Résumé :
Abstract Purpose Members of the aaRS (aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase) family are proteins controlling the aminoacylation process, in which YARS (tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase) catalyzes the binding of tyrosine to its cognate tRNA and plays an important role in basic biosynthesis. Several studies have demonstrated the association between YARS mutation and certain developmental abnormalities/diseases, yet YARS’s linkage with cancer remains uncategorized. In this study, by combining in silico, in vitro, and in vivo studies, we explored the expressions and functions of YARS in gastric cancer (GC). Methods We evaluated YARS’s distribution in tumor and paired normal tissues/specimens of GC by referring to large cohort online datasets and patient-derived tissue specimens. YARS-related changes were assessed by phenotypical/molecular experiments and RNA-sequencing analysis in GC cell lines harboring YARS knockdown or overexpression. Results Both the transcript and protein levels of YARS were evidently higher in gastric cancer tissues than in paired normal tissues. YARS knockdown induced repressed proliferation and invasiveness, as well as enhanced apoptosis in GC cell lines, while abnormally upregulating YARS expression promoted gastric cancer growth in vivo. We inferred based on RNA-sequencing that YARS modulates multiple cancerous signaling pathways and proved through cellular experiments that YARS promoted GC progression, as well as homologous recombination by activating PI3K-Akt signaling. Conclusions By revealing the existence of a YARS-PI3K-Akt signaling axis in gastric cancer, we discovered that tRNA synthetase YARS is a novel tumorigenic factor, characterized by its upregulation in tumor-derived specimens, as well as its functions in promoting gastric cancer progression.

Résumé :
Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is frequently diagnosed at late stages when curative treatments are no more appliable. Many studies have proved the active role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in cancers’ biology; here, the functional role of lncRNA NCK1-AS1 in HCC was identified. Methods: Gene expression in tumor tissues of HCC was evaluated by examining online databases and 88 collected HCC samples from our hospital. The interactions of miR-22-3p with NCK1-AS1 and tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (YARS) were tested by conducting bioinformatics analysis, luciferase report, and RNA pulldown experiments. CCK-8, colony formation, flow cytometry, wound healing, transwell experiments were used to dissect the role of the NCK1-AS1/miR-22-3p/YARS axis in HCC.Results: NCK1-AS1 was overexpressed in HCC cells and tissues. Functional assays depicted that depletion of NCK1-AS1 hampered malignant character of HCC cells. NCK1-AS1 controlled the availability of miR-22-3p, resulting in YARS upregulation. YARS was found to have a clinical value for HCC diagnosis. Moreover, rescue experiments revealed that miR-22-3p inhibition or YARS overexpression partially blocked the function of NCK1-AS1 deficiency in HCC cells. As for the downstream signaling pathway, we discovered that NCK1-AS1 activated PI3K/AKT signaling by the miR-22-3p/YARS axis. Conclusion: The present study verified that NCK1-AS1 could promote HCC progression via the miR-22-3p/YARS axis to activate PI3K/AKT signaling.

Résumé :
Canada resettled over 74,000 Syrian refugees since 2015. However, education programs lack awareness needed to successfully promote refugee academic integration. Little research focuses on young adult refugees (YARs) aged out of traditional schools due to asylum displacement and disrupted education, left with adult education schools as their only alternative to complete high school. Drawing upon 29 semi-structured interviews with Syrian YARs in Montreal, findings suggest that this subgroup is unintentionally excluded by educational policy-makers. Although YARs are survivors, their drive was found to be insufficient when confronted with systemic barriers that prevent at-risk students from proceeding smoothly through school to reach their highest potential.

Résumé :
This article reports on the 18-month formative evaluation of a model project aimed at preparing young adult refugees (YARs) for entry into vocational education training (VET) as an essential step toward the labor market. Qualitative methods were used to gain insight into the perspectives of YARs, program staff, and vocational instructors as well as explore program dynamics. Within a longitudinal research design, 45 qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted with 22 of 27 program participants. Additionally, program staff and vocational instructors were interviewed. Qualitative content analysis guided the analytic process. Outcome data indicated that 83.3% of program completers or 55.6% of the program participants entered a VET within the evaluation period. Triangulated qualitative data revealed relevant program processes and generated hypotheses about factors that facilitate or hinder the difficult transition for YARs. Implications for program development as well as needed structural changes are discussed.

