Résumé :
The 'Beyond' as Bhaba1 (1994:1) conceives it, is "neither a new horizon, nor a leaving behind of the past"; rather it is the borders to the present. These boundaries of the present are the "that from which something begins its essential unfolding", according to Heidegger (1978:356). Unfolding as a consequence of the intersection of time and space, produces complex, as opposed to unitary or reductive, figures of difference and identity in Bhaba's (1994:2) view. It is with these 'complex figure of difference and identity' which enact 'hindsight' to re-describe our cultural contemporaneity; to re-inscribe our human, historic commonality, that this study is interested in. Within the context of nation branding, these figures offer an alternative to the archetypal western approach to identity construction. The western approach to nation branding is based on two critical assumptions; firstly, that modern nations are composed of homogeneous societies, and secondly, that these societies share a common culture. It is here that the problem lies, for at its essence, South Africa is pluralistic. We are a multicultural rainbow nation. We do not have typical shared myths, historical memories and a mass public culture due to historical and more recent political struggles within our country. Consequently, we do not follow the typical western approach to nation branding. It is therefore the intention of this study to make use of Bhaba's (1994) theory of the 'Beyond' and his notions of Interstices and Cultural Hybridity as adjectives and means of complex culture production, introduced above, to propose an alternative multicultural South African identity to be spatially transcribed into the South African pavilion at the Expo 2020, Dubai UAE. To this end, the study conducted a Hermeneutical, Social Visual Semiotic and Lexical analysis of I-JUSI, the selected hybrid culture. The results of the examination produced seven brand indicators. These indicators in conjunction with a set of design principals; established via a precedent study of artifacts, interiors, buildings and landscapes that explored or expressed the nation's new emerging collective national identity, will be used to spatially embody the design concept for the pavilion.

Multiplicity is a key challenge and opportunity of world politics, yet scholars continue to struggle to do it justice. One way of reducing the challenge multiple times and spaces present us with has been to organise them allochronically, to align spatial difference in temporal sequence. The effect is a story where others are not different, they are just behind. Scholars have criticised this thinking as it appears in “Western thought”. In recent years, suggestions have emerged that Chinese thought may offer an alternative that escapes allochronic thinking, most notably through the foreign policy-driven concept “harmonious world”. Scholars have studied this term with the aim of finding out its true meaning. This thesis asks instead what “harmony” – and more specifically “harmonious world” – does when it is deployed in contemporary China. It traces the concept across several contexts: the policy documents and speeches that launched it as an official term; the academic literatures that asked what a harmonious world might look like; the propaganda at Expo 2010 Shanghai China that aimed to illustrate it; and the online spoofing culture egao that was used to criticise, resist and avoid “harmonisation”.The key claim of this thesis is that “harmonious world”, as articulated in the contexts examined here, has not taken place, is not taking place and will not take place. Ways of thinking about time, space and multiplicity in China’s relation to the world, and particularly “harmonious world”, repeat the allochronising logic recognisable from “Western” discourses, which disallows the openness of the future and reduces the possibilities of harmony and of the political. As an effect of its excessive proliferation harmony disappears as an imagined metaphysical possibility . The harmonious system is not based on co-operation or non co-operation, but works according to what this thesis calls an onco-operative logic: the quasi-suicidal logic of cancer and the (auto)immune. Ultimately, the aim and most important contribution of this thesis is to bring the onco-operative uncertainty of the political back into the harmonious world concept in order to elucidate the negotiation of danger and necessity of multiplicity.

