Résumé :
A methodology was developed to incorporate the structural contribution of working platforms, including those constructed with industrial byproducts, into the design of flexible pavements. Structural contribution of the working platform was quantified with the 1993 AASHTO flexible pavement design guide in terms of a structural number or an effective roadbed modulus. Two methods are proposed. One method treats the working platform as a subbase layer and assigns a structural number to the working platform for use in computing the overall structural number of the pavement. The other method adjusts the effective roadbed modulus to account for the improvement in the roadbed provided by the working platform. Resilient modulus obtained from large-scale model experiments conducted on several working platform materials (e.g., breaker run stone, Grade 2 gravel, foundry slag, foundry sand, and bottom ash) was used in the analysis. Design charts show the structural number or the roadbed modulus as a function of type of material and thickness of the working platform.

Résumé :
The growing application of smart manufacturing systems and the expansion of the Industry 4.0 model have created a need for new teaching platforms for education, rapid application development, and testing. This research addresses this need with a proposal for a model of working environment monitoring in smart manufacturing, based on emerging wireless sensor technologies and the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol. In accordance with the proposed model, a testing platform was developed. The testing platform was built on open-source hardware and software components. The testing platform was used for the validation of the model within the presented experimental environment. The results showed that the proposed model could be developed by mainly using open-source components, which can then be used to simulate different scenarios, applications, and target systems. Furthermore, the presented stable and functional platform proved to be applicable in the process of rapid prototyping, and software development for the targeted systems, as well as for student teaching as part of the engineering education process.

In this contribution to the Media-N special issue, “Humans Are Underrated: Art & Labor in the Amazon Economy,” I narrate creative projects that disrupt or interfere with the Mechanical Turk platform. My place as an artist and employer in the elastic workforce since 2008 has given me a close and nuanced view of life online in the virtual workplace. The jobs I have created on the platform ask workers to perform athletic events, create videos, meditate, and talk back to Jeff Bezos. The materials I collect from the workers are integrated into art works that amplify the visibility of the workers and their unique voices. This article shows how those “underrated” humans in the Amazon economy are creative, thoughtful, and intelligent.

Résumé :
A study was conducted in the field and with a large-scale model experiment (LSME) to evaluate the structural contribution of a 0.30-m-thick geosynthetic-reinforced granular layer used as a working platform for construction over soft subgrade. The study was conducted in the context of the 1993 AASHTO design guideline, in which the structural number (SN) of the pavement is based on layer coefficients (each defined using a resilient modulus). Working platforms reinforced with geosynthetics had smaller elastic deflections and larger elastic moduli than unreinforced working platforms with the same thickness. Reinforcement factors obtained in the field ranged from 1.2 to 1.8; those obtained in the laboratory ranged from 1.7 to 2.0, with greater reinforcement factors for the less extensible geosynthetics (geogrid, woven geotextile) for a 0.3-m-thick granular working platform. Of the four geosynthetics tested, the geogrid resulted in the greatest increase in modulus. Reinforcing the working platforms with geosynthetics resulted in increases in layer coefficients ranging from 50% to 70%. Similarly, increases in SN for a typical pavement structure were realized, ranging from 3% to 11% when all other factors were equal.

Résumé :
Urban planners are increasingly working with ideas around datafied cities, such as platform urbanism, to understand urban life and changes with technology. This article seeks to assist urban planners in these efforts by analysing and mapping the qualities of platform urbanism. Drawing on a dataset of approximately 100 examples that detail urban data practices, we trace some of the current tendencies that are shaping the nature and dynamics of platform urbanism. While we identify no unifying narrative or overarching pattern to our data, we interpret this as supporting Barns’ (2019) notion of a pivot towards platforms. We argue this through exploring the interoperability between data sources and domains (vertical and horizontal integration), identifying elements of how platforms intermediate urban life through their growth in different sectors and the use of geolocation, and note the different artefacts that contribute to platform urbanism. We also note a concerning dynamic where city administration becomes ‘locked in’ to specific corporate products and interests, and thereby ‘locked out’ from alternatives. We discuss this in the context of social inclusion and what this means for urban planners, including the fragility of corporate platforms and what platforms urbanism means for social relationships in the city.

Résumé :
The paper deals with a dynamic analysis of a passive suspension of a working machine horizontal platform and the two configurations of its suspension system. For the individual alternatives the mathematical models are formulated. The rigid horizontal platform is excited in two perpendicular horizontal directions by kinematic excitation, which was acquired by an experimental measurement of the displacements of the working machine cabin. For the arbitration of which configuration is better two criterions were considered. The first criterion was the effective displacement in two perpendicular directions of the suspended horizontal plate and its rotation around the vertical axis. The second criterion was the effective acceleration of the horizontal plate in two perpendicular directions and the angular acceleration around the vertical axis. The numerical simulations shown that the first alternative (marked as A) gives better results in the reduction of vibration.