Résumé :
40 Background: A complete response to chemotherapy for most cancer patients is, and there are many complications caused by this toxic therapy. Therefore, we sought to determine chemotherapy responses in breast cancer at the proteome level. Methods: Candidate proteins were filtered out by the proteomic-based multiple machine-learning algorithms. Results: The MS analysis of FFPE set yielded 6,069 protein groups. The filtered dataset resulted in 539 proteins with differential abundances. We searched for biological process in the Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis in each proteomic cluster. Several immune responses process, apoptotic process, DNA replication process and aminoacylation for protein translation process primarily were represented in group with complete remission. On the other hand, cell adhesion process, cytoskeleton organization process, vesicle organization process and Golgi organization process represented in breast cancer which showed poor responses to the therapy. The machine learning approaches demonstrated the highest AUC value, 0.978 (sensitivity 1.0 and specificity 0.714) with a combination of 11 proteins. Among them the finally selected tyrosine aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (YARS) showed AUC (AUC = 0.749) in the subsequent steps of verification using immunohistochemistry in 123 patient cohorts. We identified the predictive relevance of YARS. YARS induced tumor necroptosis was greatly enhanced when it was combined synergistically with a combination of SMAC mimetics and a BCL2 inhibitor. Conclusions: This suggested that YARS expression could serve as a new therapeutic target for improving the clinical benefits of chemotherapy.

Résumé :
A technique based on the semantic differential method of attitude measurement was developed for use with consumers. Using semantic grids derived from consumer preferences, some twenty bipolar attributes pertaining to tactile qualities were evaluated for hand knitting yarns in the ball and fabric states. The yarns and the resultant fabrics used in the evaluations represent six styles of commercially marketed hand knitting yarns. Using consumer concepts of the “ideal” yarn or fabric, commercially available products may be assessed for their worth and market potential. Results indicate a significant consumer preference for yarns containing a small percentage of specialty hair fiber, pure wool, or wool rich blends. Furthermore, responses to yarns in the ball state and the fabric state differ markedly in some instances, indicating that at the point of purchase, initial impressions may prejudice purchasing decisions. From objective measures of yarn and fabric compressional properties and yarn bending properties correlated with the subjective data, a complete picture of the samples under investigation emerges. The results indicate that certain of the bipolar attributes correlate significantly with the objective measurements. This indicates that the human hand is able to detect small mechanical deformations in yams and fabrics and to label these with language constructs, thereby recognizably and meaningfully identifying characteristics of fabric hand.

Résumé :
It will be argued in this article that the EU Recommendation on common principles for collective redress might have limited impact on the field of competition law due to: several uncertainties regarding the legal standing in class actions; difficulties in their funding; and the risk of forum shopping with cross-border actions. Nevertheless, Belgium and Great Britain have recently introduced class actions into their national legal systems and addressed some of the difficulties which other Member States were experiencing already. It will also be suggested that the Portuguese model – the ‘Popular Action’ – and recent Portuguese practice may be considered an interesting example to follow in order to overcome some of the identified obstacles to private antitrust enforcement.

Coquelet, Hugo. « Expression hétérogène des ARNt et fonctions non canoniques de la tyrosyl-ARNt synthétase (YARS) dans la régulation de la sénescence chimio-induite et son échappement ». Electronic Thesis or Diss., Angers, 2025. http://www.theses.fr/2025ANGE0005.

Senescence is a physiological process triggered in response to various stressors, such as telomeric erosion, oncogene expression, or exposure to chemotherapy treatments. Its implementation halts the proliferation of a transformed cell population, thereby limiting tumor development. However, this proliferative arrest is sometimes reversible, allowing certain cells to escape senescence and acquire additional tumorigenic capabilities. In this context, senescence is considered a mechanism that may potentiate cancer development. In this work, we aimed to better understand and characterize the mechanisms regulating senescence and its stability. First, we studied the regulation of RNA polymerase III by the mTORC1 protein as well as the specific expression of certain tRNAs, notably Tyr-GTA (5.3) and Leu-CAA (2.1). This heterogeneous regulation of certain tRNAs may reflect a broader reorganization of the tRNA pool during senescence, thereby influencing protein synthesis to either support or destabilize this phenotype. Subsequently, we characterized novel non-canonical functions of tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (YARS). This enzyme migrates to the nucleus and regulates RNA polymerase II activity to control the transcription of the LIN9 gene, a key cell cycle regulator. Blocking this non-canonical function is sufficient to induce a senescent phenotype, suggesting the involvement of YARS in establishing this suppressive mechanism. Thus, senescence is characterized by the involvement of numerous translation effectors—a process still poorly studied in this context—that could represent a key point in understanding the mechanisms influencing its establishment and stability