Résumé :
With the ascendency of neoliberal ideology, mega-events have been increasingly used by ruling elites as part of a narrative of competitive progress in order to attract investment capital. Unfortunately, the dark side of mega-events has not received enough attention in existing literature, especially the critically important question of displacement and forced eviction because of such events. This thesis contributes to the literature by debunking the myths of mega-events and examining the domicide effects through an in-depth case study of the Shanghai World Expo. Theoretically, the thesis develops the notion of domicide by incorporating the literature on domination and subordination. It attempts to negotiate the tension between the subjective experience of victimhood and the objective process of victimisation in domcide. In analysing the domicide experiences, this thesis proposes to look into both the temporalities and spatialities of domicide, and to examine the variegated ways the displaced appropriate them. It questions how the morally, legally and politically problematic act of domicide is committed without effective forms of resistance. Empirically, this thesis offers a post hoc impact assessment of the ‘best ever’ World Expo and voices the suppressed outcries from those on the receiving end. It supplies a detailed account of the social production of domicide with a case from the Global South, and in doing so; it explores ‘actually existing neoliberalism’ in the Chinese context, expanding the geographical horizon in existing literature and enhancing our understanding of the articulation of neoliberalism in different localities. Although contextualised through the lens of mega-events, the conditions, mechanisms, process and tactics that provide the fertile soil for domicide as identified in this thesis can teach us a great deal about urban spatial practices elsewhere. The thesis draws upon the data collected through site-intensive ethnographic fieldwork, mixing the use of interviews, (non-)participatory observation, survey, unorthodox focus groups and media content. It argues that the exceptionality of the World Expo revokes political, moral and legal boundaries in causing pain to affected citizens in order to facilitate the accumulation of capital. Such exceptionality is constructed through various normative discourses. Those discourses and values naturalise and legitimatise the process of domicide, produce symbolic violence, and undermine the solidarity of the powerlessness. The submission of the displaced to the dominant power enables the production and reproduction of a repressive social and spatial structure. These are vitally important questions given the international focus on China’s economic growth and urbanisation.

Résumé :
This thesis examines Shanghai’s urbanisation by applying Henri Lefebvre’s theories of the production of space and everyday life. A review of Lefebvre’s theories indicates that each mode of production produces its own space. Capitalism is perpetuated by producing new space and commodifying everyday life. Applying Lefebvre’s regressive-progressive method as a methodological framework, this thesis periodises Shanghai’s history to the ‘semi-feudal, semi-colonial era’, ‘socialist reform era’ and ‘post-socialist reform era’. The Shanghai World Exposition 2010 was chosen as a case study to exemplify how urbanisation shaped urban experience. Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews. This thesis argues that Shanghai developed a ‘state-led/-participation mode of production’. The state redefined its distributive role to act as both a regulator and a market player, and manipulated its regulatory power to generate revenue from land commodification. The state thus accelerated urbanisation by relocating residents to new towns. Inhabitants’ daily routines were rearranged. Lefebvre envisaged an urban revolution to occur when urbanisation is complete. But my data illustrates that civil resistance is not widely supported because urbanisation has generally improved living quality. This thesis concludes by examining the possibility of Shanghai’s resuming its status as the site of modernisation and the critique of modernity.

Résumé :
Wally Olins (2008:6), points out that in contemporary culture “brands and branding are all-pervasive and ubiquitous”. As he says, one need only walk down the high street of any major foreign city in the world, be it San Francisco or Shanghai, to be embraced by so many familiar brands, including Coca-Cola, KFC, Apple MAC, Chanel and Toyota, that one could mistake it for home. In the last 15 years particularly, the ubiquitous influence of brands and branding has seen the field outgrow its commercial role and expand into more secular and political spheres. Thus, the focus of this study is the role and influence of brands and branding on modern nations and their reputations via intentionally constructed national identities, with specific reference to South Africa. According to the main objectives of this study, focus was placed on the critical examination of South Africa’s nation brand, It’s Possible, in the light of the theoretical ideals for an intentional constructed national identity as proposed by Bartholmé and Melewar, Anholt and Olins. The examination centred on the analysis and interpretation of the individual communiqués that constituted the South African pavilion at the world Expo 2010, as their content is the result of the implementation of the nation’s visual brand language. The analysis and interpretation sought to, firstly, investigate the constitution of the South African visual brand language used in the design and construction of the pavilion’s communiqués and, secondly, to broadly identify the core values of the intentionally constructed South Africa nation brand – It’s Possible, made manifest in the South African exhibit through the visual communiqués.

