Résumé :
Studying the relationship between quantum coherence and energy is an intriguing and vital subject in quantum thermodynamics. Quantum engine provides an excellent platform to emphasize it. By constructing a bipartite entanglement engine (BEE) model consisting of a single qubit as the target qubit and a two-qubit as the ancilla, we have investigated the influence of quantum coherence of ancilla on work extraction of BEE at length, and analytically calculated the extractable work of BEE for the ancilla with quantum coherence (QC). We found that the extractable work of BEE is not only dependent on

Historically, one of the central concerns that has plagued the field of teacher education is the observation that fragmentation characterizes the experience of learning to teach. Too often, university-based teacher education programs consist of a set of disconnected individual courses; separate clinical work from coursework; and lack a vision of teaching and learning. Therefore, some teacher educators have argued that creating structurally and conceptually coherent programs will result in more powerful learning for prospective teachers. Yet, although empirical work on such programs is growing,

Heat engines, which cyclically transform heat into work, are ubiquitous in technology. Lasers and masers may be viewed as heat engines that rely on population inversion or coherence in the active medium. Here we put forward an unconventional paradigm of a remarkably simple and robust electromagnetic heat-powered engine that bears basic differences to any known maser or laser: The proposed device makes use of only one Raman transition and does not rely on population inversion or coherence in its two-level working medium. Nor does it require any coherent driving. The engine can be powered by the

Résumé :
In Newtonian mechanics, any closed-system dynamics of a composite system in a microstate will leave all its individual subsystems in distinct microstates, however this fails dramatically in quantum mechanics due to the existence of quantum entanglement. Here we introduce the notion of a `coherent work process', and show that it is the direct extension of a work process in classical mechanics into quantum theory. This leads to the notion of `decomposable' and `non-decomposable' quantum coherence and gives a new perspective on recent results in the theory of asymmetry as well as early analysis i

In this work, we propose an alternative approach to synthesize the optical beam with a FP polarization state through the spatial coherence engineering of a partially coherent beam. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of the coherence of two atoms trapped in one cavity with resonance and large detuned characters, respectively. By means of tracing over the freedom of the cavity, the evolution coherent state can be obtained. Subsequently, the coherence within the two different scenarios is discussed. Remarkably, an interesting result is obtained as the coherence can be enhanced to a large extent in the framework of large detuning. Besides, we find that there exists a distinctive phenomenon of recovery of the coherence with the interaction time of atom–cavity.

The Margenau–Hill scheme, among others, extends the previous approach to allow for a non-equilibrium initial state. We establish a quantitative comparison between both schemes in terms of the amount of coherence present in the initial state of the system, as quantified by the l1-coherence measure. Résumé :
Policy coherence for development, or PCD, refers to the need for multiple policies from different sectors to work in unison rather than in opposition to each other, if international development is to be achieved. In Europe, the argument for PCD was based on the recognition that EU efforts on development cooperation were often contradicted or undermined by other EU policies, both internal as much as external, to the extent that the EU was effectively taking back with one hand what it had given with the other. In some severe cases, the EU was even taking back more than it gave. Thus for instance

Résumé :
A new geopolitical reality and challenges in the EU’s close neighbourhood, especially the war in Ukraine, have drawn attention once again towards examining whether the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and its instruments work. This working paper re-assesses the effectiveness, coherence and sustainability of EU CFSP actions through case studies. In doing so, this paper tests and refines a set of assessment criteria – developed partially in ENGAGE Working Paper 10 on intelligence and security cooperation, and partially in these pages – to identify specific obstacles to, as well as possi

Résumé :
This article explores the rationale behind a performance given by the authors at the Unfolding the Process symposium held in Oslo in November 2015. For this occasion, the authors devised a new version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations that builds upon Emmerson’s arrangement of the work for two pianos in 2012. A shortened version of the work (c.30 minutes) was designed that aimed nonetheless to maintain the original work’s sense of structural balance and coherence. This version involved the transposition of a number of variations into different keys to explore the possibility of adding a satisfying

Résumé :
The European Union’s (EU) portfolio of external activities is expanding in important ways to include a diverse range of policy areas, which has given rise to the notion of “external action plus”. In practical terms, this assortment of policy areas may be linked and interact in ways that open opportunities for more effective, coherent and sustainable external action. Given the importance of these developments, Work Package 6 of the ENGAGE project, focusing on External Action Plus, has undertaken a targeted investigation into the ways in which external action plus policies are linked and can be

The institutions and units at the Center of Government (CoG) provide managerial direction and coherence to the complex machinery of government to accelerate the delivery of its priority objectives. In recent years, economic, social, political, and technological transformations have reshaped the functions of the CoG, as well as the tools available to CoG practitioners. For example, the acceleration of multidimensional transformations and disruptions--including pandemics, climate hazards, economic crises, technological developments, and global conflicts--has enhanced the value of anticipatory go

The CEDCA Overview of Impact Pathways (Figure 1) presents a visual summary of key impact pathways from across the 12 projects of the Clean Energy for Development: A Call to Action (CEDCA) initiative, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). It is the result of an analysis of initial documentation from each of the projects within the initiative to identify areas of coherence across their proposed activities, and desired outcomes and impacts. It does not seek to provide an exhaustive account of every aspect of all the CEDCA projects, but to identify the different types of

The European Union’s (EU) portfolio of external activities has expanded considerably to include a variety of policy areas. The linkage and use of these policy areas – collectively known as ‘external action plus policies’ – can contribute to the EU’s effectiveness as a global actor by equipping it with an array of tools necessary to address the challenges of today’s uncertain world. This paper develops an analytical framework to explore the internal and external factors that facilitate or obstruct linkages among external action plus policies and how these linkages contribute to EU external acti

Résumé :
A central and implicit issue that shapes the present political and institutional consensus surrounding child labour is the notion of harm. Although efforts to address children’s work rest firmly on assumptions about what is harmful, no coherent theory of harm exists. In this paper, we critically explore ‘harm’ in the context of children’s work and call for a more situated and nuanced approach, incorporating ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’ dimensions. Such an approach has important implications for future research and policy action.