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Yarn hairiness affects not only the quality of products, but also the productivity in spinning and weaving. Too much yarn hairiness is undesirable for many end uses as well as the spinning and post spinning processes. The main aims of this project are to examine the hairiness features of various yarns and to reduce yarn hairiness. The thesis covers five related areas – hairiness assessment, factors affecting yarn hairiness, the hairiness of newly developed yarns, yarn hairiness reduction, and effect of yarn hairiness on the energy consumption in ring spinning. The worsted cashmere, pure wool and wool/cashmere blend yarns were employed to investigate the effect of some fibre parameters on the yarn hairiness. A single exponential distribution of the hair-length was confirmed first, using the data from the Zweigle G565 Hairiness Meter. A linear relationship was observed between the blend ratio and the hairiness indexes. In particular, the effect of fibre crimp or curvature on yarn hairiness is examined. The theory of yarn hairiness composition was also developed further. The effect of draft ratio and spindle speed on the hairiness of worsted wool yarn was examined next with a factorial experiment design. Several new hairiness indexes, namely the relative hairiness indexes, have been used to explain the results obtained. In the investigation of the hairiness of newly developed yarns, the hairiness of the Compact Spun and Roller-Jet-Spun yarns was examined first. The composition of the yarn hairiness, the hair-length distribution, and the effect of test speed on yarn hairiness were then studied. An important finding is that for both yarns, the predominant hairiness feature is the looped hairs. A comparison of the hairiness of Solospun yarns and the equivalent ring spun wool yarns was undertaken. The hair-length distribution of the Solospun yarn was examined first. The Solospun yarns used had fewer hairs in most hair-length groups and lower variations in hairiness. In addition, the effect of twist level and spindle speed on the hairiness of Solospun and conventional ring spun yarns has also been discussed. A novel approach of reducing yarn hairiness – spinning with a ‘Diagonal’ yarn path was examined next. Both ‘Left Diagonal’ and ‘Right Diagonal’ yarn arrangements were studied. A new finding is that the ‘Right Diagonal’ yarn path leads to reduced hairiness for the Z-twist yarn, while yarn evenness and tenacity are not as sensitive to the modified yarn path. The mechanism of hairiness reduction with the ‘Diagonal’ yarn path has been discussed. The spinning performance of “Right Diagonal” yarn arrangement has also been evaluated. Finally, the effect of yarn hairiness on the energy consumption in ring spinning has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. A theoretical model has been developed, which represents the first attempt at theoretically investigating the influence of yarn hairiness on energy consumption during the winding stage of ring spinning. The experimental results have generally confirmed predictions of this model. Recommendations for further research in this area have also been made in the concluding chapter of this thesis.

Résumé :
In recent years, there has been a rising demand for IT solutions that are capable to handle vast amount of data. Hadoop became the de facto software framework for distributed storage and distributed processing of huge datasets with a high pace. YARN is the resource management layer for Hadoop ecosystem which decouples the programming model from the resource management mechanism. Although Hadoop and YARN create a powerful ecosystem which provides scalability and flexibility, launching applications with YARN currently requires intimate knowledge of YARN’s inner workings. This thesis focuses on designing and developing support for a human-friendly YARN application launching environmen twhere the system takes responsibility for allocating resources to applications. This novel idea will simplify the launching process of an application and it will give the opportunity to inexperienced users to run applications over Hadoop.

AbstractDuring a multi-sited ethnographic research on responses towards the presence of refugees from abroad in Indonesia, I brought along my knitting needles and five colours of yarn. Knitting was an effective outlet to manage the emotions and anxieties of fieldwork. The chapter documents my fieldwork experiences through a knitting project that would use colours to “code” my feelings on a weekly basis. The chapter explores how arts and crafts are used as metaphors to capture the intuitive and emotional dimensions of academia that are often missing from research methodology teaching. The coloured yarns have now been knitted into a striped cloth “scarf” representing the emotional labour of doing research that is partial to fieldwork but often excluded from its retelling.

Résumé :
Abstract Recently, demands for full or local application of a Si-based, non-stick type Foul Release (FR) coating for commercial tankers increased emphasizing FR coating’s contribution to ship’s fuel efficiency. Coating application of the new FR coating in new shipbuilding dock, however, proposes several, formidable challenges to be overcome due to the unique characteristics of the coating materials. Most ship yards have yet to figure out how to apply these new breed of coatings successfully. In this study, technical guidelines to improve spray coating application - both airless and air assisted airless spray - are proposed based on actual ship yard experiences. A new method for measuring the cured coating’s adhesion strength for the “non-sticking” surface was also proposed. Other technical issues, such as repair coating of local, mechanical damage, spray dust, fish eye, spray tail phenomena in low temperature regime, were also discussed.

