The present study was conducted to evaluate perceptions of the importance of various factors that may determine the wage or salary level in jobs. Items describing various job characteristics reflecting the factors of Skill, Effort, Responsibility, Working Conditions, and Organizational characteristics were rated by 510 subjects from a variety of organizations. Results indicated that the items did not cluster into the five categories noted above. Instead, three factors were identified and labeled Job Complexity, Accountability, and Work Context. There were few gender or occupational differences in the ratings of the items. The implications of the results for the development of equitable wage and salary systems are discussed.

In the December of my Senior year, my old piano teacher died. Old not in the sense of age, because he was really quite young (in general, but specifically to die), but in the sense that I took lessons from him when I was a kid and young adult (how I despise that term), and hadn't spoken with him, at least not at length, in years. Standing at his wake-only the second I'd been to in my life and the first that was more than a small room of silent people and the acrid smell of lilies-I found myself, awkwardly, taking notes. The colors of the wall, the kids running around, the food, the music, the speeches-I knew I would write a poem about it there was so much to communicate about the experience of finding Tim, learning from him, and then losing him. Too much irony and beauty, tragedy and honesty. Too much love and loss. So I took notes on a piece of paper with lyrics to "Hallelujah" on it, borrowing a pen from my high school best friend. The paper sat next to my computer for a couple of weeks, and then it sat in a pile of papers on my desk for a few more. Then a pile of papers and magazines and readings on my floor, by my desk. Then a mass of rubbage on the floor, in the corner of my room. Then covered over by clothing and other unfinished business. And though I literally buried the physical evidence, the words on the paper swarmed through my head, never coalescing into an image, a poem. Though my original thoughts were on the paper, the true words never came to me. Despite my notes, despite my unceasing emotion, I couldn't find a way to express what it all meant to me. I tried. Many times in thought, and four times on paper. Four distinct poems came out-all with repeated elements that signal to me what I find most extraordinary in the experience. Yet I was not able to sit back and say, "This is it. This is my poem for Tim. This does him justice, does me justice." I think, sometimes, the words exist in a puddle, but cannot be gathered together. And pressures such as a deadline of, say, a thesis, force us to make something of the muck. But when it comes down to it, even after writing my 4th poem on this same experience, the words just aren't there. Sometimes they just don't come together. This doesn't mean that they won't ever, and it doesn't mean that what I've written is without value.., it just means that I'm not ready to write the poem that I literally ache to get out of me. The good news is that with each attempt I find something new. With my latest (the fourth attempt), a villanelle, I found that more than the color of the walls at the wake or the kids running around the mourners, I am struck by the shear gravity of loss-what it means to unexpectedly lose someone you never thought about losing. What it means to have nothing but a memory of someone. Whether that's what I was ready to discover, or whether the strict form of the villanelle forced me to, I do not know. But I do know that, despite losing the richness of details, there is something very moving, at least to me, about the villanelle's surface-layer simplicity. Perhaps this is my signal that Tim's death meant something more symbolic to me than literal. I'm still not sure. But I am sure that I would like to share this process with you... the process, for me, of figuring out the world and my place in it, via the process of recording my experiences through poetry ...

This paper takes a dive into understanding if funding extra diversity initiatives at Claremont McKenna College currently spurred on by students are worth the cost to the institution. Resources like that of Claremont McKenna’s C.A.R.E. Center (Civility, Access, Resources, and Expression) and funding for representative student organizations place large pressures on the institution’s available budget and there is not much proof that they will pay off in the long-run. In this paper, financial costs for supporting diverse students on campus are aggregated and compared to the possible financial benefits that may come of their consequential use. Results show that there is a largely positive societal benefit to the use of these resources at a fraction of the cost to the institution. These findings derive from CMC cost data; however, results imply similar conclusions across secondary education institutions nationwide.