This monograph dedicated to the Expo 2010 Shanghai and it contributes to the general history of World Expos. It discusses the history of China’s participations in the World Expos and the contemporary effects of Expo 2010 Shanghai from multiple aspects.Firstly, it aims to trace the history of China's presence in the World Expos (from 1851 to 2018) by attempting to reproduce the of the country image of China that wanted to be shown to the world, but also to measure the impact of Chinese domestic politics on this international presence. Relative Chinese documents, including unpublished ones have been mobilized for this purpose.Secondly, the focus is on the Expo 2010 Shanghai, which was held within a very short time (184 days) as a mega-event. By reconstructing the root cause of the decision that led to this event, it is a question of identifying the role of this event that played on three scales: local, national and international. Expo 2010 Shanghai is part of a policy of geopolitical affirmation of China (like the Olympic Games) which wanted to show its ability to organize an event as a developing country for the events that usually held by western countries. The preparation, organization, and the influence of this event are the subject of a special study to understand the role of this event in the construction of a "world city" and a "Harmonious City" for Shanghai, in the practice of "soft power" strategy for China.Thirdly, the question of the evaluation (material and nonmaterial) of the event are considered from two points of view: Expo 2010 representations raised domestic and overseas; the influence generated by the left elements (pavilion, site, and materials) of this event on China, Shanghai city, as well as on World Expos. The final note seeks the future influence of the construction of the World Expo Museum and the experience of holding international expositions, which could be a permanent engine of China’s “soft power” strategy

The objective of the present work is to study the feasibility of subsequent utilization of the Taiwan Exposition site for international convention and exhibition. To this end, data collection and analyses, and case studies, together with expert interview, are employed as the main research strategy. Ever since the first World Expo’ held in 1851, the idea of holding a World Expo’ has been evolving from advocating national power to drawing people’s attention to our living environment. To prevent from poor land use and waste of natural resources, the importance of subsequent utilization of the World Expo’ site has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Quite a few countries have attempted in transforming the site and space of the World Expo’ into those of international convention and exhibition. One of the most successful examples is the 2000 Hanover Expo’. According to our study, subsequent use of the World Expo’ site for international convention and exhibition not only has high economic worth but also is cost effective. In view of the fact that inbound tourism and convention and exhibition industry are promoted by the government, and the economics, in particular, the service industry, is well developed, Taiwan, located as a transportation and trade hub, does have the suitable conditions for this subsequent utilization scheme. On the other hand, the lack of infrastructure, qualified professionals in specific fields, and the experience in holding a World Expo, and internationalization insufficiency make the job of holding a World Expo in Taiwan a challenge. From the viewpoint of strategic planning, it is feasible to transforming a World Expo site into that for an international convention and exhibition. Practically, such a scheme requires careful assessment and preparation, some of which, as a result of the present work, are summarized as follows: (1) To successfully hold a World Expo in Taiwan, the first in the priority list is to recruit professionals and to stimulate public enthusiasm for holding a World Expo so that proper planning and preparation for holding a World Expo becomes possible. (2) To evaluate the subsequent utilization of the World Expo site, one needs to estimate the cost for exposition site development, to promote the involvement of public and enterprise, and the incorporation of domestic features into the main theme of the World Expo. (3) For the sake of successfully transforming the World Expo site into that for international convention and exhibition, the associated infrastructure must be well developed and the peripheral industry grows stably whereas the operation can be directed toward compounding operation. Due to the difficulty in data collection and lack of examples to be analyzed, the present work may not be complete. However, the results obtained and the conclusions drawn can provide guidelines for those who are interested in organizing large-scale expositions.

Under the circumstance of severe fund shortage of local governments in Taiwan, an exhibition pavilion’s commitment to inheriting and passing down diverse cultures and the exhibition pavilion’s business performance grows more important. This study utilizes the balanced scorecard concept, as proposed by Kaplan and Norton, reviews relevant literature, uses the Delphi method to gather and systemize opinions of experts in related fields, and designs the “criteria for evaluating the performance of the World Expo Taiwan Pavilion”, which have 19 criteria in four dimensions. Furthermore, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is performed to calculate the “relative importance of the criteria for evaluating the performance of the World Expo Taiwan pavilion” in order to rate its operations strategies in planning, forecasting, making judgments, distributing resources, and determining investment portfolios. The results suggest that the relative importance of the four dimensions of evaluation criteria in descending order are: financial management (36%), customer service (34%), internal operations (20%), and learning and growth (10%). In terms of the relative importance of the 19 evaluation criteria, criteria with the highest relative importance are: annual budget allocation planning (33%), a hygienic and safe environment (40%), reduced operational issues (40%), and enhancing employees’ foreign language skills (25%). In conclusion, business operations in the World Expo Taiwan Pavilion should prioritize financial management, improve its various facilities, and provide better customer services in order to have better customer satisfaction.