Résumé :
Abstract Surface tolerant, good chemical resistance, ultra high solids, low specific gravity, excellent mechanical properties, application friendly, IMO(1)/PSPC approved for ballast tanks. All these features combined offer an innovative solution as tank lining and as a universal primer for several areas in the Marine and Oil & Gas industry, for new construction and/or maintenance and repair situations. In new construction scenarios the fabrication yards are looking to using hydro blast as a cost efficient method for secondary surface preparation as it reduces salt contamination and because of environmental reasons such as disposal of abrasive waste and health issues. Reduced VOC and no dew point restrictions greatly assist yard productivity. In maintenance and repair scenarios, the current assets can easily apply this new technology by brush, roller and equipment as conventional spray or airless spray with minimum surface preparation requirements. All these benefits are achieved with an ultra-high solids epoxy with special fillers which are giving extremely good corrosion and mechanical performance. This Technical Paper will describe and cover the main features of this new technology together with extensive testing documentation done for this new generation ultra-high solids surface tolerant tank lining.

Résumé :
The bottle-neck issues to resolve for numerical simulation of real scale ballistic tests of fabric body armors are computer capacity limitation and prohibitive computational cost. It is not realistic to use micro-level computer simulations for an open end design process. Most numerical simulations are only applicable for small scale parametric analyses, which could facilitate apprehension of fabric failure mechanisms during ballistic impact, but not applicable for the design process. In this paper, a sub-yarn model, the digital element approach, is applied to simulate real scale ballistic tests for soft body armors. In this approach, a yarn is discretized into multiple digital fibers and each fiber is discretized into many digital elements. In order to improve efficiency, two hybrid element mesh concepts are investigated: area based hybrid mesh and yarn based hybrid mesh. The area based hybrid mesh procedure is similar to one utilized in the conventional finite element approach. A fine element mesh is adopted in the area near the impact center; a course element mesh in the area far away. However, numerical simulation results show that the stress wave travels along the principal yarns at the speed of sound immediately after ballistic impact. High yarn stress develops quickly from the impact center to a distance along the principal yarn. As such, the area based hybrid mesh approach fails to obtain improved computer efficiency without loss of accuracy. Because the high stress only develops within principal yarns after a ballistic impact, a yarn based hybrid element mesh procedure is adopted. In this procedure, only principal yarns and yarns near principal yarns are discretized into fine digital fibers; other yarns are discretized into coarse digital fibers. Because only a few principal yarns resist load in a typical ballistic impact, the yarn based hybrid technique could improve simulation efficiency up to 90–95% without sacrificing accuracy. A numerical tool is then developed to generate fabric with a yarn based hybrid mesh. Accuracy of the approach is analyzed. The hybrid mesh technique is applied to simulate real scale ballistic tests of ballistic armors made of 4 to 20 piles of 2-D plain woven fabrics. Numerical results are compared to real scale standard ballistic results.

Résumé :
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are believed to add beneficial damping to fiber reinforced polymer composites on account of their weak, reversible inter-wall bonding and CNT/polymer bonding. An effective way to add a large volume fraction of CNTs to a fiber composite is to form the CNTs into condensed yarns and add the yarns to the interlayer regions of composites with the CNTs oriented along the primary loading direction. To address the ongoing need for additional data on the damping provided to fiber composites by CNT yarns, the current investigation focuses on the tensile damping behavior of a commercially available yarn with and without epoxy impregnation. Based on quasi-static tensile tests using cross-sectional areas measured by ethanol immersion testing, dry yarn was observed to have an elastic modulus of 109 GPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 1.30 GPa, while impregnated yarn had a modulus of 62 GPa and a strength of 0.813 GPa. Dry and impregnated yarns exhibited a ratcheting mechanism, where permanent strain is accumulated with repeated load cycling. Through dynamic mechanical analysis, it was shown that both dry and impregnated yarns exhibited high damping, with average initial loss factors of 0.110 and 0.0953, respectively. With continued cycling and increased strain, the storage modulus of impregnated yarns increased by 450%, while the loss modulus increased by 256% and the loss factor decreased by 35%. Dry and impregnated yarns exhibited quasi-static and dynamic properties that were highly sensitive to loading history, although impregnated yarns showed greater degrees of change over larger numbers of loading cycles. It is shown that an established micromechanical model can predict to within 6% the loss factor of a [90]6 hybrid carbon/epoxy laminate containing 10 vol% CNT yarns aligned in the 0° orientation, based on known dynamic properties of the impregnated yarn and the baseline laminate without CNTs.