Résumé :
Building on an emerging literature concerning algorithmic management, this article analyzes the processes by which food delivery platforms control workers and uncovers variation in the extent to which such platforms constrain the freedoms—over schedules and activities—associated with gig work. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 55 respondents working on food delivery platforms, as well as a survey of 955 platform food delivery workers, we find that although all of the food delivery platforms use algorithmic management to assign and evaluate work, there is significant cross-platform variation. Instacart, the largest grocery delivery platform, exerts a type of control we call “algorithmic despotism,” regulating the time and activities of workers more stringently than other platform delivery companies. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of the spectrum of algorithmic control for the future of work.

Résumé :
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted many around the world, some more than others, having socioeconomic impacts around the globe. Due to its rapid spread many countries implemented restrictions, such as quarantines to uphold social distancing between its citizens. In addition, the coronavirus has not only affected people’s way of life but also many companies’ financial health worldwide. This pandemic’s side effects has resulted in increased digital transformation, causing many companies without the required infrastructure to rapidly implement mechanism and strategies to handle this type of work style. This studies aim is to give an insight in employee’s experiences and reactions to a rapid digital implementation, in a company without the infrastructure in place. With the help of an inductive approach and a multi level framework, four themes emerged from the interviews conducted ImplementationConsequences, Organizational Support, Expectations of Digital Implementation and Work-related Differences. The results showed that there is a discrepancy between the necessary factors for a successful implementation, highlighted in the model used and the respondent’s answers. Linked to this was the gender differences, a new factor arising from the data collected, emphasising the difficulties linked to teleworking but affecting a proactive use of digital tools, and hence lowering the work productivity. Even though there were differences, there were also parables showing that acceptance, attitude, and involvement in the implementation, among other factors are crucial for an openness towards digitalization. Finally, these factors and their relationship with digital implementation as well as the pandemic were explored trough a multi level framework.

Résumé :
This qualitative study is constructive in its nature and it aims to find how remote workers perceive usability of communication features across different tools and platforms. Answering two main research questions; How do remote users perceive usability of communication features across different communication tools and platforms? and How, according to users, that features can be improved?, this research aims to link them with scholarly literature, find potential knowledge gaps and highlight improvement areas. Learnability, efficiency, universality and general satisfaction are researched within five participants, coming from different sectors and occupations. Usability in IS context connects ICT with HCI. Trends, challenges and solutions in remote work field lead us to different practices in work and knowledge sharing. Thematic analysis brings seven main themes that show satisfactory results in general. However, dissatisfaction is addressed to efficiency and universality with functionality of communication tools and platforms which falls within ICT, and learnability within its human component, HCI. Furthermore, three step solution is proposed: organizational readiness, standards in communication practice and soft skills. Contributions of this research confirm importance of human component that defines usability in remote field. General usability and satisfaction with ICT and its components is confirmed and improvement areas are addressed within HCI. This research serves as a good base for research of usability of same communication features across different channels however, comparing on-site and remote workers within specific fields.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the legal protection of the health of offshore workers through the interdisciplinary analysis of Annex II of Regulatory Norm 30; International Conventions of the International Labor Organization and the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 18001: 2007. The study addresses the types of platforms, how to structure the offshore work in the Campos Basin (RJ); the main accidents in the past and how are currently working conditions and safety platforms and the physical, emotional and professional problems of the workers of the platforms. The thesis also presents the performance of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels in the prevention of accidents. Although there are national norms and international conventions, either directly or indirectly, to ensure safety in the work environment on the platforms, they are not effectively enforced by offshore companies, which is also a factor that could compromise workers' health and necessitate of effective standardization.

Lampert, Arthur. « L’autonomie du travailleur ». Thesis, Paris 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA020079.

The economy’s “tertiarisation” and the development of new information and communication technologies are part of the evolution of the working relationships. Several schemes issued by professional practice and endorsed by the law (fixed annual working time, home office, “umbrella companies”) make it possible to set up a new working relationship that differs from the traditional link of legal subordination, key of the “salariat”. At the same time, there is an expansion of self-employment for which digital platforms are competing. Paradoxically, the expansion of the employee’s autonomy comes with a decline of the autonomy of the self-employed. The convergence between these two schemes of working organization imposes to narrow the gap between the rules governing them. Thus, the decrease of the employer’s sphere of authority must be linked with a lightering of its obligations. At the same time, the benefit of certain protective measures which was reserved to employees should be extended to the self-employed since their situation has evolved. As a whole, it leads to an evolution of the labor relationships which could finally look like a revolution