In the 1990s, research related to globalization was addressed in bounty. Especially in social sciences, each country was undergoing modulations in response to globalization. The most impetus brought about by globalization upon regional development is the transparency of the development conditions of the region. The region has to encounter broader city competitiveness and challenges in regional development than ever. How to strive for living space along the trendy globalization will be the key topic and challenge for regions while governing the cities in the 21st Century. Regions will have more autonomy to confront the city competitiveness during the globalization, adapt to environmental changes and flexibly and rapidly stipulated policy in space use, and find the most suitable position for future development while optimally modulated. All these will enhance the city competitiveness and help to acquire the competitive edge globally. Event marketing on a large scale, such as national expositions, has become one key strategy for world class cities to compete under the fierce races of globalization among cities. The four world-class cities include London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. These metropolitans normally possess comprehensive infrastructures and facilities, transportation and communication systems, culture and art, educational institutions, nice living conditions and security measures. They are also capable of planning and executing international activities of a large scale, such as comprehensive expositions (sport races, world expositions, professional exhibitions and meetings). Hence, the capability of successfully hosting an international exposition on a large scale has become one indicator of measuring city competitiveness. It also has become a crucial strategy for countries and cities to promote city marketing and uplift celebrity worldwide. Thus, to upgrade to a world-class city, winning over the right to host international expositions on a large scale, such as comprehensive one, or a professional exposition at an international level has become one important strategy for urban development (Mei-Jen Liao, 2009). While constructing the world-class city, how to accelerate the city construction by way of event marketing on a large scale and elevate the city image as well as international visibility, and what are the roles to be played have become the focus of the study. The study case is world Expo Shanghai 2010. In the study, the seven elements that are instrumental to Shanghai for becoming a global city as a result of hosting the world Expo are listed below: 1. Improve the infrastructure of the city and the overall living conditions of the city 2. Have a comprehensive metropolitan transportation system 3. Build up brand-new international commercial areas 4. Build up a global financial center and world trade center: 5. Build up an urban image and culture and enhance the celebrity of the city worldwide 6. Bring about the economic growth of the nation in charge and the city 7. Bring about industrial development and optimize structures in nature

In April 2010, the Shanghai World Expo opened, and its theme was “Better City, Better Life.” China’s hosting of this World Expo is not only an action by a new rising nation, but it also used this opportunity to promote its “soft power.” China also attempted to use this World Expo to demonstrate its strong comprehensive national power. In recent years, China has strengthened its cultural strategic attack, and its diplomatic strategies are active promoted, as Chinese culture has become a tool for China’s cultivation of its national image. This series of actions, along with major reporting by the media, all make China seem as if it has entered the trajectory of globalization, and forged an image of a major cultural nation. It has seemingly exchanged information with other countries, and sought to make friends with the rest of the world. However, an increasing gap between the rich and the poor, serious corruption of officials, and ignoring human rights issues all make China highly sensitive, and has never been resolved or responded to. It is easy to imagine that the truth of China’s emphasis on peace is just to cover up its nature as not peaceful. The usage of communication tools and media can only be seen as one sufficient condition, and there is more than one element in the propaganda behavior that forms national image. Chinese propaganda organization has had major development, with more breakthroughs and innovation in propaganda strategies. It is very important to understand how China integrates, implements, and controls modern communication technology, effective propaganda mechanisms, and propaganda strategy. Keywords: 2010 Shanghai World Expo, soft power, national image, comprehensive national power, propaganda strategy

The growth of service industry is closely related to the economical development. Valuable service can strengthen the competitiveness of the enterprises and raise the live quality. The manufacturing industry also adopts the concept from service industry which often provides intangible service integrated with the tangible products. Basically service needs to follow the trend of development and the consumer demand, and utilize information technology and engineering to increase service quality and customers’ satisfaction. Recently Taiwan have held many international large-scale exhibitions which are value-added service and can be extended to the tourism industry. The convention and exhibition industry can boost service economy. However, the capacity, quality, the level of innovation all are still very difficult to be measured. In this study, we try to adopt the methodology of industrial engineering and system management and the newly developed methods of service science to present a systematic innovation for the convention and exhibition industry. First, service blueprint was used to describe the service delivery process of the convention and exhibition industry and then prescribe the service construct by literature review and survey from the practitioners’ viewpoints. Appling demand correlation matrix which integrates with TRIZ to obtain the innovation principles that make service innovation could be systematic developed for the designated customers. Further, we used world expo as a case study for systematic innovation. Finally, we found that the general servicecape need to be modified in order to represent a specific service sector. We found that the new dimension of service innovation can be obtained by using our newly proposed method integrating QFD and TRIZ. The main contribution of this study is to provide a good reference model of systematic innovation for convention and exhibition industry. Such a model can also be applied to the other related service sectors.