Résumé :
The effect of natural rubber (NR) coating on the quasi-static tensile properties of unidirectional Dyneema® SK-76 single yarn is experimentally studied. Single Dyneema® SK-76 yarns are uniformly coated with pre-vulcanized natural rubber latex. Quasi-static tensile tests are performed on plain (uncoated) and NR-coated samples at the strain rates of 0.006 s−1, 0.06 s−1 and 0.6 s−1. The force and strain at peak, and the tenacity of the plain and NR-coated yarns are obtained for each strain rate. The results show that the peak force in the plain samples increases with strain rate to a maximum of 163 N. The tenacity (breaking force per denier) of the uncoated yarns also, in correspondence, increases with strain rate. In contrast, the tenacity of the NR-coated samples remained constant at but a lower value than that of the plain samples. It is observed that peak force sustained by the NR-coated yarns is insensitive to strain rate and up to 560% higher than that supported by the plain yarns. The peak strain of both the plain and NR-coated samples varies with strain rate in a comparable fashion. However, the peak strain values of the NR-coated yarn are greater by an average of 20% than of the plain yarn. The experimental data thus reveal that NR coating has a constructive effect on the peak force and peak strain of the yarn but decreases its tenacity to a constant value. Micrographs of the fractured samples obtained from Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope are studied to explore the role of NR in the failure mechanism of the coated yarn.

Résumé :
The mechanical properties of hybrid yarns containing elastomeric component are rather difficult to measure. A standard approach to measuring tenacity and elongation cannot be applied to this type of yarn. The main reason is the high elasticity of both elastane and textured filaments. An attempt was made in this study to solve the problem by measuring the mechanical properties of textured filament/elastane hybrid yarns under pretension force which is higher than standard ones. Several pretension forces were applied: 1.5 cN, 4.5 cN, 7.5 cN, 10.5 cN and 13.5 cN. Textured polyamide 6.6 was used as a spirally covering filament, while the core yarn was LYCRA® elastomeric yarn with various linear densities. The results indicated that with an increase in the pretension force, the elongation of the polyamide/ LYCRA® hybrid yarns decreased whereas, the pretension forces had little effect on the tenacity values for investigated samples. These preliminary results are promising, however, the method must be further developed to be ultimately applicable to all complex yarns containing elastomer filament.

Résumé :
A comparative experimental study on tensile properties of three types of high-performance polymeric fiber yarns — AuTx™, Kevlar® KM2 600 denier and Twaron® 500 denier — is conducted. Tensile tests are performed on samples of the three kinds of fiber yarns at five testing temperatures (24, 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C) and three loading rates (100, 200 and 300 mm/min). The elastic modulus, breaking stress, and breaking strain are obtained for each type of fiber yarns under specified testing conditions as averages of measured values from 15 specimens. The experimental data reveal that the tensile properties of all three types of fiber yarns under investigation exhibit strong temperature dependence, with the elastic modulus and breaking stress decreasing with the temperature increase. However, the dependency of the properties on the loading rate is insignificant for the range considered. The measured tensile properties of the Kevlar® and Twaron® yarns are seen to be close, while the elastic modulus and breaking stress of the AuTx™ yarn are found to be, respectively, about 12% and 40% higher than those of the Kevlar® and Twaron® fiber yarns. It is also observed that the AuTx™ yarn degrades about two times faster than the other two yarns as temperature increases.

Résumé :
In order to improve the mechanical properties of weft knitted fabric, straight yarns both in weft and warp directions can be integrated. These types of reinforcements are called biaxial weft knitted structures. Biaxial weft knitted fabrics include weft and warp yarn layers, which are held together by a stitching yarn system. Reinforcing yarns, e.g. glass or aramid fibers, can be used within all yarn systems. They provide necessary strength and stiffness of the fabric [1]. The present work concentrates on the mechanical properties of biaxial weft knitted composites. Mainly the effect of stitch yarn type such as aramid, glass and nylon and biaxial, warp and weft, yarn type such as aramid and glass were investigated. Six plies composite panels were fabricated by hand lay-up lamination method. Volume fraction (Vf) of all composites were kept constant. After production of composites, bending and impact tests had been conducted. GF-GF-NY composites exhibited superior flexural property than other tested composites. It was found that GF-GF-AR composites have higher impact properties (total energy and maximum load) than other tested composites. Better mechanical properties can be achieved by using aramid stitch yarn with combination glass warp and glass weft yarns. A better interfacial bonding of aramid stitch yarn seemed to be cause of this result. After impact test, fracture aspects of reverse side of weft knitted composites were analyzed. The crack propagation was explained by visual inspection. Moreover, impact damage for tested materials was evaluated by cross-sectional observations. For the better understanding of the fracture behavior, schematic drawings of all kind of specimens were drawn. To analyze the damage behavior of tested specimens, the damage lengths were measured. By this observation, the tendency between impact energy and crack length was showed.