Work at height is a common operating pattern of engineering. To enable people work at height, a temporary construction, named Scaffolds, is usually built to afford workers and materials. In recent years, the foreign countries had developed the “aerial working platform” to replace the scaffolds which are time-wasting and risky. However, the corresponding laws of aerial working platform are not completed in our country. Besides, the specifications of the construction are not available either. Therefore, it is not secure to use the equipment under lacking of the complete management for safety. In this thesis, the strategies of choosing aerial working platform in different situations are proposed. The actively self-safety management is also introduced to prevent the vocational accident. After all, a rule of safety management for using the aerial working platform is established to be followed. In this research, the specifications of the manufactured Aerial working platforms are firstly evaluated to fit the operating mode. Secondly, the laws and standards of the advanced countries are compared with the domestic rules. In Japan, there are completed laws and detail specifications and prescript of the occupational safety and health facilities for Aerial working platform. The aerial working platform manufacturer are demanded to obey the domestic standards in America and to provide detail operating directions in user’s menu, According to the construction of the aerial working platform, the main concerns of purchase are listed. In order to finish job quickly, the boom-supported elevating work platform is suggested. The safety of operating the platform could never be ignored. The operating procedures and manipulating standards, which are specified by the laws, are provided in the certain platform’s menu and discussed in a specified chapter. For the other types of platform, not only the user’s menu from manufacturer should be obeyed, but also the experience of the master should be learned. Taking the special conditions into account, the accident could be avoided by preventing improper operation. With more serious consideration, the conclusions of this research are made to be followed by the enterprises and to be adopted by the managers. Though there are several different operating mode of work at height, the main idea of this paper is to proper choose a flexible, high performance aerial working platform such that ease and safe can be both achieved. Therefore, the user’s confidence could be established through the professional safety management facilities. With serious standards, the space for wildcatter would no more exist.

Viral marketing is a popular issue in recent business world, we understand the motivation, attitude and behavior of those net-friends share their opinions of products or services online. However, we rarely discuss what make these opinions go on viral, that is this research concerned about. Reviewing the literatures of eWOM and brand attitude, the past research focused on viral emailing. However, these days viral marketing is spread by social media such as Youtbe. Thus, this study proposes that attributes of Youtube can affect consumers’ behavior. This study conducted an experimental design and results are video total views and product logo replacement can effect consumers’ behavior. Based on the total views, consumer will decide whether they share this video online. Product logo replacement will effect consumer to have a different attitude toward the brand. However, this study had not discovered other attributes of Youtube, such as the comments or the ratings of the video, and we left them behind for future research to discover its effects on consumers eWOM intention and their brand attitude.

Résumé :
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) represents 182 countries with a focus on animal health, animal welfare and veterinary public health. The OIE has several Collaborating Centres that support the work of the organisation. The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise ‘Giuseppe Caporale’ (IZSAM) is the Secretariat for the OIE Collaborating Centre Network on Veterinary Emergencies (EmVetNet). In April 2020, the IZSAM initiated a COVID-19 Thematic Platform on Animal Welfare. The working group represented the EmVetNet Collaborating Centres, international institutions, veterinary associations, authorities and animal welfare organisations. Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine recruited summer research students whom catalogued over 1,200 animal welfare related reports and provided 64 report narratives for the working group. IZSAM launched the EmVetNet website (https://emvetnet.izs.it) for public and private exchange of information, materials, and guidelines related to veterinary emergencies. The EmVetNet COVID-19 Thematic Platform on Animal Welfare continues to meet to address emerging issues, strengthen the network for future emergencies, and share information with stakeholders including national Veterinary Services responding to the epidemic.

Yonally, Emilie, Nadia Butler, Santiago Ripoll et Olivia Tulloch. Review of the Evidence Landscape on the Risk Communication and Community Engagement Interventions Among the Rohingya Refugees to Enhance Healthcare Seeking Behaviours in Cox's Bazar. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), juillet 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2021.032.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This report is the first output in a body of work undertaken to identify operationally feasible suggestions to improve risk communication and community engagement efforts (RCCE) with displaced Rohingya people in Cox’s Bazar. Specifically, these should seek to improve healthcare seeking behaviour and acceptance of essential health services in the camps where the Rohingya reside. It was developed by the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) at the request of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in Bangladesh. As a first step in this process, this review paper synthesises and assesses the quality of evidence landscape available in Cox’s Bazar and how the Rohingya seek and access healthcare services in Cox’s Bazar and presents the findings from key informant interviews on the topic. Findings are structured in five discussion sections: (1) evidence quality; (2) major themes and variations in the evidence; (3) learnings drawn and recommendations commonly made; (4) persistent bottlenecks; and (5) areas for further research. This synthesis will inform a roundtable discussion with key actors working for the Rohingya refugees to identify next steps for RCCE and research efforts in Cox’s Bazar to improve health outcomes among the Rohingya.

Résumé :
Mabrouka Hdaya is a craftswoman who has been producing bags and baskets for 20 years. Support from the Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) project helped her overcome the technical and financial obstacles that she has faced since 2018 when she started her entrepreneurial journey. YPE, in partnership with the Local Initiative and Development Forum (FIDEL), selected Mabrouka for training to improve her weaving and business management skills. As a result, she has become more confident and developed working relationships with other people in her trade. Her business was doing well until the COVID-19 pandemic affected markets. She is hopeful she will recover as soon as the markets re-open and national fairs re-start. In the meantime, she sells small quantities of her products through social media platforms and the FIDEL shop. This is the story of an entrepreneur who knows her way forward and is ready to fight uncertainties.
