal efficacy. The factors determining both the beneficial and the prohibitive effects are complex and not seldom masked. Problem areas include the logistics of availability, the prevention of immunological effects and incompatibilities, the prevention of trans- missable diseases and the prediction of clinical efficacy.Efforts for optimising platelet transfusion therapy should focus on safety, purity, potency and clinical efficacy. However, each of these premises has to be outlined with precision in order to allow targetted development.Major areas of attention will be the selection and utilisation of available resources, the options for purification, efforts to optimise processing, preservation and storage conditions, innovation of the in vitro viability concept and alternative approaches to selection in order to increase the predictive value of compatibility testing.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
It is always a major endeavor and challenge to build a new combined-cycle power plant. This fact combined with having stringent reliability, availability and efficiency contractual terms necessitates a well planned, highly effective maintenance strategy. To further complicate the matter, the company was rolling out a new EAM; SAP. AES Corporation was facing exactly these issues for their new plant in Cartagena, Spain. This paper will describe the approach used by AES to develop a proactive maintenance program that integrates condition and performance information to achieve their goals. The process begins with creating a maintenance strategy using the SRCM® process. From the results of the strategy development SAP-PLM module was configured to support agreed to business process models, asset hierarchy schemes, task list, value lists and spare parts determination. The strategy developed also identified the PdM and ODR technologies to use and lead to the development of the PdM program. It also created the operator driven (ODR) tasks by specifying what equipment is to be watched by operators as part of an equipment health program. Finally, PdM, ODR and appropriate process data were linked together into a decision support system. This information combined with the plant performance information will provide AES an effective, integrated program to manage their plant and equipment. Due to the limited staff to manage the station a software tool was used to lessen the effort to understand the condition of critical equipment based on the data. A discussion of why it is necessary for new and existing plants to create a proactive maintenance program that starts with business processes followed by software and hardware including CMMS, PdM, online monitoring, electronic operator rounds and ends with the right data in these tools is presented. Without the proper data including asset register, criticality, reliability information and condition data the program will not support plant objectives and could potentially cost the company large penalties for non-performance. Examples of work products developed with work flowcharts will be provided. By actively pursing an integrated, proactive solution for the maintenance and performance programs AES will achieve their business objectives from the very beginning of plant commercialization. It will also ultimately lead to savings in not only implementing a complete maintenance program but will provide a solid foundation for managing and improving the program operation of the plant to meet and exceed contractual performance requirements.

Résumé :
Purpose – to reveal the scientific approach to the regional policy in the field of research, use and increase the recreational potential of the regions of Ukraine, creating an effective mechanism for the development of the recreational system of the region due to an in-depth study of the recreational system potential, the quality of the recreational environment and highlighting its special structure. As a sub-goal of the study was determined the identification of factors affecting the competitiveness of the recreational system of the regions, which will make it possible to clarify the directions of activities to increase the competitiveness of the tourism and recreation sector of the economy of Ukraine. Findings – the paper proposes the mechanism of well-balanced mutual development of humanʼs health and recreational system management. Research limitations – the study addresses the problem of using recreational potential in such a way that, as a result of its use, the least damage is inflicted on the territory and on the population. To determine the direction of development were identified as “sore spots” groups of the recreational system. To solve this problem has been proposed a mechanism for the balanced development of the recreational system, which will allow: 1) to maintain and develop the existing recreational potential; 2) to increase the share of regional profits from the use of recreational potential. Methodology – the methodology and research tools are based on the methods of theoretical generalization, refinement of the conceptual apparatus, logical-structural modelling, scientific argumentation, and comparative analysis. Practical implications – the practical significance lies in the fact that the article reveals the problematic issues of recreation in Ukraine and suggests a mechanism for the management and sustainable development of the countryʼs recreational potential. The use of the proposed mechanism will lead to an increase in the incomes of the regions from the exploitation of the recreational potential and will create the conditions for the preservation of the recreational systems themselves. Originality/Value – the article value lies in the fact that it proposes a mechanism for the balanced development of the recreational system and the person in it; carried out the allocation of recreational management in a special function of the recreational system. The relationship between the development strategies of the recreational system and the assessment of the recreational competitiveness of the region is shown.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This report explains scenario planning as a climate change adaptation tool in general, then describes how it was applied to Wind Cave National Park as the second part of a pilot project to dovetail climate change scenario planning with National Park Service (NPS) Resource Stewardship Strategy development. In the orientation phase, Park and regional NPS staff, other subject-matter experts, natural and cultural resource planners, and the climate change core team who led the scenario planning project identified priority resource management topics and associated climate sensitivities. Next, the climate change core team used this information to create a set of four divergent climate futures—summaries of relevant climate data from individual climate projections—to encompass the range of ways climate could change in coming decades in the park. Participants in the scenario planning workshop then developed climate futures into robust climate-resource scenarios that considered expert-elicited resource impacts and identified potential management responses. Finally, the scenario-based resource responses identified by park staff and subject matter experts were used to integrate climate-informed adaptations into resource stewardship goals and activities for the park's Resource Stewardship Strategy. This process of engaging resource managers in climate change scenario planning ensures that their management and planning decisions are informed by assessments of critical future climate uncertainties.