The paper focuses on the Czechoslovak pavilions at the 1967 and 1970 World Expos. Both events took place in the period around 1968, when, however briefly, the Czechoslovak visual arts partially overlapped with the state's cultural policy. The pavilions (especially at Expo 70) also reflected the socio- political contexts of the year 1968.. In Czechoslovakia towards the end of the 1960s, the purpose of "exhibitioning" - i.e., the state-sponsored exhibition trade - was to communicate with the public and to (re)present the country abroad. Its main goal was to promote and spread the ruling ideology. On the other hand, the Czechoslovak visual arts scene was beginning to consciously work with the medium of the exhibition as a comprehensively composed unit, either through innovative exhibition design and installation or through installation art. While the exhibition trade reached its high point in the 1960s and began to disintegrate into rigid mannerism towards the end of the decade, real experiments with the format of the art exhibition were just beginning. This study focuses on the question of how these two fields (art and the exhibition trade) approached the medium of the exhibition in the 1960s. I study the Czechoslovak pavilions as a cultural artifact in which aesthetic, social, political, and economic forces...

Destination image is an important variable in the prediction of consumers’ travel intention. However, existing researches of destination image model have not been validated in various “short-stay” destinations thoroughly. This study uses Taiwan Center of World Expo at Hsinchu as a case to investigate the validity of a destination image model. Our results suggest that two anomalies are emerged: (1) the inclusion of affect image totally eliminates the explanation power of cognitive image on travel intention; (2) the inclusion of overall image does not totally eliminate the explanation power of affect image on travel intention. Our statistical analysis also suggests that cognitive and affect image can explain 50% of overall image only. The implications of these findings in theory and practice are provided.

The 21st century appears in its complexity as an interdependent world in which the cities are playing a very important role for cultural exchange and economic development. From the beginning of the19th century in Europe, there was a great need for the leading empires to open to the world in a way in which the cities can become international and therefore develop a more sophisticated, rich and powerful culture that enables the citizens to achieve a better experience of life and play a significant role in the global scenario. The world expositions appeared to be a platform of the cities where the mechanism used to modernize, homogenize and coordinate the practices and discourses of the states get to be universalized by education and institutionalisation. The “Bureau International des Expositions” (BIE) played a significant role in this process in which the cities transformed into cultural scenarios in which thousands of people from every corner of the world come to visit and exchange their culture by representing their own national identity, cultural products and ideas. This research wants to demonstrate the importance of the educational role played by the world expos in the “civilizing process”, in which they have been shaping, building and rebuilding the cities and transforming human lives with the aids of science, arts and technology. Furthermore, the purpose is to show how the world expos themes, discourses and practices may have the solutions to the most challenging needs of civilization in the global era by the participation of the growing number of states in which the cities appear to be the human destiny despite the struggles of power and the social and economic differences that have divided the world. The Expo Shanghai 2010 and its theme “Better City, Better Life” will be presented as the best example on how the coordinated efforts of the states in the head of the BIE are working on the solutions of the problems that affect the cities since the urban sustainable development is one of the biggest challenges in a world threaten by global warming, economic and political conflicts.