Résumé :
For many years and decades, the need for a memorial center at the Babyn Yar ravine in Kyiv has been discussed. On September 29-30, 1941, Nazi German Sonderkommando forces and local collaborators had murdered 33,771 Jews in the ravine. In 2016, the Ukrainian government announced together with an International Supervisory Board its intention to create an official Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center (BYHMC) on the grounds of the massacre. Since then, the political and historiographical mandate, the building, the historical narrative and the artistic concept to be developed, as well as the future Center's scholarly and artistic staff have been hotly disputed. Russia's aggression against Ukraine since 2014 and even more so Russia's war against Ukraine in February 2022, which included repeated air strikes on Ukraine's capital, made the further development and operation of the BYHMC difficult and partly impossible, last but not least for all practical purposes. The Center was officially founded and began its operations at the eightieth anniversary of the Babyn Yar massacre in September 2021. However, the memorial complex itself still had to be built. The present translation of an article by Shimon Briman analyzes a particular debate that surrounded the development plans for the memorial project in Kyiv at that time. The author sheds light on how the initially envisaged financial involvement of Russian businessmen in the project, whose relatives include Ukrainian-Jewish Holocaust victims, caused the ongoing debate to become much more complex and heated against the backdrop of Russia's intention and actions to destroy Ukraine as an independent state. The original Russian-language article was first published in 2020 as "Voyny, demony i ambitsii Babyego yara" in the Russian Jewish magazine "Evreyskiy zhurnal" (Jewish Magazine) 6/5782 (15 May 2020), pp. 20-29, online accessible at: https://jewishmagazine.ru/articles/community/voyny-demony- i-ambitsii-babego-yara/ (last accessed 15 December 2024). Shimon Briman is a Ukrainian-Israeli historian and journalist. He currently serves as head of the East European Desk at the University of Haifa, Israel. The article was translated in 2020 and edited in 2024 by Nicolas Dreyer, Institute of Slavic Studies, Otto Friedrich University, Bamberg, Germany. A retrospective reading in 2024 necessitated an adaptation of the tenses employed in the original essay.

Résumé :
The economic assessment of piping layout in compressor station yards relies on accurate prediction of pressure losses within the network. Methods currently used to predict pressure losses in station pipe work are unreliable. As a result inadequate and inaccurate information is being used when making economic assessments of piping layout and in the prediction of operating costs. By improving the design process substantial economic advantages may be gained in balancing pressure losses and compressor inlet flow conditions against investment in piping and components. Currently the existing data concentrate on isolated component losses and there is a lack of reliable data on interaction of adjacent components frequently present in compressor yard layouts. Thus, in order to produce a comprehensive guide to compressor yard losses, there was considerable incentive to quantify these interactions. This report details the experimental work to provide reliable pressure loss data for an engineer's design handbook. The tee tests include the effect of branch to run radius and two area ratios. A total of 36 bend/tee combinations were tested. Results are presented as overall bend/tee pressure loss coefficients and interaction corrections. The latter are used in the design handbook. The factors affecting bend and tee performance are discussed. Bend/tee interactions are explained qualitatively in terms of interaction of the pressure and flow distributions within the components. The work covers pressure losses in bends, close coupled bend/bend combinations, tees (combining and dividing) and tee/bend combinations.

Résumé :
In this study, carbon/polyamide 6 staple fiber yarns were heated above the melting temperature of the polymer in a modified impregnation and calendaring process using two hot air blowers, stretched to align the fibers in the yarns, and formed into tapes. Tapes were produced at different process temperatures and the influences on the degree of consolidation and the thermal properties of the tapes were characterized. While improved impregnation quality can be achieved at higher temperatures, a decrease in the crystallization peak temperature of the impregnated tape was observed, indicating thermal degradation.