Similar to their colleagues throughout the world, nurses and midwives in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, welcome evidencebased practice (EBP) as a means to improve patient or client outcomes. This thesis explores the way nurses and midwives understand evidence for EBP and aims to determine whether members of these professions currently have the knowledge and skills necessary to implement evidence‐based care. Three separate studies were conducted to explore NSW nurses’ readiness for EBP. Attitudes, knowledge and skill were investigated using an EBP questionnaire returned by 383 nurses. The views of 23 nursing opinion leaders were elicited during qualitative in‐depth interviews, and their ideas on maximising the potential for future nurses to confidently engage in EBP were explored. Current approaches to teaching EBP in undergraduate nursing programs were investigated by examining documents issued by NSW nursing education providers. The results demonstrate many differences between the ways NSW nurses currently understand evidence for EBP, and a range of approaches to teaching EBP in undergraduate nursing programs. Under current conditions, nurses graduating from universities in NSW commence practice with varying levels of preparation for EBP and enter into a professional arena that is itself struggling to cope with the concepts and language of this approach to improving healthcare. v Evidence for the effectiveness of EBP is slowly accumulating and despite some small positive signs, the collective results of this thesis suggest that current educational approaches are not capable of producing the kind of results that are both necessary and desirable for the promotion of evidence‐based nursing practice in NSW. Articulating a commitment to EBP, using a common language and a consistent approach are among the recommendations made for the future promotion of EBP in nursing education.

This thesis offers possibilities for a new way of thinking about the subject of worth in relation to nursing. Its main purpose is to provide nurses with an opportunity to be reflective and reflexive about the many differing concepts of their own worth and that of the people with whom they work, thus facilitating the potential for new thinking and, in turn, new practices. The research arose from disturbances that emerged from three particular areas: 1) my own self worth evaluation; 2) client stories of being treated with a lack of worth by nurses; and 3) from hearing stories from colleagues about perceptions of self worth in relation to nursing identity. Within this study, I used Evocative Autoethnography, a reflexive methodology where the researcher and the researched are one, simultaneously aware of being both subject and researcher. I paid attention to how I experience myself as a nurse, how nursing appears to be viewed and how my idiosyncratic measures and displays of worth affect interactions with both others and myself. A process of rhizomatic conceptualisation ran alongside, through and around the autoethnographic process.providing a map of the territory and a frame of reference for the research. Within this Evocative Autoethnography the data are my thoughts, memories, reflections and reflexive thinking, 'collected' because of their evocative nature. They were analysed through a process of reflection and reflexion whereby the collection of data and the analysis of those data became an iterative cycle, the data becoming the data analysis becoming the data. The data are represented through multimedia concepts such as narrative prose, poetry and photographs. There is no conclusion to this process, only the point at which the data are no longer captured. Through undertaking the research, I discovered that my experience of self worth varied throughout the different cultures and different selves that I inhabit, and that this had an impact on the ways in which I interacted intra- and inter-personally. Through this iterative process of reflection and reflexion, I found I was sometimes able to influence my intra- and interactions in a helpful way, but sometimes my low self worth unhelpfully influenced the outcomes of my self/other encounters. Gaining insight into my constructions of self worth has provided me with opportunities for intra- and inter-actional changes with implications of more helpful practices. The intention of this research is to provide nurses, and in particular, mental health nurses, with an opportunity to be reflective and reflexive around the concepts of their own value and that of the people with whom they work. 'Hearing' others' stories or narratives is essentially an encounter, where the words of the other can resonate with us, providing us with a chance to not only respond to the words of the 'other' but also to our own responses, thus facilitating iterative 'echoing' or, in other words, 'thinking with the story'. In 'thinking with the story' nurses might discover something new about themselves and/or their practice, which in turn might bring about new ways of considering their self worth and that of others, thus leading to practices which place the value of both nurses and the people with whom they work at the centre of their interactions.

The relationships between various civic virtues and participation in community groups were explored. The present thesis was not an exhaustive integration of theories on Civic Virtue. Rather, it highlighted virtues (i.e., authenticity, moral wisdom, trust, reciprocity and tolerance) selected for their value in educating members of social capital groups toward a broader understanding of the self and others in a deliberative, pluralist democracy. This thesis relied primarily on theories from the disciplines of political philosophy and philosophy of education. Three major conclusions emerged from the present investigation. First, schools are not the only venue in which education for civic virtue occurs. Indeed, social capital groups provide a vital context for civic learning. Second, the existence of diversity within social capital groups enhances the educational potential of participating in civic life. And third, social capital groups can potentially have a socially progressive impact in a liberal, deliberative democracy.