In this paper, the Global City theory point of view to explain the Shanghai Government at the present stage of policy planning, and analysis of the construction of Yang shan Port and Shanghai World Expo will be held strategic implications, and then dealt with in the Global City of Shanghai in the theory of specificity, and to Shanghai construction of a Global city to do an assessment. Shanghai in the 90s put forward the "four centers" as the strategic objectives of urban development, I believe that the construction of Shanghai Yang shan port is the main strategy of the meaning and shipping center is conducive to the promotion of economic, financial and trade center built, and the Yang shan port is a shipping center, the core project, the importance of that in here. In addition, the construction of Yang shan Port will enhance the international competitiveness of Shanghai, so that Shanghai become the world''s shipping lines an important node in the network. But I also believe that the Yang shan Port is currently in the clearance capacity of the port, loading and unloading capacity management, there is still room for improvement. Finally, and for the inadequacy of the Yang shan Port existing recommendations. Shanghai World Expo will be the meaning of the strategy was, through the World Expo will be held along Huangpu district can place a substantial transformation, switching to an integrated service-oriented mode of production, enhance urban functions level, while supporting urban infrastructure construction, such as airport expansion, construction of urban rail transport network, will advance the progress of urban modernization. The World Expo will also bring considerable revenue related industries, in addition, the World Expo is a world-class major events, but also an important city of international marketing arena, the World Expo in Shanghai will be very far-reaching impact. Yang shan Port and the World Expo in Shanghai is to build the contribution of Global Cities to meet the Global City, "the basic operating platform," the establishment, but the measure of the Global Cities indicators, the most important of the 500 largest multinational companies operating in number and the number of foreign banks in Shanghai New York, London, Tokyo In contrast, there is still room for growth, meaning that Shanghai is now in the Global City is more lack of transnational economic control, it is still not known as the "Global City."

This diploma thesis deals with the national presentation of the Czech Republic at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai in terms of mythology, symbols, signs and codes. It describes the history of the World Exhibitions, attempts to highlight Czechoslovak achievements and on the basis of that to define key points of successful communication for an international, predominately Chinese audience. By comparing information on traditional Chinese symbols and values with that of Czech explains correlations between Czech and Chinese culture. This can help visitors from China identify with the Czech Republic. A mythological analysis is executed examining the exterior of the Czech pavilion, the exhibition inside, and notes narrative structures of individual exhibits and how they work to provide the preferred interpretation. Part of the overall analysis includes an overview of supporting events, which also help to strengthen the perception of Czech Republic to visitors. The information gleaned is used to summarize learnings that could be useful for the upcoming EXPO in Milan in 2015.

In the 21st century, globalization increases the competitions among cities. The urban development also becomes an important symbol of a country’s power. Many cities are active to seek and develop the potential local resources. In addition, they shape the city’s images to build infrastructure and improve the living functions. Also, they adopt “marketing” to get better reputation and more popularity that make the city to win some focus and attract foreign investments from worldwide. “City marketing” is a comprehensive framework, which needs to be a subject by integrating all aspects, for instance, political, economic, and cultural... etc. Nowadays, city marketing usually uses “event” (also known as “activity”) to be a marketing method, such as organizing or participating in events, exhibitions, and activities... etc., which may help a city get more focus. In this thesis, the French pavilion in 2010 Shanhai World Expo is the main case. By investigating and analyzing the performance of Paris in the pavilion by the theory of Kotler’s “city marketing”, we discovered the effects on city marketing from this case. As a key of an effective event, we could know how the French pavilion sells Paris’ characteristics.

The Taiwan Pavilion of the last Shanghai Expo was moved to Taiwan and had been operated by the Hsinchu government as a new tourist attraction. Therefore, this study wants to discuss the decision-making meaning of new tourist attraction when tourists visit and the effects to the existed tourist attractions in Hsinchu city. According to tourists’ feedback, the study also examines the problems by both of World-Expo Taiwan Pavilion and existed tourist attraction marketing and the future development direction of the Pavilion. The methods to carry out this study were using the qualitative approach by semi-structured interview. The research finding is that the relationships between new and existed tourist attractions are influenced by tourist characteristics and the exhibition content of pavilion. In the tourist characteristics respect, tourists arranged through travel agencies that the existed tourist attractions were excluded caused of low freshness, past bad impression, other more attractive attractions, and limited travel time. In comparison with arranged through family and friends planning, the tourists likely visit existed tourist attractions because of the recommendation what were affected by the planners’ travel preferences, whether been before, whether able to eat and the collected information. Although tourists by public transportation were not convenience to move than the self-driver but they would choose tourist attractions near transportation nodes or on the free shuttle bus route. If tourists from far places had more time to travel, they were likely to visit the existed tourist attractions; in contrast, tourists from near places were easy to visit Hsinchu, maybe they did not visit the pavilion and the existed tourist attractions at the same time. In the exhibition content of pavilion respect, nothing promoted the visits connection to the existed tourist attractions except the local food. The insufficient information about the marketing issue by the pavilion website, and straitened public transportation including city buses and free shuttle bus became the constraints between new and existed tourist attractions. In the pavilion to drive Hsinchu future development respect, some tourists were pessimistic because of pavilion remote locations, the heavy commercial atmosphere, then they will to not travel again; but some tourists were optimistic because of the possible integration of tourism resources in Hsinchu, they thought it could promote the development of Hsinchu city tourism.

