Nicholson, Diana Jayne. "Knowing "knowledge": explorations with youth and other thinking friends." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7014.

Résumé :
This thesis sketches my foray into an inquiry with youth; an inquiry which aimed to inquire into beliefs about “knowledge” while simultaneously inquiring into how I enacted knowledge in my research practices. Inquiry into beliefs about knowledge – what knowledge means, where knowledge comes from, who knows (and who doesn’t) – was undertaken to gain insight into how knowledge is known and the effects of conceptions of knowledge on daily living. Beginning with the assumption that beliefs about abstract concepts, such as knowledge, tend to be held implicitly and therefore elude critique and rev

Résumé :
Criminal behavior results in negative, costly consequences for both individuals and society at large. Therefore, researchers have worked to identify variables that predict recidivism, or recurrence of crime. The variables with the strongest predictive power include criminal thinking, personality traits, antisocial peers, and family difficulties, among others. In addition, policy makers and stakeholders are creating interventions which target criminal thinking, to reduce criminal thinking and hopefully reduce future crime. However, little is known about measuring criminal thinking in community

In this case study I document a group of youth, ages thirteen to fifteen, as they investigate and explore social justice issues and personal beliefs in order to create a community service learning project. Ideas are presented through the introduction of activist art and also by the viewing of recordings of a variety of perspectives on social justice issues and community involvement from a diverse population. The vehicle of inquiry in the study is the production of a visual journal in which thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and ideas will be examined and considered through art making. A review

Youth will be dealing with the global sustainability challenge that our world is currently facing. They are considered to play a crucial role as future leaders in the transition towards a more sustainable society. These leaders need an inherent understanding of the sustainability challenge that they are confronted with. It begins by developing a theoretical grounding for Islamic conceptualisations of personal autonomy and dialogic pedagogy. In doing so, it aims to generate dialogue between Islamic and ‘western’ educational traditions, and to clarify the theoretical foundation of halaqah, a traditional Islamic oral pedagogy, that has been adapted to meet the educational needs of Muslim children in contemporary Britain. Self-handicapping refers to the process whereby people proactively plan excuses for future mistakes. The interpersonal motivation to self-handicap lies in clouding any evaluation of ability, whilst the intrapersonal motivation is the protection of self-esteem.