Résumé :
The goal of this case is for students to learn through the development of a sustainable river governance plan for Massachusetts focused on balancing needs and perspectives on local agriculture, flood resilience, and healthy ecosystems in the context of climate change. This will be challenging. Ideally, a river governance plan developed by the students would support local agriculture, increase flood resilience, and promote environmental stewardship. A role-playing exercise is included in this case that involves representatives of several stakeholders groups (personas assumed by a subset of students); these include a farmer, a fisher/recreationalist, a state river manager, an environmentalist, and a resident. The students will learn about the goals of a stakeholder to discuss with the others, negotiate with them, find ways to resolve conflicts and finally to create a governance plan.

Résumé :
The author characterized the Ukrainian national values, national interests and national goals. It is emphasized that national values are conceptual, ideological bases, consolidating factors, important life guidelines on the way to effective protection of Ukraine from Russian aggression and building a democratic, united Ukrainian state. Author analyzes the functioning of the mass media in the context of educational propaganda of individual, social and state values, the dominant core of which are patriotism, human rights and freedoms, social justice, material and spiritual wealth of Ukrainians, natural resources, morality, peace, religiosity, benevolence, national security, constitutional order. These key national values are a strong moral and civic core, a life-giving element, a self-affirming synergy, which on the basis of homogeneity binds the current Ukrainian society with the ancestors and their centuries-old material and spiritual heritage. Attention is focused on the fact that the current problem of building the Ukrainian state and protecting it from the brutal Moscow invaders is directly dependent on the awareness of all citizens of the essence of national values, national interests, national goals and filling them with the meaning of life, charitable socio-political life. It is emphasized that the missionary vocation of journalists to orient readers and listeners to the meaningful choice of basic national values, on the basis of which Ukrainian citizens, regardless of nationality together they will overcome the external Moscow and internal aggression of the pro-Russian fifth column, achieve peace, return the Ukrainian territories seized by the Kremlin imperialists and, in agreement will build Ukrainian Ukraine.

Résumé :
There is abundant evidence that leadership development leads to positive impact. But how do we define impact, and what factors should be considered when assessing the results of leadership development? Our comprehensive framework is specifically relevant to leadership development and defines four levels of impact (individual, group, organizational, and societal) as well as three factors that contribute to its effectiveness (leader characteristics, leadership solution, and context). Understanding the four levels will enable organizations to clarify the goals and purpose of their development initiatives and know where to focus measurement. Attending to the contributing factors can help organizations understand the results they are getting and take appropriate steps to maximize the impact of their development initiatives.