Between the Coincidence and the Divergence: the Portuguese World Exhibition and the Expo ’98 establishes a comparative analyses between two exhibitions carried out in Portugal, exploring the idea of politicized architecture as a propagandistic manifestation. Thereby, the events are addressed considering their historical and political conjuncture but, also, their urban presence and architectonic materialization, seeking to understand how can an ideological speech be translated in space. Despite the intense transformations that happened in the Portuguese society - from autocracy to democracy, from imperialism to europeism - it is not intended to draw an evolutionary path, a historical narrative that understands history in a diachronic sense of cause and effect. On the contrary, it is intended to confront, by comparison, two non-coeval events understood as protagonists of two periods of the Portuguese contemporary history. Therefore, the temporal framework is polarized, without excluding exceptions and interceptions, by the opening years of the Exhibitions – 1940 and 1998 – and having as a hinge the year of the April’s Revolution, 1974. Thereby, the paper’s organization does not tend to provide a chronologic reading of the events but a thematic one, subordinated to the compared issues. According to a logic that goes from the general to the specific, the paper consists of 4 chapters, covering the Theme, the Historical context, the Precinct and the Ideology and work of the exhibitions. As a stimulus to a critical reflection and uncompromised from biased views, it is argued that the events relate between the similarity and the difference, seeking to deconstruct a dialectical logic that antagonizes them and a manichean view to which the common sense can reduce them.

Temporary venues, or ad-hoc venues, are common delivery media in modern society as the messages of organizers are delivered via two aspects: main venue and theme presentation. An ad-hoc venue provides visitors information including the purpose of the exhibition, its background, features and cultural implications, feeding visitors knowledge. In recent years, visitor demand has been beyond browsing over displays. Rather, allowing experience and interaction can give visitors a stronger impression and a fuller understanding of exhibition. Temporary venues, with story-like and entertaining packages, create a specific experience and journey at a given time, offer visitors a series of memorable moments, and deliver the messages of organizer through complete performances. The theme of 2010 Shanghai World Expo was “Better City, Better Life”, for which participating countries contributed their respective ideas and visions for urban life. Unlike most other countries that chose to dedicate different design strategies to main architecture and indoor presentation, the Denmark pavilion incorporated both, comprehensively. This research works on the presentation of creativity and experience strategy for exploration in outdoors and indoor areas of a venue. The Denmark pavilion at 2010 Shanghai World Expo successfully deconstructed the urban elements of Copenhagen, and impressed visitors profoundly with features of the city. Unlimited imagination and infinite understanding were unleashed given limited space, limited time and limited resources. This is a critical element that most temporary venues lack at the present. This research focuses on analyzing presentation of creativity and experience strategy in Denmark pavilion, and renders an overall comparison with other pavilions. By identifying how Denmark pavilion incorporated the creativity and urban element of its cities into the temporary venue, the research reveals how impression and recognition are built. The findings and conclusions are expected to be future reference.

v AJ The world exhibition in Brussels in 1958 marked an important event in the history of the Czechoslovakian totalitarian art history. Until today it is still a reminder of the high quality art handicraft, design and multimedia formation. In the atmosphere of the Cold war the EXPO 58 became a symbolical clash of the capitalist and socialist principles of government and a comparison of skills and abilities of their representatives (US and USSR). The attention of the visitors and the media surprisingly concentrated on the Czechoslovakian exposition, which apart from the traditional products presented also some new initiations in artistic and technological branches and contributed to the establishment of the so called Brussels life style. It was the Czechoslovakian success which helped the media to use the mechanisms of propaganda. Using three daily newspaper and two weekly magazines this work is trying to capture how was the Czechoslovakian participation showed to the public and what features of propaganda were used.
